it really has to make me giggle (otherwise id be frustrated to no end) how clearly it becomes visible in fandom how bleak of an outlook on love and affection many people have. just saw a post say the person is sad Edwin didnt get anyone by the end of the season and that they want Edwin to be loved. Charles literally said he loves him! Goes to show that anything thats not picture perfectly romantic does not count for shit in this worldview that prioritized romantic love as the be all end all, and also if youre not loved romantically youre not loved at all. Idk i dont really have a point outside of seeing all these amatonormative/arophobic beliefs embedded in the convo about the show isnt really new (fandom tends to be like that) but it makes me sad and frustrated

What I Want to See in HBH S3!⋆·˚ ༘ *
note that this is a list not to be mistaken as things i expect to see in s3
the introduction of a new trans character !
the introduction of a new character who will have a cutesy and fun lovey storyline for quinni <33
harthony uno reverse card—harper starts to realize she has feelings for ant but is scared to confess bc she's still dealing w her trauma and doesnt want to lose him
ant main storyline !! we find out a lot more about his home life (this is for the bitches w religious trauma, it's me im bitches) and find out what his ethnic background is bc i realized that ive been assuming he's wasian this whole time but it's never actually been said
i miss a parent-child storyline actually (like darren and their dad had in s1). i think quinni would be great for this
chook in jail jfc
sasha home life—could be redemption, could be not. im chill either way, i kinda enjoy getting annoyed at her (just no more ableism pls). if she does get redemption tho could she pls tap into more of her succulent chinese meal, dinussy side like she is so hilarious when she's not being a performative activist lmao
less spider screentime im sorry like hurrayy he's been redeemed but i want to highlight the other characters now
missy&darren storyline. i dont even know what kind of storyline but i just feel like theyd be so entertaining together constantly roasting people
verbally canonizing that ant and harper are queer/pan (established) and spider's demi (new revelation)
ca$h/darren & missy/spider double date could be fun and random. maybe they bump into each other at a carnival or smthn and compete against each other at ring toss idk
another classic hbh mystery to be solved BUT THIS TIME, amerie isn't a main character of it
✧˚ ·the entire main group doing karaoke✧˚ ·
A few more thoughts...
i miss malakai already but i think it would be too narratively convenient for him to come back at the start of the season so i dont want to have any expectations for his (and the amerie/malakai) storyline. imma let the writers take me wherever they want me to go
what i dont want to see is a new love interest for my amerie like i feel bad for the new plot device dressed as a white blond boy that will be tossed away once the amerkai endgame is done cooking
no more darren&quinni angst no more darren&quinni angst no more darren&quinni angst no more darren&quinni angst 😭
what i want to hear in a new season of hbh is some chappell roan like imagine HOT TO GO! playing in hbh it would be amazing

Two of the things I really enjoyed about heartbreak high that i haven’t seen talked about a lot are
1.) the artistic element of it
i feel like these days a lot of shows are kinda shot/edited/visually displayed as the bare minimum. in fact one of the reasons why i cross-stitch while watching most tv is because i feel like i’m not missing much. it’s either the bare minimum, or it’s very, like…artistically pretentious. like oooh slow shots and the curtain is blue, you just wouldn’t get it.
but with hbh, it’s a very visually appealing show for all the right reasons, from the shots to lighting to expression. two things that come to mind in that are—
1.) the “missy dreams about spider” scene.
in doing that they could have just had her have a regular dream about spider, in any other way—though instead they went with the dark kinda gritty setting, the spy concept with the ropes & the eight-handed spider—it makes sense for how a person might actually dream with all those thoughts in their subconscious, and it just makes a more interesting watch
2.) the “quinni interrogating sasha” scenes.
same as before, they could have played these out in full color, but instead we get the black and white and old film style, immersing the viewer into her world to see how passionately she feels about the investigation
& honestly both of these visual shifts make sense for the overall show since it’s no stranger to darker themes. it has a lot of comedic moments but also a lot of depth that really stands out due to the visual choices
2.) queer characters have storylines not defined by their queerness
screaming crying sliding down the wall, that’s all I’ve wanted since i was in middle school
of course, i know that everything that came before was necessary to get to this point—I’m not going to pretend that the decades of queer history & queer expression in media is pointless because “they could have been doing this the whole time 🤪” ofc not. But i will say, as much as Ive loved the “figuring out your sexuality/coming out” arc because it leads to more representation, im glad we’ve gotten to this point. That element is still there ofc (ex: malakai and the hot dogs scene lol), it just feels a lot more “let’s cut to the chase there’s bigger fish to fry” which just feels a lot more inviting and interesting and, well, provides more depth to the show.

I think spider and ant are really good representation of healthy close male relationships! Like it doesn't have to be romantic they clearly show their love to each other whether it's platonic or not and I think it's really good to have close male friendships like theirs because it's so much more stigmatized for two guys to hug and cuddle than it is for two girls. Like 2 girls cuddle and hug and be physically close and they're just really good friends but if 2 guys brush shoulders they're gay for each other and dating. So even if nothing romantic happens between them in S3, I feel like I'm happy with how they're portrayed because it's good to have male friends that are comfy around each other!
(i do want them to kiss tho)

ant was literally trying to run to find harper but spider pushed him out of there when everyone was running outside 😭😭
Every male character has sucked ASS this season.
Also notice how none of them ran into the building to save Amerie and Harper.

Harper McLean + Unrealistic Expectations of HBH Characters
Not a CoD related post. I’m sorry. I’ll get back to working as soon as I pull myself out of this funk, but in the meantime, please listen to me talk about HBH.
I’ve seen a lot of discussion about Harper’s character, specifically on TikTok, and I think a lot of people are not thinking about this show, specifically Harper, with a lot of nuance.
Admittedly, I was someone who absolutely hated Harper, but then once I started thinking more about her, I realized that she’s not as horrible as people would like to believe.
TW: discussions of attempted rape, assault, police brutality against a member of the First Nations community (Malakai), discussions of Malakai being sexually taken advantage of . Season 2 spoilers.
“The way she treated Amerie was horrible! She made the map too!”
Yes, she did, and she never asked to be excluded from taking responsibility for the map. I am willing to bet that if Amerie had told Woodsy that Harper was in on the map, Harper would have taken responsibility without any issues. In her mind, she has bigger fish to fry. For example, dealing with the fact that she had almost gotten raped and the fact that her father is an alcoholic who gets very violent due to the delusions he experience when drunk.
I don’t think it is fair to blame Harper for the way other people treated Amerie. We don’t know what Harper had told Missy and Sasha, but it’s not Harper’s fault that they won’t hold her accountable for the map. That’s not on her. That’s on Missy and Sasha (a character who is very much portrayed to be a virtue-signaling hypocrite) only.
“Harper should have just communicated. Amerie would have helped her if she just said something!”
This is something I used to argue as well, but oh my god, is it a horrible argument. Yes, I fully believe that if Harper had just said “Please, Amerie, I’m scared. Please help me,” Amerie would have let her in, and she wouldn’t have cared that Spider was there.
I also think it’s a little much to expect teenagers to know how to effectively communicate. Most adults don’t even know how to do that. It’s easy to watch this show from an outside perspective and believe that Harper should just tell Amerie what happened, but it’s just not that easy. Not only do teenagers not know how to effectively communicate, but add in the trauma of almost being raped by a group for at least three to four men, escaping, and then immediately being attacked by your violent alcoholic father, and it’s going to make it that much harder.
Harper is a highly traumatized teenaged individual. We need to stop expecting so much from her. It’s just not realistic, and it rubs me the wrong way when I see people speak about her that way. Until you’ve been in that situation, you will never understand how hard it is to speak about it to anyone.
Later in season one, we literally hear Harper’s reasoning for not speaking up about what happened to her. She literally says “I told you nothing would happen” after she initially tried to make a report about it. In season 2, she drops the court case all together because her own lawyers tell her that unless she can find even more concrete evidence of what happened to her, the chances of her getting justice are slim. They call her “unsympathetic” as well.
Asking an attempted rape victim to “just talk about it” is honestly disgusting in my opinion.
“But Harper and Dusty took advantage of Malakai after he was beaten by the police!!!”
Imma be real with you dawg—no one is praising or defending Harper from that. Sasha and Missy immediately dropped Harper after that. Amerie is pissed at her for that.
In Season 2, Ca$h literally calls Dusty out on it too. “You have a reputation for fucking people when they’re vulnerable.” This isn’t something that is just forgotten or forgiven.
This is a valid reason to not like Harper, but I’m begging y’all to please stop acting like people are praising her for it.
“Harper drove a wedge between Malakai and Amerie. It’s the reason why Malakai left!”
While I think Harper is responsible for some of the distance between Malakai and Amerie, I don’t think she’s totally to blame. It wasn’t her right to tell Malakai to leave Amerie alone. She shouldn’t have assumed that Amerie wanted nothing to do with him.
However, it’s understandable why Harper believed that to be true. Amerie did send mixed signals for how she felt about Malakai, but again, they are all teenagers, and it’s a lot to ask them to know how to effectively communicate.
I also don’t think Malakai left because he couldn’t be with Amerie. The letter he wrote has been posted on the official HBH Instagram, and in that letter, he tells Amerie how much he loves and cares for her, and he believes she’s the right person but at the wrong time. He goes on to say he considered staying, but he doesn’t believe he belongs at Hartley, which makes a lot of sense.
From the moment he joins Hartley High, I think he feels out of place. He’s in a culture where the students seem to be so cruel to one another while claiming to be friends, and that’s just not who Malakai is. He’s so different from his male and female counterparts. I think after he was attacked by the police and being bullied for it, that feeling of not belonging only increases.
We see that Malakai doesn’t really seem to know who he is in season 1. He plays basketball because he’s good at it, but he doesn’t really seem to enjoy it. He’s just doing it because it’s what he’s been told to do. Amerie tells him to pursue dancing as a career, but while he enjoys it, it doesn’t seem like he’s very sure about doing that either. He’s a teenage boy who doesn’t know who he wants.
In season 2, we watch him explore his sexuality. After his threesome with Harper and Dusty in season one, in which we see him kissing Dusty, it’s pretty reasonable for him to be confused about what he could be. It is hinted that he had opened up to Missy about it over summer break as well.
Finally, he begins to explore things with Rowan, and it’s nice to see him accept his bisexuality, but we know it wasn’t easy for him. There are multiple scenes in which he goes back and forth on deciding if he’s bisexual or not, and the constant pressure from his ex-girlfriend demanding answers couldn’t have helped.
Season 2 was all about discovering himself for Malakai, and what he discovered is that he felt out of place for multiple reasons. That’s why he left Hartley High.
Let the record show that I love Malakai, and I want him to just be happy.
“Well, people treated Amerie like she was the devil when Harper was just as bad.”
Again, I don’t see why Harper is to blame for all of this. It’s not her fault. She literally let people believe that she made false rape allegations against Jojo, and everyone did hate Harper towards the end of season one.
Let’s not forget what season 2 was about. Personally, I believe that Season 2 was about showing that people do have the ability to change for the better. We see this with characters like Spider (who is still in the middle of his redemption arc—I think people are too quick to forgive him for what he has done. He has not actually shown significant change by the end of season 2. He still has work to do), Ant (who actually seems to have made changes to himself), and Ca$h.
But most of all, I think this was a season for Amerie to really grow and change. Until Bird Psycho, Amerie seemed to be very unaware of how much of a bully she actually was. She literally egged a girl after she got out of the hospital, and the majority of the people she bullied, she had forgotten about. For those people, they’re bad memories. For Amerie, it was just another day; being mean to people was the norm for her. I think people have every right to not like Amerie. Do I think the name calling was necessary? No, but I feel like a lot of people in this fandom don’t like to hold her accountable while they absolutely rip into Harper.
Hell, even in the very first episode, we see Anerie push through Quinni and Darren, and she seems to have no regard for the people around her. She treats everyone like an NPC.
Listen, I love Amerie, but she does have some very selfish and bully-like tendencies. That’s just the truth.
In conclusion,
Heartbreak High is full of very human characters. They feel very real to me. They are teenagers who drink, party, and do drugs. They’re teenagers who don’t have good communication skills like most teenagers. They’re teenagers who live fast and say and do fucked up shit without thinking about the consequences of their actions because that is what teenagers do.
It’s just crazy to me that people are so quick to demonize Harper, but they’re willing to sympathize with Spider and believe that he’s redeemed himself. While I think he’s on his way, he’s not there yet. Even in season one, I saw so many people defend Spider but demonize Harper and Sasha.
In no way am I saying that Harper shouldn’t be held accountable for the shitty things she has done, but I’m just asking people to have some nuance when speaking about these characters. They are not oversimplified troupes or stereotypes of teenagers. I think the writers did a really good job of making them feel real and complex.
Okay. Rant over :3

i feel like most heartbreak high critisms are based on wanting perfect people and the show has been clear about this being characters that are all flawed, they're humans.
there's messy miscommunications, there's selfishness and there's teenage stupidity.
they're not static, they learn about some things and get better about those, but might drop the ball on things they were good at previously bcs their focus has been taken away.
but teenagers are messy and get caught up in emotions all the fucking time. it's not surprising? like is it just me ? bcs it feels like most commentary i have seen on the show are missing that
