Costume Meta 6x01
It feels so good to be back 🎉 and Now I have a 30 picture limit I’m gonna have so much fun!!!
We’re starting with a bit of colour theory because this episode went hard with the Yellow and blue colour theory from the opening scene! I mean we should have realised the show was gonna go hard with this episode - a giant blimp (actually a zeppelin but semantics!!) kitted out in yellow and blue crash landing - subtly is not known here! you can read my yellow blue colour theory here, but in summary - there has been a bit of a trend in the last few years in television to use yellow and blue in relation to queer relationships - the colour theory was used in Heartbreaker, Our flag means death, and Stranger things - to name a few! The long and short of it is that Yellow - the colour of communication pairs up with blue - the colour of trust and loyalty…
So we started with a giant yellow and blue blimp and from there the yellow and blue was all over the place - the buddie kitchen scene, the dad in the golf course emergency, the win a car emergency (blue car and guy in yellow) etc.
Ok now I’ve got that out of the way - I’m going to stick with going through Character by Character as it makes my life bit easier - putting the rest under the cut as this got insanely long!!
Lucy Wearing a light grey marl cap sleeve tee - light grey is a neutral colour - but it also symbolises control (a reference to the fact she was going to be interim captain) and practicality - ironically its also a reliable colour! there really isn’t a lot to say about her costume, other than that it continues on the grey theme for her from season 5 (her lunch with Jonah)
Tumblr media
May
Rainbow puff sleeved cardigan Pretty amused to see May in a rainbow cardigan when she is clearly not being all sunshine and rainbows about her upcoming college experience! the use of horizontal stripes again fits in to my stripe theory and hints at Mays impending change of direction.
Tumblr media
Athena
Athena sticking with what she knows works for her - black and olive khaki green! In many ways this colour combination is Athena’s out of work uniform, we see her in this combination or with some white/cream or in just black so often and it makes the scenes where she’s wearing colour much more impactful - It makes us take notice of what we see going on in those scenes for her. Here we have an asymmetric black jumper, olive khaki trousers and her gorgons head necklace (the symbol of the Goddess Athena).
Tumblr media
Then when she goes over to Hen’s we have her still in the olive khaki trousers but this time paired with a white ribbed tee and a low v neck grey cardigan with a reverse waffle knit texture. this is one of Athenas more fluffy costumes - its showing her softer side - especially when she talks about giving Bobby the freedom to be carried away with his cruise planning to help him navigate the temptation being on a cruise ship will bring. The grey is again a symbol of stability and authority as well as wisdom and maturity - something reflected in her words - her recognition and understanding of Bobbys internal struggles, but also the fact that she came to Hens house to accomodate Hens crazy schedule - and still get to spend some time with her friend - its an opportunity for Hen to offload on a few things, rather than just getting increasingly burried under her work load.
Tumblr media
The magenta top she’s wearing as they get ready to head off on their cruise is a wonderful choice. Magenta is a colour of kindness - it uplifts and supports others - again an indication of what Athena is doing in regards to supporting Bobby and foreshadowing the fact that she’s goingto be heading to Florida to support her parents.
Tumblr media
Bobby
Tumblr media
Bobby - Bobby in an army green/grey tee - very similar in shade to ones we’ve seen Eddie wear (especially Eddies breakdown) is an interesting choice - especially with all the conversations about bobby being in the program and the bars on the cruise ship etc and obviously there is the scene in 5x18 of Bobby and Eddie having a conversation and then Bobby pouring a bottle of whiskey down the sink. there is very much feeling of Bobby being finely balanced at the moment - teetering on the edge of things spiralling and that it won’t take much to tip hip over that edge. the blue and coral hawaiian shirt screams very much of someone trying too hard - especially combined with his spreadsheet cruise planning.
Hen
Hen is in a hoodie with neon orange graffiti spray paint swirls on - such an interesting choice - orange is a colour of energy and mental stimulation. its also a risk taking colour. the use of graffiti, for me at least, is an interesting one - it has an air of ‘the writing on the wall’ about it - its saying to me that the medical career path isn’t going to be something Hen continues pursuing - that her heart isn’t completely in it (the heart medical book on the desk being the one furthest away from her also plays into this idea).
Chimney
I’m going to talk about Chimneys costume as a whole because if you look anthem all together you can see the gradual change - the way they become increasingly dark. we go from the blue of the first jumper through to the darkest navy button up shirt with white check at the end. so We go from a fairly bright shade of blue - the symbol of trust and loyalty and security.
Tumblr media
then there is  the teal/green when Madney are on the sofa. its a mixture of the blue meanings, but also green meanings of harmony, hope and balance and renewal. a perfect colour for this moment, but the darkness of its tone hints at the fact not everything is going be smooth sailing from here on in.
Tumblr media
then When Chimney comes home, he’s in a navy blue jumper and tee. this is a lighter shade of navy and is pretty similar to the blue of Chimneys uniform - a connection to the conversation he had with Bobby and Eddie earlier on. Navy is a colour associated with authority and responsibility (hence its use in uniforms) but the thing with navy is that it also has connections with depression and mental health struggles and the fact that we then have Chim in an even darker navy with a white check pattern the next time we see him is indicative of not everything being as happy as it appears on the surface. We all know Madney are going to be going to couples therapy this season and this shirt is an indicator of this. (It doesn’t hurt that it also supports my check patttern theory either)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Maddie
Maddie drops of Jee with Chimney - black blazer grey zip front hoodie and tee with stars on , heart necklace - Maddie being back in blazers is a great sign from a costuming perspective - we have only seen her wearing blazers when she’s in a good place mentally - just before Doug kidnaps her and then again when Madney are in a good place. this black blazer is connecting to the times Maddie and Chim have made starts in there relationship - she was wearing a black blazer when she was getting ready for her date with chim, and then again when they went on their first proper date. So that blazers an indicator that Maddie is in a good place and ready to embrace happiness with Chim once again.
The grey hoodie is an interesting choice because we don’t see Maddie in grey very often at all (I actually can’t think of any incidents of her wearing grey - I haven’t finished my full costume plot yet so I can’t be 100% but I can’t remember any) it shows her practicality and stability, her having gained wisdom, insight and maturity - like the black blazer its a key indicator of where she’s at mentally and the combination of the two is indicative that this time she’s in the right place of it to last
Tumblr media
Maddie in bed in a tie dye tee and we can see the pink hoodie on the chair in the corner. Im not sure if its going to turn out to be a cut scene and we only know about it because of the trailer or if it will be a scene to accompany chimney being in the car that’s going to (almost) hit Buck but the outfit is the same as the trailer scene of Maddie and Jee-Yun looking for Chimney in the living room. Im inclined to think its a separate scene and the repeat outfit is deliberate - to highlight what seems to be a developing theme of history repeating itself. The upcoming car accident has so many potential call backs for so many characters (Chim being in car (potential rebar call back) as well as being kidnapped again (which will also impact on Hen and Bobby) Buck and the ladder truck, the Shannon callback for Eddie, Hen and Evelyn, Buck and bike accidents)
Tumblr media
The coral blazer is a really great colour on Jen, but its also a great choice from a colour theory perspective. We have Maddie in a white tee with a 60’s style bubble writing logo which says (I think) all good and a coral coloured blazer. I’ve already said blazers are good for Maddie and this one is no exception. Coral is a colour of warmth and acceptance, it has good intentions and is optimistic - it is a colour about a bigger picture rather than small details. this is important because this conversation that Madney have is about the bigger picture of their relationship - the conversation reads like Maddie making vows to Chim (foreshadowing of a wedding anyone??) but it is at its heart one that recognises they will need to continue to put in work to sort out the small stuff - its just that in that moment - the bigger picture and acknowledging that it is the thing they lost sight of while and need to not let that happen again.
Tumblr media
I’m a little obsessed with the green jacket we see Maddie in in the last scene and I’m sad we don’t get a better look at it to be honest - because there is so much going on. Firstly the yellow tee underneath is indicative of both happiness and the fact that Maddie communicates that she’s staying to Jee. Its a significant moment for both Madney and Jee-Yun so the use of yellow was important for this scene. As for the Jacket though. We have a floral embroidered decoration on the back - a possible throwback to Madneys first meeting when Maddie is wearing a denim shirt with floral embroidery on the yoke. But the really interesting thing is the two cranes on the right shoulder. You may recall I made this post  about Hen’s crane shirt in season 5. well here we have more cranes being used in connection with Chim. Cranes mate for life and are a symbol of fidelity so here we have a visual symbol to show us that Madney are in the right place now. the other thing about cranes is that they migrate over long distances - Madney have travelled both metaphorical and physical distances to get to where they are now and those cranes are a symbol of that.
Tumblr media
Christopher Let’s start with Chris as he’s the easiest! here we see him in a raglan sleeve tee - lightish blue sleeves and a grey body with white horizontal stripes. the stripes play into my stripe theory - change is on its way for Christopher - this most likely relates to his impeding push for some freedoms from his father - wanting to become his own person etc, but its incredibly hard to look past the stripes being connected to everything that went on in that scene - suggesting that the change that is coming is more related to the changing dynamic of the Buckley-Diaz family! the grey is a marl and it references to the same things as the Lucy tee from earlier - practicality, reliability (we can all rely on Chris to have a sassy dig at either Eddie or Buck!) while the blue arms are about trust, security and loyalty. the implications being that Chris is in safe, trusting environment and the bonds between the three of them are strong.
Chris is wearing a blue t-shirt with a pair of skateboards on in parallel with each other- one red and one blue is such an interesting choice! to choose to call back to the skateboard incident from Fools (3x12) is very loud. it not only draws a contrast between Buck ad Ana, it also serves as a subtle reminder of the first time we see a Buckley-Diaz family scene after the previous kitchen scene - the first time we get to see Buck stepping into a coparent role with Eddie.
Tumblr media
Eddie
Eddie, Eddie, Eddie. I said a while back that if we ever saw Eddie wearing yellow the Buddie would go canon. And here we have Eddie in a buttery yellow button shirt. There is so much to say about this outfit. Yellow is the colour of communication, but it is also the colour of optimism and happiness and of intellect. Eddie wearing yellow for the first time in the first non his first non uniform scene in season 6 speaks volumes about where Eddie is at mentally and personally. This is especially loud after the darker tones we saw him in in season 5 and the choice of having him in two different patterns at the vow renewal really highlights how far he has come. It’s a deliberate choice to show us where Eddie is - combine that with the giant heart eyes he’s sporting whenever he looks at Buck and its clear that the last 4 months have further transformed him from where he was at at the end of season 5. The shirt is also better fitting than mot of his outfit from season 5, where we saw him in oversized and stretched out clothing - adding a physical dimension to his mental struggles.
Tumblr media
I’ve seen a few people comparing this shirt with the one he wore for his math date with Ana, and calling it his date shirt but I don’t think its right to put those two shirt into the same category. Especially as the shirt above actually matches up with another Eddie shirt - in fact  I think it is the same shirt thats just been over dyed a buttery yellow (reason I think this is that the buttons are the same colour on both shirts!) and tailored to fit Ryan better.  2x17 - In Bobbys apartment having a conversation about if Eddie is ready to be a good husband
“we already know you’re a great dad’ “I guess the question is, can I be a good husband”
Tumblr media
All this just before Shannon asks for a divorce and then gets killed in  a car accident!
To have essentially the same shirt - just in a more cheerful colour - in such a domestic scene where they’re acting like husbands suggests that Eddie wasn’t ready back in 2x17 (because it was t he wrong person) but now - he’s in a better place (hence the brighter colour) and is ready to be a good husband! All this combining with Buck in his paralleling denim shirt showing his growth and when we know Buck is about to (almost) get hit by a car! 🤯🤯🤯 Honestly - wardrobe team I bow down to you - you’ve really hit it out of the park this time!
I just wan to show you the math date shirt from 4x08 - as you can see - not the same shirt - this one is a western style shirt - pointed yoke, pointed pockets and metal buttons/ poppers!
Tumblr media
I actually like that the math date shirt is a western style shirt - it fits in nicely with the other times we’ve seen Eddie in western style shirts - around Shannon and his family - the concept of traditional values etc in shirt form!
Eddies grey shirt at the end of the episode is very much intended to sit in parallel to the shooting and especially the will scene.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Its a darker grey marl, so not the same as a navy blue, but the neckline has a very similar cut to it and grey as a colour can mean insight, maturity and wisdom - it is also a stable colour so its a great colour to have Eddie in in this scene - especially with them connecting Buck to the diaz boys through the editing. We are seeing an Eddie who is stable and comfortable in who he is - who has spent the episode being insightful and wise - talking Buck off the ledge during his ‘tantrum’ and being the living embodiment of what therapy can do for a person! The other thing to note about that t-shirt is the connection with that space and season 5 - one of the last times we saw Eddie in the dining room - Buck was there and wearing a similar shade of grey and Eddie sat in that same chair after therapy and picked up Bucks heart!!!! The implication of this parallel is the Eddie will be there for Buck in the same way we saw Buck being there for him!
Buck I went into it in more detail in this post, so I’ll keep it brief here. Buck is wearing a white tee - and we’ve long established that Buck and white tops means trouble! in this instance the trouble is his tantrum over being passed up for interim captain and actually reflects nicely on to the turmoil his mind is currently in in relation to his personal life with all the loaded sentences about couches and and relationships. Then there is the the mid to light blue zip front denim shirt with vertical stripes - we haven’t actually seen him in a denim shirt of any description since the western style one we saw him wear for his coffee shop date with Abby at the end of 1x09. This parallel hits on a few different levels. Firstly 1x09 is the only other time that blimps are mentioned in 911!! yes indeed that coffee shop date comes after that locker room talk with bobby about blimps and stepping in. That coffee shop date is when we see Buck choosing to go all in, in his first serious relationship - seeing all the things that come with dating Abby - and choosing to embrace them (dare I say that this is the Buck 1.5 KR was speaking about in her interview which adds an additional dimension to the kitchen scene!) and stepping in - something we’ve seen him do with Eddie time and again. That date was the foundation stone for what Buck has been building with Eddie - it was a moment of growth for him and a lesson he took to heart and continues to live by to this day. That we see this in a scene so laden with metaphors in an episode with another blimp - this time an actual one rather than a mentioned one - this speaks volumes about the intent of the writers and the direction the show is going in.
Tumblr media
Buck is also wearing a watch in this scene - something he doesn’t do outside of work that often and especially when he is around Eddie (I haven’t finished writing my full costume plot yet, but the only time he wears one around Eddie in seasons 2-3 is when he takes Eddie to collect Chris after the earthquake).
Then we have Buck alone in his loft. there are several things to walkabout in this scene and first up we have white trainer theory - one again coming in for the win. those white trainers are a representation of Bucks journey and search for love (both romantic and familial) so to see them at this moment is highlighting that Buck has made more progress on his journey.
Tumblr media
The white shirt with stripes call back is so very loud. This shirt however has a few differences. the stripes are a combination of Bucks two previous white shirts with a twist. There is the white pinstripe shirt from the shooting - with its narrow light grey pinstripes;
Tumblr media
And then the shirt from the Taylor moving in to the loft scene (which of course features the couch!) which is a short sleeve shirt with wider and darker grey pinstripes;
Tumblr media
This shirt is also worn in the conversation with Maddie (where buck confesses to Maddie he kissed Lucy).
The shirt for this scene in 6x01 is a combination of the two shirts - there is both narrow and wide pinstripes and it is of a similar cut to the other loft scene, only its not a button down shirt, its a button up shirt, its also cream and the stripes are blue and they have a tiny yellow stripe next to them! Yes blue and yellow theory in action on Bucks shirt!
Tumblr media
I have a semi developed theory about Bucks vertically striped shirts - because Buck seems to wear them at moments when he is almost ‘imprisoned’ by something mentally. The trauma Buck experiences in the shooting is its an obvious prison - especially as they haven’t yet talked about the shooting - Taylor moving in was again a prison of his own making and only helped prolong the torture of an unhappy relationship. There is also the black with white pinstripe shirts we see a couple of times - all connected to Taylor and her mental manipulations of Buck (I think i’m going to have to put together a full post on these shirts because there is too much to go into here) and this most recent pair of shirts - the blue one from earlier - where we have a Buck doing some mental self torture trying to work out why he’s been passed over for the interim Captain job and finally this new white one - Where Buck is currently in a mental prison of sorts around what he does actually want in life - this self imposed prison is such a complex one - its of course in part tied to his job and future aspirations on that front, but more importantly all of the context and subtext we got in this episode is heavily implying that we have returned to a Buck who is on some level now conscious of his feelings for Eddie. there is so much complexity here for Buck to wade through - Evan ‘the clinger’ Buckley is clearly wrestling with the idea of what if it goes wrong - what if he’s reading too much into things - he’s not yet in a place where he is prepared to risk both his friendship with Eddie, but almost more importantly his relationship with Chris - the kid he promised he’d always be around for. Buck is not yet willing or able to accept that the risk is worth the reward - that this is the forever love he’s been searching for. There is also the job to add into the equation - would they be split up at work if they begin a romantic relationship, how would it affect the dynamics- of the team, and would it have an impact on Bucks newly awakened desire to progress his career. I also thin there is something in it about accepting his queerness - not in a grappling with it kind of way - more in a deeper level understanding this aspect of himself and recognising its impact on his life. The best way I can think to try and explain what I mean is to use my own experience with gaining my ASD and ADHD diagnosis as an adult. When I got my diagnosis - suddenly all these little things that I had experienced throughout my life up to that point suddenly started to make sense - the dots began to connect and I could better understand who I was as a person (and how tings might’ve been different if I’d known earlier). its not that it changed me as a person, more that I was able to make some break throughs mentally. it feels to me at least that that is what we’re seeing Buck going through - he’s now beginning to understand himself better and its this love for Eddie that is allowing it to happen. And Buck does need to connect to parts of his younger self in order to move forward - and that includes recognising past relationship behaviours as well as other traumas (the shooting) need to be understood.
Wow I got a bit off topic there!!! all this to say that that white shirt has so so much to say about where Buck is at as a larger theme. I’m wrapping it up here - if you made it to the end I am here handing you cookies in thanks! 🍪🍪🍪

So, I have this question and I thought I'd send it here :) What are your thoughts on Sam x fashion aside from the crack? Do you have early Sam x fashion meta? I'm feeling it's reflective of his making his own choices as he had wacky weird fashion sense in earlier seasons then during the time he follows Dean cos guilt copies Dean's lumberjack style until season 12 when he gets some weird clothes again (orange jacket cough). I kinda hope we see him in wacky fashion now he's more independent again?
hahahaha
I feel kind of like the asshole cat who’s always knocking things over until someone comes to give me attention
But no, yeah. Sam’s clothes are weird, man. Weird. *shuffles the purple dog shirt to the bottom of my drawer of t-shirts*
In season 1 his quintessential look to me is the brown hoodie and backpack, and sometimes the leather laptop satchel he has. He could be wandering on a college campus, and that’s intentional, because, well, that was what he had been doing. He has t-shirts with things on them, favouring purple and dark red for symbolic reasons but he does have a couple of different designs of each if you squint.
I always like the immediately established pattern that Sam and Dean essentially wear the same clothes with minor differences, but that Sam ALWAYS buttons up his shirt, and Dean ALWAYS leaves his loose. It’s the no. 1 thing that bugs me about fan art of the two of them, that I can tell casual “Lol just dipping into this fandom” art immediately because they’ll depict Dean with a buttoned up shirt or Sam with his open and loose. Sam wears his open in like… 4x07 when he was half-undressed, and Dean wears a button up shirt in 6x01 and 9x13 in a job interview. I may be missing some others but that’s like… in all my years of caring about this and rewatching the show with a meta mind, and keeping half an eye on their clothes in case of Symbolism, I don’t see much variation. (Also: Sam always wears v-necks once the patterns get entrenched, and Dean always wears round necks.)
Of course, the easiest explanation is Sam keeps his shirt buttoned because Secrets and Deep Hidden Layers, while Dean wears his heart on his sleeve slightly more literally, in that his shirt is flapping open exposing the t-shirt beneath, and of course he has the amulet to accent that look for the first 3rd of the show, hanging over his heart. (Dean also is the only one of them who wears henleys, ever. Sam just wears a t-shirt exposed when he’s being vulnerable, while Dean has a little more variation.)
Anyways. Sam’s look is less practical than Dean’s - more white shirts, more dressy shirts to start with. The godawful white one with the red patterning underneath. Pin-stripes. He has patterns and Dean has block colours. Even as the show goes on, Sam collects shirts with stripes and mixes them in with wearing plaid, all in the same manner. I think that is basically again a little link back to the early costuming.
One of the funniest moments of the show to me at the time when it was about all the canon we had, was in 6x18 when Sam’s only concession to time travelling is to change his shirt, and he pulls it off in comparison to Dean’s wildly over-enthusiastic time travelling, and issues with it and eventual re-costuming, again into a whole ensemble. I think that particularly tells us about Sam that he doesn’t really sweat the details like Dean does because his surface layer is such a strong, placid force that people don’t question it. In 8x11 Dean dresses up and Sam stays in his fed suit for most of the episode, and it doesn’t cause him problems in anywhere near the same way. In both episodes there’s a lot more to say about Dean and his need to fit in/exuberance to dress up and be someone else, but I do love the light it shines on contrast to Sam, that somehow his lack of caring about his clothes just beams out and makes everyone else not really care that much either.
But yeah, Sam’s shirts get more interchangeable with Dean as time goes on - he starts wearing some of the same colours, and they have shirts I am sure that in a non-TV world where the costume department takes care of this for them they’d always be mixing them up and accidentally wearing each other’s clothes. Or at least putting them on and then Sam stares in disbelief at how his arm grew another 2 inches overnight and - wait a minute this is one of Dean’s shirts.
(Dean also got a shirt in season 12 with the same pocket buttons as Sam’s rusty bacon shirt, but I think it was a block colour shirt. Of course.)
Although Sam would never, ever wear the denim shirts Dean does. It’s that sneaky little class divide between them again. Not a major thing, but Sam’s striped shirts vs Dean’s denim and henleys does tell the tale, that no matter how much closer their style seems to get, Sam’s always got that different backstory to his fashion.
(In 3x12 the close up of their feet always makes me notice Dean’s jeans are all fraying and old and Sam’s look new. I think for one thing Sam had to start mostly from scratch after season 1 because he took just a weekend of clothes with him to Jericho. But also just that maybe he has slightly more pride in his clothes while Dean will wear out whatever he can wear out (that doesn’t get too torn or weirdly stained.) I like in 3x11 you get the contrast to their ways of living and hunting with Dean clearly the controlling factor in the boot of the impala being all messy and esoterically organised and Sam locking it down in moulded foam to hold everything… Dean having scruffy trouser legs, dream catchers in the boot of the car, all that jewellery, on the other hand, makes me feel like he’s got much more of an instinctive, stylistic connection to the job as a *lifestyle* rather than a *job*, which was an old theme…
Oh gosh what else :P Well Sam’s new jackets… Yes okay I do actually love he’s getting new jackets which stand out so much as actually being items of clothing instead of boring camouflage/background radiation to being a hunter. You got me >.> I still think Sam’s got a baseline dodgy approach to clothes and style but it’s sort of quirky. It’s VERY Sam to get a red shirt under an orange jacket or to wear a jacket with a plaid lining over a plaid shirt. I mean… I would dress just as badly because it’s still practical over style in many ways.
I also wonder about his shoes because Dean’s boots or at least combat boots in general would be more practical in their line of work and they’re always being accused of dressing in army surplus, but Sam started off wearing trainers and I swear he never wore them on screen but I just headcanon him in converse all stars anywhere in like season 1 and 2 because it goes with the whole student/overgrown child thing the hoodie and backpack did… But anyway his shoes are more grown up styles now but he still doesn’t exactly dress for the JOB, while Dean’s always wearing good boots. I always remember an ex of mine wore similar shoes to Sam and I, being me, had a reputation for being pretty wonky and useless, and we were walking and it began raining, and we were in this plaza with slippery tiles, and my ex was like, “DON’T RUN, YOU’LL DIE” but I was wearing boots with a tread? And I legged it. And he was slippy sliding after me, barely able to function in the rain on a smooth surface. And I was watching from the shelter.
(PS: the moral of this meta is don’t date me unless you understand we are 2 completely autonomous humans because I am awful at being a team player or at willingly getting soaked because you wore the wrong shoes :P)

This was going to be part of my costume meta (which I’m still working on!) but it is too epic to get lost in the big post - I’ll link to this one in the main meta. This little discovery gains more significance after listening to the interview Oliver gave earlier - I’ve linked the @911bts post in case you haven’t heard it.
So Kitchen scene from 6x01 - Buck is wearing a white tee - and we’ve long established that Buck and white tops means trouble! in this instance the trouble is present in the scene - its his tantrum over being passed up for interim captain and actually reflects nicely on to the turmoil his mind is currently in in relation to his personal life with all the loaded sentences about couches and and relationships.
Then there is the the mid to light blue zip front shirt with vertical stripes and a yellowed tint to it - which is a lightweight cotton denim. Its this denim zip shirt I want to talk about because when I realised its significance I gasped (and freaked the person I was sitting net to out) and have spent the rest of today flapping over it.
Tumblr media
I was initially intrigued because we never see buck in denim and then I remembered we have seen him in a denim shirt - just the once - a western style one pictured below which also has a yellowed tint to it!
Tumblr media
This is the only time we have seen Buck wearing a denim shirt until 6x01 (incidentally he is also wearing a white shirt underneath it and the sleeves are rolled up in a similar manner. He’s worn a few different denim jackets etc, but never another shirt.
I was intrigued by this and then I remembered the full context!!!  That western style denim shirt was the one he wore for his coffee shop date with Abby at the end of 1x09. The reason I gasped at this parallel that the costume team have made here hits on a few different levels. Firstly 1x09 is the only other time that blimps are mentioned in 911!! Yes indeed that coffee shop date comes after the failed hot air balloon date and that locker room talk with bobby about blimps and stepping in with someone in a relationship. So not only do we have the blimp parallel, we also have a Buck and Bobby talk in both episodes.
That coffee shop date is when we see Buck really starting his first serious relationship - seeing all the things that come with dating Abby (her Mom’s Alzheimer's for example) - and choosing to embrace them (dare I say that this is the Buck 1.5 KR was speaking about in her interview!) and stepping in for all the difficult stuff. That date was a foundation stone for Buck - what he learnt from that relationship is still present today in what he has been building with Eddie - it was a moment of growth for him and a lesson he took to heart and continues to live by to this day - stepping into Eddie’s mess and supporting him time and again. the difference between them is obvious Abby wasn’t truly interested in building a true relationship where as Eddie has been from the off - he continues to let Buck into places no one else has been allowed.
So here we are post 6x01 with a scene so laden with metaphors and multiple meanings, where body and facial language are very loud in another episode where a there is a blimp in some form. Only this time we have an actual blimp rather than a mentioned one that was actually a mix up with a hot air balloon by Bobby. Bobby who gave the advice which Buck took to heart in 1x09 and which has had far reaching consequences and Bobby who gives Buck more advice in 6x01 which is likely to have far reaching consequences and intertwines with the advice from 1x09.
The fact that the costume team have drawn this parallel won’t be by chance - it will have been discussed at length in production meetings - its like a repeat outfit - only better - repeat outfits are just that - a repeat - they directly invoke the previous time it was worn and suggests a lack of change - the idea of making the same mistakes again whereas a similar outfit used in the same way as a repeat outfit in this specific way (it only works in situations where the character doesn’t normally wear a particular type of clothing like this one where Buck doesn’t wear denim shirts) shows growth - as well as the parallels that can be drawn between the scenes. Ergo Buck is not the same person as he was in 1x09, he has grown. this use of costume and colour (remember the yellow tint I mentioned that both shirts have - well that plays into the yellow and blue colour theory) is a physical and visual way of stating the aims of the show, about the intent of the writers and adds an additional layer to that kitchen scene and only adds further weight to the acting choices - and they all add up to Buddie going canon! this is why Oliver comparing Abby and Eddie in that interview is so interesting and significant.

Maybe you’ve done this before (so feel free to ignore this - actually feel free to ignore it either way if you don’t feel like doing it 😅) , but if you had to pick the wardrobe for Buck, Eddie, and Chris for the buddie canon confirmed episode what would you pick for each of them? Your costume metas are so fun so I think your answer to this would be too. 🖤
DJ my darling!!
this is such a fun ask and I've been pondering on it for a few days!!! What kind of outfit we'll see them in really depends on the location of where we get canon confirmation, as well as when it happens!!
If it happens this season, then I'm kind on hoping we'll get some colour paralleling of the lasagne scene from 6x01 - with yellow and blue being the colours worn - especially as I've been banging on about the use of yellow and blue in queer storytelling for a little while (its in so many other queer stories, especially recently) who is wearing the yellow and who is wearing the blue depends very much on who makes the first move - but I'm kind of leaning towards Buck in yellow and Eddie in blue, because I really feel the blue on Buck has bee na deliberate choice this season and is very much tied into his own healing arc, so I think once he gets to the point of being ready, we'll see him change colours in some way as the blue will have done its narrative job for him! I would quite like to see Buck in either a knit polo of some sort - as he's been wearing a lot of this season, or possibly something simialr to the grey jumper form the kitchen scene. I don't want to see him in a hoodie though - those are for when he's seeking comfort and thats not what he'd be doing in a nbuddie canon scene!
I thinkEddie in blue would be a great choice for him and we've seen it start to creep more into his wardrobe since 5x14 and in brighter tones as well. I also think seeing him in Blue would time in to a couple of interesting touchstones for his own journey - the conversation in Christophers room in 5x17 and the suit he wore to Hen and Karens vow renewal and then in season 6 we've had him in blue sleeping on the couch in 6x09 (as well as a couple of other instances) so I'd really love to see him in blue if for no other reason thang getting to see the couch metaphor play out to its full and natural conclusion!!! I either want Eddie in a traditional henley or in an open shirt and tee combo - which we've seen him wearing more often since mid 5b.
If Chris is involved in Buddie going canon in any way, I'd actually kind of like to see him in grey of some sort - possibly with a nod to whatever colours Buck and Eddie are wearing - and if they happen to be stripes, then so much the better! the reason I want to see him in grey is because its a neutral colour and because as much as Christopher is a central part in them becoming a family unit, I kind of want the buck and Eddie outfits to do all the talking - Buddie should be about buddie and not about buddifer - in much the same way that Chris was there on the fridge in the new kitchen scene - present but not a part of the scene directly, I feel a bit like that should also be the case for them getting together canonically - because they should and will be together because its what they both want for each other and themselves, and not because of Christopher (does that make sense?!!) I'd really love to see Buck wearing maroon at the moment they tell Chris they're together though - really solidifying the maroon and fatherhood aspect and coming full circle with when we've seen Buck in maroon. I'd like to see Eddie in either cream or blue for this as well -
Another reason for wanting blue and yellow is that I'd love the symmetry of their turnouts being blue and yellow and the whole connection to their jobs - it all just ties in so well together and would make me very happy!!!
Of course they could choose to parallel Athena and Bobbys first date and go with brown and blue - which I would also not be mad at, but I feel like the yellow would be a bit more interesting and fitting - especially because of all I've already said 😎
This post is either going to haunt me when I'm a million miles off, or I'm going to drag it out and be really annoying and make it everyones problem if I happen to be right!!!
How did I do?? I hope it was fun to read! thanks for giving me some fun! 💜💜💜

i'm still stuck on eddie wearing his date night shirt for dinner that buck made for him and chris. like yeah okay it wasn't the exact same shirt but it was definitely similar enough to immediately make a viewer draw that connection, right? also when eddie came home from his date with ana, he started pushing his sleeves up, and it seemed like a "i'm home and getting relaxed now" gesture. but in this scene he already has his sleeves pushed up... cause he's at home with buck... is this anything.
Hey Nonnie
Sorry its taken me an age to get to answering your ask - life has been keeping me way to busy for the last couple of weeks and I've only just had time to properly go through my inbox!
I don't think the general audience would necessarily be drawing the parallel between the shirt he wore on his date with Ana and the one he wore in 6x01. If you read my costume meta, you'll have seen that I"m not drawing that parallel either- because the more interesting and more important one is the fact that it is the same shirt as the one from s2 - the connection to a conversation about Shannon and becoming a family again is a far more important one when it comes to Buck and the Buckley-Diaz family. Ana never meant very much to Eddie in reality, so trying to parallel her with buck is doing Buck a massive disservice imo. But Eddie loved Shannon - so drawing that parallel, but using yellow to show Eddies progress - and connecting the idea of family and marriage - thats much more important in relation to Buddie.
The sleeve rolling thing is actually an interesting thing though - we see Eddie with his sleeves pushed or rolled up around Buck fairly frequently (perfect examples are when he disconnects the games console Buck and Chris are playing, the 6x01 dinner and his return home from his date with Ana among others), and if you look at all the scenes when Eddie is with Ana - they are generally pulled down - especially in the break up and both the dates we see them go on - breakfast and math! I'm going to have to go off and check though all my notes to get a full picture - especially to see if Shannon fits into the pattern as well, but theres definitely something to be said about Eddies sleeves and his comfort level, so great spot Nonnie!

Hi Kym!!! Hope you are well! Here with my first costume ask of the season, hehe. ::Rubs hands together:: So I saw a post earlier this week that had a picture of Maddie in What's Your Grievance, as she calls the Buckleys to express her worries about Buck being in therapy. Obviously this issue was a pretty major trigger for her, and what I found Very Interesting is that the shade of her light blue cardigan (worn over a white shirt underneath) looks to my admittedly very untrained eye to be very close to the light blue of Buck's polo in 6x02 that you discussed in your meta. Do you think there's any connection? Light blue is the color of Buckleys about to go through it, apparently, if fandom's observations and predictions about Buck's arc are accurate.
Hey Kate
I'm excited to get your first costume ask of the season - sorry its taken me a few days to get to it, life has been very busy!!
The connection to Maddie in the blue cardigan from Future tense is an interesting one. it is a similar shade of blue - not quite the same - Maddie's is more of a sky or baby blue than Bucks, but they are close enough to be considered the same shade in this context. I also don't think that fact that Buck is in therapy is the thing that connects the two scenes, not do I agree with the fandom assertion that light blue means Buckleys about to go through it and I have a couple of reasons for this, so lets look at all the times Maddie and Buck have worn light blue;
Maddie
3x01 - When Maddie an Chim discuss if they want to have children - Maddie is wearing a white tee with blue stripes and a bright blue shirt over the top
Tumblr media
4x03 - Maddie talks to her Mom on the phone - she's wearing a white camisole and a blue longline cardigan
Tumblr media
5x04 and 12 the video recording of Maddie telling Chimney she's left and not to come looking for her - Maddie wears a bright blue shirt with a line check pattern on.
Tumblr media
Buck
4x05 - Maddie and Buck make peace and Maddie gives Buck the postcards he sent from his travels - Buck wears a white shirt with very pale blue pin stripes and a blue sports jacket
Tumblr media
5x18 - Hen and Karens vow renewal - Buck wears the light blue suit
Tumblr media
6x01 - the lasagne kitchen scene - Buck is wearing a light blue zip front denim shirt with cream pinstripes (I'm including this because although its not technically the same blue, its close enough - my previous connections about this shirt still stand, its just been cleverly woven into this other narrative by the costume team!)
Tumblr media
6x02 - Locker room scene - Buck wears the blue collared waffle knit top
Tumblr media
there are a few times Buck wears a very very pale blue shirt or jumper such as the hoodie he sleeps in in 4x14, but they are a different shade of blue so don't really count towards this!
As you can probably see - none of these scenes connect with a Buckley sibling 'about to go through it' - the only one that fits into that category imo is the blue shirt Maddie is wearing in the video message to Chim - and shes already in t by that point, so I'd argue it still doesn't fit that idea!
In my opinion the connection between all of these scenes is actually family - both history and finding your place and building your family - that search for Happiness (which is the thing we know Buck is actively looking for now, but its also the the thing he's been searching for all his life). We see Maddie's journey - from that first blue top centring around a conversation about children - wanting them but never feeling safe (and we obviously know it was foreshadowing the events of the end of the season and season 4), her concern over Buck being in therapy and wanting to not keep Daniel a secret anymore - the one thing that is stopping her at this point in feeling content in the family she's building for herself, and then when she fears for the safety of her family and chooses to run away - when her mental health is preventing her from being able to feel like she can have the family she has created (in its barest form - PPD has so much angles to it!)
Then there is Buck - his awakened understanding of why he's never felt like he fit with his family - but gains an important pice when he and Maddie make peace and she gives him the postcards he sent her. Then ther eis the important moment when Buck has freed himself from his relationship - an important moment for him as its the first time he's chosen something for himself - he's freed himself from the potential of an unhappy family life (and also the possibility of not actually having a family of his own - we don't know if Taylor wants children but she's so career focused its fair to assume that she may not!) with someone who doesn't fit in with his wider family - the one he's been steadily building. He is also watching a family renewing their commitment to each other - the very thing he wants for himself so the suit is a double whammy of meaning here. Then there is the lasagne shirt - again the family he has been building and a moment of happiness for Buck (he just hasn't fully connected the dots yet), before finally we get the locker room shirt - the most explicit of all of them, but also a follow on from the lasagne scene in many ways.
For me the connection between the two scenes you mentioned specifically is actually Daniel. At the time, we the audience are as in the dark as Buck is about Daniel, but we get these two lines from Maddie;
'He doesn't know anything, but maybe he should'
'How do you tell somebody that you've been lying to them for their entire life'
Daniel is the key to Bucks happiness and the key to Maddies as well - although she has now dealt with much of it - the knowing and not knowing about Daniel created a fugitive and a settler. The fugitive who knows and then runs from it (because thats essentially what her parents have been doing the whole time) because it is something too big to be reckoned with until she has no other choice. And the settler - the one who didn't know and who has found ways of coping - traumatised by something he wasn't aware of and so clung to whatever he could get. Now having taken that first step to freeing himself from clinging to something that isn't working is at a point where he has to reckon with the big trauma because it is the only way to heal - the only way to deal with the associated trauma of always hating who you are and who you have been (hence the software updates - its a way of distancing yourself from a version of you you don't like - you update and don't have to be that version anymore -its no longer a part of you and in your head if you update you can pretend that person is someone else and you don't have to face up to why you behaved a certain way or feel a certain way. Buck being in therapy first time around (with Dr Copeland) was never going to work when he didn't have all the facts and there is a reason we haven't seen or heard of him in therapy since and it all goes back to Daniel - the big thing Buck hasn't faced up to - but is going to have to if he wants to find happiness.
Sorry I don't know if this makes nay sense - I got a bit rambly (and I think I might be projecting a bit of my own experiences onto Buck 😳) Basically what I'm trying to say is that the blue we're talking about is about Daniel and (Maddie and) Bucks first trauma - and those two scenes connect the first time we see the Buckley siblings starting to reckon with that trauma - the recognition that they need to deal with it to be able to live their lives and find happiness. Maddie had bumps along the road, so expect Buck to as well - I would expect to see him in this blue again in correspondence with that!
