I 100% agree that MB's and ART's sense of self is very different than a typical human's. This is why artistic renditions of ART fascinate me so much. I love how people visualize it. But when reading the books, I never thought of ART having any kind of physical form, mostly because MB doesn't think of ART that way. There are some metaphors strewn into MB's retelling for the benefit of the humans (a figure looming over its shoulder, for example), but to MB, ART is code. The physical housing is not important or really even considered beyond how humans react to it (and even then, as mentioned above, MB sometimes doesn't "get it" and often doesn't think about how humans will react to its own or other bots' damage).
In Miki's case, if there had been a back-up code from even a few days prior, MB wouldn't have felt any loss at all. The code would be uploaded to a new housing, maybe minus a few days of memories. No harm, no foul. For us, the emotional impact of the scene was Miki's death. For MB, though, it was the fact that the humans were actually mourning Miki's death. (I think MB did have an emotion about the loss of Miki's unique code. But it had nothing to do with the housing and everything to do with the connections and community Miki had with its humans.)
So, in System Collapse, the only concern MB has is that ART makes the code transfer in time to retain that piece of itself. The drone housing itself isn't important.
The exception to this thought process, of course, is MB's organic parts and how they hold on to memory in a way a full bot can't replicate. I don't think MB has, even by the end of System Collapse, come to terms with or fully accepted how those organic parts affect it. MB retains trauma because of those organic parts, so it would also make sense that it would want to separate itself from that part of itself (as it tries to do throughout the first few novellas). However, those same organic parts allowed MB to piece together how to convince the colony to see the truth.
There are many things I could say about this concept of code vs organic in regards to MB 2.0 as well, but this is getting too long as it is.
Suffice to say, the bot/organic mix is a double-edged sword. And by the end of SC, I think MB is beginning to accept that there are actually benefits as well as its many perceived downsides to having organic parts.
Also, this is why Martha Wells is a genius with character development. We've been riding this "acceptance of self" train with MB since All Systems Red. Between NE and SC, the train crashed, but with help from ART and its humans, MB is back on track and picking up speed.
MB still has a ways to go, but its getting there.
Honestly at the end of System Collapse, i honesty expected MB to get possessive and a bit more emotional over ART-drone once it reconnected with ART-prime again and dropped out of the feed, cause like... the whole time, ART-drone has been ART in portable, physical form, something that could be held and touched and could touch back.
Then, when everyone was safe on the shuttle going back to ART-prime; ART-drone, which is still ART... was hurt, and damaged and basically dying. And even though it had some warning when the hand off happened, imagine you're next to your friend and suddenly its just not there anymore, all you have is just an inanimate empty husk beside you

Ghost's thumbs sweep through the buzzed hairs on the sides of his head, and Soap moves closer — so close he can feel the warm breaths passing through Ghost's mask. He curls his fingers tighter into his jacket.
The sirens grow louder.
Fuck. He doesn't want to let go. But he has to.
"Go. Go on," he whispers.
He opens his eyes and finds Ghost watching him. He unclenches his fists and gently pushes Ghost toward the stairs, even as he backs away. Ghost's hands fall away from his face to dangle listlessly at his sides.
"Be safe, Johnny."
Soap nods.
Their gazes hold for another moment.
And then Ghost is gone.

There was a certain desperation that always came with the job. Soap knows that. He just never thought it would be like this. Heart aching- quiet sobs- the demand to be violent, the all encompassing love that came with it. Soap always knew he was messed up, no one would willingly sign up their life to die if they weren’t a little fucked up in the head. But god, it was- should be concerning to Soap how far he would go to to keep Ghost safe. To keep them safe. Ghost was no softie, the thought of it is laughable, but Soap has always been aggressively protective- even possessive of what he thinks he should stand up to. He’s unwaveringly loyal, both a valuable asset and his greatest flaw.
Soap wants to dig his nails into Ghost so hard his pale skin tears, sink his teeth into his jugular until his entire mouth is filled with his blood, meld their ribs together and press his heart right against Simon’s cold, beating one. Soap wants to tuck his head into the crook of Simon’s neck, fling a leg over his and feel his chest slowly rising and falling. He wants to share their body heat, entangle their legs, so that he cannot tell where Johnny ends and where Simon begins. He wants, he wants, he wants. Love, and his distinct obsession towards it.

6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending? Probably Couch Surfing because it's an "in progress" ending. But it's still mostly happy because I can't really write anything else. LOL
7. What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending? Probably Formalities? But all of them are pretty tooth-rotting...

9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind? Yes, but it's always slow burn smut with feelings (hi, I'm ace).
10. Do you write crossovers? What’s the craziest one you’ve written? I love thinking about crossovers, but I haven't written any yet (unless you count the AU from question 13, I guess).
11. Have you ever had a fic stolen? Not that I know of.

13. Have you ever co-written a fic before? The soapghost Punisher AU I'm working on with @kibagib - You're my mask, you're my cover, my shelter - is basically co-written. Kiba gives me the outline for what they want to happen in the scene, and I write it out, adding my own flare here and there. It's been so much fun to work together to bring Kiba's visions to life!
14. What’s your all time favorite ship? As much as I love soapghost, I think sheith will always have my heart.
15. What’s a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will? So far, I've finished or am actively working on all my WIPs... 😯 I do have an idea for a soapghost inter-dimensional-travel, angst-with-a-bittersweet ending fic, but that one hasn't gotten past outline phase. That's the closest I have to a fic I might never finish. (This fic would also win "angstiest ending," btw.)
16. What are your writing strengths? I think I write dialogue and emotions/introspection pretty well.
17. What are your writing weaknesses? I struggle with descriptions - they are often what I "add in" during the editing phases. I'm also a VERY SLOW writer, which is why it takes so long to update sometimes.
18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic? I don't do it unless I have a native speaker willing to help me with the translation. Otherwise, it's just English but in italics. LOL
19. First fandom you wrote for? Dragon Age (long ago with a different user name)
20. Favourite fic you’ve written? I love them all, but my first sheith fic - In Sunshine and in Shadow - will always be special to me because it helped me process that atrocious VLD ending.

His heart leaps in his chest as Simon reaches out and takes hold of his free hand.
"So. Tomorrow."
"Aye. What about it?"
"You gonna make me ask?"
"Maybe I like it when ye actually tell me what ye want instead of leaving me guessing."
A surge of embarrassment floods through John at the breathy quality of his voice. He clears his throat and tries to look down, but Simon's finger catches him under the chin and gently tips his head up even as Simon leans closer. Their faces are inches apart, and John is working so hard not to hyperventilate from the overwhelming need to lift up on his toes and press their mouths together that he almost misses Simon's reply.
"Tempting," Simon murmurs. "I want a lot of things."
