An entente, often shortened to dent or tent, is a traditional Alternian sword.

In a modern context, the entente serves largely a ceremonial purpose; usually carved from coloured chitin in order to represent the owner’s blood caste or affiliation with a group and grown in a personalised shape (sometimes representing the owner’s sign or horns), an entente is a symbol of status or rank, and is often passed down through bloodlines.

Because of its non-combat purpose, by modern standards the entente serves as more of a short one-handed spear than a sword, with an often blunt, rounded shaft tipped by a sharp end, used for stabbing and goring - such as in ceremonial cullings - rather than slashing and hitting. Many ententes are adorned with scraping hooks for this reason.

Entente combat does, however, have a place in highblood culture in the form of denting; a sport involving two combatants each armed with one entente, each aiming to stab their opponent in order to win. For the purpose of denting, ententes are typically categorised by the number of prongs branching from the weapon; a 1dent or one-dent is an entente with only one prong, while a 2- or two-dent is an entente with two prongs, and so on for a 3dent.

A two-ended entente with three prongs on each end known as a 2x3dent is the symbol of the Alternian royal bloodline and the Alternian Empire.

I think the problem a lot of people have with blackrom is that the image of it that they’re getting is of two people going out of their way to tear eachother down. While instances of that are still considered blackrom, (and are the only examples given in Homestuck proper) they aren’t considered healthy in the canon. Karkat, devout worshipper of quadrants, points out that Terezi’s and Gamzee’s relationship is destroying her. He later mentions that a proper kismesissitude is supposed to encourage you to better yourself.

A healthy blackrom is primarily about one-ups-manship

NOT sabotage.

It’s two peacocks showing off their feathers to each other going “look how much better at this than you I am” not them ripping out the other’s feathers.
