xB liked it underground. He liked the grand big caves whose ceilings seemed to stretch upwards for thousands of blocks. He liked small narrow alleyways of rock, mere cracks that might lead to something undiscovered. He liked lush caves for their light and life, and he adored underwater caves for the peace they brought him.
He often went exploring, finding those carved out treasures that felt like secrets between him and whatever forces had made them.
The caves weren’t dead things. There were monsters and water and animals and even the odd cow or chicken. But there were things more ancient, more alive down in the ground. xB could hear them. There were caves that seemed so empty, but stunk of unrest. He could hear unearthly shrieks below the deepslate he walked on. He knew there was something else, he knew it, and he intended on finding it.
Perhaps, if he had a mind to turn back to later, he would have reflected that perhaps the noises in the caves had become some kind of siren song to him. Because he had found the dead ancient city quite easily, too easily. It was covered in liquid night’s sky, making the crumbling buildings breathe. He had stood on a rock outcropping above the city, looking over the structures that seemed to stretch on for many blocks, all blanketed with this dark substance that, weirdly enough, looked like the colors of his hoodie. Dark blue and black. Almost like it was made for him and only him to find. The biggest secret he’d ever come across, for him and the breathing stuff, the skulk, to share alone.
It was his secret, it just felt right that this was all his. And so he reached out a pale hand and touched the stuff, the skulk. And as it breathed it also lived, and perhaps xB could have seen this coming. The skulk leapt at him, taking his hand like a long-lasting kiss to a princess, and pulled him in.
It wasn’t painful, the takeover of xB’s body. Like sliding into the dark pools of underwater caves. Effortless, beautiful.
And when xB emerged from the earth, after digging with only his hands and broken fingernails, he wasn’t Man anymore. The skulk was his skin, tendrils breathing against his arms and legs, glowing even in the sunlight, slick like he’d just come out of the water. His lips were stained a dark, dark blue and didn’t close now. His eyes were crusted over like they reflected the night sky- black with pinpricks of pulsing light that could have been stars. He couldn’t see. He didn’t need to see.
And xB, or the shell of him, began to stagger towards the far-off smell of civilization, leaving prints of skulk in its wake that sparkled like the inky night’s sky.

In the early hours of August 25, 1988, a fire started at the Grandella department store in Rua do Carmo (Carmo Street) and quickly spread to Rua Garrett (Garrett Street) and others, affecting a total of 18 buildings (corresponding to an 8000 m2 land footprint) in the Chiado area, of which 11 were full losses with structure collapse, including the Armazéns do Chiado and Grandella department stores, that never reopened, along with several other historical shops also destroyed,
The fire was fought by 1,680 firefighters from throughout the country, and was put out by 16:00 local time.
