Johannah Herr, American War Rug I (Immigrant Detention), 2020. Tufted rug made from acrylic and wool yarn.
Rug references immigration detention and exploitation along the US/Mexico border.
Iconography: border wall fencing, ICE and Border Patrol bullet-proof vests, backpacks, prison toilet / water fountain combos, (reports surfaced that when these combined facilities broke, women in detention centers were instructed to simply âdrink out of the toilet bowlâ), thermometer (detention center cells are often kept at freezing temperatures and referred to by migrants as âhielerasâ or âfreezersâ), slashed water bottles (videos surfaced of border patrol officers intentionally damaging or contaminating water bottles left in the desert for migrants by NGOs), teddybears (migrant demographics increasingly include children, who are traumatically separated from families), highway overpass / prison tent cities / Walmarts (all were repurposed as detention centers).

âMany people seem to think it foolish, even superstitious, to believe that the world could still change for the better. And it is true that in winter it is sometimes so bitingly cold that one is tempted to say, âWhat do I care if there is a summer; its warmth is no help to me now.â Yes, evil often seems to surpass good. But then, in spite of us, and without our permission, there comes at last an end to the bitter frosts. One morning the wind turns, and there is a thaw. And so I must still have hope.â

âa community without romance risks being brutish and crass, superficial and brittle, cruel and even muderous. . . i donât mean just romantic romance. i donât just mean erotic romance. . . i mean the romance that allows us to soften our voices when we see each other.â
