raven’s relationship to taiyang ( @ryoshan ) & the following pregnancy.

these events occurred during the second semester of their fourth year at beacon.

she did love him, but she was ignorant to it. it’s faded and gone now, but she was in denial about it ( which applies to tai and summer both, in the sense that she didn’t want to acknowledge that they actually meant something to her since they were there to learn how to kill huntsmen ). raven went on in ignorance about her own feelings for taiyang but fooled around with tai sexually ( which started one night during a movie they were watching when tai got a boner during a sex scene LOL, and raven teased him about it until finally giving him a handjob ). the feelings went under her emotional radar long enough to the point where they were having sex regularly and just acting young & stupid, honestly? skipping class to make out in a closet, waiting until summer and qrow had left the dorm room to climb on top of taiyang…

even so, she was definitely very dense about the romantic love aspect of it. raven and tai were close, and because of her goal at beacon, she never allowed herself to feel this ~love~ thing very deeply without kicking herself for it. taiyang mentioned to raven while they were meeting up in a closet in the school that he snuck off with her just because he wanted to kiss her.  this triggered a panic attack in raven, the very real realization that he liked ( or loved! ) her, and what if i feel that way too, and that this is a mistake, i knew i shouldn’t have let him in.  raven started freaking out and shoved tai off of her, who tried to comfort her before she beat down the door and flew off in bird form. raven spent a few days on her own away from the school entirely, wandering around vale in an attempt to reevaluate herself and her relationship to tai ( and the fact that ultimately, he should’ve meant nothing to her in the long run ).

upon raven’s return, tai, after looking for an answer but realizing he’d get none, gave up on a relationship with raven without another word. he went back to treating her like a teammate and pretending none of that had happened. about a month and a half passed since the incident in the closet, and raven started experiencing throwing up, morning sickness, and hadn’t had her period. once she realized she was pregnant… well, it became very, very real that this wasn’t something she could just… run from? once yang came into the picture in the sense that she knew she’d have a baby there was this sense of panic concerning… do i love tai? do i want to love tai?  and her pregnancy was extremely stressful for her emotionally because while yes she did love tai but… man she had a tribe, a home to go back to and protect. that was the plan after graduation! raven becomes full on suicidal once she realizes what’s happening. she needs to eat for the baby but she’s so physically anxious and making herself sick over it that she can’t eat. her will to go on dwindles, and she isolates herself from her team as much as possible. not only does she have baby nausea, but also self induced panic - related nausea. this baby is proof of her failure to stay disconnected from the outside world, and she can’t come back home with it. the baby is also something that ties her to tai and her time here and that scares her because it wasn’t supposed to mean a thing. so these factors contribute to her panic.

eventually, she does tell taiyang. they talk it over, she makes him tell ozpin ( because she’s noticed he has a tendency to corner vulnerable students and speak to them in his office alone, and she’d literally rather die than tell ozpin hey i’m pregnant and can’t do your missions anymore until i figure out what the fuck i’m going to do ). she barely graduates with something of a tiny baby bump, and from there, goes to live with tai in a tiny garage in the woods on patch to live out the rest of her pregnancy and actually have the baby. she goes with tai after graduation because raven is self - aware enough of her mental health to know that she can’t do this alone ( as a matter of fact she doesn’t want to do it alone [ or at all preferably but goddamn it she’s gonna have this baby ] ), she isn’t equipped to care for a baby by herself and needs the extra hand and emotional support. raven dives into a depression during and immediately following her pregnancy, living out in the middle of nowhere with tai, and it takes a while for her to warm up to yang, although when she does eventually she becomes a total baby hog. also, raven breastfeeds! :3

          ha!  raven’s cold demeanor cracks into a genuine smile.  “ well, well.  oh, don’t tell me, you’re going to say that you slay those monsters now, right? ”  raven closes her eyes and puts a hand on her hip, chuckling softly to herself.  “ those monsters underneath your bed are nothing compared to what you and your little ragtag group are up against. ”  spring shakes her head in disapproval, and her lids close briefly as she paces across the wooden step extended from beneath her tent ( the boards creak beneath her heels, beneath the weight of the secrets she holds so heavily in her isolation ).  “ you can tear down all the grimm and figurative monsters you like.  but you know, ruby, if you feel like you have to prove to me that you’re not a child, you probably still are one. ”

          “ and we both know how that worked out for you, don’t we, brother? ”  raven scoffs.  her gaze never wavers, never falters as she maintains their eye contact.  there’s something akin to pity in her voice when she continues to speak.  “ we can talk about what happened as much as you want throughout all these years, and we will never see eye to eye.  so what, you abandoned the tribe.  after seeing how close you became to dear old summer and taiyang, it was the inevitable conclusion. ”  raven muses.  she knows he isn’t ready to fight— no matter how they bicker and argue, he has never been one to start a physical altercation with her.  “ or, we can just drop it all together.  this isn’t about you and me. ”

          as the pulsing, glowing crimson portal finally seals shut behind her figure, raven slots omen back into its sheath, a   ‘ shlick! ’   sound emitting from the action, and crosses her arms.  “ proud or not, it’s in the past.  surely you’re making oz proud instead now, aren’t you?  how’s that going for you? ”  raven deems her jab worthy of a smirk now resting on her lips.  “ regardless.  i’ll have you know i’m not here for you, ” the maiden half - lies, shaking her head as she closes her eyes and brushes past her twin casually.  “ but i didn’t want to link directly to yang. ”

          “ do you take me for an idiot? ”  crimson eyes stare like daggers at the white - haired girl, arms crossed as she peers down at her.  for as many times as raven has chosen to hurt, they have always been a choice — to better her own life, to fight for herself, to protect what she cares about most.  “ i know this, schnee.  and that’s a choice i’ll continue to make as long as it protects my tribe, my home.  i don’t owe you an explanation for why i do the things i do, but i guarantee you this — if you won’t hurt others for the sake of yourself, your family?  you won’t last very long in this world.  oh, and by the way?  siding with dear old oz will only shorten that lifespan, too. ”  i’m old enough to have seen it with my own eyes, girl.  run, while you still can.  raven sighs, closes her eyes as memories of things she wishes she could unsee flash behind her eyelids.  “ you’ll make that decision one day, too, if it comes down to someone else and your own self - preservation. ”  to hurt others.

raven had a crush on summer in her first couple of years at beacon long before she had one on tai but she ultimately numbs / mutes the feelings out of existence no im not taking criticism at this time

i Do think theres smth to be said about like... raven’s leaving resulting from a need to take care of herself / do what she wants to do with her life ? she wanted to be back home. obviously she shouldnt have just up n left but i rlly cannot fathom what that woman was goin through when she was pregnant and trying to raise a baby with a man who she knows she isn’t supposed to care about. i think crwby will probably make raven out to be a villain in strq backstory ( given what tai said about her tearing the team apart ) but i also think fandom gives raven a Ton of shit without actually knowing like... what was going through her mind, if she was mentally / emotionally stable, or if she just figured taiyang would give yang a better life without her than with her? + raven wanted to go home. even if she ultimately ended up caring about tai + summer, she missed the tribe and the place she came from and the thought of the tribe being essentially defenseless vs huntsmen made her sick to her stomach. even though she loves yang, she genuinely just realizes that. motherhood isn’t for her and living a domestic life in the woods with tai and yang just... isn’t what she wants for herself. she definitely considers taking yang with her but ultimately knows that being raised by tai will give yang a better chance at life so. she leaves,,, again i’m not trying to excuse her actions but i think this would be a good explanation of it, especially given that we’ve seen raven DOES canonically care about yang in a weird, twisted way.
