The ocean and its inhabitants face a rising tide of threats. Pollution, overfishing, and climate change make for an uncertain future. We’re working to understand this incredible habitat and how animals there will navigate these changes. The ocean needs our help. All life—including us—depends on a healthy ocean. 23/30 #30daysofocean After a brief break we continue with our series. I just wish I would have used a better quality paper. This ended up pretty warped. (at Columbus, Ohio) https://www.instagram.com/p/BupC9V4hQ9G/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=ktz0s42xm0u8

A global array of robotic floats is transforming how scientists observe ocean health.
The GO-BGC Array is a five-year project funded by the National Science Foundation to build a global network of floats equipped with chemical and biological sensors to monitor ocean health. The project brings together researchers from MBARI, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, Scripps Institution of Oceanography, University of Washington, and Princeton University to build and deploy 500 robotic biogeochemical floats around the globe.
A single robotic float costs the same as two days at sea on a research ship. The floats can collect data autonomously for more than five years in remote areas and in all seasons, including during winter storms, when shipboard work is limited. This game-changing technology is transforming how oceanographers and climate scientists observe and understand our changing ocean. Data streaming from the float array becomes available in near-real-time and is made freely available to researchers, educators, and policymakers around the world. Sharing these data brings new opportunities to learn, collaborate, and inspire collective action for our changing ocean. Learn more about the project and check out the data here: https://www.go-bgc.org/

This June, in honor of National Ocean Month, we highlighted the game-changing technology that enables us to monitor and better understand the health of the ocean and the diverse life that calls it home.
One of the most exciting developments that leverages the teamwork between scientists and engineers at MBARI is the combination of two MBARI innovations—a long-range autonomous underwater vehicle and a novel “laboratory in a can”—to survey the drifting bits of genetic material known as environmental DNA (eDNA) left behind by marine life. These cutting-edge robots can give us new insight into biodiversity changes in sensitive areas and track rare, endangered, and invasive species–all critical to understanding and maintaining a healthy ocean.

Good data are key to addressing major threats to the ocean, including climate change. This technology allows us to access and monitor eDNA more efficiently and spot changes much more quickly–which are critical in efforts to tackle climate change.
The ocean is the big blue heart of our planet. Ultimately, we need a diversity of perspectives and minds to solve the challenges it faces. When scientists from all disciplines work with engineers and communicators, we can inspire collective action for the ocean, together. Learn more about eDNA on our website.

June is National Ocean Month, a celebration of the many ways the ocean sustains life and livelihoods. Throughout the month, we’ll highlight game-changing technologies that are creating a healthier planet and people by helping us better understand the ocean and the diverse life that call it home.
The ocean provides critical life support for humans, but the health of the ocean is taking a hit. Climate change, overfishing, and pollution all have serious, long-term negative consequences for our ocean. To effectively steward the ocean for the health of the planet and humankind, we urgently need new data about what is happening under the water. This week, we are highlighting how MBARI’s Environmental Sample Processor (ESP) brings the lab into the ocean to help scientists and resource managers monitor and count endangered and invasive species.
youtube
All watersheds on the planet drain into the ocean and there are many fishes that are diadromous—migrating between freshwater and saltwater—such as salmon and trout. To effectively monitor ecosystems that support endangered and threatened species like coho salmon and steelhead trout, MBARI researchers partnered with @NOAA to use the ESP, a robotic “laboratory in a can,” to filter environmental DNA (eDNA) in order to sample and detect drifting bits of genetic material that allow us to examine organisms without ever seeing or catching them. Find out how this groundbreaking technology is helping researchers fish for eDNA at https://mbari.co/eDNA
