"are you okay?" question came with a soft expression, those working in a first responder space had to look out for one another when they could get a moment to. especially after events that had left them all scrambling, and spending days on end just trying to piece things back together. "it's been a rough few days, for everyone. but i promise, it's not a loaded question. i'm asking as a friend. we have to look after each other, you know?"

a quietness washed over the room, leaving just the two agents behind. it wasn't the easiest of situations to navigate, but once again, keen had surprised her. "how are you so calm?"

"you didn't need to come down here." head lifted carefully from where she was perched on the end of a hospital bed –– stitches carefully placed in her forehead from an altercation with the intelligence unit's most wanted for that particular week. she'd only actually gone to the hospital because there had been a refusal to let her continue to work the case if she didn't get checked over first. "it's just a bump, the team are just being over cautious. i'm fine."

knuckles rapped lightly on the door to david's apartment, the other gripping tightly at the bag of food she'd picked up on the way over. as the door opened in front of her, she presented the food with a grin. "a little birdie told me patrick is away at a conference this weekend, so i figured i should at least make sure you don't starve."

his words prompted the smallest of smile to curl up at the corner of her lips. it might have taken them a while to get to this point (a long while, actually), but it seemed as though they might have found some sort of a rhythm that actually worked. they were working for the same cause, after all, despite having sometimes very different methods to achieve it. "what if i run away?" she asked, an eyebrow lifting to challenge his words, just for the fun of it. "went back to chicago, or started over somewhere new? you following me, just to make sure i'm stuck with you?"

head tilted slightly as she listened to maeve. perhaps the two were more alike than she'd considered they were to begin with. she might not have been in and out of the foster system in that way, but that was only because they'd managed to avoid it. perhaps it would have provided her with some more stability –– perhaps not. "look at you now though. i bet kid-maeve wouldn't believe you if you told her everything that she has in front of her. it might not all be smooth sailing, but look at what you've achieved." that had to be something, didn't it? you couldn't count life in the number of tragedies you faced –– else you'd be counting forever. "you ever take your own advice on board? that you're just you?"

splatters of blood painted the tips of her boots, splashing up her legs and onto her shirt. she hadn't had time to clean up. she hadn't thought about going to her apartment, getting a change of clothes. she was moving like a ghost, drifting from one place to the next, following the protocol that she had to after her latest case, mind not yet processing the events that she'd witnessed. that she'd participated in. even when she'd been given the okay to leave, erin hadn't gone back to her apartment. she'd driven on autopilot, pulling up to the spot before she'd really realised where she was. thankfully, in the late of the night, it was quiet. "can i have some coffee?" she asked, having pushed through the door and paused in the doorway, eyes searching for sarah. "please?"

worry spread across the detective's face quickly, as if the previous expression had never been there at all. "what happened?" she asked, stepping closer to amelia. "are you hurt?"

"poor planning, mostly." erin offered, the slightest hint of a joke in her voice despite her face saying otherwise. pulling at her sleeping bag, the detective shifted in place slightly as she tried to make herself more comfortable, but with no avail. "wasn't it my idea to have some sort of weekend away with everyone anyway? and now i don't even get a bed to sleep in?" the floor wasn't exactly a suitable alternative. "serves us right for being the last car to arrive. next time, i'm getting here a day early."

a wave of sympathy washed over the detective, as she carefully considered the questions that she had to put to the other. erin always found herself sympathising with the young women that crossed her path –– likely because she'd been so desperate for the same sort of compassion when she'd been younger. it all came down to changing the system, one person at a time. perhaps if she'd have a cop show a little more care, then she might not have gotten so far down the path she'd chosen before she'd turned around. "take your time." she said, offering a small smile. "anything you do remember could be helpful to us, even if you think it's small. you'll be helping us." or so she hoped.

"maybe ––" the detective started, whisper of a smile threatening to curl up at her lips as she spoke, "–– you should have thought of that before you got into a fight."

"i've got your back." the words came with a certainty that erin was proud to carry with her. "you know that, don't you?"

“you here to take me up on my offer?” erin asked, stepping carefully down the stairs to where platt had told @griim​ to wait for the detective. “or just come to tell me to fuck off in person?”

 erin had struggled with those feelings herself. let them consume her, drag her under and back into a world that she'd long thought she'd left behind. but she'd made it back out. it might have been a case of practically being dragged out of it, but it had happened nonetheless. that's what gave her the confidence to know that maeve too could navigate the difficult course, and make it through the other side. it just took time.

"hold on to that lightness." the detective said, small smile of assurance dancing across her features. "remind yourself of it when disappears." another small nod of her head, pleased to hear that at least there was something, some sort of help for maeve. "that's good. because it's not going to consume you forever. and it might not ever go but at least –– it feels a little better than the day before."

her body was heavy with tiredness as she slammed her apartment door behind her, one hand equipped with a bag full of enough chinese food for her not to need any other sustenance for a couple of days. thoughts had been elsewhere as she walked through to her kitchen, it was only as her head lifted that she let out a "fuck!". bag dropped to the floor, hands instinctively landing on her firearm and beginning to pull it from its holster before eyes could process exactly who had caused that response in her. "amelia, what the fuck?" she asked, her voice louder than it ought to be for that time of night. "do you know i would have shot you? you can't just break in and wait in my apartment! haven't you ever thought about calling, or knocking?"
