4. Do you regret getting involved in any fandoms?

Boy, that is somewhat of a loaded question.  The simple answer is no - I don’t regret any fandom I have, or am, been a part of.  However that is merely the simple answer.  The reality is a much more complex beast.

I’ve enjoyed a lot of shows and movies thru the years but have only truly participated in a very small fraction of fandoms.  At the moment I only have a few recent fandoms where I’ve had active involvement: Psych (my longest running fandom to date - started in 2007), Sherlock, and the MCU.

The people I choose to engage with regularly from all of these fandoms are amazing, brilliant, creative, wonderful people.  They are people whom I regularly enjoy in my life whatever our differences or even disagreements.  This is also what makes the fandom space livable for me and truly wholesome and encouraging.  I feel it is really important to be tremendously picky about whom to allow close to you in any venue - and especially fandom (whatever the reason there can be some truly toxic beasts in fandoms - don’t let the false idea of the “happy nerd” fool you).  

Now, with all those disclaimers out of the way I can get into the more complex answer.

I love to pieces all three fandoms listed above.  But all three have various levels of toxicity that can bleed into even the best of spaces.

Where I feel regret...?  Damn but that’s actually hard to parse.  Regret implies wishing you’d never become a part of something and that just isn’t the case.  Even after fucking endgame - the shitstorm of all raging dumpster fires - I don’t regret being a part of the MCU fandom.  But that isn’t to say I don’t, at times, find the culture of that fandom completely vexing.  I think I need to change “regret” to “frustration” in order to really answer this thing.  My frustration, with the MCU fandom in particular (and, too, there’s FAR too much of this bullshit in the Sherlock fandom as well) is the little cults that form that demand conformity of all other fans.  Like, first of all, who the FUCK do you think you are?? Fandom, by its nature, is SUPPOSED to be a place of free expression and personal enjoyment of a brand of media.  Yet there are these miserable balls of festering armadillo shit that feel entitled to dictate the “right” way or the “obviously canon” way or “the writers clearly meant THIS” way of consuming a product.  Lemme tell ya straight up - you don’t know fucking shit.  NOBODY does.  Fucking read the minced bullshit spewed by the Russos, M&M, and Feige - not even the WRITERS know what the fuck they mean half the time.  We see what we fucking choose to see - end of.  Problem is - these poisonous insects that crowd fandom spaces end up being the loudest fuckwits among everyone.  They yowl like cats in fucking heat about their little “canon” and cram it down everyone else’s throat like it was written by God himself on carved stone.  So even if I had the desire to enjoy some of their personal take on fandom there would be no way I could do so, now.  I’m a spiteful bitch and would rather cut off my fingers than stand alongside someone so vile.

Well that was fun and sweary...

And yeah, I’ve been carrying that quite a while - it seeps out now and then...

But just to reiterate - I do NOT regret any fandom I’m a part of.  There will always be more good than bad and I’m delighted to be able to find other like-minds and build on the canon that exists in my own head.
