#''Credits to the original creator'' and ''I found the image on google / pinterest / etc.'' isn't a good enough excuse >.<
Note
I saw the moon phases post, about that person not crediting another persons work properly. I'm really sorry if this is a bad question... but how is one supposed to credit someone else's art? Is it really offensive to not post the words on their blog? The original post can be found by looking at the posts history/notes, right? So that's not really discrediting someone... right? I hope this isn't coming off as bitchy I'm legit confused. Or is it about saving an image and reposting with no credit?
Don’t worry, I get what you mean!
This is about someone saving an artist’s image, and then uploading it on their own account. That’s called “reposting,” and is different from just reblogging something. (This practice is unfortunately very popular in the witchy community.)
Some people repost things with credit (putting the art’s original url in the “source” box, adding a caption linking to the artist, etc), and in some situations, this can be kinda okay. But even then, it’s much better to simply reblog the art from the artist’s tumblr, instead of copying their post.
(Sidenote: Though it is polite to keep the artist’s caption when you reblog, it’s not required. But if a post says “don’t remove this caption,” then really, leave it on.)
Especially, beware of people who repost things without credit, because just like vivianthewitch here, it makes it appear to others as if they were the original content creator. That’s basically stealing, and it goes against tumblr’s community guidelines.
Just do your best to keep an eye out. If you see a post with a watermark that doesn’t match the url of the blog it was posted from, look into it. If a piece of art looks familiar, but is posted without a source or link (and possibly has only a few notes), be suspicious of it.
(Pro tip: using google’s reverse image search is a great way to find the sources of images. And just so you know, pinterest and weheartit are not sources! Most of the artwork on there is shared without attribution.)
So, go forth, and reblog art from the original artists! Check sources and do your best to make sure you don’t reblog reposts, and if you see a repost, let the artist know about it! Help make tumblr a better place for content creators. :)
