He shows he cares in his own way… I just – LOOK this is about MY constant need to feel pretty and get attention. It’s my problem, NOT HIS. ”
He listened, and right after a necessary pause, Stephen apologized. “Gabe, I didn’t mean to make this... if I misinterpreted what you said to me, that wasn’t my intention. I’m approaching this conversation like a therapist, but did you want me to approach it more like a friend?”

When Stephen makes mention of having a musician cousin, Gabriel’s first thought is to try to place anyone he may have heard of with the same last name as him. No guitarist comes to mind. “ Yeah, w e l l , maybe I could’a signed him onto my label and given us BOTH a career. ”
He didn’t know what Stephen was trying to get at. Perseverance from adversity or some shit. “ Nah, dude. Guess I’d have to lose my parents to be great. — ANYWAY, you ever do any kinky shit lately? ”
“Well...” Not kinky, but... “A friend of mine from college an’ I actually jus’ started tryin’... datin’, an’ we jus’ actually, uhh... y’know ... f’ th’ first time...” A small, almost happy smile found it’s way onto his normally sober face.
He rarely talked to anyone about sex. But recently, it was just so... s l o w and SWEET and genuine and... fun for him. He had to say something, something like,
“Between you an’ me, it was probably th’ most peaceful sex I’ve ever had in my life.”

The interest didn’t waver, though the smile seemed to fade. “ I mean, it’s good to know I could still be a fucking THERAPIST if I wanted to be — which I don’t. ”
Stephen laughed. “It’s a lot of schooling---I don’t think I’d be able d’do it in this day an’ age.” He was having trouble convincing his oldest son to apply to college with how competitive it was, so the idea of school wasn’t a realistic idea, in his opinion, for anyone.
“But anythin’s possible. Y’know, I had a cousin who’s mother died when he was real young, an’ he was passed along through our relatives, but he became an excellent guitarist---he made a livin’ touring.”
There was something satisfying about having a conversation with Gabe rather than analyzing him---almost as if that’s all that Gabe ever wanted.

“Maybe he’s not able to give you what you need---because it sounds like he knows what you need if you’ve had this conversation time after time,” he said, leading to the most obvious question---why are you with him. But instead, he asked, “What is he able to give you? What keeps you from leaving him?”

“Well, did you ever try?” he bothered asking. “Maybe if he’s aware of what you need, he’ll possibly be able to provide you with what you need.”
A quick cut of a laugh reveals just how ridiculous of a notion THAT is. “Let me give ya the rundown on how that conversation will go, dude. — I’ll tell him I need attention, and he’ll laugh at me. Probably wont even say a single fucking word. Just laugh, like what I’m saying is typical and ridiculous.I’ll cry, he’ll feel bad. Next day there’s a new SAINT LAURENT JACKET waiting for me on the bed. ” and technically that could be considered attention, “ It’d be nice to hear him just say shit. You know? ”
