THE DEVIL AND THE ANGEL 24-th of January 1792

When I'm told I'm not good enough,

I remember that I'm a child of God and that settles my heart. When I hear that I am stupid, I remember that someone must not know me well, and they will have their own judgement over me, but I don't have to believe it. I have aboard A DEVIL AND AN ANGEL. And sometimes I feel like losing my mind. It was nice when the devil approached me in my last day in Marseilles, asking for quick passage, as her life was in danger. And we know exactly – everyone knows – which is that danger affecting not only noble necks. The good money pouches she had paid me for passage for her and for the little angel in her service were enough to make me say yes and give them my cabin. But her permanent complaints exasperate me. She would have wished the wind and the waves to listen to her orders, instead of God's! This ship had never been cleaner and it is still not enough for her. Actually, she isn't throwing only complaints. She had insulted me and my beautiful, safe ship in ways I couldn't even write here. My beautiful Colomba surely isn't a "mediocre bath tub" and I am not the stupid drunkard she thinks. Damn, I haven't got drunk for several months and I don't intend to start doing it! Even if this devil's moods severely tempt me to… The little angel has a beautiful smile and she is never complaining, despite the hard life she must have with such a mistress. I am curious which of my crewmates have a crush on her, because she is surrounded by all the delicate attentions possible. Which makes me proud of my crew, and at the same time makes me wonder if it is merely their knowledge that no matter whom of them would be bolder (or preferred), the conditions on a cramped little gabarre surely don’t offer the smallest privacy. I have the impression, though, that after Fernand spending most of his free time at the "Drunken Duck" when in Venice, now Rino, the only one who doesn't speak French, got a sudden incentive to learn it… Would this have been an angel kiss?
