Mealybugs
If you see white fluff in the crevices of your plant or tiny white dots on its surface, it is probably a mealybug infestation. I found this on two of my cacti, which share an open terrarium. They can unfortunately spread to other plants, so if you think you see an infected one, be sure to isolate it from any others. To get rid of them, I used some denatured alcohol (methylated spirits), a small paintbrush and some cocktail sticks. Mealybugs are small white bugs that can be found inside the white fluffy substance, crawling on the surface of the plant, hiding in crevices and even in the soil and the plant pot. Simply dip the paintbrush in the methylated spirits and reach into the white fluff - it should turn into a gooey subtance - and clean it out, as well as the bugs that may be sitting or crawling across the surface. I use the cocktail sticks to reach areas that the paintbrush couldn’t, or to help scrape the bugs off. It is definitely worth changing the soil (being careful not to damage the roots too much) and the pot too.
Of course, it’s best to deal with the problem as soon as possible! I know I have had people ask me how to sort out mealybug infestations before, so I hope this is useful to you. Good luck!
