Okay so I finished the pilot episode of the new Mystery Incorporated show and I have so. many. thoughts. I typed these up as I was watching so they’re probably not the most eloquent. 😅 SO MANY SPOILERS so please don’t read if you haven’t seen.
Notes:
Love that Fred plays baseball!!!. Him having his baseball bat by the bed and all his little baseball trophies is a nice touch.
Looks like Daphne is a cheerleader in this one, as well as having won a few “Miss Coolsville” pageants.
Daphne’s initial outfit is perfect. I love the preppy look and the color pallet looks amazing. The greens and purples are just the right shade that nothing clashes.
The angle of Daphne being a rich girl with a lot of pressure on her is nice. I see this show taking influences from APN and SDMI (as well as the live action movies) which makes sense as those are both based within the town itself (not so much the 2002 movie or Curse of the Lake Monster but still). I’m feeling like we’ll definitely have Daphne push back against her status/pressures. I also like that they went with the Blake’s being old money and so the name/family itself holds weight.
Shaggy’s room looks pretty good (Scooby looks AMAZING!! I love him (Thor) sm!!!). It’s artfully messy which is nice. I also like leaning into Shaggy being a little more lackadaisical, with some tardies. I feel he’s definitely the type to run a little late for things. One thing I will say is I feel like the show might be edging toward making Shaggy a little rebellious which is idk. He definitely goes against the grain but I always thought of it more as an “I’m just gonna be me/do my own thing” kinda thing and less of a “I want to break the rules/be different” but maybe my vibes are off and that’s not the intention. We’ll see.
Having Shaggy’s dad be sheriff is nice. I feel like that’s a pretty common trope across teen mystery shows for practical reasons so that’s fine with me, plus it fits with his dad being a policeman in APN.
I don’t know how necessary having Fred be bullied by a group of random jocks is but again, it’s common trope. I will say it feels a little funny to have them not only bully someone immediately after their parents died but also bully them about that??? 😂 uh??
Velma’s first outfit also looks great! Right away, I think the actress (Dayeanne Hutton) might be taking some cues from Cardellini’s portrayal (that’s just my conjecture tho). Having her mom be the owner of a bookstore is cute and will probably be plot convenient later on so. Also her having a dad who’s passed on (and a mom who’s clearly struggling with that) is a nice bit of characterization. I thought Hutton really sold the “we both miss you, dad” line so it didn’t feel super expository.
I don’t love the Riverdale-style objectification of teens. The show is only ten minutes in and already lingered pretty long on Fred being either shirtless/sweaty.
Given the school’s colors, the mascot was definitely in poor taste. Some of the posters hanging up were … yeah 😕. If they’re going to have Fred be in his letterman’s or in school colors often then they should have gone with blue, I think. They may have wanted to distinguish him from the bullies but then I think the mascot would have worked better and matched Fred’s pallet. Being the blue devils would have worked better I think. The school colors do match the Cartoon Network movies pretty close (I think they were red/yellow there while here they seems to be red/white). I’m also partial to alliteration (Coolsville Cougars just sounded so cute 🥺).
Fred’s outfit (blue plaid, white t-shirt, orange backpack) is gorgeous/genius/I love it so much!!! The outfits in this have consistently been on it. Well done wardrobe. Big kudos!! Also love the orange of his notebook and binder as well. Utilize those color pallets!! We love to see it!!
Mmm, Daphne and Fred definitely have history/attraction between them. I’m wondering if, like in SDMI, Fred will be seen as not good enough for Daphne, especially as she (aka her MOM) is very concerned with appearances.
Velma having to steel herself to talk to Fred is so cute (and I like that they’re able to connect over mutual losses). Fred remembering her from geometry is really sweet (and I love the “you’re the one who sat in the back so no one could cheat off your papers” lol). I also like Fred apologizing to her for snapping. I’m so excited to see the rest of the Gang interact because I already feel the chemistry between Fred and Velma. I want them to be friends right now!!! So bad!!!
Okay the “fascinating subject” line Velma/Hutton delivered, perfect inflection on that 10/10 sounds like Velma to a T. I don’t know exactly who Hutton’s taking her inspiration from but I can definitely hear a lot of the former actresses for Velma in her.
Fred calling her “Dinkley” I like that
“My mistress science,” definitely feels like a reference to Velma’s line in Monsters Unleashed about mysteries being her mistress.
oooooooOOOOooo Velma and Fred’s parents being killed by the same mysterious force?? The plot thickens 🤔 I also really like how Fred’s actor (Dade Elza) delivered his line about Velma not being an expert of the grief Fred is feeling.
So far all of Velma’s jinkies have felt really natural. I’m so 🥹
Okay am I crazy is is Velma’s “I panicked” literally Nicole Jaffe??
I kinda wish Velma had been the one to see the demon and not her mom…now that would have been a twist…could even stick with her being more interested in science if you wanted by having her try to convince herself it was nothing only for Fred’s matching vision to make her reconsider.
Fred’s cute little “you’re gonna put that big brain of yours to use to help me solve this thing.” I’m sold on him, very much.
Also forgot to mention that this show continued to place Coolsville in OH. I’m cool with that, at this point that’s the one state that there’s *really* precedent for (tho I’m partial to CA 😜)
Is Fred also wearing orange shoes??!! 🥺
Daphne’s crew with headbands vs Ophelia’s crew with hair clips
Jonathan Jacobo reference HELLO!!! Mmmm instead of being the “Pterodactyl Ghost” tho, he’s a witness to the “Pterodactyl Demon.” Maybe he still dressed up as the Pterodactyl Ghost tho when he went on his crime spree??
Ben Ravencroft reference. Mmmm but the demon in “his movie” is Asmodeus (the demon from Curse of the 13th Ghost).
Fred appealing to Velma in exactly the way she’ll cave to. Love how this show is demonstrating his intelligence so far (as well as possibly foreshadowing his leadership skills) and how well he’ll grow to know the Gang.
Shaggy in a white van. Assuming that will end up being the Mystery Machine!!
I was wondering how they were going to have Scooby “communicate.” Looks like so far they’re having Shaggy just be able to tell what he’s thinking. I’m okay with that (and probably prefer that to him speaking through Scooby a la Kristoff for Sven) but it’ll be interesting to see how that works with the rest of the Gang. I don’t know if I‘d like if Shaggy was the only one who could “understand” him, yk?
JOY JUICE??? As in Lotsa Luck Joy Juice. Okay references for this ep get an A+. That was pretty good.
Talking to Scooby calms Shaggy down 🥺🥺🥺
“Okay, pumpkin.” 😂 ?????
Scooby’s just a gentle little guy. I do think once Shaggy got hit, Scooby could have let out a little growl or smth.
Okay so far Daphne Shaggy and Velma have all uttered their catchphrases. :)
No, no, hold up. Why is Daphne mad about the plan because it might blow back at her? Could they not have had her be outraged that they’re planning on cheating? Or that they don’t think she can win on her own and that she needs to resort to ruining the competition?
OKAY THE BOOK HAVING THE CHEST OF DEMOMS SIGIL ON IT IS SO SICK (it’s not exact but I feel like it’s definitely in imitation of it/Asmodeus!!)
“Hey, Velm” 🥹 Already evolved from Dinkley straight to the more affectionate nicknames
Fred seeing right through Velma, acknowledging she seems afraid of the unknown. Okay, I’m listening.
“I’m beginning to come around to the idea.” Want to kiss this line of dialogue so bad the Scooby vibes are immaculate
FRED BODY SHIELDING VELMA SHUT THE HELL UP. IM !!!!
Seth’s plan is…not great
Scooby Doo is a police dog?? Ehhhhhh, idk bout that one. Also him being “retired” is interesting. I feel like it could have fit that Scooby was initially brought on to be a police dog (even tho I don’t think Great Danes are typically used) but he was too friendly/easily scared so then Sheriff Rogers brought him home to his son to be Shaggy’s companion. Maybe the backstory will end up being similar. The use of retired doesn’t necessarily mean anything, but hmmm
Ahhh, so the ghost was Miner ‘49er. Awesome!!!
13 pillars = 13 ghosts style episodic takedown of the pillars. I’m pumped🙏
I really like Thorn’s necklace and Dusk’s hair. Also LOVE that they’re performing “Hex Girl.”And Thorn’s guitar looks pretty cool.
Oof the way Fred clearly wanted to go after Daphne and had to be set straight by Velma. Damn. Guy just opened a hellmouth but he sees Daph upset and he’s about ready to drop everything else.
Fred w/a plan. ❤️💕
“ You used the name” CUTE 😂
“We’re gonna have to split up…” and BAM everyone in the episode got to say their catchphrase (expect for Scooby) even if Fred’s was just an approximation of his.
Really wish the Hex Girls had fangs 😔
Miner ‘49er does look pretty spooky, I will say, and the climax was done pretty neatly.
Shaggy making his sandwich. 👏 YES
The two posters in the scene with Velma’s mom answering the phone are a French poster for Alfred Hitchcock’s Rear Window and the 1949 film of The Great Gatsby. Not sure if there’s significance/what the significance is but thought I’d mention it in case anyone had any ideas.
Also the subtitles list Velma’s mom as “Angie,” which is her name in SDMI. I could definitely see them taken inspiration from that version of her, given it’s the most in-depth. It also seems they might have take some inspo already, what with both SDMI Angie and this version being interested in/having past experience with the occult and running a business in which the occult is featured.
The voice of Vincent Van Ghoul!!! I’m SCREAMING. I’m actually begging them to let him be the Giles of this Scooby gang.
High Priestess Van Ghoul?? Seems like the Hex Girls are going to be allies in this but we’ll see. Glad they’re letting all of them practice a little witchcraft tho. That’s cool. Ahh and they’re keeping them in their necklaces. Also very cool.
THE BLACK KNIGHT
Really like the end credits song. It sounds great!
Okay, all the parents’ names (as they’re listed in the credits) so far are the same as they are in SDMI except Fred’s parents who were *sob* Peggy (not listed as “Peg”) and Skip. Also?? Shaggy’s dad is listed as Sheriff *Samuel* Rogers. But Daphne’s mom is listed as Nan and Velma’s mom is listed as Angie.
Other Thoughts:
I’m pleasantly surprised that this show is utilizing a lot of the rich lore Scooby Doo has surrounding the supernatural. They’re really rooting themselves in 13 Ghosts and Witch’s Ghost, etc. rather than just inventing new mythos. They’re not wasting the mythos Scooby Doo already has available. It’s really amazing and well-done so far!
I thought this episode was overall super enjoyable. It was unpolished in parts and rougher at the beginning than the end and I can see how it might go off the rails but overall it seems VERY promising and it definitely feels more Scooby Doo-like than I ever expected which is wonderful!!
I think the main actors seem like they’ve got it down. Elza and Hutton as Fred and Velma respectively really shined this episode, which makes sense as I feel they have the most to work with at this point (and the fact that they’re were the only two who were working together). It really gives me hope for how the rest of the cast might interact because you could really feel both the character and actor chemistry between Elza and Hutton. I’m so excited!!!
I really hope the rest of the gang gets involved in the hijinks soon (especially Shaggy as his story seemed the most separate). Chris Villain as Shaggy was solid. I thought he had some good physical moments (like banging his head against the locker) though I will say I didn’t feel like we saw much of Shaggy yet. It makes sense that him and Daphne were a little less themselves since I think the show will go on to highlight the Gang opening themselves up and only really dropping the masks (no pun intended) around each other so I’ll wait before casting further judgement.
It seems Daphne (played by Jessica Chancellor) will be having a pretty extensive character arc as she breaks away from her current clique and expectations to join up with the Gang (yay!).
The wardrobe for the Gang all felt really great. The effects were good. The sets were detailed and appropriate. Overall felt pretty solid for a pilot.
BIG BIG GREAT JOB TO EVERYONE INVOLVED
EDIT (after I forced my whole family to watch 😂):
My mom was saying the dealer selling Joy Juice wearing a yellow hoodie was probably a reference to Flim Flam’s classic look (can’t believe I didn’t catch that!!!)
I noticed that Shaggy walks between Fred&Velma in the hall way and gives Fred the flyer Velma pulls out of his notebook later. Feel so dumb I didn’t catch that the first time 😅

(//Britney Spears Voice// Oops I Did it Again)
I was thinking about Sero having siblings which made me think about class 1a and like,, how few of them have canon siblings? & then I was like “well hmm, who has siblings in canon and who do I feel like SHOULD have siblings?” which has NOW spiraled to “whole family dynamic” so. Here’s this (note that I’m not gonna subtract people from families who already canonically exist like however much I’d like to launch End**v*r into the sun this is less “I rewrote things how I’d like them to be” and more “how many of these kids do I think should have siblings and if their parents aren’t developed what do I think they’re like”).
Midoriya: We already know he does not have siblings and tbh even if we didn’t know I’d still think he doesn’t. He absolutely has Only Child Who’s Kinda Lonely And Wanted A Sibling But Never Got One vibes. Also we know he has a single mom and a dad who’s not really in the picture (sidenote I love Inko Midoriya even though she failed Izuku in the past by not believing in him she loves her son so much and is trying her hardest to make up for it and do what’s best for him). I feel like her husband is like,,, not straight up the worst person ever like he’s not abusive but he’s not particularly interested in his family anymore?? Like he pays his child support but doesn’t make any effort to talk to his wife and son? He’d get divorced but he doesn’t want to go through the hassle of that legal process, especially since he’s living on a whole separate continent & would either have to go back to Japan for the legal proceedings or do it from there which would be challenging & he’s “far too busy” to do that
Bakugou: He doesn’t have siblings in canon but he does kinda give off Middle Child In A House With Lots Of Children vibes...that inferiority/superiority complex tho...oh either that or Oldest Child In A House With Lots Of Children vibes...but yeah consider middle child Bkg. Like...maybe 5-6 Bakugou children and he’s either smack dab in the middle or 3rd oldest depending if he has 4 or 5 siblings. Also it’s pretty obvious that Mitsuki’s not a good mom & Masaru is not rlly willing to stand up to her but unfortunately I can’t change that cause I said I wouldn’t mess with existing family members :/ maybe I shouldn’t give him more siblings after all, for their sake...
Todoroki: We know the todofam dynamic already. Tbh idk what kinda vibes he’d give me if I didn’t already know he had siblings, but since I know that he has siblings in canon it makes sense that he’s a youngest child (also sidenote I LOVE the Todorokisibs & I want them to have the time to bond and become like,,, real, close siblings. Also #givereiadivorce2k20). I hope someone yeets Endumpster out of existence one of these days...fingers crossed
Iida: It’s canon that he has a brother and it’s so sweet how much he admires and loves him Iida ily. Again it makes sense that he’s a youngest child; his need to be “worthy of” his brother’s legacy is rlly apparent, & feels like a total youngest sibling trait. Tbh if I didn’t know he had a brother I could also see him as an only child but I’m glad he has Tensei. I feel like his parents are hardworking but make sure to make time for their children as much as they can & make sure they know they’re loved. Iida kinda also considers some of the heroes/sidekicks who work at the Idaten agency family since they’ve been around so much during his childhood & he knows them pretty well. Also since Tensei is friends with Aizawa and Yamada they were definitely Tenya’s babysitters at least a couple times & around the house a lot so he considers them kinda like uncles or something
Uraraka: I know she doesn’t have siblings in canon but it feels like she should. She gives off big sister vibes. Like she’s canonically becoming a hero for her parents, and I think that would be even better if she also had siblings (all younger than her. At least 2 siblings, maybe 3). I want to see Uraraka with siblings @ Horikoshi why did you deprive us of this? Also we know her parents work hard and love her which I love I’m so glad SOMEONE in class 1a canonically has 2 good supportive parents
Tsuyu: We already know she has two siblings and yes she also has Big Sister Vibes. Don’t have much to explain abt this one, she’s just mature and dependable in like the Older Sister Specific Way (not that all older sisters are mature and dependable, just that there’s a kind of mature and dependable that directly comes from being an older sister specifically). I feel like her parents love her and her siblings & taught them to be truthful & stuff but are kinda quiet and reserved with their affection, and they’re often busy with their jobs so Tsuyu had to take on some extra responsibility caring for her siblings
Yaoyorozu: She’s an only child and yeah, it makes sense. Her parents only have one child to focus on, and as such it’s pretty obvious she feels the full pressure of their expectations, giving her pretty obvious Only Child Vibes. Although I guess you could also look at it as youngest child vibes cause I could just as easily see her having a bunch of talented successful older siblings/one Really Talented Older Sibling so she feels the pressure in following in their footsteps (think either Daphne from scooby doo mystery incorporated or Tahani Al-Jamil from the good place except she doesn’t necessarily hate/resent her siblings but is just kinda insecure about her “worth” compared to them. This is where the second guessing she suddenly displays in canon could come in - correct me if I’m wrong but she didn’t rlly show signs of second-guessing herself until the sports festival? So she’s fine in class where nobody rlly knows her but once she’s at the sports festival which is nationally televised she starts to doubt herself because her parents and sister(s) are watching & she’s like “oh no what if my sister(s) would be better than me at this” so that’s why she suddenly loses confidence). I kinda implied before but I feel like her parents are pretty strict & have high expectations for her & while they’re not needlessly cruel, they won’t tolerate less than the best
Jirou: Pretty sure she has no siblings in canon BUT she TOTALLY gives off youngest sibling vibes. I’m thinking she’d have like a cool older brother who likes to embarrass her. Her parents are pretty chill (I think that part’s kinda canon?). She has lots of older cousins who she’s pretty close with and one bad*ss lesbian aunt who’s pretty much her role model (Jirou when she was younger: I wanna be just like my aunt!!! Jirou now: ah. That’s why. I also like girls.)
Kirishima: Again I’m pretty sure he doesn’t have siblings in canon and as for whether I think he gives off sibling vibes??? I’m not entirely sure. I was gonna say I don’t think so cause like. He gives off vibes that he’d be good with siblings but doesn’t actually have them, kinda like Midoriya (but like,,,I also kinda want to give him siblings so I’m not sure). Also you know that fandom headcanon that he has 2 moms? Yeah I love that that’s canon you can’t convince me otherwise. He has 2 moms and they both love him so much & wanna support him however they can (also I kinda put a little thought into them for a fic I started writing and decided that they’re the embodiment of the tattoo parlor/flower shop au. Flower mom keeps some arrangements that are...not necessarily professional in her shop because her wife arranged them for her. Tattoo mom gives flower mom tattoos for free & they have matching tattoos that flower mom designed)
Koda: he gives me Could Have Siblings vibes as in he kinda feels like another middle child but I feel like he’s actually an only child (like he probably is in canon? I think). His parents are quiet like him but they definitely love him and he knows it. He’s really close to his grandparents (who also live with his family) as well. He also, quits predictably, has a lot of animal friends who are kind of like family to him cause they’ve been through a lot together (the Koda family household sometimes looks a little bit like a zoo because 3 people in it have talking-to-animal-related quirks)
Sato: another idk about canon but he has a little sister. I cannot tell you why I think this but he definitely has a little sister. Sato you have been diagnosed with Big Brother Energy. Also he totally has a single dad who owns a bakery which is how Sato knows how to bake so well! They’re not poor but they’re not rich and he hopes to send some of his paycheck to support his family & help his dad expand the bakery. It wasn’t the primary reason he became a hero (that was because a hero once saved his little sister from a burning building & he decided that he wanted to be able to save people like that hero had saved his sister), but he does like the benefit of the paycheck
Tokoyami: tbh my first instinct was no siblings but I think it would be really funny if he had like. 3 really preppy siblings (one older than him two younger) & he was the only goth one in his family. Or like. His dad is also goth but his mom & other siblings r super preppy. He loves them all but is very much introverted and he and his dad are closer than the rest bc they kinda bond over being less energetic. His siblings & mom don’t REALLY understand Tokoyami’s goth-ness but they love and support him anyways. His younger siblings lowkey like Dark Shadow maybe even more than him tho. Dark Shadow was pretty sad when he heard they’d be moving to the dorms because he would miss them
Kaminari: tbh I first thought he had only child vibes (he kinda does) but then I decided that he has siblings but their age gaps are pretty significant. His older sister has just gotten out of university and is working and his younger sister is like...7 maybe. His siblings both love him but the age gaps between them make it hard for them to connect sometimes. Anyways I feel like his parents are pretty neglectful & caught up in their work. They don’t really pay attention to him or his other siblings, so his older sister had to learn things like cooking and cleaning and do a lot of taking care of Kaminari and he had to help take care of his younger sister, especially after his older sister went to uni. His parents just assumed he’d come to work at their electric company but he didn’t want to do that so while he definitely wants to save people a big part of his desire to become a hero is to make real connections and prove to his parents that he’s worthy of love and attention. He took the UA exam without telling them and when they found out they would have told him no except that they figured the exposure of their son going to the top hero school in Japan would give them more business. When he moved to the dorms he missed his sisters but was glad he didn’t have to be the main caretaker of his little sister anymore (his parents hired a nanny, which they hadn’t wanted to do before because of how much money it would cost, but because they had in fact gotten more business due to Denki going to UA they had a little more money now). (The nanny and Denki’s sister became fast friends, a fact of which he was glad because it meant he wasn’t leaving her alone in an empty house. He called and visited his sister as often as possible)
Hagakure: honestly I’m pretty sure she’s an only child in canon and she DOES give off only child vibes I think...unlike Midoriya tho I don’t think she’d be particularly bothered by it? I mean I feel like she’s kinda lonely but that’s less about lack of siblings & more bc of lack of people seeing her. But her parents rlly care about her & support her however they can, & they also understand her bc they’re invisible too so they know how it feels to have to work hard to be noticed when you can’t exactly be seen
Aoyama: either both his siblings are way older than him or he’s an only child. He does not give me “is super close with his siblings” vibes. He’s definitely seen as the baby in the family and not in a “he gets away with everything & is the parents’ favorite” way in the “they think he’s kinda a failure” way. His siblings look down on him, his mom pities him because he was the only one to inherit her quirk, which hurts to use, & his dad kinda doesn’t rlly care about him one way or the other. The family gives me pretty rich vibes. Like not as rich as the Yaoyorozus/Iidas/Todorokis but still pretty rich. He went to UA mostly because he wants to get stronger both so that his mom can stop pitying/worrying about him and so that the rest of his family won’t look down on him anymore
Ojirou: l also think he has a few siblings (like...no more than 2 tho). I think younger siblings, he’s also a character with big brother energy (tho I could also see middle child Ojirou). His mom runs a dojo which is part of the reason why he’s so good at martial arts. His dad is an artist. They’re pretty close and love and respect each other. His parents were surprised but supportive when he announced he wanted to go to UA
Ashido: an only child. Her parents love her a lot & make sure she feels supported. She sometimes wishes she had siblings but not super often because she has tons of good friends (this along with Kirishima being an only child who wants siblings sometimes only makes their brotp more epic)!! Also she still keeps in close touch with her civilian friends from middle school but kinda feel disconnected from them sometimes because they’re living such different lives than her. Like they’ll talk about the latest movie and ask her if she’s seen it and she just says no and kinda laugh it off because she can’t just say “no, I wanted to but villains tried to kill my class the day we were planning to go”. She also has a hard time telling her parents that because she knows they’d be super worried about her and she really wants to be a hero!
Sero: has siblings (is somewhere in the middle) and also a huge extended family!!! Before the dorms he lived with his mom and siblings but his extended family lived really close to them and visited all the time so he’s really close to both sets of grandparents and his many aunts and uncles and little cousins (though he’s a middle child in his immediate family he’s one of the oldest cousins). Though he misses his family he sees them as often as he can, and is kinda glad for how chaotic and loud the dorms can be sometimes because it reminds him of his home
Shoji: has a little brother, a mom, and a step-dad. It took a while for him to get used to his step-dad, but it becomes clear that he really loves his family so now Shoji loves him too and is fairly close to him. Shoji’s little brother is adopted because there were complications with his mom’s pregnancy when she was having Mezo and while he turned out fine, they found out that it would be risky for his mom to attempt to get pregnant again. His little brother also has a mutation quirk (though it’s not Dupli Arms it’s Bear) and Shoji loves him more than anything else in the world. He wants to become a hero to help combat the stigma around certain mutation quirks (Gang Orca once canonically kinda addressed that that exists when he talked about how children are always afraid of him bc of how he looks) so that the world will be better for people like him and his brother. His mom and stepdad wholeheartedly support him
M*neta: Only doing this bc my brain will not shut up & is making me analyze all of 1a even the ones I don’t consider 1a. I hope he doesn’t have siblings so less people have to be exposed to his...m*neta-ness but tbh I could see him having siblings. His parents are busy and either don’t notice or don’t care what a terrible person their son is
Better purple boy who deserves a place in 1a way more than the grape Shinsou: has no siblings but gives off IMMENSE big brother vibes. Definitely grew up in the foster system (his biological mother, who was a single mother and also had a mind control quirk, became a villain because she couldn’t get hired anywhere, had no way to support her son, and was tired of being villainized by society so she was like “ok you want a villain? Bet.” When Shinsou was like 7, his mom was killed while trying to flee a crime scene. Since Shinsou had no other parent, he was then put into the foster system. Nobody adopted him because everyone thought he was going to become a villain like his mom had, and even the people who didn’t know his mom thought his quirk was “villainous”). Aizawa and Yamada are now eventually planning to adopt him. He kinda has similar vibes to Midoriya in regards to the “Only Child Who’s Kinda Lonely And Wanted A Sibling” but unlike Midoriya he would NEVER admit he wanted a sibling. “I like being alone” he insists. He is a lying liar. However as soon as he meets Eri they instantly connect & he kinda becomes like a big brother to her even tho he will deny it until Eri herself calls him her brother. When this happens he will cry even tho he will say he didn’t

Call me a mad woman, but seeing Judy touch Ricky in Wrath of the Krampus made me kinda ship them! There was also Gates of Gloom, where Ricky was getting poisoned by Pericles and both Brad and Judy looked concerned! Maybe they were regretting letting Pericles almost kill Ricky! In that episode and onward, Ricky also kind of gets in on the married arguments. Also, Shaggy implies he has a crush on Daphne in Night Terrors. Sure the Mystery gangs aren’t completely alike from each other, but what if that applies to Ricky? Maybe Ricky and Judy had a thing for each other in their teens and that caused problems for Mystery Incorporated since Brad is into Judy and Cassidy is into Ricky! Sure Ricky x Cassidy is my OTP, but Ricky and Judy could be pretty cute as well! Ricky is a grumpy goth who keeps to himself, while Judy is a preppy fashionista who’s a ray of sunshine! Ricky is book smart while Judy is street smart. I’ve always liked that dynamic whether platonic or romantic! In my headcanon, whenever Brad and Judy are separated and talking to some else, they still expect the other person to finish their sentences since they’re not used to being separated from each other. It would be cute to see a comic where Judy is talking to Ricky and she expects him to finish her sentences, but he gets really confused! Also, Brad’s reaction in the picture is hilarious!

Punk Fashion
Walking around Salford, litter is abundant. Dirty plastic bottles, glass shards, sunbleached crisp packets seemingly punctuate every street corner, providing a rather unhealthy view to anyone from the outside world. I’ve garnered some sense of appreciation for the recycling of materials in my artwork, even before starting this course I collected a large bag of scraps and rubbish I intended to use sometime, but I have an appreciation for some finer, unconventional materials that are more difficult to come by. As well as my pretentious taste in rubbish I find that there isn’t anything new or interesting I could do with these plastic scraps and whatever could be produced will automatically be stapled with an instant environmental message (something I’d rather avoid).
I wanted to look to more unexplored avenue of sculpture, something to utilize the prime resources of while keeping a level of perpendicularity to the history and pyschogeography of the place itself and being an unexplored creative front for myself. I have dabbled with sculpture recently in the past with some experimentation into wood and metal and a large focus on clay, but I look back at those works without the fondest of eyes. All I recall was a reliance on the exact, an overemphasis on measurements and rules which ultimately stifled a lot of my creative output. And not to mention my dislike of the solid sculpture, a large, cumbersome object restricted to a plinth, it personally bores me and I’d much rather explore a more fluid and transient material, something mouldable and breakable that I can push limits with. I was led to the soft sculpture for its adaptable and heavily malleable properties, but the question still remained what my soft sculptures would be.
While thinking I was brought back to my first dérive where I spotted something early on in a small grassy clearing adjacent to a closed Inn. A heavily damp and muddy t-shirt. To be specific it was a Versus Versace Graffiti Print T-Shirt in white, featuring the words ‘VERSUS’ scrawled and layered with each other over and over again in a style similar to graffiti, although presented with less consideration and skill as a spray-paint bomb and rather with an abandon and scathing sense of malice. The piece of clothing, along with many other pieces in the Versus collection also feature a sense of DIY style and rugged anti-everything, a punk style for all intents and purposes.
And then it sparked.
I was in Salford, a city deeply rooted within the entire punk movement, it presented itself as a perfect opportunity to explore one of the most outward elements in the punk hemisphere, the fashion. When it comes to the fashion of pop culture, not many have been as bold, innovative and long-lasting as the punk style, spanning decades, splintering into multiple avenues and having influences deep in the skin of modern day designer fashion and streetwear. Somewhat ironic since it began as an outstanding rejection of the excessive, elaborate and ultimately materialistic apparel in the 70’s rock and disco scene or the deemed ‘boring and safe’ mass produced fashion of the forming corporate high street labels for a much cheaper yet still somewhat elaborate style spawned from the punks themselves, a collection of rejects, losers, rebels and individuals that instead of trying to blend with the wider society, sought to pull away and build a vast anti-establishment motif that followed in their music, literature, art and, of course, their fashion.
One of my main interest in the fashion is their resourcefulness and do-it-yourself culture, how they take items that are usually associated with different and opposing subcultures and assimilate them into their own pieces, a repurposing of what they could. This ideology was described by photographer Chrissy Piper who was a young adult throughout the later stages of the punk movement and made a name for herself photographing the underground hardcore scene in the 1990’s who said: “Repurposing a lot of things… wearing a lot of clothes that had been my mother’s or my aunt’s and when those didn’t fit or weren’t going to be turning them into something else… mixing 1950’s and 1960’s style and maybe even getting nerdier than most people would.”
A prominent example of this is their adoption of the 1460 Dr. Marten boots, a boot originally designed to be durable and yet comfortable for the everyday workman and for a time after its original release of April 1st 1960, it was readily adopted by members of the British Northern working class such as postman, factory workers and even police officers. The influence of the ‘DM’ trickled down the generations of the working class, eventually finding itself at the feet of working class youth who understood its intimidating profile and used it as an unofficial symbol to instil a working class pride within themselves. The first generation of skinhead culture faded during the later stages of the 1970’s, but their message of alternative values rang into the birthing punk culture, and as a result, the 1460 found a new home on the feet of many punks who found the ugly, intimidating figures and resounding booms they produced to represent perfectly the non-conformist attitudes they held. But the consumption of other cultural fashion symbols didn’t stop at skinheads, as the movement developed into a palpable subculture they began incorporating other scraps of other and sometimes even opposing cultures. Many female punks sought to upturn typical ideas of femininity through semi-humorous juxtaposition by pairing clothing with feminine connotations such as a ballerina’s tutu with a more defiant and conventionally masculine piece, such as a pair of leather bovver boots, a representation of a rebellious mind-set against the dominant ideology paired with striking ingenuity and understanding of the subversive. Another example during the early steps was the inclusion of blazers as a statement piece, usually associated with the idea of a preppy public school type, what many would consider an antithesis to the punk. Yet, once again with a level of dexterous flair they utilized second-hand or purchased their own cheap blazers and with the inclusion of offensive colours, vulgar patches, painted slogans, drawn designs, lavatory chains, bin liners, and the signature safety pins, creating their own signature, non-replicable pieces as a display of individuality.
And it’s this that I want to focus on, the unique nature and construction of their clothes, during a time where capitalist economics were at their height under the fear of the Cold War, when monetarism kept the British market on a tight leash and the trickle-down economics of Reagan allowed companies to produce clothing en masse, the punk subculture adopted a DIY ethic, utilising the leftovers, hand-me-downs and scrap they could to create signatures to themselves, expressions of individuality amongst turbulence, and as I see the littered rags and forgotten clothes on the streets of Salford I figure that this exploration of creating individual pieces of art, because I see what the punks created to be art, outward thoughts created by hands to express and garner emotions from their viewers.
During some ‘micro-dérives’ I began collecting old clothes abandoned on roads, scrap heaps, parks, and pretty much wherever I could find them, as well as other fragments of fabrics or trinkets I thought could be utilized in my clothing. Using these as my metaphorical paints and a selection of tapes, pins, needles, strings and a large spool of nylon fishing wire I worked into the bodies of these garments, stitching, stapling, pinning, scrawling, and tying until I had built two individual outfits as part of what I like to perceive as a fashion line of sorts. Granted my knowledge of formal stitch methods is limited and when I began my project I thought I would rely heavily on a sewing machine, but I figured I would instead rely on my inept hands to create them instead as I think my informal and clumsy stitching would show a better representation of the similar designs present in the punk fashion, after all, most punks were not formally trained either and relied heavily on pins and tapes to hold their clothes together. Due to my amateur hands I do not expect my works to hold up under stress, but despite appearances and general ideas, they are not solely meant to be worn.
I personally believe that is the beauty of the soft sculpture as opposed to the more moulded and constructed works of metal, stone, wood and plastic, especially with cloth where a sense of fluidity is added, not just in the aesthetic but in the all-important display. Whereas most hard sculptures are confined to few methods of display, the possibilities with cloth are much more appealing, it can be hung, draped, dropped, folded, stretched, bunched, twisted, and in the case of my work, worn. However I have not attached myself to this work enough to actually physically wear them myself, after all I found them on the street and most are still dirty and some even present with mould, which is why I have incorporated the help of Daphne, an old shop front dummy and a possession of my father’s. Originally belonging to one of my father’s ex-girlfriends Helen Knox (who worked as a tour manager for both the Rolling Stones and Morrisey) who found her in a skip outside Rackhams, a large department store outside Royal Leamington Spa, my hometown. It resided at her flat in Whitnash, a small town near Leamington and at some point, Daphne transitioned from Helen’s possession to my father’s before he married my mother and raised me, from there it followed me to Leamington, my childhood town of Leek and now briefly here, to Salford. Daphne has always been a prominent feature in my childhood homes and I always saw her decorated with the retired youth clothes of my mother and father, from the heavily customised Tank Girl-esque denim shorts of my mother to the more leather-heavy rocker apparel of my father, in that way she has always been a punk icon to me, with a history of Rock ‘n’ Roll in her plastic veins and a reminder of its sensibilities and style decades after it’s diminishment. Now she serves to fill the void of the clothes I have found, a place holder for those who saw fit to dump their garments, in that way a connection has fostered between the two, both discarded for unknown reasons and now given a purpose.
During my work with the clothes I have often wondered why they have been left. This has always been a question of mine, whenever I have seen a lone shoe, or especially with the Versace t-shirt I found muddied, I am drawn to wonder what mind-set must the person be in to leave them on the floor, are they simply forgotten there, thrown out or something else? To me clothes are precious and not to be wasted, they are expressions of ourselves, our outsides in, if you will. With most of the clothes I have found, I must come to the conclusion that they are simply thrown out, old or unstylish items ripped or ruined and deemed obsolete, but for some reason instead of being put in the bin, they have been left on the street. In this way they are an addition of Salford’s littered streets, a permanent mark on the concrete and itself an extension of the scum, which is exactly why I have made them part of my project, they themselves have ingrained into Salford. They might be considered a mockery or a statement, but I have simply just captured my reaction to Salford through Salford itself, much like how the punks of London, New York and Belfast have captured their environment in their clothes, I have done similar here.
