Another promotional CD found in packages of cat food, this time a three track disc from the Dutch Tour that took place between 2006 and 2007.
The CD has full cast renditions of Jellicle Songs for Jellicle Cats, Magical Mister Mistoffelees, and Skimbleshanks, The Railway Cat. I am fairly sure I checked and these are the same versions found on the highlights cast recording CD released later on, but I would have to double check.
This piece is one of the more special in my collection, as it was a gift from someone special who is also a fellow merchandise collector.

So I was looking at a video relating to the Dutch Tour 2006 and I noticed three things:
This cast does not entirely look like the cast I know
That Munkustrap kinda looks like Jack Rebaldi and not Roberto or Pierre
Bombalurina is singing Jemima's part in Memory!
I was so confused but I think I figured it out. I'm fairly sure it was (at least partially) the last German Tour cast (which is why I recognised Jack Rebaldi) with some members of the then upcoming Dutch Tour cast. The actress playing Bomba in the German Tour was Dutch so she might have been the only one able to sing the part at the time... Still, I love love love Bombalurina joining in in Memory!

HELLO! I've started noticing random lyric changes in bootlegs of Broadway/West End Phantom... is there a timeline to why these changes occurred? Randomly? Is there any rhyme or reason? i.e. "Christine are you alright" in 2023 or the order of Masquerade lyrics switching in 2014 (?) or Bravi vs Brava. Just curious!
That's a pretty tall order, but I'll do my best! But there is definitely a rhyme and reason to it all, you just have to follow the timeline while taking into account that there will also be differences between productions and between actors as well. Keep in mind too that especially in its early days, it's not uncommon for a show to be tinkered with and it's lyrics altered as they get it running.
The first difference (if we don't count the Sydmonton production which was more of a concept production, but you can read about some lyric differences here) come between the original London production when it opened and the original London cast recording. There's already a difference in the 'Think of Me' lyrics, with the production opening with the lines, "Fly away, but when you lie awake" while the cast recording simply repeats, "We never said our love was evergreen", among other things. Furthermore, the London production had an extra line for Raoul in 'Little Lotte', where he says, in response to Christine talking about the Angel of Music, "No one could have sung the way you did tonight without a little help from him." By 1987 this line was cut, I assume because it's a tad redundant.
Many of the initial lyric changes came from 1988 Broadway transfer, such the changes to 'Think of Me', adding more lines for Piangi in 'Notes I', changing 'Wandering Child' from a trio to a duet, altering some lines in 'Point of No Return', flipping a line or two in 'Down Once More', and so on and so on. None of them make massive changes to the story or plot, but they are alterations all the same. You can read about all those changes here.
One more important addition was made in 1989, either for the opening of the Los Angeles sit-down production or the Toronto one, and that was the reprise of the line, "Help me to say goodbye" in 'Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again', which was added to end the song on a more powerful note. Since this was added in 1989, if you listen to any international productions that began before this period (such as Japan, Vienna, or the original Stockholm production), they will not have that additional lyric.
From here things start to get funky. Starting as early as 1990 in the London production, the production began using alternate lyrics for 'Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again', which began with the line, "Three long years..." There were used up until around mid-2002, when they were changed back to the more common, "Passing bells and sculpted angels". However, one or two productions that based their libretto off of London's would also use it, such as the Dutch production, and it would make a surprise return in the restaged US tour.
One other change I can think of came in 2006 with the Las Vegas production. Most of the changes in Vegas were because the show was cut down to a 90-minute, one act show, so most of them did not apply to other productions, but they did alter two words in 'Think of Me', going from, "Think of August when the trees were green" to "Think of August when the world was green". This is notable mainly because the line started showing up sporadically in other productions, such as the 25th anniversary concert (probably because SIerra Boggess was an original Vegas Christine) and Broadway.
From 2014 onward, another change: the song 'Wandering Child', which had been sung as a duet everywhere in the world except London, some of the UK tours, and some non-replicas, was changed back to the trio, and this was enforced across all productions except non-replicas, which can probably do what they want. That being said, there were still some lyric differences between London and other productions worldwide, which I go over here.
Finally, when the show was revived in London and reopened on Broadway after the COVID shutdown, there were multiple lyrics changed. The most famous is the one for 'Angel of Music', done to accommodate Christines of color but which underwent several changes in the first few months, but there are changes scattered everywhere, though some were reverted a few months later, which was just very funny to me. I go over it a bit here.
All right, got all the major timeline changes down? Great! Because now we're going to add another layer of complexity: production differences! Because as you might have noted, some productions have different lyrics between them, or will omit or add lyrics. The most notable are the differences between London vs. Broadway, and this is where you get things like the different 'Masquerade' lyrics (London has one version, Broadway has another that tends to be used worldwide), the use of "viper" vs. "vixen", Christine's hopes lying "shattered" or "murdered", and many others. I go over quite a bit of it here. Unfortunately, when the London production was revived, most of these differences were lost.
More changes came with the 25th anniversary concert, most of which were to accommodate the changed setting. These were then used in the restaged UK and US tours, but with even more alterations, with some again being done because of differences in the staging or props but others just because. I go over it here, and an additional one here, and I also discuss an old line being brought back to the concert here.
And finally, once you have all the timeline and production differences down, you have to account for the fact that in a few places, actors have a choice in what lyrics they can sing. One of the most famous is whether the Phantom chooses to sing "far-reaching gaze" or "fathering gaze" in 'Wandering Child', something that goes back all the way to the 1990s. Heck, some actors, like Hugh Panaro, will switch the word depending on their run or their mood.
And then when you get into "bravo" vs. "bravi" vs. "brava" (or "bravissima" vs. "bravissimi"), I can only assume it's a whole combination of the above. Keep in mind that both Raoul and the Phantom say variations of those words so it gets pretty complicated pretty fast. Officially, Raoul should say "bravo" and most do, but then in the Canadian production, whether due to direction or tradition, they almost all say "brava". Meanwhile, some librettos, such as the original and the Las Vegas one, state that the Phantom should sing, "Bravi, bravi, bravissimi", but later librettos, the 2004 film, or the RAH concert states it should be, "Brava, brava, bravissima". I wondered if they might be a little more consistent in the Romance-language productions (Brazil, France and the French dub, Italian dub, Mexico, Romania, Spain), but nope, it's all over the place there, which leads me to think that they don't actually care that much - except, naturally, for the Italian dub, which has Raoul congratulating Christine with, "Brava!" and the Phantom congratulating Christine with, "Brava, brava, bravissima".
So we'll see what they do in the actual Italian production! Don't let us down, Bradley Jaden and Ramin Karimloo.

🧵🧠🎯
🧵 What's your favorite production and why?
I really love the cast of the 2006 Dutch tour, everyone’s voices and acting are just fantastic. I also love the costumes and wigs in the uk/int 2022 tour. Also Oasis because they have the best makeup and they kept the original choreo
🧠 Share a headcanon/theory about the show that you like!
A recent headcanon of my own that I’m obsessed with is Rumpus Cat being a real guy (rather than George/Alonzo dressed up). Munkustrap had to write him a fan letter asking if he’d make a cameo appearance at the Jellicle Ball and was disappointed when Rumpus Cat was more of a doofus than he’d been led to believe.
🎯 What's a common headcanon/theory/interpretation that you don't prescribe to?
*subscribe
I don’t like the headcanon that Mistoffelees is a young, inexperienced magician whose first big act of magic is bringing back Old Deuteronomy. It’s not talked about terribly often but when it is it just feels so incorrect. His song is all about how renowned and polished a magician he is. I see him as youngish (in most replicas at least), but he’s still an established conjuring cat.

Gräfin Eszterházy (Elisabeth)
As you can have guessed by my username, Gräfin Eszterházy is one my favourite musical characters. The character isn't historically accurate, because she is Elisabeth's main lady in waiting almost the whole musical, but real Sisi had more of them during her life.
Sophie Eszterházy-Liechtenstein was Sisi's lady in waiting in 1854-1862. She was Sisi's first lady in waiting and the Empress didn't choose her herself. It is said that they didn't have a good relationship, because Gräfin Sophie was much older than Empress Sisi.
In the musical Sophie Eszterházy agrees with Archduchess Sophie, but also helps young Elisabeth. Her character is very interesting, but so underrated.
I tried to find all the actresses that played Gräfin Eszterházy, but since she isn't always considered as main character (which she should), there aren't records about all the actresses. I didn't find all the alternates and swings yet, so here you have only the Erstbesetzung for most of the productions.

Movies I watched this Week #124 (Year 3/Week 20):
Costa Brava, Lebanon, my 5th bittersweet Lebanese film, debut feature from a young female director. A family of five escaped the chaos of near-future, dysfunctional Beirut to a rural, isolated compound in the mountains. But after 8 years of building a loving nest for themselves, a landfill is being constructed next to their plot and their ideal world implodes. The city trash they tried to leave behind is following them here.
The wife is being played by Nadine Labaki, who directed the Oscar-nominated ‘Capernaum’, which I’m going to watch next. The two young girls are terrific too.
The trailer. 7/10.
🍿
Another controversial first feature from a female director, Instinct by the Dutch Halina Reijn [who went after that to direct A24′s ‘Bodies Bodies Bodies’]. An intense psychological thriller about prison therapist Carice van Houten becoming obsessed with an inmate, a violent serial rapist on the verge of being paroled.
Exploring female rape fantasies is a recipe for sensationalism and manipulation, when played out for example by male-gazing misogynists like Paul Verhoeven. But in Reijn hands this dark and ominous tale is (for the most par) told with nuance and ambiguity. A powerful 7/10.
The trailer.
🍿
Massimo Troisi X2:
🍿 Re-watch: Englishman Michael Radford’s Italian classic Il Postino. A nostalgic and enchanting story of a simple postman and his friendship with Chilean poet Pablo Noruda on a small Mediterranean island in the 1950′s. Similar vibes as ‘Cinema Paradiso’, which came a few years earlier, and which also starred Philippe Noiret. A Massimo Troisi’s passion project, and infamous for him dying the very next day after principal photography ended. 10/10.
🍿 Massimo Troisi was actually an acclaimed director, screenwriter and actor before playing ‘The Postman’. But his directorial debut comedy I'm Starting from Three (Ricomincio da tre), with himself as a shy, bumbling caricature of a young man, was nothing but funny. 1/10.
Both movies feature my favorite character actor Renato Scarpa, the memorable inspector from ‘Don’t look now’ (“Signor Baaxter!”).
🍿
Paul McCartney: The Space Within Us, an infectious 2006 concert film, documenting his smashing “US” tour (37 US shows, 565,000 tickets sold, $77 million taken in), when he was 64...
The director of this documentary was absolutely terrible; He filled up the two hours with extremely fast zooms in and out, nervous camera movements, super-quick editing and too many sappy reaction shots of adoring fans in the audience (lots of parents and grandparents with children of all ages, though!). Also, too many celebrities ‘Talking Heads’ emoting how great McCartney is, which was off-putting. Still, the incredible performances of the band, the sensational, live-wire concerts, the enthusiastic music made it a tearful inspiration.
My best film experience of the week! 9/10.
On McCartney’s website, there's a list of 25 documentaries about him, which I will watch one by one, Inshallah.
🍿
In the fine M.C. Escher: Journey to Infinity documentary, he claimed that he was not an artist, but a mathematician. The film brings to life his  geometric-abstract visions. And while it touches on the relationship between him and Bach’s, it never mentions Gödel. Not crazy about the Stephen Fry narration. 8/10. (Photo Above).
🍿
Documentary No. 3 of the week: Still, the new heartfelt Michael J. Fox bio-pix combines lots of re-enactments with footage from old movies, as well as some current heart-to-heart interviews about his Parkinson’s.
As a celebrity portrait, it wasn’t relevant to me at all, since I never saw any of his TV work, or even his movies. But the parts about his disability were powerful though.
🍿
2 Russian classics that didn’t resonate with me:
🍿 First watch: Tarkovsky’s 3-hour-long experimental poem about memory, Solaris, his attempt to show that ‘Science-fiction films don’t have to be emotionally shallow’. It must have had a strong influence to the game ‘Myst’, being cultish, mysterious and atmospheric. But its slow-moving premise became so boring to me, that it took me 3 days to finish it. Comparing it to 2001 is unjustified. 2/10.
I planned on following it up with Steven Soderbergh’s later version, but then I hard-passed: Disliking science-fiction movies in general, and hating Hollywood remakes in particular is not a good incentive.
🍿 The Cranes Are Flying, a Soviet World War 2 drama from 1957. As a political expression of the new era after Stalin’s death, it may have been be significant, but today it seems a simple propaganda piece, with some bold visuals. 2/10.
🍿
Mika Kaurismäki is Aki’s older brother and the one who got him interested in movie making. My first film by him, Helsinki Napoli All Night Long was disappointing though: An European-Noir inspired by hardcore American crime stories, and even the cameos of Eddie Constantine, Sam Fuller, Jim Jarmusch and Wim Wender didn’t save it from being a poor parody. 1/10.
🍿
You Can Live Forever, a shallow Canadian romance of two young girls, one of which is a Jehovah Witness, torn between her faith and her love. The other one looks like young Scarlett Johansson but can’t act like her. The flat queer coming-of-age against a fucked-up puritan background had no subtext. It felt auto-biographical, and it actually was. 2/10.
🍿
Who done it?, My 4th (atrocious!) film by Basil Dearden. After 2 unsung masterpieces (’Victim’ and ‘All night long’), and another thought-provoking work (‘Sapphire), this was a terrible ‘Ouch’. A late Ealing Studios low-brow, un-funny ‘comedy’ and Benny Hill's film debut as a bumbling Inspector Clouseau-like fool. Very disappointing 1/10.
🍿
“Put him in a straitjacket and give him an enema! Wait, give him an enema first, then put him in a straitjacket!”
Dracula, dead and loving it, the last film directed by Mel Brooks, an underrated (?) gothic parody. But he already did a much better Transylvanian castle spoof with ‘Young Frankenstein’, and this one just sucked. Leslie Nielsen sporting a Borat accent, and Brooks double-playing the Hungarian angle. The silliness of the occult, should be good for parodies, but not here. 1/10.
As a successful producer, Mel Brooks made ‘The elephant man’, ‘Frances’, ‘The fly’, others...
🍿
2 British shorts by Sam Baron, both with the same Amit Shah:
🍿 Big ears, a little story about a gawky young man with large Obama-ears, who gets very bad news.
🍿 “Hi, I’m here for the orgy” - His earlier short was crisper (and funnier). The orgy, a 15-min. comedy about the same lonely, awkward man who goes to his first orgy. 6/10.
🍿
I adored Jonathan Glazer’s three previous films (’Sexy Beast’, ‘Birth’, and ‘Under the skin’), so I’m eagerly waiting for what is supposedly a new disturbing masterpiece from him, ‘The zone of Interest’ (It was based on a novel by Martin Amis, who just died yesterday!).
Glazer used to have a YouTube channel with some of the many film-like commercials he had directed before branching into features. Here are a few of his standalone ads:
Stella Artois Ice Skating Priests, Last orders and Devil's Island (with Ron Perlman) *
Sony Bravia Paint *
Guinness’s Surfer and Swimblack and Dreamer *
Levi’s Kung Fu and Odyssey *
Wrangler’s Ride *
Barclay Bank’s Centaur (with Samuel L Jackson) *
Apple watch Flight *
More Here *
Unrelated: Christopher Walken Sky-dancing in Fatboy slim Weapon of choice, by Spike Jonze.
🍿
Throw-back to the "Art project”:
🍿

Welcome to Volbeat!
Tumblr media
Here's your pocket guide to the band.
Below the cut, you will find: the current band members, the past band members, Volbeat's discography, a basic history, and a directory of my tags.
If some sections are incomplete, it will be updated when I am able to do so.
Volbeat. The Band.
This Danish rock band formed in 2001 in Copenhagen. They play a fusion of rock and roll, heavy metal and rockabilly. The band is signed to Dutch label Mascot Records. The current line up consists of Michael Poulsen, Kaspar Boye Larsen, and Jon Larsen (no relation). As of now, they are currently touring with Flemming C. Lund as their stand-in lead guitarist.
The band name "Volbeat" was derived from an album name of Michael's previous band, Dominus (1992-2001). Dominus's third album was titled Vol.Beat (read as: Volume Beat). Dominus was a death metal band and they parted ways when Michael wanted to leave the death metal scene and focus on a more personally stylized sound.
Their fanbase and website exclusive content is called the Rebels & Angels. Signing up is free and you can view content such as tour photos, tour pre-sales, the official band history verbiage, and wallpaper artworks.
One of the artists that does most of their album artwork is Karsten Sand. Here is a link to his Volbeat artworks on his official website.
The band's touring photographer since 2016 has been Britt Bowman. Here's a link to her Instagram and her website.

Leviathan's Tumblr Tags.
To save confusion in this post, I will be writing my hashtags within quotation marks. If there is no description underneath the tag, that is because I believe it is self-explanatory.
In addition to these tags, each member, album, song, and year will have their own tags. I will also be tagging locations and venue names when I can find them and their instruments that they are using. I've also started tagging what they're wearing. Wanna see who's a Misfits fan? Search on my page for "Misfits shirt" or any other band. (I've just started this so the variety won't be much at first)
"Leviathan opens her mouth"
This tag will be used on my personal blog posts. The content of these posts will generally be whatever's on my mind at the time.
"On the mind"
This tag will be used for other people's blog posts. The content here is basically other people's opinions.
"Ask box"
Answers/responses to my ask box.
"Volbeat gifs"
"Music"
This tag will have audio attachments that will allow you to listen to whichever song. As of now, they're all Volbeat songs. If I mention a different band, their music will be linked outside of tumblr and will probably be tagged "find new music".
"Volbeat TikTok"
Where I repost Volbeat's TikTok videos.
"Volbeat discography"
Information regarding Volbeat's albums.
"Volbeat lyrics"
"Volbeat news"
"Volbeat interview"
"Volbeat history"
"Volbeat band art"
Official artworks for the band including art for albums, promos, and merchandise.
"Volbeat band fanart"
"Michael imitating Elvis"
I'm not entirely sure I'll have much for this tag but I have noticed that Michael likes to imitate his idol 😊
"Elvis fan"
Similar but different to the last tag. This will be pretty much any reference Michael makes about his love for The King.
"The many faces of a rockabilly metal dork"
The collection of funny faces that Michael makes. I think he got bored over years of having his picture taken, he's started making weird faces lol
"Muskles"
When Michael does that thing where he pretends to have bigger biceps
"Michael's devil horns"
The iconic devil horns that Michael is contractually obliged to make at least once per concert. Just kidding, but he really does do it often 😂
"Michael's T Shirts"
I'll find the exact shirt that he's wearing in an image and give some background on what it is. This is generally going to be his band shirts and I'll also add YouTube links to some of their music for you to check out!
"Michael's Tattoos"/"Kaspar's Tattoos"/"Rob's Tattoos"
"Michael Wearing Glasses"/"Kaspar Wearing Glasses"
"Rob with his hair down"
"Guitar gun"
When the guys look down the neck of their guitar like it's a gun barrel. (I've seen Michael and Thomas do this)
"Volbeat concert images"
"Cadillac Blood Lore"
"Lockscreens"
"Volbeat band memes"
"Volbeat dreams"
I know you have them! Send the story to my ask box and I'll post it with this tag!
"Volbeat Concert Stories"
Send them in!
"Stage Talk"
Stuff that was said during a concert.
"Leviathans Volbeat Pokemon card"
This was a joke but i got a Volbeat pokemon card so that if I ever meet them, I can have them sign it. (I'm not even into pokemon, I just thought it'd be funny - its probably not that original though)
These tags will be updated if I add more. Some of them don't have anything yet, but that is because they are in my queue. If you don't see anything under the tag, try searching directly from my page instead of the entirety of Tumblr. Sometimes they don't show up otherwise 😬
If you have any Volbeat content or opinions, feel free to send them my way!

My program books have been delivered!
Tumblr media
I got the one for the Dutch Tour 2006, but haven't looked at it much yet. The one at the top I thought would be of Amsterdam 1987, but it seems to actually be from Amsterdam 1988. A pleasant surprise to be sure!
I would still like to add one of 1987 to my collection eventually. I also wonder if any programs exist from Amsterdam 1992... Haven't seen them available anywhere yet, but I'm keeping an eye on it.
