Soulmate Prompts:

Since this is a fic fest about soulmates, we are in need of prompt suggestions! Please send in some prompts that have to do with soulmates! You do NOT have to be writing for this fest to send in prompts!

A: The One au. The One is a tv series that's sort of dystopian in that it explores a reality in which you could suddenly apply to this program that will match you to your soulmate and it follows how specific people deal with that.

B: Where you wake up with a tattoo after meeting your soulmate. Larry are vacationing at the same hotel, they meet and then every day for 4 days after they both gain a new tattoo. When they meet again, they realize their tattoos match perfectly. Rope & anchor, compass & ship, heart & arrow, rose & dagger.

C: Ziall soulmates au where their first words to each other are tattooed somewhere on their body. Both of them have the phrase “fuck you” on their arms. Of course the first time they meet they both say...

D: in uni, prof is giving a lecture, his student is his soulmate, figuring it out over the semester

E: reverse Wellington: Larry meet, drunk Louis shouts "soulmate" at Harry, then they get to know each other and fall in love

F: Larry please- soulmates who meet in dreams and appear the way they see themselves so that irl one doesn’t recognize the other because he sees himself as plain/boring

G: Larry please - One of them either doesn’t want to meet his soulmate and has been doing everything to avoid meeting them. He gets stuck in a time loop (like Groundhog Day) until he meets and acknowledges his soulmate.

H: One of them is a surfer, the other is a photographer and they meet somewhere warm. They're 26 and kinda gave up on finding their soulmate but then it happens.

i: any pairing: universe in which soulmates recognise each other by having the same song stuck in their head. cue person a hearing person b humming the song under their breath in location x

J: Larry please - fic where each year you get opportunities to meet your soulmate and live life with them but as soon as the clock hits 00:00 on Dec 31st your memory resets in regards to who your soulmate is. There’s no way to go around this...or is there?

K: A is a hopeless romantic who has always dreamed of meeting their soulmate. Unfortunately their remote location means they see the same few people every day, none of whom is their match. When Character B arrives and A falls in love with them, the question arises: are they soulmates? Or does A just want them to be?

L: Food is love, and supposedly your soulmate's cooking will taste better than anything you've ever eaten before. Too bad Character A is hopeless in the kitchen. Character B is the chef who promises they can teach anyone how to cook-- is that the only reason A finds their food so delicious? Or is there something more at play?

M: Characters A and B are working together on a yacht. They share a room, and as crew they also happen to share most of their working hours and duties as well. Is that the reason they're so drawn to one another? Regardless of their connection, they're both determined to keep it professional.

N: It's not only humans who have soulmates, apparently. At least if the pet psychic Character A has consulted about their dog's depression is to be believed. The psychic claims the pup met his soulmate at doggie daycare. Now A is trying to see if she's right by seeking out every possible dog from the playgroup. Will helping a dog find it's soulmate lead Character A to the same thing?

O: Hybrids aren't accepted many places, but in a few countries they have full rights and equality, even if prejudice still exists. Character A was raised in an anti-hybrid country and is now studying/working in a hybrid friendly place. Character B is the hybrid neighbor who they feel drawn to in ways they've heard are typical of soulmates. The possibility is as frightening as it is enticing.

P: Nontraditonal ABO: it's generally accepted doctrine that alphas and omegas are made to go together. Character A has always been attracted to people of their own secondary gender, and has therefore run away from the concept of finding a soulmate. When they meet character B, who shares their secondary gender, and find that the two of them share a soulmark-- the sign of a true mate --their world is turned upside down.

Q: (larry) They have been penpals for years now, sharing their little creative thoughts with each other. Will they ever meet? A new job, a different city, some crossed paths and fate might help.

R: Louis is 30 and the CEO of his family business in Toronto and he has hired a new assistant, Harry, 27. A lot of sexual tension, business trips, coincidences and ‘if he my soulmate or I just have a stalker and also a big crush?’

S: Strangers to friends with benefits to lovers larry; Louis and Harry has finished college and they both are doing a tour across Europe visiting different countries. They start from different cities in and meet in the second/third country they’re visiting. They get along quickly and have a one night stand because they think they won’t meet again. But they meet again in the next city or in the trip to the next city. Is their connection due to their sexual attraction or because they’re soulmates?

T: Louis and Harry are both Niall’s friend but they don’t know each other, however they meet in Niall’s wedding (with his soulmate) in Ireland (or another country if the author prefer another place for the wedding)

U: Larry: Soulmates have a special connection, they have visions of their more important events of their life - both sad and happy but they can’t see their faces, bodies or their friends/families faces. Louis and Harry know everything important that happen to them but they haven’t met yet, they live in different countries and they know that but they don’t know the country they live in. How will they meet? What will happen?

V: Larry: Exes to lovers - People have their soulmates mark in their 18 birthday. Harry and Louis were together during high school and break up before Louis 18 birthday because person A was afraid of not being their soulmates. Louis goes to travel aboard so they don’t know about their mark. They meet again some years later when they’re in their 20...

W: Larry enemies to lovers: Both of them work for the same company and has the same job position but they hate each other because the first time they met it wasn’t “meet cute”. All their coworkers think they are similar and would make an amazing couple so they try to get them together. Most people don’t believe in soulmates anymore, they think it was a legend or maybe it’s not a legend and they’re soulmates?

X: Untraditional soulmates !! For example, a pairing (or poly) comprised of people who aren’t soulmates but are in love anyway. Maybe their “true” soulmates died or just didn’t work out for some reason. Maybe their “true” soulmates are platonic and separate from the romantic relationship. But ultimately the theme being something like “i am choosing to love this person” rather than the world telling them who to love :)

Y: Character A is a writer who pours their heart and soul into everything they write, though their focus on the soulmate trope is underappreciated. They go away on a writer's retreat to give it one last try and meet Character B, a person who seems to have stepped right out of one of their novels. Is this their soulmate or a figment of their imagination, or have they truly had one of their characters come to life?

Z: In a world where you see in color after hearing the sound of your soulmate's voice, Character A doesn't remember seeing in black and white. When they realize they're different, nobody can explain the reason. It isn't until they meet Character B, a stranger with the same affliction, that they begin to put things together. Or: A and B hear one another's cries as babies, changing their vision from black and white to color before they could possibly have realized it.

AA: Characters A & B somehow keep running into each other inexplicably all over the world. Maybe they happen to study abroad together then have a work conference in the same city then vacation in the same city, etc. Eventually they realize they've been seeing each other all over and maybe the universe is trying to tell them something.

BB: Louis gets a call from an unknown number from across the world. When he answers it, he's asked if he is a Mr. Harry Styles' previous employer and to give a recommendation on his performance. Amused, he pretends he is Harry's old boss and gives a glowing recommendation without knowing who he is. The job that this Harry is going for must be quite intense, because a few days later Louis is asked to fly out to interview in person to attest to Harry's character, where he ends up meeting Harry and falling for him.

CC: OT4/5 platonic soulmates with all the main characters being aro, ace, demisexual, etc. A soulmark appears when you meet a soulmate-- whether they're a platonic, romantic, or sexual soulmate(or sooner combo of the 3) is something each person has to discover for themselves. OT4/5 are grateful to find soulmates who are excited to experience beautiful and deep platonic relationships.

DD: Soulmarks are a trait that most humans have lost. Character A is a vampire who was born in a time when they were far more common. Imagine their surprise when they meet Character B, a human, whose soulmark complements their own.

EE: Larry: An AU where magic exists, Louis has always thought he’s a dark wizard and Harry doesn’t know if he’s a wizard or a normal human. Spoiler: he’s a wizard! They meet when they are 18/20 in a trip and they find more than themselves.

FF: Larry: Louis and Harry are friends of Zayn and Liam but they haven’t met yet. Ziam is having a wedding and their bachelor parties in Hawaii, they meet them.

GG: Louis and Harry haven’t met yet but they meet in a reality show that consists of traveling around the world. The rules of the reality show: Choose a person in the first program to travel with them (Louis and Harry travel together) and spend as little money as possible.

HH: Louis and Harry have been working in the same building for years but they haven’t met officially although they’ve seen each other around. They officially meet when their boss decided to do a work trip to Sydney

ii: Louis and Harry go to Orlando to visit the amusement park. They meet when they’re waiting in the queue for one of the rides and they spend a lot of time together because their other friends are tired of visiting different amusement park and they want to chill.

JJ: Famous/Non-famous larry: “Every time that you and your soulmate are in the same city, you’ll have a mark in your wrist. If one of you leave, the mark disappears” Person A is an actor who loves love but is tiring of two things: fake pr-relationships that make the general public believes that he’s not interest in having a soulmate and traveling. Person B wants to find his soulmate but he knows it’s not in his city so he’s traveling around. They have been in the same place several times but they haven’t met. How many countries will they visit until they meet?

KK: larry please: It is well known that the first time soulmates touch they leave a vivid mark on their partner's skin. Well one morning Louis wakes up with a bright stripe across his cheekbone and no idea what happened.

LL: hl au: harry is a well-known anthropologist from england but he’s requested to join the discovery of an ancient palace in mexico city. louis is a historian that has lived in said city for several years now, so he’s almost a local. the discovery they both take part of includes a blue greeny jewel that holds a legend about soulmates.

MM: Zouiam ot3 matching soulmate tattoos

NN: A and B are childhood friends and have known they're soulmates since they got their marks in their early teen years but they never develop romantic feelings for each other but they Do want to spend the rest of their life together. Bit of conflict / comfort.

OO: Lirry Shrek au. Harry Fiona has always expected their perfect soulmate to break their curse. Liam Shrek is tired of playing the role of the ogre and being rejected by prejuices. They meet.

PP: Zayn is travelling with his van, he picks up some hitchhikers along the way. They stargaze and bond with each other. They find out they are soulmates when some dangerous situation arises.

QQ: ot5 1d era au. A slowly finds out they are soulmates with each of the others while in the bus or travelling/staying abroad together.

RR: Ziam: In a world where magic exists but soulmates are rare, Liam and Ziam met in the same Magical College and have an instant connection. In history of magic, they learn about soulmates and Character A know that they (Ziam) are soulmates but he’s afraid and tries to avoid Character B all the time.

SS: Larry - Louis needs a break of his job and travels to a place where Harry lives and Harry needs a break of his past relationships. They meet in a pub and after too many drinks, they decide to do a road trip around the country. The author decides how people know who is their soulmates.

TT: Zouis: they discover they’re soulmates in Zayn’s wedding. Louis is the boyfriend of one of the best mates

UU: Larry - A reality show is trying to prove that soulmates still exist and Louis and Harry are participants in it

VV: HL Monday AU with Harry as Mickey and Louis as Chloe (but with a happy and not toxic ending please!)

WW: The voice you hear your thoughts in is your soulmate’s but you don’t know who they are until you hear them speak for the first time

XX: You’ve been sketching your soulmate’s face since you were old enough to pick up a pencil, the drawings become more realistic through the years as the day you meet comes near

YY: Red strings of fate au. Person A cuts their string. Person B is devastated to find their string has been cut but moves on with their life and finds love with, you guessed it, Person A who doesn’t believe in soulmates. When Person B finds out that Person A cut their string they’re so angry because they know how devastated they were to find their cut string. And Person A is confused at first because they thought Person B didn’t believe in soulmates either and didn’t realize that it was because they had no way of finding their soulmate. And then it hits Person A that there might be a slight chance that Person B IS their soulmate. So they nervously show up with their string and ask if Person A wants to see if the ends fuse together or not. Up to writer if the ends fuse or not.

ZZ: Person A reads tarot cards and while reading Person B’s cards, Person A can see that the cards are telling them that the two of them are soul mates

AAA: Soulmates can hear what their soulmate is singing. Harry grows up with a soulmate who exclusively sings a weird blend of Oasis, Green Day, and the odd Light Killers song. Louis grows up with a soulmate who mostly sings Fleetwood Mac and Peter Gabriel. They both hate their soulmates taste in music.

BBB: Every person is born with a golden string on their finger attached to their soulmate. Everyone but them can see it but it is considered highly rude to tell people without prompting (like taking away a coming of age experience). Or Harry and Louis fight a lot and everyone looks at them knowingly until one of them cracks and asks someone about it.

CCC: Character A runs a clothing boutique of some kind and one day uses a steamer too close to the smoke detector and sets off the fire alarm. Character B is one of the firemen to respond. Character A is very embarrassed that they did this in front of a super hot fireman, but the firemen are super nice about it. It just so happens they have to come back the following week for an annual inspection of the building and Character A jokes around/flirts with B. Soulmate aspect up to writer. (One idea could be matching soul marks?)

DDD: When soulmates touch for the first time, an electric shock goes through each person. They can’t touch each other without a shock...until they fall in love with each other. Too bad Character A & B hate each other and are not thrilled that when they touch by accident they finally feel the electricity they’ve always been waiting for.

EEE: The color of your eyes act like a mood ring and changes according to your soulmates' mood. The first time you make eye contact with your soulmate, they turn the same color.

FFF: Reluctant soulmates where one or both of them keep their soulmarks covered at all times because they want to fall in love without the person soulmates

GGG: AU where your soulmate smells like HOME only they’re both too dirty and disgusting to smell like anything other than yuck

HHH: Older Larry AU where they’re both in their 40s or older and still haven’t met The One. Embracing this, they each go on a trip alone, but wind up meeting

iii: Fleetwood Mac/ Rumours AU - Larry as Stevie and Lindsey, Ziam as Christine and John. A breakup and a divorce while recording and touring an iconic album. Endgame Larry. Lovers to exes to soulmates.

Landon was looking for answers, wondering why he felt like nothing in his life changed. It felt like the most important piece of his life was missing. Being immortal, it didn't take the Kirby boy long to realize that being immortal usually meant being alone, and being alone was somewhat hopeless.

Josie and Lizzie were spending the summer apart. Lizzie was with Caroline, both of the Gemini twins having questions about the merge and the Ascendant, something that they had made with their Aunt Bonnie when they were five. The twins talked very astral projection, but it wasn't the same. With MG and Kaleb gone with Kaleb's family, Penelope in Belgium, and Rafael stuck in wolf form, Josie almost felt alone in the house she called her home. She thought maybe she'd have Landon, but he had been keeping to himself.

She did have Alaric, though, who was no longer the headmaster of the Salvatore Boading School.

Landon tried to spend as much time as he could with Rafael though, try to make things normal for them. No one knew how Rafael got stuck in his wolf form even when it wasn't a full moon. Josie might've wanted to go to Europe to be with her sister and their mother, but she didn't want to leave Alaric alone.

"Any updates on who the hell Mystery Supergirl is?" Lizzie asked, sitting on Josie's bed through their astral projection.

Both twins looked the picture frame on one of their drawers, a girl with dark brown hair smiling in the middle of the two girls at a bonfire. Pictures of her were everywhere, it seemed. MG had one with her hanging on his wall in his dorm room, Landon had found polaroids of himself with her or her with Rafael in their room. There was even a bedroom left empty, everyone suspecting that it was her room. They all thought that perhaps she was the one who fell in the hole that closed it, which would make sense. Anyone and everyone who went through the Malivore pit got forgotten.

Lizzie has thus dubbed her "Mystery Supergirl," even though they knew her name. Her school files that Dorian found said that her name was Lilah Desmarais, that she was a vampire with no family. When Landon was found at the Malivore pit, he was considered a hero. When the girl's photos and belongings were found at the school, they all had decided that whoever this Lilah had been, she had jumped into the pit, which created everyone's forgotten memories of her.

"Other than her name and her bedroom, she's just gone, Lizzie. Whoever she was, she helped Landon destroy the Malivore pit, probably falling into it in the process," Josie shrugged.

"Lilah was really pretty," Lizzie said, frowning as she looked at the frame.

Josie nodded and picked it up, bringing it back to the bed as they stared at the photo of them.

"She looks happy in this picture," Josie stated. "She must've been a really good friend if she was willing to be forgotten just to protect us, Landon, and the school."

Outside of the school, Landon ran into Alaric as he held a tray of various raw meats, on his way to feed Rafael.

"Dr. Saltzman, long time no see," Landon smiled at the old headmaster.

"I see Raf is eating better than I am," Alaric joked.

"Yeah, well, you get stuck in permanent wolf form, and you, too, can hit the all-you-can-eat meat buffet," joked Landon right back.

"Yeah. Any luck finding a spell to turn him back?"

"I'm working on it. Any luck figuring out why I can't remember destroying the Malivore pit with Mystery Supergirl, or who she might've been? Maybe Roman's found anything out?"

"I'm working on it. And Caroline thought it was best Roman took a break for now, with it being summer and the change of headmasters. He's currently on vacation," he said, and Landon nodded. "Everything else good?"

"Totally," Landon lied, shaking his head as he spoke. He held up the tray of meats and said, "Here's to success."

B E L G I U M

Penelope Park frowned down at the photo she found in her box of things that reminded her of Josie. It was a polaroid, taking selfie style of her, Josie, that boy that recruited students for the Salvatore School, and a long haired brunette she didn't remember.

Her parents didn't like it when she had contact with people back at the school, thinking it would prevent her from moving on and starting a new life. She missed Josie.

She stared at the photo, confused why she didn't remember that day. The four of them were sitting at one of the outdoor seats at the Mystic Grill, looking like they were on a double date. It made absolutely no sense that she didn't remember her or even remember hanging out with Roman Sienna.

Penelope did remember the Malivore pit drama that she had been around to see. She frowned when she realized there was a person in her life she would probably never remember, likely having gone into the pit.

She shook her head, putting the Polaroid down to look at the rest of her Josie memorabilia, wondering if the brunette Saltzman girl would ever finally be happy.

N E W · O R L E A N S

"You must think think I'm crazy."

Lilah sat on the countertop of Roman's kitchen counters, sipping on the blood bag he had given her. He was standing by the archway to his kitchen, leaning against the wall with his arms crossed as he stared at her.

"You? Crazy?" he asked sarcastically, but he shook his head, stepping in closer to her. "I don't really know what to think of you, Desmarais."

"So you don't think I'm crazy?" she asked as he came in front of her, standing in between her legs, so close to her.

"Oh no," he chuckled. "I definitely think you're crazy."

He sent her his killer smile and she shoved his shoulder away, the boy backing up a bit as they both laughed. He placed his hands on the counter behind him, leaning against it instead as he stared at the girl across from him, who was kicking her legs back and forth as she drank from the blood bag. He wasn't too sure how to read her.

One minute, she was this badass girl who was on the Mikaelson's good side, stories of her fighting alongside them to protect the city were still spoken amongst the supernatural in the quarter, she's this girl who can rescue him from being held captive.

The next minute, she seems like just a teenager, wandering the world confused and somewhat broken. Roman knew a mental breakdown when he saw one, and apart from the forgetting moments and trying to jog her memory, he wondered what it was that got suppressed so far down that she's trying so hard to remember.

"So, why do you think I'm the key to why you woke up near Mystic Falls?" Roman inquired, curious about her proclamation.

She put the blood bag down on the counter after she had sucked it dry, wiping her lips.

"I keep remembering things whenever you're around," she confessed. "Like... moments that I forgot or something."

"But why would I help you remember? We just met a few weeks ago."

"I don't know," Lilah shrugged. "I just know that when I'm around you, or if I touch things you have, I have the most eerie feeling of deja vu, which I also have when I—"

She cut herself short. She had deja vu whenever she touched something that belonged to Elijah, her father.

"When what?" Roman asked, stepping closer to her again, placing his hands on her waist to get her to stop fidgeting.

"Whenever I touch something that was my father's," she muttered.

"Your dad's alive?" he asked.

She shook her head no. As she sat there, she wondered if her secret was a piece to figuring out the puzzle. What if the big forgotten mystery had something to do with the Mikaelson family. Lorelle comes back right when Lilah starts to feel like she was in some morphed version of reality, right when everyone can't recall the girl in the photos with the Mikaelsons.

"How could I not realize it before?" she whispered.

"Realize what?"

She pushed Roman away, getting off of his counter. She put her shoes back on, looking at the confused blond who was following after her.

"I don't think you're the answer. I think I'm the answer," she said.

Of course she was. She was a Mikaelson, everything always linked back to them. The first vampire family, the ones that couldn't be killed. But she was truly the one who couldn't be killed. Not white oak, not Marcel's venom, not any magic in the world. The answer had to lie within the Mikaelson family.

She opened his door, planning on rushing out to her family, but he shut the door, grabbing her wrist.

"What are you talking about?" he asked, wanting her to stop and breath for a second.

She looked at him, swallowing and clearing her throat before she was able to say, "I'm a Mikaelson. I'm the answer."

He looked at her peculiarly, a flash of fear running through his face at her statement. "W-what do you mean you're a Mikaelson?"

"You're not the only one who can lie about their identity, Roman. I have to go," she said.

DISCUSSION BOARD

· so we get a small glimpse into life at the salvatore school sans lilah! remember, when hope jumped into the pit, she asked alaric to burn any evidence that hope was ever alive. hope wouldn't have been able to guess that lilah's entire timeline/life gets uprooted back to new orleans in the absence of her, so she never asked alaric to get rid of them. much like the photos of hope everywhere in new orleans, there's going to be some of lilah at the school.

· we also see a lot of lilah's similarities to landon. in aftermath, they had been developing a friendship that was soon blotched at Miss Mystic falls for a short while, lilah and landon never actually talked about the things he had said about roman that upset her, then ofc he got kidnapped, and then ofc this all happened.

· i also made it so that Lilah's school files never got changed after she came clean about who she was two years prior, partly because, as a 1000+ old vampire, she never had real legal documents. She had fake ones made when Hayley enrolled her and Hope into the Salvatore School, in which she never went to fix.

· also the parallel between everyone in Mystic Falls dubbing Lilah "Mystery Supergirl" based on her phhotos Roman being "Mystery Blond" and Hope being the mysterious girl in the photos.

· i also loved Penelope, so showing her in Belgium was so fun! i might have her come back, who knows? i love changing julie plec's storyline BAHA

E - Easiest person to talk to: Probably my mom

F - Favorite song: Umm at the moment I’m gonna say Judy Garland singing “Mr. Monotony”. It’s an underrated gem.

G - Grossest Memory: I have two: First, I threw up in a hotel pool. Second, I threw up in a school trip. The first happened because I had swallowed some water and choked on it. The second was in grade six. I had just gotten my period and I think my eleven-year-old self wasn’t able to cope so I got sick to my stomach and vomited in the entrance to the place we were staying. Some kid’s mom had to drive me back to Montreal.

H - Horror yes or horror no: Generally, no.

I - In love?: Nope!

J -Jealous of people?: Now and then

L - Love at first sight or should I walk by again?: I think I can be attracted to someone at first sight but I don’t see myself being in love without knowing the person better.

M - Middle name: Esperanza. My mom picked it because it means hope and Lucie means light so they kinda go together.

O - One wish: To stop freaking out over my grades and realize I’m actually doing fine.

B-Biggest fear: Well, there’s a lot of stuff I’m anxious about, but if we’re talking straight up fears or phobias...bees (or bee-like insects...or anything that makes a loud buzzing sound) and their hives/nests, mushrooms, deep water/oceans, and the unknown in general.

...Yes, I said mushrooms. They’re just...guh. They look...I mean they’re really just...yuck. Especially the ones with the long stalks or the spherical ones. Mold, as well. Any fungus, really. I don’t like it. It’s too...alien, I suppose.

C-Current time: 1:55 am

D-Drink you last had: Coffee. Obviously.

E-Every day starts with: 20 to 30 sit-ups, a trip to the bathroom, and breakfast (typically either a bagel or yogurt) while catching up on whatever I missed on social media while I was asleep.

F-Favorite song: No idea. Too many I like. I’ve been listening to a lot of Arlo Guthrie recently. Alice’s Restaurant and City of New Orleans and the like.

G-Ghosts are they real: I don’t think so. Not enough evidence to support their existence. They are a cool concept, though, I’ll give ‘em that.

K-Killed someone: I have never and would like to never do so. Unless someone hurts a friend or family member. In that case, I am not responsible for my own actions.

L-Last time you cried: A week ago, maybe? Can’t remember why, but I do remember being a bit upset at...something?

M-Middle name: Ellis. It was my late great-grandmother’s first name. I feel honored to be named after such an amazing woman.

N-Number of siblings: Zero.

O-One wish: For things to go well for everyone. Whatever those things happen to be.

P-Person you last called/texted: Probably my dad. Probably about groceries. Probably about out dwindling supply of coffee.

Q-Questions you are always asked: Nothing, really. I don’t go out enough to have people ask me too many questions. Just how I like it (at least in the real world. I love being asked questions here, just FYI). If anything, my parents ask me how my day was just about every other day. My day was fine. As always. Boring usually, but fine.

T-Time you woke up: ...uh, I can’t quite remember. Around noon, I think?

U-Underwear color: Grey. I’m a bit boring as far as my underwear selection is concerned. Not like anyone is going to see it, right?

V-Vacation destination: Maybe the Adirondacks. They’re nice in the summer. I’d love to go to Europe someday, too. Not sure where exactly. Somewhere nice, not too hot, hopefully with a lot of history museums. Also somewhere with good bakeries.

W-Worst habit: Pacing. I have worn an actual rut in the carpet in my house from my pacing. At least I’m getting exercise, but my feet do get really tired after a while.

X-X-Rays you’ve had: Just x-rays for my teeth. My last one I got done just before I got my wisdom teeth out. That was a...fun weekend. The Vicodin I got for the pain knocked me on my ass, though. I did nothing but sleep for two whole days.

Y-Your favorite food: Either baked ziti or pizza. Unless we’re talking about sweets, in which case it’d be apple pie.

Z-Zodiac sign: Cancer, the crab.

Living abroad during a global health crisis can create concerns about whether coming back home is the best option.

For many Canadians who’ve spent years away, returning to North America amid the coronavirus outbreak may not be ideal, or even possible.

“I am not expecting Canada to fly people out anytime soon,” said Jason So, a Torontonian who has lived in Seoul, South Korea, for more than eight years.

“I am more worried about flights being blocked for us to leave commercially or the costs associated with self-isolation for two weeks when — and if— I return to Canada,” he explained.

Coming back to Canadian soil could risk his family’s health, and he doesn’t have a place to return to, said So, 34.

South Korea is one of the countries most impacted by the spread of the coronavirus (referred to officially as COVID-19), with more than 6,000 cases reported.

Canadian Leora Courtney-Wolfman lives in Vienna, Austria, where there are currently 55 confirmed cases of the coronavirus. But what might be more concerning is the tiny European country borders Italy, where around 4,000 people have been infected and nearly 200 have died.

“With being near Italy, the Viennese are kind of famous for being blase, very indifferent and not making a big deal about things,” said Courtney-Wolfman, 35.

“There’s no reason to come home. I’ve been following the story in Toronto out of interest … It seems they’ve developed a response plan after SARS that’s doing well,” she said.

“We will have to see what happens in Vienna. It’s a great city to live in, but there’s a lot more people in all of Europe in a much smaller space than Canada.”

One positive about living in Austria, as opposed to Canada, is that the work culture has always encouraged employees to stay home if they are sick, she said.

“If you have a mild headache or cough, you’re not going to come into work for a few days … there’s no pressure,” she said.

“People are less worried because if you’re sick, you don’t see anyone until you’re better. A lot of Canadian cities, you feel guilted into coming into work,” she explained.

Travel plans haven’t changed

In Germany, there are 349 reported cases of the new coronavirus, which was a steady increase from less than 250 in early March.

Kevin Caners, originally from Brockville, Ont., has called Berlin home six years and says the extent of the coronavirus impact is starting to feel more omnipresent.

“It depends a lot on your particular community. The general [mood] is a little on edge or expectant, there’s definitely been shortages all over the city,” he said. Products like pasta, rice and flour have been sold out across Berlin, he explained.

Caners says he and his girlfriend just bought tickets to come home to Canada for a short visit this June. Those travel plans were on his agenda before the virus, he explained.

“I’m personally dreaming, hoping, expecting that it will eventually blow over. I have no actual idea, but I have a hunch eventually it will blow over,” he said.

“I’m 34, so I’m not in the high at-risk community or demographic, so that plays into it. If I was older or had health complications, I’d be much more concerned.”

‘Everyone is working together’

After living in South Korea for nearly two years, Evan Przesiecki says he’s not overly concerned about his safety in the country.

He teaches English in Seoul, South Korea, and has returned to Canada once in 2018 for the Christmas holidays.

The government is taking the necessary precautions and public schools across South Korea have closed to encourage teachers and students to stay at home,” he said.

“Above this, workers like myself are still being paid during this unexpected time off, so financially things are sound too.”

Even though South Korea has faced other outbreaks like SARS and H1N1, like many other countries, the current scenario seems unprecedented, he said.

“People are avoiding mass gatherings, like going to the movies … it’s a shame. Right now is usually a great time for tourism,” he said.

“But now everyone is working together to ensure that we control this situation as quickly as possible.”

Friends and family in Canada have asked Przesiecki if he’s nervous about the virus since the first cases were reported in Wuhan, he said. But the Korean government’s response has made him feel fairly comfortable where he is, he explained.

“I worked very hard to get my job here in Seoul, and I do have my life here at the moment. Korea has been so welcoming and good to me,” he said.

“It’s hard to just say I’ll drop a place I very much considered home at the moment when there are so many uncertainties.”

Living in Seoul as opposed to Daegu — the centre of Korea’s outbreak — has given Przesiecki some distance from the majority of those infected, he said.

Hi The Wise Explorer! Thanks so much for having me!

I’m Juliey Pham, from Vietnam. I’m currently working and living in the UK.

Funnily enough, when I was small I never realized how big my passion for traveling could be – I’d always been on family summer vacations but that was it. It was not until when I moved to Oxford, UK that I started to have little wanders around the beautiful town and eventually discovered my hidden thing for traveling and travel photography.

Today you are going to share your recent trip to Lille, France. How did you decide on this location?

This summer I did a Eurotrip, which included Paris. Having 2 full days in Paris, I decided to spend the first day in Paris (as I’d been to Paris before) and go on a one-day trip to a nearby city the next day. After doing some online research, I chose Lille, “the capital of the North of France”.

How did you travel to the location? Is there/how is the transportation there? Did you use an agency, a guide or you did it all yourself?

I took a train from Gare du Nord (Paris) to Lille-Europe (Lille). The trip took just over 1 hour. There’re Metro lines and buses in Lille, however, I used neither of them because I often explore places on foot.

I hardly ever seek help from a travel agency, my wanderlust leads me to explore things by myself, although I did use TripAdvisor for some attraction recommendations.

How was the language barrier?

It was not a problem at all! The people I met in Lille were very friendly and could communicate in basic English.

Was the trip mostly sightseeing, or you enjoyed activities and shows as well?

My trip to Lille mainly involved wandering, enjoying and photo-taking. Though I only had one day, I gave myself enough time to chill and really “take everything in” as I was walking around the city.

What surprised you there in a good way? Any strange/unpleasant experience?

This is the most interesting part!

I took the earliest train from Paris and arrived in Lille at about 8am. At first, I was very excited and proud of my decision to go early – I believed the earlier I got there, the better chance I’d have to take beautiful and “clean” photos, because other visitors would still be in bed or having breakfast and won’t get in my frame (which often happens a lot if I go out at 12pm or later in the afternoon).

One thing I never expected was that in early mornings, shops and restaurants were not yet open, and the city center was full of cargo trucks delivering food and products to the stores, which made the whole scene, especially the two famous squares: La Grand Place and Place du Théâtre, look quite messy. Although no one got in my frame, instead I had big and not-so-attractive vans running around!

Vieux-Lille also couldn’t win me at that point as all shops were still closed. Therefore I couldn’t really enjoy “the quaint streets with pretty cafés and vintage shops” as reviewed on TripAdvisor and other travel sites, although the quiet streets in the early morning were pretty charming in a way.

So during the first 2-3 hours, I admit I was quite disappointed at the city.

Then at about 11am, the sun started to shine, restaurants were open and I immediately felt regretful for judging Lille too quickly. It was sunny for the whole day, I had so much fun visiting a lot of pretty areas in the city and took many photos. Everywhere I went, Lille kept filling me with awe. I eventually had one of the best one-day trips I had ever had!

What was your favorite sight/thing in Lille?

Definitely Vieux-Lille!

Why should people visit it? Any other attraction recommendations?

Vieux-Lille (Old Lille) is a pretty neighborhood, with loads of cafés and shops that give you a warm vintage feel.

If you come here in an early morning, you may find the streets really really quiet, but this is definitely a photo op. Then when the streets get a little busier, the neighborhood becomes livelier and even more appealing.

Place du Théâtre and La Grand Place are also very beautiful under the sunlight (without the trucks and all).

Another place I’d highly suggest is La Ville Bourse right at La Grand Place, which has all sorts of little old French things like stamps, postcards, newspapers, books, accessories… Absolutely a must-visit!

Any tips for future visitors? Anything you would have loved to know/ be prepared for before arriving?

Exploring Lille early in the morning can be an advantage because you’ll save a lot of time and be able to see how a place transitions from quiet to busy at different times of the day.

However, be prepared that if you arrive too early in the morning (before 10am-ish), you might find the city a bit disorganized (from my personal experience). But soon I hope you’ll fall in love with Lille just like I did!

Do you have a bucket list? What are some things/places on it?

Yes, definitely.

Traveling-wise, as I’m back in my hometown – Hanoi, Vietnam for the summer, I plan to explore the city as much as I can. Hanoi is very beautiful and historic and I want to do more photography to show you my home city. There’s also Santorini, I’ve been there but I really want to return soon, it’s a magical place! Paris has got to be on the wishlist as well – it’s very close to London and I could literally go there every weekend.

I’m working as an intern in the Education UK Promotion Team at the British Council Vietnam this summer. My goal is to slay this internship haha.

What is your next adventure? Anything planned yet?

I’ll be quite busy with work this summer so no vacations have been planned yet. I do hope I can go on a break though, probably to a beach in Vietnam. Vietnam has a beautiful coastline and I can’t wait to feel the ocean breeze, the chilly water, the salt and the sand.
