pinky and the brain - s1e6: brainania
Tumblr media
i’m running on like the barest dregs of energy let’s fucking do this leeroy jenkins
episode summary: brain needs to build a Very Big Tumbly Drier. he needs a lot of money to build a Very Big Tumbly Drier. he decides the best way to do this is to.... invent a country and scam the us out of a foreign aid cheque.
hm.
the rundown:
it’s acme labs!
Tumblr media
there it is.
as we zoom in a little, we hear pinky laughing maniacally at the very mention of tom ruegger, while a couple of women are dead on the floor.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
hm.
SPEAK TO ME, PHYLLIS, SPEAK. as it turns out, things aren’t quite as dire as previously thought, as pinky affirms that brain looks “simply fetching.”
Tumblr media
narf.
Tumblr media
“these are the only garments i could obtain. and besides, you are no helen of troy yourself.”
ignoring the fact that he chose to wear the hat and the gloves as well, brain moves onto explaining his latest plan--
Tumblr media Tumblr media
but not before giving pinky a static-y poke for his crimes.
Tumblr media
“to generate global static cling, we shall construct a massive clothes dryer.”
Tumblr media
BEHOLD.
Tumblr media
THE TITANOCYCLE FOUR THOUSAND, WITH THREE SPEEDS AND AUTOMATIC WRINKLEGUARD. this will surely allow brain to.... trap everyone in their clothes via static cling and. uh. allow him to seize power...... somehow......... by putting everyone in a really big tumbledryer?????
Tumblr media
it costs fourteen billion dollars.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
“oh, i have it!”
Tumblr media
“we build a huge tooth, leave it under a huge pillow, and then fairies will leave us lots of money!”
Tumblr media
brain tells pinky to stop eating paint chips. it’s a well deserved response to pinky’s insane, bullshit idea, not nearly as dignified and scientific as Everyone Goes In The Big Tumbly Dryer By Brain Age Two And A Half.
Tumblr media
as he heads off to ponder an Equally Sensible idea to get a lot of money, pinky assures brain that he will not “be a bother.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
“brain.”
Tumblr media
“if i ate a hundred jelly rolls, would i explode?”
Tumblr media
i don’t know why pinky is sticking his ass out. maybe that’s where the jelly rolls go, in the sense that whenever i used to eat cakes around my dad he’d often say something like “a minute on the lips is a lifetime on the hips”. (also? pinky is british, so what he actually means is jelly rolls, and that sounds disgusting.)
so anyway brain gives him a piece of paper and tells him to try origami.
Tumblr media
BUT WAIT.
Tumblr media
“pinky! are you pondering what i’m pondering?” “i think so brain, but why the bitch stacey foreign aid office is giving chad all the money while i’ve always been a nice guy and showed her a basic level of human respect is beyond me. narf.”
no i’m sorry. he didn’t say that. pinky respects women. also apologies to the residents of the actual country of chad. big ups to all of you. lol. (he actually says “but pantyhose are so uncomfortable in the summertime”, which is wild, considering this episode was aired in november.)
Tumblr media
brain doesn’t want to wear the pantyhose.
well, maybe he does, but not right now. instead, he suggests that they form a bogus nation and demand reparations from the united states, which is, of course, easier, saner, and far less work than Really Big Tooth. as he folds the Chad Newspaper into a vague key shape (the Virgin Tabloid never had a chance) pinky points out that, uh
Tumblr media
you can’t just invent a country, brain. “won’t people know we’re not a real country?”
Tumblr media
“the average american’s grasp of geography is pitiful. they’ll think we’re part of the former soviet union.”
Tumblr media
“or canada.”
Tumblr media
so they pick a random, tiny island on the label of a Science Chemical and set off on the boat to Being A Coloniser Town.
Tumblr media
a long sea voyage awaits us! and at the end, we shall found a nation! and that nation shall be called!
Tumblr media
BRAINANIA.
Tumblr media
“can’t we call it pinkyland? or eric?”
“don’t vex me, pinky, or i shall turn on you.”
Tumblr media
so they get on the S.S FATTY LUMPKIN and bugger off to Island X.
Tumblr media
“i haven’t seen anybody yet, brain. i guess we’re alone here.”
“excellent, pinky. it’s time to flesh out the terrain.”
Tumblr media
“that volcano will be mount brain.”*
Tumblr media
“this clearing will be brain flats,”
Tumblr media
“and that water over there--”
Tumblr media
“very well.”
Tumblr media
“the fjord of pinky.”
Tumblr media
and they hoist their adorable, homemade flag, while pinky doots them a little themetune.
(*perhaps when they’re not in the middle of the jungle.)
Tumblr media
how lovely!
Tumblr media
less lovely.
Tumblr media
significantly less lovely. still, it got brain to make the little O:O face, so it’s not all bad.
Tumblr media
as the mice are scooped up onto a sphere and presented in front of this presumably-maori gentleman, brain decides to put his White Gay From Los Angeles skills to the test, and reassures pinky that he will communicate with them in the Primitive Argot Of The South Seas.
Tumblr media
ME NUMBER ONE FELLA. OTHER FELLA NUMBER TEN. CATCHY ALL SAME SAME. YOU SAVVY?
Tumblr media
“good day, mate. d’you speak english?”
hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.
anyway apparently this has happened often enough that these guys learnt english. from all the times it happened. and then they ate the guy they learnt english from and shrunk his head, but to be honest, i don’t blame them.
Tumblr media
this is alan. “hello, alan.” says pinky.
Tumblr media
“i would be pinky! and this is prime minister brain.”
Tumblr media
“who is IN CHARGE OF THIS ISLAND AND EVERYTHING YOU SEEEE.”
Tumblr media
“narf.”
sneaky bastard knows what he’s doing.
Tumblr media
alan isn’t too happy with that, because the island belongs to the volcano god, whanganui,
Tumblr media
WHO PROTECTS US FROM EVIL AND HAAARM AND WHAT ALL ELSE.
(i can find no evidence that whanganui is actually a god, as opposed to just A Bit Of New Zealand. if they are, i’m more than happy to go back and edit this as would be religiously considerate.)
Tumblr media
this is the face of a man who knows he has fucked up.
still, brain decides yet again that his pride comes before any kind of rational decision, so he decides to tell them that whanganui sent him to the island to rule over them,
Tumblr media
as proven by his fire powers.
(ETA: i missed this last time. why is brain carrying a lighter around? that episode isn’t for a good few more seasons yet.)
Tumblr media
alan is unimpressed.
Tumblr media
I CAN TRAP YOUR SOULS INSIDE THIS GLASS
Tumblr media Tumblr media
“i can make bubbles with my spit!”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
apparently this is a real talent on the island. who’d have thought. (they do not believe it to be a sign of god. it’s just really cool.)
so brain gets a hand building brainania.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
it has everything one could possibly need.
actually pretty much as soon as the airport and the gift shop are built, brain heads to washington, so evidently he holds the strong opinion that this is everything a country could possibly need. odd. still, maybe he plans on adding stuff once he becomes world ruler, or whatever.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
so with that established, The Most Exalted ned limpopo gets out of the car. hassan lembeck is also here. he is attempting to make an origami bird out of a newspaper.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
no bird for you, mr lembeck. no bird for you.
they wander off to go and see mr bisck, who is currently playing with a little toy plane.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
he reacts to the news that the prime minister of brainania is here to see him with “oh great, more moochers,”
Tumblr media
and does not seem to take kindly to having tiny mice on his desk, even if they are reasonably exalted.
Tumblr media
though a quick database search tells him said mice have no record of financial trouble, or, indeed, a credit rating, so. he tells them to go away.
Tumblr media
“go away.”
okay. hassan doesn’t take this well.
Tumblr media
as Exalted Ned Limpopo gently tries to persuade mr bisck that he could “harm negotations” between brainania and the us (a lot more politely than he usually explains things to people, may i add) hassan chimes in with a haven’t you people ever heard of bold claim that brainania, if slighted, will INVADE YOUR LANDS
Tumblr media
GO BOOM BOOM BOOM
Tumblr media
AND MAKE YOU ALL OUR PATHETIC SLAAAAAAAAAAAAVES.
Tumblr media
mr bisck does not like this idea, it seems.
as he rushes off to tell the UN, brain informs pinky that he has
Tumblr media
“just created an international incident.”
“oh, thank you, brain.”
Tumblr media
“in the words of the immortal yogi bear, this is dejavu all over again.”
Tumblr media
so the boys turn up on PUNCHLINE, WITH FRED FLUBBLE.
Tumblr media
there he is. “perhaps you gentlemen would care to climb up on the desk?”
Tumblr media
they make it, just about.
Tumblr media
and sing a fun little song about brainania’s war victories, i guess.
Tumblr media
WE WILL FIGHT AND NEVER QUIT
FIND ME A ROOFTOP AND I WILL SPIT. NARF
Tumblr media Tumblr media
this is not well recieved by the us military.
Tumblr media
unfortunately, as the US press secretary points out, the us cannot go to war with a country it can’t find,
Tumblr media
(wuss.)
Tumblr media
so instead the mice are invited to dinner at the white house.
Tumblr media
“in a few short hours, pinky, we shall have our foreign aid loan, and then the world!”
“birdy birdy birdy! narf!”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
“i sense much of this historic moment is lost on you.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
at the white house, a very bored looking individual introduces The Most Exalted Ned Limpopo (feat. hassan lembeck), and bill clinton shakes his hand.
Tumblr media
“me number one fella. other fellas number ten. catchy all same same. you savvy?”
“i speak fluent english.”
“eyyyy. haha. sure you do.”
Tumblr media
“all brainania ever wanted from the US was friendship. friendship, and fourteen billion dollars and fifty nine cents. the friendship i will treasure. the money i will spend on polo ponies and cruise missiles.”
brain has a brief discussion with hilary clinton over the advantages of strontium ninety versus uranium two-thirty-eight,
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
bill clinton pulls this face and tells them it Sounds Smart,
Tumblr media
and the mice bounce merrily back to mr bisck to get their foreign aid check.
Tumblr media
“you better not lose it, buster!!! i just erased your records!! you won’t get another one from me!!!!”
Tumblr media
HA.
Tumblr media
“one should be enough. thanks and farewell, “
Tumblr media
“you niggling bureaucrat.”
Tumblr media
conclusion:
Tumblr media
upon returning back to brainania, The Most Exalted Ned Limpopo finds a letter from alan addressed to him. it’s also mouse sized, which is adorable. apparently, whanganui,
Tumblr media
WHO PROTECTS US FROM EVIL AND WHAT ALL ELSE
Tumblr media
is “blinking mad”, and the volcano is going to explode.
Tumblr media
brain, obviously, does not believe in whanganui, and is mostly just mad that he’s lost his workforce. still, as pinky points out,
Tumblr media
“at least we've still got brainania!”
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
“i sense life has taken another sardonic twist.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
still, they do, barely, have enough time to reach the shoreline and start swimming away from the imminently exploding volcano. perhaps it should have been, yknow, a pretty decent sign that the natives cleared out. historically, people who live in these places tend to know about them, but what of that when brain is number one guy same same you savvy.
🙄
anyway the karmatic response to all of that previous racism is that a tidal wave sweeps them back onto the volcano,
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
which then blasts them into space.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(okay not literally space. but they do end up on a little raft in the middle of the ocean. don’t ask me where the raft came from. i have no idea.)
Tumblr media
oof.
Tumblr media
“mother nature has slammed her unmerciful fist on our fair isle, pinky.”
Tumblr media
“do you know what this means?”
Tumblr media
“birdy birdy birdy!!!!”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
brain does not appreciate Birdy Birdy Birdy.
Tumblr media
“blast it, pinky!”
Tumblr media
“i said, do you know what this means!!”
Tumblr media
“it means you just ripped up our foreign aid cheque.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
one should be enough, huh?
brain: 7 pinky: 7 outside influence: 13
like, i don’t know. maybe pinky shouldn’t have been making oragami birds out of the foreign aid cheque. but, while silly, it’s not like it did any harm. brain.... brain just needs to chill.
Tumblr media
“well, aren’t you the tiniest foreigners i’ve had in here all morning. i’m mr appleby, can i help you?”
Tumblr media
“yes. we would like to have relations with you. and steal some milk duds.”
Tumblr media
“we wish to establish diplomatic relations with the us. i am the prime minister, and this is my minister of finance.”
Tumblr media
“brainania--? oh, i remember you. you used to be a.... suburb of prague.”
Tumblr media
“can you prove you’re a nation?”
“yes! we have postcards.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
“that’s the fjord of pinky.”
Tumblr media
“you foreign folk sure have your own.... queer little ways.”

First Arctic Navigation in February (Bloomberg) A tanker sailed through Arctic sea ice in February for the first time, the latest sign of how quickly the pace of climate change is accelerating in the Earth’s northernmost regions. The Christophe de Margerie was accompanied by the nuclear-powered 50 Let Pobedy icebreaker as it sailed back to Russia this month after carrying liquified natural gas to China through the Northern Sea Route in January. Both trips broke navigation records. The experimental voyage happened after a year of extraordinarily warm conditions in the Arctic that have sent shockwaves across the world, from the snowstorm that blanketed Spain in January to the blast of cold air that swept through Canada in mid-February, moving deep into the South as far as Texas. The Arctic is warming more than twice as quickly as the rest of the world and the area covered by ice there has reached historic lows multiple times over the past 12 months. The melting in the region is already in line with the worst-case climate scenarios outlined by scientists.
Biden mourns 500,000 dead, balancing nation’s grief and hope (AP) With sunset remarks and a national moment of silence, President Joe Biden on Monday confronted head-on the country’s once-unimaginable loss—half a million Americans in the COVID-19 pandemic—as he tried to strike a balance between mourning and hope. “We often hear people described as ordinary Americans. There’s no such thing,” he said Monday evening. “There’s nothing ordinary about them. The people we lost were extraordinary.” The president, who lost his first wife and baby daughter in a car collision and later an adult son to brain cancer, leavened the grief with a message of hope. “This nation will smile again. This nation will know sunny days again. This nation will know joy again. And as we do, we’ll remember each person we’ve lost, the lives they lived, the loved ones they left behind.” He said, “We have to resist becoming numb to the sorrow. We have to resist viewing each life as a statistic or a blur or, on the news. We must do so to honor the dead. But, equally important, to care for the living.”
Texans Needed Food and Comfort After a Brutal Storm. As Usual, They Found It at H-E-B. (NYT) The past week had been a nightmare. A winter storm, one of the worst to hit Texas in a generation, robbed Lanita Generous of power, heat and water in her home. The food she had stored in her refrigerator and freezer had spoiled. She was down to her final five bottles of water. But on Sunday, as the sun shined and ice thawed in Austin, Ms. Generous did the same thing as many Texans in urgent need of food, water and a sense of normalcy: She went to H-E-B. “They’ve been great,” she said, adding with just a touch of hyperbole: “If it hadn’t been for the bread and peanut butter, I would have died in my apartment.” H-E-B is a grocery store chain. But it is also more than that. People buy T-shirts that say “H-E-B for President,” and they post videos to TikTok declaring their love, like the woman clutching a small bouquet of flowers handed to her by an employee: “I wish I had a boyfriend like H-E-B. Always there. Gives me flowers. Feeds me.” For many Texans, H-E-B reflected the ways the state’s maverick spirit can flourish: reliable for routine visits but particularly in a time of disaster, and a belief that the family-owned chain—with a vast majority of its more than 340 locations inside state lines—has made a conscious choice to stay rooted to the idea of being a good neighbor. “It’s like H-E-B is the moral center of Texas,” said Stephen Harrigan, a novelist and journalist who lives in Austin. “There seems to be in our state a lack of real leadership, a lack of real efficiency, on the political level. But on the business level, when it comes to a grocery store, all of those things are in place.”
Hunger in Central America skyrockets, U.N. agency says (Reuters) The number of people going hungry in El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua has nearly quadrupled in the last two years, the United Nations said on Tuesday, as Central America has been battered by an economic crisis. New data released by the UN’s World Food Program (WFP) showed nearly 8 million people across the four countries are experiencing hunger this year, up from 2.2 million in 2018. “The COVID-19-induced economic crisis had already put food on the market shelves out of reach for the most vulnerable people when the twin hurricanes Eta and Iota battered them further,” Miguel Barreto, WFP Regional Director for Latin America and the Caribbean, said in a statement.
Prison riots in Ecuador leave 62 dead (AP) Sixty-two inmates have died in riots at prisons in three cities in Ecuador as a result of fights between rival gangs and an escape attempt, authorities said Tuesday. Prisons Director Edmundo Moncayo said in a news conference that 800 police offices have been helping to regain control of the facilities. Hundreds of officers from tactical units had been deployed since the clashes broke out late Monday. Moncayo said that two groups were trying to gain “criminal leadership within the detention centers” and that the clashes were precipitated by a search for weapons carried out Monday by police officers.
Mount Etna eruption lights up Sicily's night sky (BBC) Mount Etna is erupting again, and its hot lava fountains are illuminating the Sicilian sky. The eruption began earlier this week, and Etna has since been spewing massive orange plumes of smoke and thick clouds of ash. Etna is Europe's most active volcano, and it erupts relatively often. The last major eruption was in 1992. Its eruptions have rarely caused damage or injury in recent decades - and officials believe this eruption is no exception. Stefano Branco, the head of the National Institute for Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV) in the nearby city of Catania, told Italian news agency AGI earlier this week: "We've seen worse."
Cow science (Foreign Policy) A new national exam on cows developed by the Indian government-backed National Cow Commission has been shelved following controversy over its less-than-scientific contents. The curriculum for the test involved erroneous claims about the virtues of Indian cows that were widely ridiculed by the country’s scientific community. Among the “facts” on display: That Indian cows have a special “solar pulse” in their humps which can supposedly convert sun rays into vitamin D that is then passed on to milk, and an assertion that Indian cows are “strong” whereas foreign cows are “lazy.” The issue of cows, considered sacred by Hindus, and their treatment has become even more of a cultural wedge issue in India following the rise of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Hindu nationalist government, with sometimes deadly results. Attacks by vigilante “cow protection” groups killed 44 people between 2015 and 2018 according to Human Rights Watch, with Muslims among the majority of those targeted.
Japan creates Minister of Loneliness to fight COVID-19 suicides (New York Post) Japan just appointed a Minister of Loneliness—to try to combat its exploding suicide rate amid COVID-19. Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga named Tetsushi Sakamoto, a cabinet member already trying to beef up the depressed country’s birthrate, to the post. Suga noted earlier this month that Japanese women, in particular, have been struggling with depression since the coronavirus pandemic began about a year ago—with nearly 880 female suicide victims in the country alone in October, a 70 percent increase over the year before, the BBC reported. Japanese suicide expert Michiko Ueda told the BBC that part of the problem involves an increasing number of single women in the country who don’t have stable employment. “A lot of women are not married anymore,” she said. “They have to support their own lives, and they don’t have permanent jobs.”
Facebook Strikes Deal to Restore News Sharing in Australia (NYT) Facebook said on Monday that it would restore the sharing and viewing of news links in Australia after gaining more time to negotiate over a proposed law that would require it to pay for news content that appears on its site. The social network had blocked news links in Australia last week as the new law neared passage. The legislation includes a code of conduct that would allow media companies to bargain individually or collectively with digital platforms over the value of their news content. Facebook had vigorously objected to the code, which would curb its power and drive up its spending for content, as well as setting a precedent for other governments to follow. The company had argued that news would not be worth the hassle in Australia if the bill became law. But on Monday, Facebook returned to the negotiating table after the Australian government granted a few minor concessions.
U.S.-Saudi ties (Foreign Policy) The families of the three U.S. service members killed and 13 others injured by Mohammed Alshamrani, a Saudi airman who went on a shooting spree at Naval Air Station Pensacola in 2019, are suing Saudi Arabia’s government, alleging that the kingdom failed to screen him appropriately before sending him to the United States for training. The families are filing the lawsuit against Saudi Arabia based on a 2016 law that allows U.S. citizens to sue foreign governments over terrorist attacks—legislation that was initially passed in order to allow the families of 9/11 victims to bring a civil suit against Saudi Arabia.
Italian Ambassador Among Three Killed in Attack on U.N. Convoy in Congo (NYT) For Luca Attanasio, Italy’s ambassador to the Democratic Republic of Congo, humanitarian work was at the core of his mission. The 43-year-old had moved with his wife to the capital, Kinshasa, in 2017, where their family grew to include three young daughters. He rose to the rank of ambassador in 2019, the pinnacle of his diplomatic career. On Monday, Mr. Attanasio was among three people killed in an attack on a humanitarian convoy near the city of Goma, the World Food Program and Italy’s Foreign Ministry said, the latest in a wave of violence in that part of the central African nation. The deaths of Mr. Attanasio; an Italian Embassy official, named by the Foreign Ministry as Vittorio Iacovacci; and Mustapha Milambo, a driver for the World Food Program, have rattled the international diplomatic community and drawn condemnation from across the globe.
Flood damage and insurance (NPR) Right now, over 4 million houses and small apartments in the contiguous United States are at substantial risk of expensive flood damage, and the cost of flood damage to homes will increase by 50 percent over the next 30 years according to the First Street Foundation. As the climate changes, places that were perfectly safe to live in will no longer be as sure of bets as they once were, and the costs are about to be a serious reality check. The National Flood Insurance Program is $36 billion in debt because of underestimated risks. Over the next several years, FEMA plans to raise rates up to 18 percent a year until prices are accurate, starting this October.

Ship Owners using data to reduce operational costs
Maritime industry is responsible for all the global trade happening. Around 90% of goods we use have sailed across the ocean to reach us. With hundreds of ships sailing the world oceans, there is a lot of data industry is generating and remains unused. Operations can be made Cost-Effective and improve efficiency and also be used to streamline and centralized the ship operations.
Digitalization of the vessels is a strategic approach that can help ship management companies and ship operators to invest in technology and make better use of the data that is tapped and monitor, on large scale this can help in fuel optimization, performance monitoring and predictive diagnostics. Machine data from ME, AE, Scrubbers, boilers, Pumps when used in correlation can interpret the cause of alarms and alerts.
Ways you can use big data in the shipping industry
Analyzing machine, equipment data enables shipping companies to make better decisions, improve performance, predict and address problems, define KPI’s and prevent failure of the machines and avoid downtime. Here are 5 ways you can use data for actionable insight and to gain a competitive advantage.
1.     Predictive analysis: Predictive analytics can help companies to plan out number of operational, management and activities, with the data to support every decision. It helps offshore team to plan and maintain the supply chain. Ship owners can track and maintain schedules for the ship, plan the spare replacement and have maintenance schedule lined out. This information can be used to understand the performance of the vessels, machine and engine wear & tear, creating transparency and most important to monitor every single equipment. It can also be used by senior management to take strategic & financial decisions, for the fleet.
2.     Spot trends: The ship owners and operators can use data to spot trends in machine and engine behaviour. In the global maritime industry where we observe tight schedule, deadlines, and various unpredicted actions can stop the complete sailing body, which could be understated changes in weather patterns which hampers the ETA or adds resistance that causes engine to add more power to increase the speed. This can impact engine performance increase fuel consumption and added more resistance on ship means early maintenance or change in spare. For operators, advanced monitoring system that help them in tracking and monitoring the performance and tracking the trends in easy format can, help them in planning, maintain and allocating budget for the various operational cost as required by analyzing the data.
3.     Route optimization: Whether for fleet owner or the operator, data can help with route optimization incorporating weather, traffic, ETA, seca and eca zones and  other factors like fuel change. With algorithm working on it on a well-defined optimized route can be charted out for the sailing. Having data coming in live and historical data can help in understanding the fuel consumption patterns, weather patterns and other data from navigational equipment of the ship can bring in data about the performance of the ship very voyage happening and helping operators to have comparative study of the single vessel or for the fleet.
4.     Charter party agreement: Owners or charters can make their contracts can using data. Your fleet records can be managed on single platform with live data, and agreement KPI’s can be charted on those data terms. Knowing ME, AE, performance having data to prove the fuel consumption and maintenance records and spares replacement and performance data. These data collected from Engine room, Bridge and navigational equipment can add value in agreement making process and set KPI,s.  These data packets of every machinery from the ship are proving to be gold mine for the operators and charters and owners. One can monitor anytime if the KPI’s are maintained and every parameter for the ship can be added, tracked, monitored.
5.     Predictive maintenance & PMS Schedules: We see ships are always sailing and needs to attend different port calls and deliver on tight schedules. Having a vessel down for maintenance or spare change, unplanned maintenance is huge loss for the owners and operators. Live data from machines and historical data of vessel performance will help the owners to plan. Predictive maintenance is taking charge over PMS as owners and operators are having ME, AE, Scrubbers and boilers monitored with different parameters one can have accurate and precise data to take action well in advance to avoid failure and downtime. With data available, maintenance dedicated to specific engine, pump or equipment can be carried out and avoid unwanted downtime and expense of spares maintenance and any serious fatality to the asset.
Data has always been driving important management decisions and now with the use of the various machine learning algorithms, this is becoming a driving force for the industry in setting the benchmark for the operations. Having one platform to tap data, analyze and monitor using different charts is important. One platform avoids data manipulation and creates transparency. Know more about what a multitenant platform can do.

Star Trek Discovery: ep 2
Okay, I absolutely adored the premiere, which I liveblogged Sunday night. But I’ve been feeling rotten and groggy and didn’t watch episode 2 until tonight.
I’m kind of glad I waited.
I’m transcribing remarks I made to a friend in a private chatroom while watching, and then I’ve added some thoughts afterwards.
SPOILERS.
Ep 2.
Raw remarks transcribed from private chat while watching (slightly edited)
So, our cliffhanger ended with Michael committing mutiny trying to save them, her captain betrayed and pointing a gun at her, and a whole Klingon fleet warping in like several buckets of shit flying towards a fan.
I’m still trying to get used to Sarek being nicer to a human trying to Vulcan than he was to a son whom he practically disowned for leaving Vulcan to join Starfleet. But I love Sarek so will try to muffle the "buts." I want Amanda to show up.
Parting word to Michael: "Behave." On the bright side, seems like it took her seven years before she LOL NOPED.
I hope the Klingon fans are happy. This is a very ponderous language to listen to when it's whole scenes of dialog and not just quick commands or insults. But I know there's a whole branch of fans who embrace Klingon culture and language, and I hope they're as thrilled as I was to hear Sindarin Elvish spoken.  (And that they're not too perturbed that the Klingon look has mutated again.)
Oh SHIT. I know the Captain was trying to defuse situation with diplomacy, but did they not have their shields up? Or was this just an old ship and/or Klingons managed to puncture shields. Ouch ouch ouch.
Wow, Michael is not having a good day. Waking up in remains of brig with failing containment fields around her — whole sequence is impressive and sad.
I like the way they're employing FX in service to story. It's hard not to let CGI overwhelm. But here, no matter how spectacular FX are, they're functional, rather than an end to themselves: like incidental music the Big FX moments help set mood/tone and give audience catch breath to process what just happened. As opposed to only using FX to foster one mood, maximum adrenaline, and keep audience off-balance so they have no time to catch breath and reflect on situation.
Intense telepathic scene with Sarek. Man he really likes this kid. He is one crazy ass Vulcan, even if he won't admit it: sharing a katra with a near stranger, especially a human child, is pretty drastic. (Also I'm confused: thought he adopted her after parents died in attack, but it looks like Michael was already his ward during attack?
ARGH.
Sarek: "I did not come here to judge your actions. I came here to—"
*Pumpkin, who likes to snooze on desk next to keyboard and occasionally use it as pillow at inconvenient moments, carefully and deliberately stretches out paw and plants it over ESC key, backing up browser window to several URLs ago, losing livestream.*
Cats. Such exquisite timing.
Back online.
Okay yes [STC sounded slightly noncommittal when I was enthusing about restraint of FX] now they're getting a little show-offy. But yikes. First time I've ever seen a space battle using classical Greek naval warfare maneuver. Trireme beak-ram!
...although it could be coincidence, and I'm reading it that way because of my classical studies background. They might've come up with that unusual and dramatic visual independently. At any rate, impressive.
OOOOO. Just hit scene where Captain, out of options, sees Klingons beaming up their dead, and she sees option.  I've been kind of waiting for her to be proactive instead of reactive. Earlier her hands were tied by trying to avoid conflict (following orders).
...DAMMIT. Just Googled to find out spelling of Phillipa's last name and saw the kind of spoiler I really hate to see. Stupid, stupid me.  I really honestly didn't know, since I had been so strenuously avoiding behind-the-scenes stuff.
[At this point I stopped babbling in the chatroom to watch final scenes, so rest is post-watch thoughts.]
At least we have one great sequence between Burnham and Captain Georgiou, although the lull to confront one another and devise a strategy was a little forced— Klingons being very polite about not finishing them off. And YES, YES YES, finally seeing Michelle Yeoh fighting, which believe it or not I never have. (I don't watch many films or really much media.)
:( Ouch. So close. Just a second or two longer.
So that's that. Man, that's gotta be a record even for Trek; can't even get through two eps without ship's destruction and crew evacuation. (Mom and I used to get annoyed at destroying Enterprise for shock value; first time was so dramatic and meaningful, whereas repeat felt gimmicky.)
Not sure Michael's Expository Speech is did her any favors at this trial, but at least now we hear what she thinks.
Teaser for next episode (or "real" Discovery show) follows. Kinda confusing that they're convicts but on a Federation ship? Or did she get transferred from prison?
I am still mourning the captain and really not in the mood to parse the trailer. DAMMIT DAMMIT DAMMIT. I was wary of this show, but after watching Ep 1 I let my guard down and was SO EXCITED.
I had seen one article about this series last spring showing what looked like a predominantly white-dude bridge with generic-looking white male captain and a few tokens, just like TOS. That had dampened my enthusiasm for this show and prevented me from getting into it or looking forward to it.
But recently I saw posts saying, "Yo, WOC captain and first officer!" (or rather, in Tumblr's usual WE MUST MAKE YOU FEEL GUILTY FOR NOT SUPPORTING THIS THING YOU WEREN’T AWARE OF, SHAME ON YOU!!! way, there was a post berating Tumblr for lack of photosets and buzz and excitement over Michelle Yeoh and Sonequa Martin-Green, and why weren't we getting behind WOCs when we'd been all excited for Gal Gadot?) And I thought, Wait—what?! I thought this was going to be generic white dude captain with token black female first officer which is okay but not ANYTHING LIKE as cool as what you're saying?
And since I do try to avoid spoilers and PR I didn't know Yeoh wasn't going to be the regular series captain. Or rather, I was confused why the hype I was seeing now differed so drastically from that one article I’d started to skim and then closed thinking, “Nah, I’m going to avoid spoilers.” Had the showrunners changed their minds and decided to bring in Michelle Yeoh as an upgrade after seeing their version of Captain Pike wasn’t good enough to anchor a series?I was just going to wait and see.
I forgot any doubts when Episode 1 gave me EXACTLY WHAT I WANTED: Two great female characters with a friendship and professional working relationship. Banter. Excellence. Skills and wits. Clunky TOS tech and new shiny bridge set. Smart captain. Brave first officer. With two WOC they couldn't be tokens; they had to be expanded as just... 3 dimensional characters.
I was so here for that. I loved that whole opening minisode, and also the Captain sending Michael off to play in a brief voyage of discovery and enjoying that her first officer was enjoying herself.
Their friendship was perfect, legendary Kirk and Spock material. It was distracting me from the other bridge crew— even Saru, who is an interesting character, but I was focused so much on these two women— but I figured other characters would get filled out in subsequent episodes.
And now?
"Here. Here's what you really wanted. Two women being superbly competent officers with a meaningful friendship, leading a show just the way Kirk and Spock did. And it's going to be about discovery and an older woman mentoring another one, and tackling difficult ethical problems without providing easy answers and— PSYCHE!
“...FOOLED YOU! Two leading women in a Kirk-Spock dynamic? Oh, we could never do that. So we're killing off your already-favorite character. As consolation prize, here, have an incarcerated and demoralized WOC who has to be 'grateful' to a white dude for letting her out of jail. Power imbalance between her and captain, no close friendship, and oh yeah, instead of voyage-of-discovery and complicated-ethical-problems Star Trek, it's going to be various people being macho and angry, and a depressing Federation-Klingon War."
 I hope I'm wrong.
It feels like they gave me everything I'd hoped for and more, and then, once I'd let my guard down, they took it away. I'm left with a character and actor (Sonequa Martin-Green) I like enough that I'm going to watch anyway...for now. But I'm back to being wary. And here we have yet another WOC/minority being killed to make way for generic white dude. So now I'm disillusioned and won’t trust this show, and we're only at the end of ep 2.
Okay, yeah, I'm pissed.
Discovery could redeem itself and turn out to be fantastic. There is a lot of potential here and a lot to like. Saru and Burnham are good characters, and I assume some of the others will be too. But they're going to have to pull off a miracle now to keep me from fantasizing about the better show that COULD HAVE BEEN.
ETA: so maybe I should have read the behind-the-scenes stuff beforehand so I’d be prepared for this premiere to be backstory, in effect. I guess everyone else knew her death was coming, and could appreciate the drama while anticipating this would be a tragedy. Either I’m naive, or too groggy/tired to pick up the Obi-Wan vibes.

Spaceman Tim: Pt. 2
Tim thought he was alone. He left the cockpit of his drifting spacecraft, shifting aft to inspect his sleeping bunk and living space. Aft of that was the airlock and cargo hold. A few empty Ginan™ Tonic drinking packets floated around, along with some Alterian coins and various other debris synonymous with spending months on end with nobody but your own company.
Being alone had never bothered Tim. One does not make a career of traveling vast distances between squalid, outlying colonies, getting paid to transport life-saving supplies (which the colonists pay extravagant amounts for) if one is not prepared for the enduring and lonely voyages at hand. One certainly does not continue to do so for 15 years.
No, Tim definitely enjoyed his solitude. When people asked him how he coped with being alone so much of the time - and someone always asked - he would give some pop-psych buzzwords about only finding your true self when nobody else is around. Occasionally, if someone became too pushy he would make up a traumatizing story about a fellow crew member on an early trip systematically trying to cook and serve everybody on board. “We worried when Johnson went missing. Then Phillips, and even Stinky Steve… I knew as soon as that quiche hit the plate, it couldn’t be anybody else. After that trip, I made it mandatory for every crew member to shower daily.”
A part of him may have believed his own words (perhaps not the ones he blatantly made up), but in all actuality it was never something he could explain. He was comfortable working in his own presence and that was the way it was.
Still though, the realization that he would spend the remainder of his life in a tin cage of isolation had only begun to sink in for Tim. He decided the best way to handle things would be to handle nothing at all.
Returning to his daily routine, he spent some time cleaning the ship as best he could. He reactivated the day/night cycle on the lights and prepared a meal to retain as much normalcy as he could. He turned some music on the ship’s address system and glanced habitually at the navigation instruments before retiring properly. He was still jarred by seeing the blank screen where an ETA should have been. He turned up the music and added to the collection of empty Ginan™ Tonic packets to distract himself enough to sleep.
By the next morning he had almost forgotten where he was. The undue silence reminded him starkly. Nevertheless he carried on with his daily routine, this time beginning with the exercise machine. Then he ate. Then music. On an ordinary day he would typically kill time calculating the ship’s fuel consumption or anonymously sending false pizza orders to nearby government complexes over the comms array. Instead, he scribbled some drawings on blank pieces of paper.
By the fourth day he had a new daily routine worked out. On the fifth he grew bored of it.
Tim sat in silent thought in the airlock, staring blankly. This was day fifteen. He stared at the window on the door, at the stars outside. None of them looked familiar. Tim considered what his life could have been had he not bought the Eye. Opportunities he missed due to the long voyages. Friends he never had. Never would have now.
He reached for another Ginan™ packet. The last one was emptied hours ago. The one thing the replicator cannot replicate, he thought. He punched the side of the airlock, though it hurt his fist more than the ship. Without any nearby planets transmitting music, he was stuck listening to the same few songs he carried on his ship. At this point the music sounded like it was laughing at him. He left the airlock and squelched the audio.
Some of the closer celestial bodies moved slowly across the window. He shifted himself to a position where he could see them better, thinking he could make out a system ahead. He made a note to attempt to figure how close he would pass by later, and he returned to the silence of the airlock.
As he pondered the same unfamiliar stars, the silence was interrupted by a tapping.
Tap, tap, tap…
Or perhaps more of a knocking?
Tim looked around. The sound was coming from the cargo hold.
He opened the hatch to see what could be making the noise. It was the first he would even see what he was carrying. All that occupied the deep, cylindrical compartment was a single box stood up on its end and strapped down. It looked almost like a coffin, but with a mesh window on the front. As Tim looked closer he could see movement inside the box.
Then the box started to speak.
“You pilots are getting uglier these days.”
Tim stared blankly at the box.
“Well? Are we there yet, or are you as inept a pilot as your beard is mangy?”
Tim looked around, then felt his face. He hadn’t shaved in a week now, now had he washed in some time. In his defence, he was unconscious for most of it.
“Sorry, I wasn’t expecting… guests…” Tim trailed off, still staring dumbly at the box. “Who are you?”
“I believe I asked a question first.”
Tim looked at the cockpit of the ship, then back at the box. “There was, a, uh…” He didn’t know what to say. They were dead? He knew it was true, but he hadn’t really said it out loud yet.
“There was an accident. We lost power. We are waiting for someone to pick us up,” Tim shifted himself into a straighter posture. “Now as captain of this vessel I demand to know who you are?”
“Ooh, captain of a derelict vessel,” The door of the box rattled briefly, “what are you going to do, lock me up? It would appear that someone already beat you to it.”
Tim was at a complete loss for words, as though in the past 15 days he had forgotten how to communicate with people entirely. Even the sound of the breathing coming from inside the box seemed foreign to him, but also… comforting.
“Do you need any food?” Tim asked the box.
“I have everything I need in here.”
“Great. If you would excuse me…”
“Oh of course.”
Tim closed the hatch to the hold and returned to the cockpit. The situation had just changed drastically. He flicked on the Emergency Computer and tried to access the cargo manifest for the delivery. All it would tell him was that the destination was a prison.
This began to look like a prison transport, but as far as Tim knew they had special guarded ships for those jobs. Unless they wanted it kept a secret?
Time went by as Tim watched the stars out the window once again, this time with a whirlwind of thoughts filling his brain. He thought about the box. About how long the stranger had been in there. Prisoners were usually kept in stasis for transport, with the anesthesia timed to wear off after arrival at the prison. How would this person react to the news that they are never going to make it to their destination? Would they be dangerous?
Most of all, Tim considered having someone to break his solitude as he waited out his existence. It was this notion – an idea dancing in that grey area between selfless and selfish – that drove Tim to what he was about to do. Something Tim couldn’t fathom doing, and yet couldn’t see any other way forward. He opened the cargo hold and approached the box.
Tim was a few feet from the stranger and could feel himself being watched, but no words were spoken. He was shaking even though he didn’t know why.
“I’m going to let you out of your box.”

The Wrong Choice of Bunker Port Can be a Costly Mistake for Ship Owners
Bunkers are amongst the biggest costs of a voyage. Thus, making the right choice can be crucial. While many shipping companies have bunker teams, the choice of bunker usually starts with a chartering manager during early voyage estimation.
Before a vessel is open, the chartering managers will assess various voyage options. This usually happens well before as a ship without work is unrecoverable earnings. For accurate estimates during any voyage, the chartering manager has to collect data on both the ports and vessel for each voyage.
The vessel parameters usually do not change for any voyage. The sailing speeds, consumption table, allowed draft, tank capacities, and cargo capacity, amongst other things, are usually constant. However, various other parameters are variable. They need to be collected for each voyage. They include the weather forecast, calling costs, sea distance, and bunker prices.
Factors that are Checked
To ensure the voyage estimation is accurate, the commercial operators have to check each port for these things:
Bunker Only Call – is it allowed and what are additional calling costs?
Deviation Time – What is the cost of any deviation?
Added Consumption – How much extra fuel is needed for a deviation?
ROB – Will the vessel have enough fuel to reach its port?
Bunkering Time – How long does the bunkering take and are there likely to be weather delays?
Suppliers and Specifications – Who are the suppliers, are they reliable and are the specifications needed available?
Market risk – What is the ETA for each port? Is it possible to fix the price or do you have to wait and risk a change in market conditions?
Bunker – With the above in mind, what are the prevailing prices and are they low enough to justify a stop?
Doing this for all bunker options on each potential voyage might not be feasible even with a huge team. However, how much does it matter?
  A Case Study
There is a common belief that only a handful on large bunker ports exists in the world. As a result, most believe these are the cheapest options. For instance, most owners will bunker repeatedly in a port in Rotterdam, Singapore, Gibraltar, Houston, or Fujairah. Thus, they will not evaluate any other nearby options. However, the data shows this might be quite costly.
Example: Busan-Shanghai- Doha Voyage
On a voyage from Busan to Shanghai and then to Doha, the cheapest bunker port will change after 2.82 days when various factors are checked.
By doing a careful analysis, we find that in the past 6 months, one of Fujairah, Singapore, Zhoustan, and Busan ports were the worst bunkering options for the voyage. During this period, bunkering at these ports would have cost +$9.5K more. It would also have led to a loss of $257/day in potential TC earnings on the voyage. The estimate is based on an assumed 31 sailing days and 6 days port stay.
Even the second-best option would still have led to costs of +$2.2K and this equals to an extra $60 daily for the voyage.
When this is multiplied for an entire fleet, it means the costs of picking the wrong bunker can end up costing a company hundreds of thousands in lost TC earnings every year.
Where Technology Helps
Given the number of variables that need to be checked, it is not realistic to expect any team, no matter its size, to continually re-estimate all possible options. Most bunker desks are charged with negotiating, managing credit lines, and fixing the firm stems. They also deal with claims and researching strategies for 2020.
The technology they have created is built for doing just this. It checks thousands of potential bunker options in seconds and combines it with other factors like distance, live process, deviation costs, and others to find the cheapest options. Besides saving money, it cuts down the hours spent collecting bunker indicators and checking which will be the best port.
The automated update takes place every 15 minutes. Besides that, the software is an accurate distance calculator. Technology to optimize performance is used everywhere in the maritime world, the choice of bunker port should also benefit from technology. BunkerEX is offering free trials to help people making smart bunkering choices.
With the LNG bunkering market expected to reach $10,000 million by 2023 all parts of the LNG bunkering supply chain will be in demand.

It is basically a bowl of French fries covered with peppery gravy and cheese. Any Canadian dinner is just incomplete without poutine. Many cities also hold poutine festivals to celebrate this delicacy.
Butter tarts: This is one of the most traditional dishes of Canadian cooking.
