What would the world be like if the Portuguese hadn’t existed?!
880 years ago, the signing of the Treaty of Zamora, on October 5, 1143, between King D. Afonso Henriques and King Afonso VII of Galicia, Leon and Castile, confirmed Portugal's independence, maintaining its autonomy to this day.
Portugal, a country of surprising contrasts and cultural diversity, has an inexhaustible source of material, immaterial and human heritage, the result of the Phoenician, Lusitanian, Celtic, Roman and Muslim heritages, its amazing overseas adventure, and communion with other people, knowledge and land - genuine and essential resources for structuring a new and bright Future.

#DegrassiOnThisDay
Lately I’ve been wanting to do a Degrassi re-watch, but I always struggle with where to start. Do I start with a recent season like S13, or should I go all the way back to Degrassi Junior High or TNG Season 1? Then today I was thinking about making a #DegrassiOnThisDay Twitter thread to share what episodes premiered on this date and how long ago. This got me thinking that I could also watch the episodes that premiered on this day. It would be a fun way to re-watch random episodes throughout the year from all different eras of Degrassi. I made a calendar of what episodes premiered when, and I thought I’d share it in case anyone else wants to participate.
How to read this:
Each date indicates which episodes premiered on that day and also the year (e.g. KODS Episode 108 premiered on January 2, 1983 and TNG Episode 609 and 610 premiered on January 2, 2007).
I used short form for each ‘era’ of Degrassi
KODS = The Kids of Degrassi Street
DJH – Degrassi Junior High
DH = Degrassi High
TNG = Degrassi: The Next Generation
DNC = Degrassi Next Class
For each episode, I indicated the very first date it aired. Most of the time this is also the Canadian airdate, but some episodes did premiere in the US first and in those cases I called this out. However Australia airing DNC S2 first is not included
For DNC, I indicated both the Netflix release date and the Family Channel TV premiere, so the episodes are spread out more
I also included the airdates of some of the Degrassi documentaries/specials from over the years

Many Portuguese villages, towns and cities have these elegant toponymic plaques made out of tiles. Also, many Portuguese villages, towns and cities have a October 5th (5 de Outubro) street, avenue or square - after the 1910 revolution, one of the first acts of the Republicans was to change the name of many streets, to remind everyone of the coup that finished a monarchy that,  technically, had started in 1143.

Earmarked paternity leave and relative income within couples
Digital Elixir Earmarked paternity leave and relative income within couples
Jeppe Drudahl, Mette Ejrnæs, Thomas H. Jørgensen 28 July 2019
The stark difference in average earnings between men and women in many western countries hovers around 15%, drawing the attention of politicians and scholars for whom gender inequality is a central issue. Some countries have already implemented policies to reduce gender inequality in the labour market. Recent research suggests that non-transferable parental leave reforms show promise in the fight to reduce gender inequality.
One of the most important drivers of gender inequality in the labour market is the arrival of children. A recent study estimates that around 80% of the difference between the average labour-market income of men and women in Denmark relates to the presence of children (Kleven et al. forthcoming). The average labour market income of women is significantly and permanently reduced after childbirth, while the same is not the case for men. This is an emerging stylised fact in many western countries, including the US and the UK (Kleven et al. forthcoming).
Recently, the European Parliament proposed imposing on member countries the requirement that each parent have the right to two months of non-transferable or ‘earmarked’ paid parental leave. One of the main arguments for earmarked parental leave legislation is that it will decrease gender inequality in the labour market by increasing the incentives for fathers to take more parental leave.
Earmarked paternity leave
Earmarking a portion of paternity leave for fathers increases the amount of leave taken by men. Research based on data from the US, Norway, Sweden, and Canada shows that earmarked paternity leave tends to increase significantly the parental leave taken by fathers (Farré et al. 2019). The question remains whether increasing the paternity leave taken by men has any other consequences for the children and their parents.
Recent research has documented an increase in women’s labour market participation and earnings as a direct consequence of earmarked paternity leave reforms. Earmarked parental leave for fathers increased the labour supply of mothers (Dunatchik et al. 2019), increased women’s earnings from earmarked paternity leave (Johansson 2010, Andersen 2018), and had large, long-lasting effects on gender roles as well as a significant increase in the time spent by women doing paid work in the labour market (Patnaik, forthcoming).
More mixed are the conclusions from research on the consequences for family formation and dissolution. Marital stability has been found significantly reduced as a result of earmarked paternity leave in Sweden (Avdic and Karimi 2018) while no effect has been found in Norway (Dahl et al. 2014) (Cools et al. 2015). One study found that earmarked paternity leave reduced fertility rates (Farré and González 2019); but a positive association between parental leave take-up and fertility has also been documented (Duvander et al. 2010).
In new research, we analyse the effect of earmarked parental leave for fathers on the relative income of women within couples (Druedahl et al. 2019). This is particularly interesting because women’s intra-household share of income likely reflects their bargaining power within the household. In turn, if policy reforms that include earmarked paternity leave shift the income share within households, such reforms have the potential to create permanent shifts in norms, in time allocation within the household, and thus to gender inequality more broadly.
Earmarked paternity leave and relative income within households
We use Danish register data together with a 1998 reform to the parental leave scheme. The reform increased the earmarked paternity leave for fathers to two weeks without changing the parental leave available to mothers. Fathers of children born before 15 October 1997 had two weeks of earmarked paternity leave (often used immediately after childbirth). Fathers of children born on or after 15 October 1997 had a total of four weeks of earmarked paternity leave.
Figure 1
Tumblr media
First, we confirm the findings of the existing literature that earmarked paternity leave increases the amount of leave taken by fathers. Figure 1 illustrates the distribution of the number of weeks taken by first-time fathers who had their firstborn child before the reform (in the years 1995-1997), compared to first-time fathers who had their firstborn after the reform (in the years 1998-2001). We see a substantial shift from the share of first-time fathers taking two weeks of leave to fathers taking four weeks of leave. This response looks particularly large when we take into account the fact that fathers wanting to use this option had to take their leave in weeks 25 and 26 after childbirth. Likewise, we also find evidence of a child penalty for mothers, whose share of income decreases from 42% of household income before birth to around 32% one year after giving birth.
Second, we use this reform to estimate the impact on women’s labour income share within the household stemming from two weeks of increased earmarked paternity leave. We find a significant positive effect, suggesting that mothers’ share of labour income increased around 1.2 percentage points after the reform.
The increase in women’s labour income share arises because women’s labour income increases significantly while men’s labour income is scarcely affected. The effect on women’s labour income is relatively long lasting and remains significantly positive until the firstborn child reaches eight years, as illustrated in Figure 2. This suggests that there might be scope for shifting gender norms through earmarked parental leave reforms like the one proposed by the European Parliament.
Figure 2
Tumblr media
We find that the effect is primarily driven by couples in which the woman was employed in the private sector prior to the first child’s birth. Fathers in this group increased their parental leave take-up by approximately twice as much as fathers in the reference group in which mothers worked in the public sector prior to childbirth. This result is in line with the notion that no long-run effects from taking parental leave exist for women employed in the public sector prior to childbirth (Nielsen et al. 2004).
Our results suggest that even a relatively small increase in earmarked parental leave for fathers can affect the parental leave take-up and subsequent impact on the distribution of labour market income within households. The persistence of the effect indicates that such reforms could shift gender norms and create more permanent consequences. Other research has suggested that norms are hard to change and that the effects of earmarked paternity leave are short-run (Ekberg et al. 2013). An interesting avenue for future research would be to investigate the long-term impact of earmarked parental leave.
The implementation of the European Parliament’s proposal of two months earmarked parental leave would lead to a substantial increase in earmarked leave for fathers in many EU countries and enable future research on the impact of earmarked parental leave outside a Scandinavian welfare model.

However, this time Willie Norman gets to see the 2 mirrors titled military outcome for American born 39 year old Virginia Potter The first mirror is titled 39 year old Virginia Potter as a navy culinary specialist (military cook andor military chef) In this mirror Willie Norman views how Virginia Potter finds out about the different types of foods to watch both within what is popular in the military community and outside the military across the private sector and government populations. As a result, Virginia Potter's financial net worth reaches 5 million dollars after taxes by the time she celebrates her 41st birthday. There are more images for Willie Norman to see in the 39 year old Virginia Potter as a navy culinary specialist yet something tempts Willie Norman to look at the mirror titled 39 year old Virginia Potter as a mass communications specialist (public relations) In this mirror Willie Norman views how Virginia Potter also makes over $500,000 dollars after taxes in early 2000s money from the skills she learns as a navy public relations specialist (mass communications specialist) to promote her fiction books even though she wrote them via pennames by the time she celebrates her 40th birthday. However, Willie Norman also views some caveats/blessings for Virginia Potter; Virginia Potter's work as a mass communications specialist brings her an abundance of promotion and job opportunities including selection from her job as an enlisted E-5 into becoming an enlisted to  officer public affairs officer via the newly created navy second chance prior enlisted officer program put into place for prior enlisted men and women who are at least 35 years old andor older. However, the caveat is that Virginia Potter's work places both herself and her husband in a situation where a financially prosperous Virginia Potter fortunately is also a creative money provider for both herself and her husband which silences even the most socially popular men and women who spread some creative fiction stories of their own of Virginia Potter being some type of gold digger. Virginia Potter intentionally allowed that creative fiction rumor circulate even when she intuitively knew how to silence that gold digging rumor peacefully. However, Virginia Potter allowed even her most creative critics circulate the creative fiction because she intuitively figured out that such a rumor actually was providing intuitive and creative energy for her to manifest her career goals, her body weight and money goals, and her goals of residing wherever she wants regardless of what others thought quicker because of the goal. Additionally, Virginia Potter intuitively figured out that such a goal allowed all the supporters and admirers she has to love her for the personality that she truly has regardless of what others thought. However, the caveat is that the extended time away contributes to Virginia Potter's handsome and amazing husband being tempted by multiple professionally accomplished women where on the plus side the marriage between Virginia Potter and her husband stays intact. However the caveat is that one of the mistresses of her husband comes to Virginia Potter one day in front of one of her navy bosses and boldly declares and admits that the 2 twin red haired girls who look to be around 5 years old she sees before her are her husband's. Willie Norman intuitively sees that Virginia Potter must be open minded for she herself has been living a very wild lifestyle discreetly from the general public. Rather, Virginia Potter is wondering how much child support money that she is going to expected to pony up to her husband's mistress as Virginia Potter intuitively sees through the twin haired girls eyes that the mistress is telling the truth and is going to expect her to help her husband pay the child support money for the twin girls now that she can easily afford the money as a public affairs officer. Virginia Potter also counts herself lucky that her unconventional married love life is one where she is fortunately able to be secretive about it successfully. Willie Norman sees that fortunately the marriage between Virginia Potter and her husband is still intact as a navy culinary specialist in the navy culinary specialist mirror. Additionally, both Virginia Potter and her husband enjoy a voluntary child-free existence where both parents and child-free couples alike are open minded and understanding of their decision. However, the life as a navy culinary specialist has Virginia Potter working a great deal of hours even though her marriage is long distance free. Additionally Willie Norman sees both Virginia Potter and her husband living very wild lifestyle sexually speaking involving other consenting adults with Virginia Potter being more wild and uninhibited than her husband as a navy culinary specialist compared to her being more conservative in public as a mass communications specialist with Virginia Potter being a resourceful money provider for both herself and her husband and even paying for his schooling encouraging him to attend some type of training to become an intelligence officer. However the caveat occurs in the type of partners they secretly choose. Virginia Potter's husband has a taste for the danger in selecting women both who are wealthier than both Virginia Potter and her husband but who like to confront Virginia Potter in public if they sense that she has something to do with the amount of time they see her husband when only her husband decides this despite their perception. Sounds innocent enough until a socially prominent wife of one of her boss's friends boldly confronts Virginia Potter at work in front of the bosses caring little about Virginia Potter's coworkers having her be the talk of the workplace because she freely allows it. Virginia Potter's choice in partners are just as risky as her husband's as a navy culinary specialist. Her most recent partner that kept her company when McKay chase was busy is a civilian who was a former navy coworker which sounds innocent enough because this allows more discretion. Additionally, Virginia Potter learns alot about herself more than she expected which gives her a boost and gift talent in romantically attracting whoever Virginia Potter romantically wants, many of the men that would be simply creative sleeptime dream fantasies who now want her in her waking life as a navy culinary specialist residing in a military dominant area. Virginia Potter is even successful in maintaining discretion in her unconventional married life. However, the caveat is that Virginia Potter is currently romantically juggling at least two other men in her life with successful and secret discretion who have at least 2 to 3 andor sometimes more girlfriends mistresses at a time in addition to Virginia Potter. Because Virginia Potter is married both men admit their dating life to Virginia Potter and they even help Virginia Potter intuitively give her ideas that help and enhance her married life with  Virginia Potter's husband and also creative intuition ideas that enhance both her personal and professional life. For instance, one of the men gave Virginia Potter an idea for a creative fiction story that she found discovered yesterday has attracted the attention of 44 Hollywood script agents, actors, actresses and directors who want to select the creative fiction play for one of their films and to offer Virginia Potter at least $800,000 dollars after taxes upfront in early 2000s money. The second male love gave Virginia Potter an idea for a vacation spot that gave Virginia Potter both intuitive visions in her sleeptime dreams and waking life that has been a profitable stock market investment adding $80,000 dollars after taxes to her money net worth in the span of just 2 days. This all seems innocent enough because the affairs are conducted in secret even with the other women who are dating the 2 lovers of Virginia Potter fully aware of her presence because one of Virginia Potter's male lovers has a picture of her in his home and keeps it there regardless of what others say and the second male lover of Virginia Potter was inspired by the other male lover to leave pictures of himself in Virginia Potter's home knowing full well that she would keep them and thinking outside the box by keeping some music, magazine, and book collections of Virginia Potter's successfully convincing her after they would make love to keep them knowing that Virginia Potter can easily afford duplicates. This career and money success that Virginia Potter is enjoying as a navy culinary specialist while successfully juggling her married and career life the longer she is alive sounds charmed and with good luck and good fortune. However the caveat comes in when a number of the women either connected to the male lovers that Virginia Potter has made love to andor both women andor secret male admirers from her Virginia Potter's professional andor personal life wisely and creatively follow Virginia Potter to a multiple number of her workplaces in the military dominated area of Hampton Roads Virginia Beach Norfolk Virginia area some of them even from the previous place that Virginia Potter resided in before relocating. Virginia Potter actually manages to make the best of multiple men and women who know her following her in a happy way by going ahead and extending her stay at some of the Hampton Roads Virginia navy workplaces whenever possible with the caveat of Virginia Potter intuitively realizing that she also must keep an open mind to extending on the various navy aircraft carrier ships whenever the wisest to follow her creative intuition, which navy aircraft carrier life is also a soap opera in itself even with Virginia Potter now being more popular and more sought after in both her career and personal life.

Evaluating the predictability of medical conditions from social media posts
Over two billion people regularly share information about their daily lives over social media, often revealing who they are, including their sentiments, personality, demographics, and population behavior. [1–4] Because such content is constantly being created outside the context of health care systems and clinical studies, it can reveal disease markers in patients’ daily lives that are otherwise invisible to clinicians and medical researchers.
Social media content has been shown to contain valuable health signals, though mostly at the population level. For example, Twitter has been used to surveil disease outbreaks[5–7], predict heart disease mortality rates[8], and to monitor public sentiment about health insurance [9]. However, studies that link social media activity and medical diagnoses at the individual level are rare [10] and limited to connections with self-reported mental health over limited samples[11, 12], not validated with health records.
We linked consenting patients’ electronic medical records (EMRs) with their social media data,[13] to ask two novel questions: 1) Can we predict individuals’ medical diagnoses from language posted on social media? and 2) Can we identify specific markers of disease from social media posts?
Fig 1 depicts our study design and Table 1 lists participant characteristics. We analyzed 949,530 Facebook status updates containing 20,248,122 words across 999 participants whose posts contained at least 500 words. Using natural language processing [14] each participant’s language was encoded as a 700 dimensional patient language encoding (i.e., we characterize each user’s social media language by 700 numbers). Diagnoses from participant’s electronic medical records were grouped into 21 categories according to the Elixhauser Comorbidity Index [15] and prevalence within our sample (all categories had at least 30 participants). Data selection procedures are detailed in the supplement (S1 Table).

Materials and methods
We evaluated whether consenting patients’ Facebook posts could be used to predict their diagnoses evident in their electronic medical record (EMR). This study was approved by the University of Pennsylvania Institutional Review Board.
Data
Participants were drawn from the ongoing Social Mediome study which began recruitment in March 2014 [13]. Adult patients seeking care in an urban academic health system were invited to share their past social media activity and EMR data. Of all participants enrolled through October 2015 and agreeing to share their Facebook data (N = 1772), we retrieved status updates up to 5 years prior, ranging from March 2009 through October 2015. We then limited our analyses to those with at least 500 words across all of their Facebook status updates (N = 999) as it is found to be a reliable threshold for language analysis of user outcomes. [16]. All data collected from Facebook was from consenting patients and not from anyone in their network, and consistent with the terms of service of the platform.
From the health system’s EMRs, we retrieved demographics (age, sex, and race) and prior diagnoses (by International Classification of Diseases [ICD-9] codes). We grouped ICD-9 codes by Elixhauser Comorbidity Index categories [15],and added categories for medical condition codes not reflected in the index but prevalent in the sample (e.g., pregnancy-related diagnoses) for a total of 41 categories. We then filtered the list of medical condition categories to those attributed to at least 30 patients in the cohort, resulting in 21 categories which are listed in Table 1 along with their ICD-9 codes. Of 1143 patients who shared both social media and EMR data, 999 (87%) had an adequate number of status updates (at least 20).
Language analysis
We analyzed entire timelines (i.e. all prior posts) of messages posted on Facebook by participants who consented to participate in this study. The medical conditions were extracted from the electronic health records associated with each patient. For the analysis, we set a threshold of >500 words per user and each medical condition had to have at least 30 participants. Our approach was to find topics significantly related to medical conditions through statistical analysis instead of selecting specific posts based on search terms which have high noise. We looked at all posts and did not assign posts as health related or not to avoid this noise.
We extracted all words (unigrams) and word pairs (bigrams: two neighboring words—e.g. “sick of”) from each participant’s status updates. We then grouped similar words into 200 “topics” using Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA), a probabilistic technique which automatically clusters words by looking at other words with which they often co-occur [14]. Rather than selecting and grouping words manually, this automatic approach yields topics that may contain slang, misspellings, and variations on contractions which themselves are often predictive [3]. LDA gives us a posterior probability of a topic given a word, p(topic|word), which we use to give each user a topic probability score, p(topic|participant), by multiplying with their probability of mentioning the word:
We generated word clouds to visualize topics using Python (e.g., Fig 2). For each topic, we chose the top 15 words, according to the posterior probability of a word given a topic (p(word|topic)), and scaled the size of the word proportionate to its rank (largest implies most prevalent). The shade of the words is randomly jittered in order to improve readability but has no meaning.

A. Diagnoses Prediction Strength of Demographics and Facebook. This figure represents overall accuracies of Facebook and demographic models at predicting diagnoses. Accuracies were measured using the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC), a measure of discrimination. The category “Facebook alone” represents predictions based only on Facebook language. “Demographics alone” represents predictions from age, sex, and race. “Demographics & Facebook” represents predictions based on a combination of demographics and Facebook posts. Diagnoses are ordered by the difference in AUC between Facebook alone and demographics alone. For the top 10 categories, Facebook predictions are significantly more accurate than those from demographics (p < .05), and for the top 17 plus iron deficiency anemia, Facebook & demographics are significantly more accurate than Facebook alone (p < .05). * Pregnancy analyses only included females. B. Markers (most predictive topics) per diagnosis. This figure illustrates top markers (clusters of similar words from social media language) most predictive of selected diagnoses categories. Word size within topic represents rank order prevalence in the topic. Expletives were edited and represented by stars (i.e. *). All topics shown, except for those with digestive abdominal symptoms, were individually predictive beyond the demographics (multi-test correct p < .05). (Full results in supplement [S2 Table]).
  https://doi.org/10.1371/journal.pone.0215476.g002
While topics provide a coarse-grained set of linguistic features, previous research work in human language analysis has found including individual unigrams and bigrams improves predictive model performance.[1] We included features for the most frequent 20,000 unigrams and bigrams. However, with so many features and only 999 observations, model overfit was a concern [17]. We reduced the word and word pairs to only the top 500 according to their family-wise error rate (alpha) with the given medical conditions using only the training portion within cross-validation (see 10-fold cross-validation below). These 500 word and word pair features with the 200 topics formed our 700 dimensional patient language encoding.
Predicting diagnoses
For each medical condition, we built three predictive models associating Facebook posts with EMR-based diagnoses: Model 1 used Facebook language (unigrams, bigrams, and topics). Model 2 used the demographics of age, sex, and race. Model 3 used both demographics and Facebook language. For each model, we used statistical learning techniques from the field of machine learning [17]. For model 1, which included hundreds of predictors, we used extremely random trees (ERT) [18], variant of random forests which are well suited to handle many predictors. Within each ERT, we used 1,000 estimators with a Gini coefficient as criteria for split points. For model 2, we fit an L2-penalized (ridge) logistic regression, an ideal model when there are relatively few predictors (to confirm, we also ran the ERT approach and found all accuracies were the same or lower). Model 3 was an ensemble of models 1 and 2 created by an average of the predicted probabilities from each model, weighted by the AUC of the model over the training setwhere AUC1 and AUC2 correspond respectively to the training set AUCs for models (1) and (2).
This approach compares the predictive ability of Facebook language (model 1) to that of demographics (model 2) as well as the incremental contribution of Facebook language to demographics (comparing model 3 to model 2). We measured predictive ability using the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC), a measure of discrimination. A value of 0.5 is expected due to chance; a value of 1 indicates perfect prediction. To evaluate controlling for model overfit, we measured AUC with 10-fold cross-validation [17]: we split our sample into 10 equal-sized, non-overlapping, and stratified partitions, fit models over 9 partitions (including the selection of the 500 unigram and bigram features), and tested the fit model on the remaining held-out partition. This process repeats ten iterations such that each partition is used as a the held-out test partition once. We then used a Monte Carlo permutation test [19]with 100,000 iterations to calculate significance of the difference between any two AUCs, correcting for multiple hypothesis testing using the Benjamini-Hochberg False-discovery rate procedure [20]. Testing out of sample as facilitated from 10-fold cross-validation and correcting for multiple tests was key to insuring a rigorous and fair evaluation of predictive accuracies.
Prediction accuracy was evaluated using the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC), a measure of discrimination in which a value of 0.5 is expected due to chance, 0.6 is considered moderate, and above 0.7 is considered a strong prediction from a behavior [17, 18]. Most variables associated with medical conditions tend to have AUCs which fall between .50 and .85 [19], but often include variables derived from invasive tests. As a reference [19], within our sample, body-mass index predicted diabetes with an AUC of .64. Holding to this standard, we consider an AUC of 0.65 and above as strong.
Identifying medical condition markers
Our approach to identifying medical condition markers was similar to that of predicting diagnoses but rather than including all language variables in a model, we considered only one topic at a time. We evaluated each individual topic’s predictive ability by comparing three AUCs: 1) from usage scores for the topic alone, 2) from a logistic regression model [20] over age, sex, and race, and 3) from a logistic regression model over age, sex, race, plus the topic. In this way, we focus simply on one topic at a time in order to illuminate its relationship with the medical condition categories. AUCs were determined out-of-sample when using multiple predictors (i.e. 2 and 3) and a permutation test was used to assess significance of individual topics. We used word clouds to display topics—visual depictions of the most prevalent words in each topic where each word’s size corresponds to its contribution.
We also tested whether we could empirically identify individual markers of diagnoses in the daily social media language of patients. To do this, we considered a portion of the 700 dimensional language encoding which includes 200 topics [14], or sets of similar words (e.g. pain, hospital, blood). We then followed a similar approach as our overall predictive analysis, except treating each individual topic as a potential marker and building models from: 1) usage scores for the topic alone, 2) demographics, and 3) both demographics and the topic. AUCs were determined out-of-sample [20] when using multiple predictors (i.e. cases 1 and 3) and a permutation test [21] was used to assess significance of individual topics along with the Benjamini-Hochberg procedure to control for false discoveries [22]. Further details are provided in the supplement (S1 Text).
In order to explain the predictive ability of a topic in other terms, we listed a couple examples of the increase in likelihood between participants in the top quartile of mentioning a topic and those in the bottom quartile of mentioning the same topic. For example, considering mental health conditions, patients in the top quartile of mentioning the want wanted give ask topic were 4.1 times (95% CI: [1.3, 26.6]) more likely to have been diagnosed with psychoses than those in the bottom quartile of mentioning that same topic. For these calculations, we used maximum likelihood estimates for the mean probability that one had the disease in both the top and bottom quartile and then divided the two probability estimates to get the multiple (e.g. 4.1 times). Finally, we used a bootstrap resampling procedure [20] with 10,000 iterations to calculate 95% confidence intervals for the differences in likelihoods.
All statistical analyses were performed in Python and the exact code used is available as part of the Differential Language Analysis ToolKit (http://dlatk.wwbp.org).
Results and discussion
We identified that: 1) all 21 medical condition categories were predictable from Facebook language beyond chance (multi-test corrected p < .05), 2) 18 categories were better predicted from a combination of demographics and Facebook language than by demographics alone (multi-test corrected p < .05), and 3) 10 categories were better predicted by Facebook language than by the standard demographic factors (age, sex, and race). These results are depicted in Fig 2 which shows the accuracies of the three predictive models across all 21 diagnoses categories.
The medical condition categories for which Facebook statuses show the largest prediction accuracy gains over demographics include diabetes (AUC = .74), pregnancy (AUC = .79; females only) and the mental health categories anxiety (AUC = .66), psychoses (AUC = .58) and depression (AUC = .64).
Fig 2 depicts the individual language markers of diagnoses for selected categories that showed the highest predictive power over and above demographics (p < .05). Many topic markers of diagnoses reveal characteristic behavior or symptoms. For example, alcohol abuse was marked by a topic mentioning drink, drunk, bottle. Topics expressing hostility (e.g. people, dumb, bulls**t, b**ches) were the predominant marker of drug abuse and also marked psychoses. Topics most associated with depression suggested somatization (e.g. stomach, head, hurt) and emotional distress (e.g. pain, crying, tears). Other markers may suggest socio-environmental variables associated with disease risk; for example, diabetes was predicted by religious language (e.g. god, family, pray) even when controlling for demographic variables. This does not mean that everyone mentioning these topics has the condition, but just that those mentioning it are more likely to have it. For example, the top 25% of patients mentioning the (god, family, pray) topic were 15 times (95% CI: [3.16, inf]) more likely to have been diagnosed with diabetes than those in the bottom 25% of mentioning that same topic. This association may be specific to our patient cohort and suggests the potential to explore the role of religion in diabetes management or control.[21–23].
Just as contemporary biobanking aims to collect biosamples that reflect the genome and to link individual genetic information to phenotypic manifestations of health, social media data can be conceived as a “social mediome” whose individual expression can also be banked in a registry and linked to more phenotypic markers of health and disease [10]. Similar to visualizations of gene expression, as depicted in Fig 3, patterns of language can be associated with diagnoses to reveal similarities and difference between diagnoses.

Fig 3. Differential expression of topics across medical conditions within the social mediome.
Analogous to studying the differential expression of a genome, topics of the social mediome can be explored differentially across diagnoses. The 21 rows represent all medical condition categories of the study ordered using hierarchical clustering while the 200 columns indicate the predictive strength[24] (measure by area under the ROC curve) of each potential language marker (topics). Blue topics were more likely to be used by patients with the given medical condition and orange topics were less likely to be mentioned. Medical condition categories each have unique patterns of markers. These encodings allow for the prediction of diagnoses and identification of diagnoses with similar patterns of markers.

Like genomic data banking, the power of social media language to predict diagnoses raises parallel questions about privacy, informed consent, and data ownership. Social media data banking has the advantage that physical biospecimens do not need to be collected—access and consent can occur electronically and remotely, for example by sharing a Twitter handle or one-click authorization of a Facebook application. The extra ease with which social media access can be obtained creates extra obligations to ensure that consent for this kind of use is understood and intended. Efforts are needed to ensure users are informed about how their data can be used, and how they can recall such data. At the same time, such privacy concerns should be understood in the context of existing health privacy risks. It is doubtful that social media users fully understand the extent to which their health is already revealed through activities captured digitally[25]. For example, applications to use social media data-derived risk profiles to price car insurance have already been tested [26].
We found that the language people use in Facebook is predictive of their health conditions reported in an EMR, often more so than typically available demographic data. Although some early research has linked social media language use with health [11, 12, 27] this is the first study to the best of our understanding to do so at the level of the patient with EMR data.
Social media information has the advantage that it often has a built in communication channel back to patients. For example, Facebook now allows users to flag posts within their network that they think may suggest suicidal ideation. Facebook then anonymously provides resources for individuals at risk. A similar patient-centered approach could be applied to a broader set of conditions allowing individuals and their networks (for those who opt-in) to have early insights about their health-related digital footprints. These considerations reveal simultaneous promise and challenge in banking and mining the social mediome and echo similar debates that have arisen around use of the human genome, including logistical and ethical challenges with recontact and communicating risk to patients as predictive ability expands, often in unanticipated ways.
This study has several limitations. Constellations of predictive words often do not represent causal mechanisms and the findings are correlational. However, in revealing what people think, feel, and do, social media patterns capture emotional, cognitive, behavioral and environmental markers that have substantial predictive validity and are otherwise fairly elusive to researchers and clinicians. We equally weighted recent and remote posts in our analyses; adjustment for recency might reveal different or stronger associations. Also, predictive associations of language with disease may vary across populations, requiring rederivation of language markers in different sub-populations that may point to specific, ecologically-appropriate considerations. Further, we utilized logistic regression and extremely randomized trees as modeling algorithms for their interpretability and simplicity considering the number of samples in our study. Prior work has demonstrated, transfer learning from pre-trained text-based multi-layer neural network architectures could lead to higher predictive performance [28]. Also, the participants in this study represented a convenience sample (of primarily African American women) who were receiving care at an urban academic medical center, and not representative of the general population. Prior work has shown that users vary in the amount and diversity of self-representation across different online platforms[16, 29]. Future studies could compare difference in health related information disclosed by users of different demographic populations and on other social media platforms (e.g. Twitter).
Social media, like genomic information, offers enormous promise to personalize health care. This work is complementary to a growing body of literature using big data analytics for EMR data [30–32] and provides new insights for applying machine learning to find signal about health in non-healthcare generated data (e.g. social media).
People’s personality, mental state, and health behaviors are all reflected in their social media and all have tremendous impact on health. This is the first study to show that language on Facebook can predict diagnoses within people’s health record, revealing new opportunities to personalize care and understand how patients’ ordinary daily lives relate to their health

In a revolution in Portugal the monarchy was overthrown and a republic was declared on October 5, 1910.
 Portugal Republic Day
Portugal’s Republic Day is celebrated on October 5 every year and is also known as ‘Implantation of the Republic’ in Portugal. This important day marks the overthrow of the monarchy, the House of Braganca, in 1910. The monarchy had been in power since the 11th century and was replaced by a republican form of government in a bloodless revolution. It also brought about civil and religious liberties. It is a public holiday with schools, state offices, and some restaurants being closed. Like other public holidays in Portugal, Republic Day is not moved to a weekday if it falls on a weekend.
History of Portugal Republic Day
Portugal’s Republic Day commemorates the deposition of the centuries-old Portuguese monarchy and the establishment of the First Portuguese Republic. It was the result of a coup led by the “Portuguese Republican Party.”
By 1910, the Portuguese Kingdom was in the middle of a crisis with people increasingly resenting the royal family due to the 1890 British Ultimatum which demanded the retreat of the Portuguese military forces from the territory between the colonies of Angola and Mozambique, the royal family’s expenses, the assassination of the King and his heir, transforming religious and social views, instability of political parties, Joao Franco’s dictatorship,  and the regime’s inability to adapt to modern times. This national anger helped proponents of the Republican Party to take advantage of the situation. The party skillfully presented itself as the only one capable of returning the country to its original glorious status and advancing its progress.
The military was reluctant to fight the nearly two thousand soldiers and sailors that rebelled between October 3 and 4, and so the Republic was proclaimed the next day from the Lisbon City Hall. A provisional government led by Teófilo Braga led the country till the Constitution was approved, marking the beginning of the First Republic. National symbols like the national anthem and the flag were changed, along with some changes in civil and religious liberties.
The deposed King Manuel II departed from Ericeira and lived out the rest of his days in exile. At the time, Portugal was worried about being recognized by other countries as most European states were monarchies. But soon enough, through skillful diplomacy by the Foreign Affairs Minister, the country was officially recognized by the United Kingdom, France, China, Spain, Italy, Russia, and others.
