Druck New Gen Re-Watch!

Just because Druck has finished with this generation, doesn’t mean you have to move on and forget. With some people wanting to now do a re-watch of the series, particularly of seasons 5 and 6, no better time than to do that as a group.

Starting this Friday the 8th, we’ll be posting on this blog to say what episode we’re watching, along with any relevant social media content, polls and further discussion points! You’ll be able to reminisce, chat with other fans about the episode, and re-live the moments we loved so much from this generation.

Hey, this is about fatous crush on Kieu My.

For me, introducing Fatous feelings for Q that early made it quite obvious that their relationship was going to at least have a bigger role in the series. I mean the 'crushing on a straight girl'-route was still a possibility here, but I'm so glad the writers didn't choose that way.

I wanted to point out something that is not so much related to the question (i hope that's okay). I really liked that they established kieutou from the start (literally, we are in the first ep of the new gen). Instead of 10 weeks relationship development (that most Druck couples have) they have had 20 (even though they were not in focus during Nora's season). Thats why their first interaction in Fatous season was already loaded with tension. And in terms of representation, Druck thereby managed to show a well-developed wlw couple on screen, and i absolutely love that. I kind of ask myself though, why couples were rarely handled like that in the skamverse (meaning either there was a new character, or the love relationship was only told in the main character's season). the only other case of establishing a couple-storyline before their season is Winterberg imo (correct me if I'm wrong here).

Another aspect i like about the very early introduction of the kieutou-storyline is the 'interconnectedness' of the seasons. Season 5 and Season 6 manage to develop their character's stories in a way that they are not 'cut-off' after one season. They pick them up again in season 6. It's a continuous development (not only talking about kieutou here, but also Ava's relationship with the Insta's). and i think here again it shows how well these seasons were written.

I also really like how early they set Fatou and Kieu My up - it allowed the story to feel natural and not hurried like with many other couples, as you said. They set up so many of Fatou's future plots within Nora's season and it made that transition smoother.

It made cheering for Fatou and Kieu My all the more special, since we've been rooting for them for so much longer.

I do think you're right in that Winterberg is the only other couple like this (not counting those couples who get back together by the end).

Seasons 5 and 6 do feel like one joined season sometimes, just with the perspective change. Druck did a great job setting these things up, using Nora's season as the stepping stone while also producing solid storylines for itself.

5x04 discussion q!

i always found how they handled the machwitz sisters to be one of the most compelling and lovely things about nora’s season because of how they show the different ways their mother’s alcoholism affects each sibling.

kiki as the oldest has had to deal with this for the longest, since their mom called nora “kiki” at some point (i haven’t had time to properly watch the eps so i’m not sure if this happens in these ones) and feels a responsibility to her sisters to take on as much of the pain as possible, and finds it hard to leave home because of that.

zoe’s reaction is to avoid it and try to be as distanced from their mother as possible so she doesn’t sleep at home often, and still wants to be able to enjoy herself so she drinks and parties. i don’t think she’s wrong for doing any of that, but we can see how that makes nora feel isolated. kiki and zoe seem to have an unspoken agreement on how they feel about their mother.

and nora, though i think she knows their mother has a problem, has the most hope that she’ll recover. she’s the youngest and may feel like she’s being abandoned by kiki and zoe (subconsciously or not) so she feels like she has to take care of their mother, even if that means buying drinks for her. we get nora’s proper speech about it later in the season, but i just adore the machwitz sisters and how all of this was handled

Sorry for the late reply, I just watched the episode and I totally agree, I was thinking about the same thing!

Each Machwitz sister represents a different way of coping with a situation like that. They deal with it in very different ways, yet you can understand why every one of them acts the way she does. It’s done so masterfully.

Episode 4 is almost painful to watch, but it’s so good. The acting is amazing as well.

5x03 Discussion #1

In episode one, Consti calls Nora a psycho and in this episode, Nora calls Consti crazy. What are you opinions on their former relationship? Do you believe that it was Nora's disassociation that caused the relationship to snap, or do you think Consti had more of a part in it?
