"auntie" is not just for your mom or dad's sister? Auntie is for my older nanny's grown daughters, auntie is for the woman at the market hawking veggies my mom sent me to buy from but doesn't want me to pay full price for, auntie is for my first time taking public transportation alone to go to school & the person I ask to show me how to buy and load a metro card, auntie is for the cafeteria lady AND the woman selling 煎餅 outside of school from her cart, auntie is for good people who take you under their wing when you're just first starting out in the world as an 6-26 year old
Today at the post office the clerk was getting way too excited about my Mandarin, and even told me she thought I was Taiwanese when I was talking before she got a good look at me, but pride goeth before a fall because then I totally misunderstood her telling me about some kind of international holiday mail policy and wasted a lot of time filling out a horrible and incredibly detailed online form for the wrong kind of airmail service (thanks US gov’t for this splendid new policy, I wish a thousand paper cuts on whoever came up with it), and had to do everything all over again. At least I had had the presence of mind to write down the weights of all of the items on a scrap of paper before taping everything securely shut.
