Down is up and up is down. Or is it the other way around? Earth and a fortiori the whole solar system, even our home galaxy- endlessly float into space as the universe expands. As the Earth rotates around the Sun and on itself, it gives the impression that the sky is actually moving for an observer on its surface. That’s probably why it took so long for humanity to accept that the Sun was at the center of the solar system and not the Earth!

All the modern films taken at night usually capture this celestial course from a fixed point of the Earth. Thus you will most likely watch the moon or the milky way make their way across the firmament. In the Northern Hemisphere, it seems to move from left to right, and the opposite in the Southern Hemisphere. Nonetheless have you ever seen a film where the night sky is fixed and the Earth moves instead? Well, now you have!That was the whole point of this short time-lapse film that I dubbed ‘Orbem Terræ’, or orbiting Earth in latin. The goal is to bring a whole new perspective on how we actually move against the background sky! In this manner, some of the clips give a very cool effect where you almost feel like you’re on the International Space Station lokking down at the Earth. This ‘floating’ effect is admittedly unsettling though, as if we will fall into the abyss of the universe. However only now can you appreciate the true movement of rotation of our planet in the solar system. Some of the clips are also tilted, reversed and rotated on purpose to accentuate the effect, so much that sometimes, you have no clue what is up and what is down! It’s especially true for the scenes featuring water reflection!

To achieve this particular effect, it actually not rocket science. There exist simple devices that, if set in the right way, can follow and track a particular point of the sky by compensation for the rotation of the Earth. By mountain your camera on top of those ‘tracker’, you can now have a fixed sky, a rotating Earth effect, and some advantages as the cherry on top: more details in the night sky objects!

This short film is actually a compilation of all the best tracked shots I have acquired during the past 4 years. After all my different movies, I’ve been asked a number of times to put together this compilation, so here you go! They were taken all over the globe from Europe to South America, Africa to North America. Những kinh nghiệm giúp bạn chụp Bokeh đẹp lung linh

Chụp Bokeh là một kỹ thuật không quá phức tạp trong nhiếp ảnh nhưng mang đến những bức hình huyền ảo với sắc màu lung linh thu hút người xem. Bài viết này xin gửi đến bạn đọc, nhất là những ai mới bắt đầu những kinh nghiệm, kiến thức cơ bản về chụp Bokeh

Khi nhiếp ảnh gia sử dụng độ sâu trường ảnh (DoF) nông, mục đích thường là làm cho đối tượng của bức ảnh được nổi bật so với nền. Tuy nhiên, điều này thường khiến họ “quên mất” nét đẹp của khu vực không được lấy nét mà chỉ chú ý duy nhất vào chủ thể chính, có thể nói đây là một sai lầm lớn.

Bokeh là gì? Khái niệm Bokeh có nguồn gốc từ tiếng Nhật (boke ぼけ, danh từ của “bokeru” ぼける, nghĩa là “nhòe”), đây là một từ để mô tả hiện tượng hay một cảm giác về vùng bị nhòe mờ (out nét). Bokeh không có nghĩa nói đến khoảng cách xa hay gần của đối tượng bị out nét mà nên được hiểu là chất lượng và hình thù của phần nằm ngoài vùng focus. Cụ thể hơn,  Bokeh là cảm giác về những vệt mờ ở hậu cảnh/tiền cảnh với những điểm phản chiếu của ánh sáng.

Hiệu ứng Bokeh được tạo ra bằng cách chụp những ánh đèn có cường độ thấp và nhẹ cộng với việc tăng giảm độ mở ống kính và khoảng cách tới chủ thể để tạo ra những hình dạng phản chiếu khác nhau của ánh đèn, hình thành những hiệu ứng đốm sáng lung linh hấp dẫn ánh mắt người xem.

Bokeh xấu hay đẹp phụ thuộc vào chất lượng ống kính, do thiết kế quang học khác nhau mà các loại ống kính khác nhau sẽ tạo ra Bokeh khác nhau. Các ống kính chụp chân dung và ống tele với khẩu độ tối đa lớn tạo ra Bokeh dễ chịu hơn so với loại ống zoom thông thường. Ví dụ: cùng một dải tiêu cự và khẩu độ nhưng do thiết kế quang học khác nhau mà Lens Nikon 85mm f/1.4D cho Bokeh đặc biệt tốt, trong khi Nikon 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6G DX lại cho Bokeh xấu hơn.

Cách chụp Bokeh 1. Chọn chế độ chụp Manual (M) hoặc Aperture trên camera (Av) để chọn chế độ ưu tiên khẩu độ.

2. Thiết lập khẩu độ rộng (f – số thấp) tối thiểu là F2.0, lý tưởng là từ F1,2 đến F1.8.

3. Chỉnh Manual Focus

4. Tắt đèn xung quanh đi và tăng ISO lên cao, đồng thời giảm tốc độ chụp. Tốc độ chụp nên là 1/40 hoặc thậm chí thấp hơn.

5. Tìm vị trí tốt để chụp chủ thể trong khoảng cách từ 1-2m trở lên từ camera.

6. Bắt đầu chụp. Bốn kỹ thuật cải thiện Bokeh Nhiều nhiếp ảnh gia không nhận ra rằng họ có thể kiểm soát chất lượng thẩm mỹ của bokeh. Có bốn kỹ thuật cơ bản để cải thiện bokeh của bạn: điều chỉnh độ sâu trường ảnh, chọn ống kính thích hợp, tạo ra tùy chỉnh bokeh, và sử dụng bokeh có sự liên quan với các tiền cảnh.

1. Điều chỉnh độ sâu trường ảnh (DoF) Bởi vì bokeh là phần mờ của hình ảnh, nó có liên quan trực tiếp đến độ sâu trường ảnh – kiểm soát có bao nhiêu hình ảnh không được lấy nét. Đặt khẩu độ rộng (f-số nhỏ) tạo ra DoF nông, khi đó hình ảnh sẽ có phần hậu cảnh bị mờ đi. Ngoài ra, độ dài tiêu cự ngắn hơn sẽ cho DoF sâu hơn và ngược lại

Một yếu tố nữa cần xét đến trong việc kiểm soát độ sâu trường ảnh là khoảng cách từ ống kính đến đối tượng chụp.

Khoảng cách giữa thấu kính và chủ thể lớn hơn tạo độ sâu trường ảnh lớn hơn. Hay nói cách khác, khi đối tượng chụp càng gần với máy ảnh thì DoF càng nông, do đó, di chuyển cách xa đối tượng của bạn sẽ giúp tăng độ sâu trường ảnh.

Nhiều nhiếp ảnh gia mới bắt đầu luôn luôn đẩy cho khẩu độ thấp nhất có thể. Đây là điều không nên làm. Thông thường, các phần mờ của hình ảnh sẽ đẹp hơn nếu còn đủ chi tiết ở phía sau để tạo ra một số hình dạng hoặc các đối tượng ẩn ở background. Nguyên tắc đầu tiên để tạo được bokeh tốt hơn là để xác định đúng độ sâu trường ảnh chứ không phải là luôn luôn lựa chọn tạo ra phần nền mờ nhất.

2. Lựa chọn Lens phù hợp Khẩu độ là một nhóm các lá nhỏ tạo thành một vòng tròn hoặc hình bát giác được tích hợp vào ống kính mà qua đó ánh sáng đi vào cảm biến. Khẩu độ mà sử dụng nhiều lá nhỏ xếp lại hoặc có các lá cong sẽ tạo ra nhiều đốm sáng tròn trong bokeh, trong khi khẩu độ với hình bát giác tạo ra một những đốm sáng có hình thù tương tự như vậy. Nhiều nhiếp ảnh gia thích chụp bokeh tròn hơn là bokeh hình bát giác.

Nhìn chung, những loại ống kính đắt tiền hơn sẽ sử dụng nhiều lá khẩu độ và/hoặc các lá khẩu độ cong giúp tạo ra những hiệu ứng Bokeh tròn.

3. Tự tạo Bokeh Tự tạo ra những hình Bokeh độc đáo với những hình dạng khác nhau trên ống kính đã trở thành “trào lưu” từ một vài năm trước đây. Bằng cách cắt những hình theo ý thích, người chụp có thể kiểm soát được hình dạng của các đốm sáng trong Bokeh.

Đây là một hiệu ứng rất sáng tạo và bắt mắt miễn là bạn không quá lạm dụng. Để tự  tạo Bokeh độc lạ, chỉ cần cắt một hình nhỏ (có thể là hình ngôi sao, bông tuyết, trái tim tùy thích) kích thước khoảng một đồng xu trong một mảnh giấy màu đen.

Sau đó, dán băng giấy này trên mặt trước của ống kính giống như là nắp của ống kính sao cho hình đã cắt nằm chính giữa của ống kính. Khi bạn chụp một bức ảnh, những bokeh sẽ phản ánh hình dạng của hình đã cắt.

4. Kết hợp giữa tiền cảnh và hậu cảnh Thông thường, những hình ảnh tạo được sự cuốn hút là khi có điều gì đó khiến người xem không đoán định được trước. Sự kết nối giữa đối tượng sắc nét ở tiền cảnh với phần hình ảnh nền mờ có thể tạo ra một hình ảnh thực sự sáng tạo.

Ever since I started astrophotography I’ve waited to visit the dark skies of Chile. I took advantage of the total solar eclipse of July 2nd to give me a ‘good excuse’ to go there and shoot astrolapses as well. For a bit more than two weeks, Alyn Wallace and I roamed about some of the driest areas and darkest skies on the planet. This short films tells the tale of an otherworldly experience filled with many challenges and stunning scenery throughout the deserts of the South-American country.

Chile is unlike any other places on our beautiful planet. The climate there is very strange, especially coming from northern Europe. While the southern part of the country is colder and more humid, the northern part offers some of the sunniest and driest places thanks to the Andes blocking most of the clouds. The high plateaus (Altiplano) actually extends for miles from South to North and even in the winter time, the astrophotography possibilities are almost endless and seemingly easy to come by. During our two weeks around La Serena and Atacama, Alyn and I have almost not seen a single cloud or a major gust of wind. Moreover, despite the growing light pollution around the arid plains, the night remains one of the best on Earth. There, the nigh it is quite long (from 6:30PM till 6AM), and the air is thin and pure to allow less scattering and a clearer view on the stars. So theoretically it was possible to shoot every night.

But that’s in theory. In practice, Chile ended up being the most challenging environment to shoot in so far. It’s even more extreme than shooting the northern light by -35 degrees Celsius in Sweden! Even with a good acclimatization at 2500m, the altitude (~4300m sometimes), fatigue, cold (-11 C sometimes), the constant dust lifting off the ground took a serious toll on our health. In turn that prevented us from shooting every night for two weeks. After both falling sick several times, we simply had to give up even though we’re usually quite resistant and resilient. The desert is a serious hostile environment and unfortunately the movie does not show it. That’s without mentioning some of the other challenges we had, like puncturing a tire in the middle of nowhere, breaking my 70-300mm Tamron lens an hour before the eclipse, or almost having a fit at 4800m of altitude.

Fortunately though, the experience of being under such beauty and shooting it was well worth the trip. The film only features 2 sequences of the total solar eclipse, but the photos cannot do the real thing justice, even in an environment that looks like Mars. I tried my best to diversify the shots and compile them into this short to showcase how jaw-dropping the Chilean desert are at night. At the start of the movie, I featured my first ever night hyperlapse, which is quite hard to achieve, even under a full moon (uneven terrain, anchor points hard to find…). From the flowering cacti in front of the milky way galaxy to the turquoise slaty lagoons reflecting the stars, but also the arid but singular salt flats, the deserts of Chile truly are a unique place for nightscapes. I had two main shooting challenges this time though. Firstly the car lights (many tourists coming around the eclipse) which lit up some sequences (I had to remove some frames and some of the sequences got a bit laggy). The second problem was the difference of light between the sky and foreground. Indeed the sky was very bright and the ground very dark in comparison, so I often had to push the ISO to 10K and 12K, or bump up the exposure time, which in turn resulted in less clean sequences.
