Pontiac Grand Ville
The early 1970s were good times for the Pontiac Motor Division. During the 1960s, the company re-imagined itself, becoming a leader in several car model segments with high annual production. In 1971, Pontiac decided to enter the luxury car segment by introducing a new, top-of-the-line model called the Grand Ville. At that time, the Bonneville was Pontiac’s premium model, and it did the job well. With several body styles available, a nice lineup of engines, and lots of optional extras, the Bonneville sold reasonably well. In fact, it was considered a wise choice in the luxury car field. However, Pontiac wanted something closer to the Cadillac or Oldsmobile than to the Chevrolet Caprice. So they presented the Pontiac Grand Ville using a Bonneville platform and most of the sheet metal, but with a few trim details to differentiate the two models.

The Bonneville stayed in production, but they downgraded it below the Grand Ville. Pontiac decided to offer a 400 HP V8 engine as standard and a 455 HP as an optional engine, as well as a high level of equipment. But for those who wanted something extra, Pontiac offered a leather interior, climate control, and a heavy-duty suspension. They also included an AM/FM radio, and even adjustable brakes and accelerator pedals. They made the Grand Ville in a two or four-door hardtop, as well as a luxury convertible. However, the market didn’t respond all that well, so sales figures were low. At the same time, the energy crisis hit the U.S., so those big gas guzzlers fell out of favor with most customers. They discontinued production of the Grand Ville in 1975. This returned the Bonneville to the top spot in their main model lineup.

2017 Muscle Car & Corvette Nationals Was Truly the Greatest Muscle Car Show on Earth
On May 21, 2017, the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus, the self-proclaimed “Greatest Show on Earth,” ended its 146-year run, citing diminishing crowds and higher costs. Car guys know better. The Greatest Show on Earth just could not compete with MCACN.
The Muscle Car and Corvette Nationals again provided muscle car enthusiasts with a year’s supply of excitement. Bob Ashton, along with the entire MCACN team, continued to astound attendees with new reasons to love the American muscle car.
More than any year prior, it seemed that everyone in the building came armed with their own favorite muscle car stories and experiences. Ashton has consistently made the point that MCACN is ultimately not about the cars, but about the people. We agree but would go a step further to say the whole muscle car hobby is best understood as about people who crave and create stories of automotive adventures that include rescue, research, and restoration.
Aston and company typically cap the MCACN entry list at around 500 cars, yet this year there seemed to be more to experience than in years past. Camaro and Firebird fans feasted on the 50th Anniversary F-Body Invitational, the 1967 Z/28 Invitational, and the Formula Firebird Showcase. The Shaker E-Body Invitational featured some of the finest Mopars in existence. The Kars of Kar Kraft display was a rollout of some of the coolest Fords ever built, including the only surviving 1970 Mercury Cyclone Spoiler II powered by the legendary Boss 429 engine. For those who love to dream, the Barn Finds & Hidden Gems section was possibly the best ever; and if you want to talk about stories, this year’s field of unrestored cars entered for Vintage Certification could speak volumes.

Here we present an overview of the entire MCACN 2017 experience, including capsule write-ups of three cars that most piqued the interest of the MCR staff in attendance. (A fourth car is profiled in Diego Rosenberg’s Bottom End column.)
MCACN should be on any muscle car lover’s must-see list. It’s not too early to be thinking about attending the next one, as we are sure Ashton and his crew are going to pull out all the stops to make the 10th annual MCACN even more memorable than what we have seen so far. MCACN was highlighted this year by a celebration of the 50th anniversary of General Motors’ F-Body cars. Seeing the 1967 Grumpy’s Toy Camaro, currently owned by Dana Mecum, parked next to the 1968 Penske/Donohue Z/28 Sunoco Trans-Am race car was one of those stop-you-in-your-tracks displays that MCACN is known for.
Another show highlight was the Ford Performance Drag Team display, which featured the Georgia Shaker Mustang formerly driven by Hubert Platt and currently owned by Ford restoration expert Bob Perkins.
Official unveilings of newly restored muscle cars adds another layer of excitement to MCACN. Here the wraps are pulled off the original Hard Times 1968 Ram Air I Firebird 400, now owned by Mark Weymouth. The original owner and driver, NHRA Hall of Fame member Truman D. Fields, was at MCACN for the unveiling. The Firebird was meticulously restored to 1973 race season specs by Marquette Classics in Iona, Michigan.
Among the awards handed out at MCACN were Celebrity Picks, favorite cars as chosen by VIPs and other esteemed members of the muscle car community. Bob Ashton let our Muscle Car Review staff act like celebrities and pick cars, too. Arvid’s was this immaculate Marina Blue 1967 Chevelle SS396, powered by its born-with 350hp engine, Muncie M21 close-ratio four-speed, and 3.73 12-bolt Posi rear. On December 8, 1966, Lynn Bower purchased the Chevelle from McEleney Motors in Clinton, Iowa. Bower still owns it today and was present at MCACN to tell the story and give special thanks to Jim Miller and Dennis Sweetwood for the car’s amazing restoration.
Ken Moser is always on hand with one of his latest restorations. This year’s gem from his shop, the Finer Details in Danville, Indiana, was this EV2 TorRed (same as Dodge Hemi Orange) 1971 ’Cuda 440-6 convertible. The ’Cuda, one of 12 like it built, was ordered new by Donald Macormic, who still owns it today. Options include color-keyed grille, rubber bumpers, six-way seat, performance axle package, disc brakes, undercoating, road lamps, Rallye dash, and road lights.
The Class of 1972 Showcase included this 1972 Silver Mist Buick GS 455 Stage 1 car, which previous owner Tom Rix campaigned in NHRA and IHRA Super Stock drag racing. The car has most of its original paint and has been converted to street car status by Dan Vasic. Current owner John Capozzoli retained the competition number and class designation from its drag racing days.
“Have you ever seen fender skirts on a muscle car?” is how Charley Lillard introduced us to his massive Bonneville hardtop, which likely needed every inch of its Tri-power 421 H.O. motor to move the 18 1/2-foot beast. Originally ordered by a bookseller who wanted a work/family car he could also drag race, the four-speed Bonnie came with a long list of options, including transistorized ignition, a remote-opening trunk lid, and an underhood utility lamp.
The Shaker E-Body Invitational included this one-of-one Citron Yella four-speed Hemi Challenger R/T built in 1971. The car is owned by Kevin Kuypers, who brought it down from Canada. Fortunately, the car is equipped with the Dictaphone option for capturing random musings while cruising the boulevard.
Having worked with Mark Sekula and his team at Magnum Restoration in LaSalle, Illinois, we have seen this Sherwood Green 1971 Sport Fury GT go through an extensive restoration. Owner Dave Arent had every reason to be ecstatic as he pulled the wraps off this factory power sunroof C-Body. Special features include a 440 Magnum engine, a 727 TorqueFlite automatic transmission, bucket seats with console, and a 3.23-ratio 8 3/4 differential.
Seen here during Thursday’s setup day is our Nov. 2017 issue’s cover “come to life.” The MCR 1967 Showcase featured Terry Weiner’s GTO, Colin Comer’s Shelby G.T. 500, Bill Wente’s SS396 Chevelle, and Joel Nystrom’s Hemi GTX convertible. Having each owner and members of their family with their cars helped make the weekend a great experience. We even had Chevelle legend Chuck Hansen handing out copies of the magazine to crowds.
Evidence that Ford was ready to push the envelope in NASCAR’s aero wars was on display in the Kars of Kar Kraft exhibit at MCACN. Steve Honnell brought two stillborn FoMoCo aero warriors: the 1970 Mercury Cyclone Spoiler II (the orange car) and Ford Torino King Cobra (the yellow one). Readers with long memories will recall we featured the Super Cobra Jet–powered King Cobra back in the Aug. 2011 issue (“The End”) and the Mercury back in 2006 (“Cyclone Spoiler II”). Both are ultrarare; Ford built just three King Cobras, Mercury two of the Cyclones, though some people dispute that any of the long-nose Mercs got past the clay model stage. Honnell knows different.
Jeff and Joanna Stolowski had Magnum Auto Restoration flawlessly restore this 1971 Oldsmobile 4-4-2 W30 to showroom new. Unique options include air conditioning, an AM/FM radio with eight-track player, and the trailer tow package. Power windows, locks, trunk release, driver’s seat, steering, and brakes rounded out a very luxurious muscle car. Jeff did a great job giving proper tribute to the original owners, Keith and Kathy Maddasion. Kathy, who used to drag race the car, sat behind the wheel as a tribute to her previous racing history with the 4-4-2.
North Cicero Dodge in Chicago, Illinois, is where this 1963 Dodge 330 Max Wedge factory lightweight was purchased. The Dodge was built with aluminum front fenders and hood, and the legendary Max Wedge 13.5:1, 426ci, 425hp engine. Rich Guminski has owned the car for almost 30 years. John Balow at Muscle Car Restorations in Wisconsin completed the restoration about seven years ago. Tony Peterson also played a huge part in getting the car to its current state.
In 1973, Pontiac made 10 four-speed and 33 automatic Super Duty 455 Formula Firebirds. Instead of the familiar Formula twin-snorkel hood, the 1973 Super Duty 455 Formulas received a Trans Am shaker hood. Rick Mahoney’s Florentine Red Super Duty 455 Formula, one of the four-speed cars, has just 16,000 miles on the odometer, retains all of its original metal (resprayed by Scott Tiemann), and still has the drivetrain it was born with.
MASCAR Classics unveiled this 1973 Pontiac Trans Am equipped with the Super Duty 455 engine. Scott Tedro had the MASCAR team take a very nice, unrestored, 10,000-original-mile car and perform a complete nut-and-bolt restoration.
The eBay find of the show was this 1969 R-code Mustang equipped with the 428ci Cobra Jet engine with shaker hood. The Mustang was truly found on eBay and purchased somewhat sight-unseen. The 1-of-25 R-code convertible turned out to be a great restoration candidate, with all the critical factory stampings still intact. The crew at MASCAR performed its magic on the car. In owner Scott Tedro’s words, “It’s a keeper.”
Lou Henderson is the second owner of this Sassy Grass Green 1970 AAR ’Cuda. The car, restored by Joe Mossbichler, has only 18,000 original miles. The 340 Six-Barrel engine, rebuilt by Opel Engineering, is backed by a four-speed transmission and a 3.55 Sure Grip 8 3/4 rear. Options include the Rallye instrument cluster group, black vinyl roof, and fast-ratio power steering.
Kevin Suydam owns this extremely rare and clean 1968 Yenko Camaro (YS8023). Super Car Workshop unveiled the Ermine White with red standard interior beauty, the only 1968 Yenko Camaro built in that color combination. It was sold new at Hood Chevrolet in Liberal, Kansas, and is the one and only Yenko Camaro specifically ordered for drag racing. The drivetrain consists of the 427/450hp engine, M21 four-speed Muncie transmission, and 4.10 12-bolt Posi rear. Super Car Workshop owner Brian Henderson and Suydam were both on hand for the special MCACN reveal.
MCACN brings together some of the greatest muscle car enthusiasts in the country, and this Super Bee story is proof. This 1969 1/2 Dodge A12 440 Six-Pack Super Bee was in the MCACN Barn Finds section in 2014. Owners Dave and Kelly Molnar had the car restored and brought it back to MCACN this year. Excitement and audience approval were overwhelming, allowing many muscle car enthusiasts to celebrate with the Molnars as their muscle car vision successfully became reality.
