well maybe you don't need to talk about everything that happened but some important stuff like lfc winning the league (and united finishing 3rd, which might have been... unexpected) or marcus working really hard to help the children and sending emails and making lots phone calls and being busy and trent hanging around him and watching him work/advising him a bit if marcus ask and being proud of him

45. Rubbing the back of their hand with a thumb.
There’s a thrumming under Trent’s skin, constant and loud and he can barely breathe.
They’d lost games before, premier league, champions league, random league cups Trent tried harder to care about. They’ve been on a slump lately though, and it’s starting to wear on him. Each bad cross replays in his head, each time a striker gets past him he watches it, over and over on twitter while scrolling through the comments blaming him.
This one is just the icing on the cake. He barely sticks around after the game, rushes home in a taxi with Robbo where they sit in silence, shoulder to shoulder with red rimmed eyes and tired faces that are louder than any words they could say.
Trent slumps out of the taxi first when they stop at his house and he and Robbo stare at each other in silence for a second. He wishes he’d taken the taxi with Hendo, who would have known what to say, or Ox who would have cracked a joke. Robbo just stares back at him, no answer or reprieve on his face. The happy birthday Trent offers him feels redundant now.
The house is calm when he walks in, the lights are low and he can hear the quiet hum of the television from the living room, the quiet patter of the dogs in the kitchen.
He follows the sound of the dogs, slides down to the floor as soon as he walks in to let Prince crawl over his lap. “Hey boy,” he murmurs quietly, scratching behind his ears and letting him crawl all over him.
The thrumming under his skin hasn’t stopped and the queasiness in his stomach has come back full force and the sound of footsteps approaching make his eyes sting and he swallows it down, ignores it and focuses on the dog jumping all over him.
Ben walks over silently, slides down next to him and presses his shoulder against Trent’s without a word. A few minutes pass before he reaches over and takes Trent’s hand, thumb brushing lightly across the back of his hand.
Trent closes his eyes, swallows around the lump again and drops his head onto Ben’s shoulder.
“The positive is -”
“Don’t.”
“You could have-”
“No.”
Ben lets out a harsh breath, his hand momentarily tightening around Trent’s. “You didn’t play badly you-”
“Do you want to sleep on the couch?” Trent snaps, lifting his head so he can properly glare at Ben, even in the dark. Ben will be able to feel it.
Ben stares back at him and Trent can only just make out his eyes, but it’s enough. His glare softens and he presses their foreheads together, “Extra time was dead awful though. This is the worst night.”
"I ordered your favourite dinner,” Ben replies instead of trying to disagree.
Trent swallows down another lump in his throat and shuffles closer to rest his head on Ben’s shoulder again. “Okay. Not the worst night.”

9. Have they made each other cry?
Yes. The first time wasn’t actually as serious as all the other times they made each other cry. The first time they were on their first dinner-date at Marcus’ house and were rushing around each other so nervously that Trent dropped a large pot of pasta sauce on Marcus’s foot. It hurt so much he cried in the bathroom so Trent wouldn’t see.

In private, Marcus never stops complimenting Trent’s kindness and Trent always tells Marcus how supportive and sweet he is.
8. What were their first impressions of each other?
As we know, they hated each other. Both homegrown stars of rival teams, they didn’t even bother saying hello at the first england training.
15. What are traits they dislike in one another?Marcus gets sick of Trent’s competitiveness, literally everything is a competition. Trent wishes Marcus wouldn’t be so forgiving when his friends get him in bad situations.
21. How have they changed each other for the better/for the worse?
Trent is still competitive but he cares about winning less, does his best to just enjoy whatever they’re doing and now he’s better at picking himself up after a loss.
Marcus fights for himself more. He used to just go with whatever was happening because it was easier, now he fights for what he deserves.

8. What were their first impressions of each other?
Ben couldn’t stand Trent. He was the scouser, the local boy, the star. Took every shot, took every free kick and he played dirty, he’d kick, he’d push and he was such a brat when he lost.
Trent thought Ben was so painfully shy that he felt like he had to help him so he’d go out of his way to sit with him at lunch and pick him to be his partner and thought the only reason Ben would make a face was cause he’d rather be alone. It wasn’t until Ben got hurt one day on the pitch and Trent spent the whole time holding his hand till the medic came over, then sprinted to the medical room after to spend the whole of lunch with him, that Ben started to see Trent differently.

Morning. They’re usually too tired in the evenings after training and on the weekends without games they like their lazy mornings in bed.

17. What senses (sights, smells, feelings, etc). remind them of each other?
Sights:
Red. Marcus associates Trent with red and he’s surrounded by red all day, and he loves that. He loves that he’s constantly reminded of Trent, not that he ever forgets about him (except when they’re in a fight).
Smells:
Smells is a big one for Trent, the smell of the football field, the smell of his house. Marcus has a cologne that he’s used since Trent met him and it smells like papaya and fresh grass, and just the smell of it makes Trent feel warm and safe inside.
