Alfonso XIII: The only monarch to have been nominated for a Nobel Prize

During World War I, because of his family connections with both sides and the division of popular opinion, Spain remained neutral. The King established an office for assistance to prisoners of war on all sides. This office used the Spanish diplomatic and military network abroad to intercede for thousands of POWs – transmitting and receiving letters for them, and other services. The office was located in the Royal Palace. His efforts with the European War Office during World War I, earned him a nomination on the Nobel Peace Prize in 1917, which was ultimately won by the Red Cross.

Alfonso XIII attempted to save the Russian Tsar Nicholas II and his family from the Bolsheviks who captured them, sending two telegrams offering the Russian royal family refuge Spain. He later learned of the execution of the Romanov family, but was mistaken and believed that only Nicholas II and his son Alexi were killed. As such, he continued to push for the Tsaress Alexandra and her four daughters to be brought to Spain, not having realized that they were also murdered.

Alfonso XIII recibía muchas cartas de personas de otros países que le pedían ayuda para buscar a sus familiares desaparecidos durante la Guerra. Algunos habían sido hechos prisioneros, otros estaban en hospitales y otros no aparecerían nunca. Impresionado por la cantidad de ayuda pedida, el rey hizo instalar una oficina en una de las salas del Palacio Real, donde varias personas se dedicaron exclusivamente a la localización de prisioneros de los distintos bandos y a posibilitar su repatriación. Se llamó a este grupo Oficina Pro Cautivos y colaboraron con la Cruz Roja Internacional, aunque en muchos casos fue el rey directamente quien tomó cartas en el asunto contactando a los mandatarios de los diferentes países. Hay constancia de que telegrafió a los embajadores de París, Viena, Londres, Berlín, Roma, Petrogrado, Constantinopla, Bucarest, Sofia y La Haya reclamando canje de prisioneros. La oficina real tuvo que ampliar su plantilla hasta las 48 personas a las que se les requería fundamentalmente el dominio de idiomas.

También intentaron la liberación del zar de Rusia Nicolás II y su familia, que habían sido apresados por los bolcheviques en Ekaterimburgo. Alfonso XIII ofrecía que se pudieran exiliar a España. El rey español fue uno de los primeros en enterarse del asesinato del zar y de su hijo varón, no así de la zarina y de sus hijas. Por eso, volvió a insistir, pensando que las mujeres vivían, en traerlas a España.

Muchas personas no pudieron ser encontradas o rescatadas, pero finalmente se logró ayudar a 122.000 prisioneros franceses y belgas, 7.950 ingleses, 6.350 italianos, 400 portugueses, 350 americanos y 250 rusos. Se pudieron repatriar 21.000 prisioneros enfermos y a unos 70.000 civiles atrapados en territorios ocupados por el enemigo. Se realizaron 4.000 visitas a campos de concentración. Todo este empeño fue pagado por Alfonso XIII de su fortuna personal. Y constancia quedó también de que su mediación fue fundamental para levantar el cerco de alimentos a Bélgica, donde nueve millones personas pudieron ser alimentadas porque el rey intercedió para que las provisiones de Estados Unidos pudiesen llegar a la población. En un viaje que el rey Alfonso y la reina Victoria Eugenia hicieron a Bélgica en 1923, recibieron el homenaje de los miles de personas que se habían beneficiado de su ayuda.

My Policeman shooting is WRAPPED, for real this time it seems; both the book’s author and Emma Corrin said so, plus Harry was seen leaving Venice. Emma posted some real cute set pics with Harry and others (and edited herself into the end of shoot pics from Venice, HA). As mentioned, Harry was seen wrapping up his stay in Venice, and I do mean SEEN- with a huge crowd of fans on hand there are about one million pics of him loading his bags onto the boat and being motored away. He waved to the crowds and said hi and all that, and took a couple close up fan pics (but how did those particular fans out of so many get so lucky? by breaking into his hotel grounds, that’s how :/) and signed (and dated) some stuff. He looked real cute in white trousers and shoes and a very cool vintage-y shirt with his beloved blue bandana sticking out of the shirt pocket. Also in his hotel (but as paying guests, one assumes), Orlando Bloom and Katy Perry- Harry was seen hanging out in the hotel restaurant with them and playing with their wee tiny baby!

The Lonely Bug NFT sales are also a wrap (I think?? Still vague on the fine details of many parts of this operation...) At the very least we know that the fanciest of Liam’s 6 NFT packages (which included the dinner invite and other things) concluded its auction and it went for $122k! We don’t get to see Liam’s live reaction to the final number though, as that video was one of the things they were selling as an exclusive, but Liam posted a little video thanking everyone for everything throughout the big sale. He seems happy but anticlimactic for us huh? Will the big spenders who now own the art and rights to it show us more or simply hoard it like intangible toilet paper in a theoretical pandemic, I guess only time will tell. Whether or not they share, we certainly haven’t heard the last of the Lonely Bug hype, as they will be adding more extras for the buyers of the tokens they sold and so forth, including possibly selling toys of the bug according to Liam.
