Youtubers who know nothing about history stop making videos about queer history challenge
#[talk less smile more]#/like i don't think it's inherently bad it's making queer history more accessible#/but so often these videos are oversimplified and misinformative#/if you talk about how a historical figure was queer by modern standards you need to include the historical context!!!#/you need to consider what the norms regarding sexuality of the time were and how/if that person diverged from them!#/instead of projecting modern terminology and modern (western!) views on completely different cultural settings!#/most of the time that's way more interesting anyways!#/also there's just a lot of the 'i read this on the internet' kind of misinformation going around#/that completely disregards the scientific discourse on these topics and doesn't consider historical sources at all#/like. how do we know this thing? what kind of sources do we actually have for this and can they be trusted?#/basic source criticism come on people#/my general advice is to believe nothing anyone ever says about sappho. we know jack fucking shit about sappho.#/sigh it's our own fault isn't it. as historians. we need to get youtube channels.
