I wish this season really was about Teio having to resign because of her recurring injury, and learning to live as a normal girl away from her racing academy peers. Teio finding a purpose in life beyond sporting fame, that same dream every other girl in her school clings to as well. Because we never see the girls do anything other than attend racing school, train, and then race -- what happens when they can’t?! What happens when they retire, what happens when they grow up? We never see any indication in Umamusume that the girls have a life at all outside of their inherited desire to race and win, and it feels like their lives functionally end after they stop racing. We never see them talk to or befriend any non-horse girls. We never see them talk about graduating, or moving out, quitting, or retiring.

It goes without saying that Umamusume is doomed from conception to be wildly dehumanizing. I mean really, teen moe girls in idol outfits and horse tails performing a song and dance upon winning a race, and being treated and talked about like they are literally animals? It is absurd, it is disgusting, it’s insanely misogynistic. But it takes a particularly grim turn when you think for a second about how these girls have nothing else going on in their entire life than what is on screen.

Season 2 of Umamusume brings up a question I had from season 1 -- what does a horse girl do when she can’t race anymore? -- and then ignores any possible answers other than “They just keep pushing and pushing and pushing until they can win again! They make a miracle happen!”, as if that is anything but kind of sick?
