Starting with August 12, I decided to tackle the mysterious hatch latch mechanism that has plagued me since I bought the car. The system was never able to close and keep the rear window latched. So I took it apart!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Here you can see the rather simple mechanism. The handle turns a plate which tugs on some wires, rotating the armature and pulling on some spring-loaded fingers that latch the window. The "L"-shaped arms were covered in a nasty, sticky yellow gunk. I proceded to clean and re-grease all the moving parts with white lithium grease.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Clean! Greasy! I then reassembled the guts into the car at 1:30 am on the 13th. The system works now, but the window latches a little too nicely. The fingers now don't let go, so I will have to pursue that later.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Today, I worked on making a new license plate light and mounting bracket. I used 26 gauge galvanized steel I picked up from Lowe's. Really easy to cut through with a cutoff wheel or dremel. The wire holes aren't the nicest cuts, but nobody should be looking at them. I still want to trim the edges past the lights down.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Here it is on the car. This is an old plate we had lying around I used for mocking this up. It's not original, but I think it looks good! I need to ground the negative wire, but it just needs a bolt.

No photos for a little bit, my phone decided to take a swim.
I did get some of my suspension parts into the car today. Lower arm, upper arm, strut rod arm, knuckle, spring perch, and spring went in today. The new bushings are a little tough to get in the spots the old ones were in. All I did was use a ton of the Prothane Super Grease to lube up the spots where bushings needed to go in and used a combination of curse words, muscle, and rubber mallets.
My dad helped center the upper arm bushings with the holes in the frame using some pin punches. I pushed and rotated the arm until we could get a bolt through. Then I put on the lock nuts hand tight.
The spring was the worst part. I got one of the Autozone rental compressors as I did not trust the 1986 Harbor Freight ones. The success happened after an hour of messing around with the spring. The winning formula was to place the two loose arms on the bottom-most coil, but 90 degrees from the points on the spring perch where the coil rests. The fork needs to be as close to the top as possible and about 20-30 degrees clocked from the lower hooks. It needed to be oriented so the fork could be pulled out away from the car.
I also had the spring perch not attached to the upper arm until after the spring was in.
Hopefully tomorrow will be less rainy and I can get some more work done.

Note
at risk of sounding like one of those people, do you have any recommended films for someone who wants to look into horror but doesnt know where to start? Everywhere I've seen just recommends the same 4 or so 80s slasher movies. Or an anthology of some kind that showcases the different subgenres, ik things like that exist for SFF but I dont know enough about the horror genre to know where to look for stuff there
hmmm ill try, just know these will be biased towards my tastes which wont always align with yours. also im too lazy to add warnings for everything - please research for your safety if you're concerned abt triggers/disturbing content

BEWARE
WF THOUGHTS (3/14/24).
A gremlin just called me with a warning. He said: “Beware the Ides of March.”
You’re probably reading this on March 15th. Be careful. It’s supposed to be an unlucky day.
The whole “Ides of March” thing started with Julius Caesar in the year 44 BC. At the time, he was the dictator of Rome and he had many political enemies. Caesar visited a soothsayer and was warned that his life was in danger. In particular, the fortune teller told Caesar to “Beware the Ides Of March.” Caesar was assassinated by a group of Senators on March 15th. It’s a true story. We know all about the incident because of the famous play by Shakespeare.
I’m not a superstitious person. Nonetheless, I keep my eyes wide open on March 15th. I don’t take any chances. People have been worried about March 15th since the year 44 BC. If the superstition has lasted that long, there might be something to it.
I try to maintain a positive outlook on life. In that spirit, here are some positive things that happened on March 15th:
+ 1493: Columbus returned to Spain from his famous voyage.
+ 1729: The first American Nun, Sister Stanislaw Hachard, takes her vows in New Orleans.
+ 1820: Maine admitted as 23rd state.
+ 1906: The Rolls Royce Company is founded.
+ 1913: President Wilson conducted the first presidential press conference.
+ 1923: Lenin suffered his third stroke.
+ 1937: The first American blood bank is opened in Chicago.
+ 1954: Broadcaster Walter Cronkite premieres on CBS.
+ 1962: Wilt Chamberlin becomes first NBA player to score 4,000 points in a single season.
+ 1965: First “TGI Friday’s” restaurant opens in NYC.
+ 1972: The movie “The Godfather” premieres in NYC.
+ 1999: Billy Joel joins the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.
+ 2018: Toys R Us announces that it will file for bankruptcy and close.
The items listed above are proof that good things can happen on March 15th. Don’t spend the day hiding under your bed. Listen to some good Irish music and get an early start on your Saint Patrick’s Day celebration!

Paint time!
I got all my parts from the electrolysis bath out on the pad, wire brushed them down with my drill and a set of wire brushes, as well as my hand wire brush for the tight spots. We had some POR-15 Marine Clean degreaser concentrate left over from previous projects, and I mixed up a solution to help clean off the rust dust. I sprayed them down with the garden hose, let them dry off in the basement and got ready to paint.
This time, I have a pint can of POR-15 rust protective coating in gloss black (I thought about silver but I already had the 6-can sampler of gloss black and this stuff is expensive) and I got to painting. I am being careful to not get too much into the bushing sleeves, but I figure it's not too critical. I am trying hard to keep the paint out of the ball joint conical holes.

Read The RPM Magazine January 2024 Issue - Celebrating 25 Years!
Tumblr media
As we release the January 2024 issue, we also celebrate 25 years of Smoke and Gears with all of our readers, fans, subscribers and advertisers!  Thanks for your support over the years! 100% Street Car...Period!...that also runs 7's in the quarter! Alan Whitaker’s killer 1972 Chevrolet Monte Carlo is a street car through and through, and it’s also the car he dreamed of owning since he was just 11 years old. “I was at a stop light in Whiteland IN. with my father at the age of 11 when a 1970-72 Monte Carlo blue with black vinyl top and rally wheels pulled up. I told my father that was the car I wanted when I’m old enough to drive,” explained Whitaker. UNIQUE...Now here's something you just don't see every day, year...or decade! Almost 2 tons of love! The car measures 17 ½ feet long and from the factory weighed just shy, or just over 4,000 pounds, depending on options. This particular wagon was ordered as a 383 big block, 9-seater with air conditioning. BLACK WIDOW...This multi-purpose 1,800-plus horsepower blown Vette street car is an inspired build. Life can be about focusing on negatives or the positives; Eric Simpson chose the latter. Simpson was once told that he was nothing but a shade tree mechanic and would never have anything worth talking about, "I built this car to prove the naysayers wrong!" This car was literally stock everything and is now completely modified since 2019. SMALL BUT FEROCIOUS...This Grudge racer Gremlin is a small-packaged supersized serving of nitrous'd nasty! By definition, a gremlin is ‘a mischievous folkloric creature invented at the beginning of the 20th century’. American Motors' definition was 'a pal to its friends and an ogre to its enemies,' a definition that Hollywood capitalized on with their movies, depicting the tiny beast as a cute furry little friend (a Mogwai)... TECH INSIDER Welding Exhaust System - Pt. 4 - Flange/Exhaust Port Interface So we are now finally ready to weld. Well, no, not quite. In the past three articles we have discussed various welding techniques, tube fitment and backpurging. As you can see, the key to a proper header build is attention to the details. RPM HIDDEN GEM All of the Above - From the pages of July 2017 - Gary Houghtaling's 1964 Ford Falcon X275 Gary Houghtaling,s twin turbo 1964 Falcon is entirely awesome! Read the full article

Top 5 Java Projects For Beginners
Java is a popular language for developing web and mobile applications. This programming language allows you to write code once, and it runs on all platforms that support Java without needing recompilation.
If you are a beginner in this field, you might want to start with some basic projects that will help you learn the language. These beginner-friendly projects will introduce you to key Java concepts, such as printing, variables, if/else statements, strings, and loops.
Simple Banking Application
If you’re an aspiring programmer looking to start learning Java, a simple banking application is a great way to practice your skills. This project is easy to follow, and it introduces you to many basic Java concepts, such as printing, variables, if/else statements, and strings.
This Java coding tutorial also covers basic concepts like loops, methods, and conditional statements. The program has simple banking operations like deposit, withdraw, check balance, and exit.
A bank account is a vital part of any person’s life. It helps you keep track of your money, and it can also help you save on fees and interest charges.
But traditional banks can be a hassle to use. They often close during specific times of the day, making it difficult to make transactions when you’re in a hurry.
Fortunately, there are software solutions that can do all of the work for you! This particular Java coding tutorial is designed to create a system that can carry out all of the tasks necessary for a bank account without you ever having to step inside a bank.
Pong Game
Pong is a classic two-dimensional sports game where the ball bounces off the four walls and the user tries to keep it from hitting the bottom wall. It was first released in 1972 and has been recreated many times over the years.
The original game uses a paddle to hit the ball and bounce it back off the wall, allowing the player to return it to the paddle. It is possible to add many variations to the basic game, including keeping score, multiple lives, increasing the speed of the ball, sound effects and so on.
This java project for beginners can be modified according to the programmers’ preferences. It can also be played over a network, which makes it ideal for mobile devices.
Snake Game
Snake Game is a classic video game that has been around for decades. It is a two-player arcade game originally developed in 1976 by Gremlin Industries, and later ported to several platforms.
In this game, the player controls a snake. The snake moves along the screen, avoiding walls and its own body.
The game gets harder as the snake gets longer, and the player must keep the snake from colliding with other obstacles or itself. Many versions of Snake have been made, including a variety for Android and iOS.
In this java project for beginners, we will create an instance of a Snake object and use it to move the snake along the screen. We will also set some global properties that can store information about the snake's size and positions, and check if the game is over.
Brick-breaker Game
A Brick-breaker Game is a fun java project where you control a tiny ball on a small platform at the bottom of the screen. The ball can be moved from left to right using the arrow keys on your computer. The goal of the game is to smash as many bricks as possible without hitting the platform with the ball.
The project uses a variety of techniques including Java swing and OOPS concepts. It’s a great choice for beginners to get their feet wet with Java programming.
The Brick-breaker game is a Breakout clone in which the player must deflect a bouncing ball with a paddle to destroy a wall of bricks. The player loses a life if the ball hits the bottom of the screen, and a level is advanced when all of the bricks are destroyed.
