Beirne Lay recommended Cleven for the Medal of Honor. “I didn’t get it and I didn’t deserve it,” Cleven said. He did receive the Distinguished Service Cross but never went to London to pick it up. “Medal, hell, I needed an aspirin,” he commented afterward. “So I remain undecorated.”

it's hilarious how utterly unserious the clegan stalag 'fight' was. not one bit serious was the entire, like, 10 second ordeal.
the half-hearted, simultaneous leg grabbing. the scrambling. the scissoring. the "mommy and daddy haven't had enough Adult Privacy of recent days and daddy's going batshit insane" of it all. buck on his "let's not fight in front of the kids" shit.
it got fractionally more real with the punch buck ended up landing but bucky still walked away with a semi, only strengthened by the punch and the lingering psychosomatic imprint of buck's loosely curled fist, so the whole thing kind of like success. because at least buck finally fuckin' touched him. and was paying attention to him. at least that'd feel somewhat familiar or grounding in that hellhole.
gale saying "you know, i really did believe that if there was only two b-17s left, would be you and me flying 'em" to john in the train car is literally a love confession. he's made his decision to escape with john and thinks they're going to die together and is fine with it. there's nothing left for gale to do but admit that he does believe in them, believed the entire time, that he did bet on him and john. he's really saying, "sorry i didn't say it earlier, but thank you for saying it first and always saying it." and i don't think john ever thought he was going to hear that
