Went to see Monkey Man tonight, and man I'm really feeling something kinda something.
People have described it as an Indian John Wick, and honestly, while I'm sure they mean that as high praise, I think it does the movie and its story such a disservice.
It's so much deeper than that. I think it's going to be one of those movies that really sits with me for a long time. It's really beautiful, and meaningful, and also horrific, but touching and deep, and heartfelt in a way that a lot of things aren't these days.
Or maybe I'm just moved by Dev Patel and the way he's able to emote so clearly while portraying a character that almost strays towards stoicism. It's really quite incredible.
It's just, I don't really have words for it, it's too soon, I have to sit with it, but it is really quite stunning.
If this is what Dev Patel can do as writer/director/producer/star then man, he deserves to have an incredibly bright future ahead of him.
Also he's really really quite nice to look at as well. ;)
I highly recommend, though I will note it is quite violent and extremely bloody in the last act, and it also deals with some extremely heavy topics.

Robert Downey Jr reacting to Cillian Murphy's speech about him.
So, I'm very very pleased to be here tonight in my latest role as Robert Downey Jr's straight man slash loyal wingman. And it's become an actual real life role of a lifetime for me over the last few months. Honestly. And I love it. No, honestly, I'm thrilled to be here, because I want to take this opportunity to say publicly that I've never worked with or met anyone like Robert Downey Jr. Truly. And aside from his staggering talent, and his otherworldly range, he has managed to awe us with both his character and his leading man performances, searing dramatic performances, and his gut-busting comedic performances. He's taken on and triumphed in every imaginable kind of role, whether it be an endearing romantic, a dogged reporter, a punch drunk to a private eye and even the quintessential action here. And, I mean, it's just mind-bending, what this man has done. In my opinion, he is the most versatile actor of his generation.
Most likely of many generations. I hadn't met Robert until we were brought together by Chris Nolan on Oppenheimer, but, you know, anyone that loves film, and that loves great acting, I've been a fan forever. And I was always tying to figure out from a distance, you know, how he actually does what he does. And working alongside of him on Oppenheimer, watching him turn every day into Lewis Strauss, uh.... I'm still not sure how he does it. I think it might be a marriage of pure pure talent, and this kind of preternatural insight into human nature. And what I've also learned is that Robert works incredibly hard to make it look so easy, as all the great ones do.
But he's not jut a great actor. He's a kind of a unicorn, because he's a great actor who's also risen to the level of superstardom that few of us can kind of comprehend. And, why do I think that is? I think that is because he is one of the kindest, funniest, most generous actors I have ever worked with. And all of that comes out on the screen and you see it in every single performance. And all of his performances, no matter how unlike himself they are, they're always authentic, like Robert.
And every minute that I spent with him on camera was pure bliss, even though his character wanted me to disappear into a black hole and never come back.
But off camera we've bonded in a way that truly I've rarely done.
And I am so so very proud to be here tonight as a Downey straight man slash wingman. And I'm even prouder to call him a friend.

So @sounds-of-some-day and I have been trying to watch as many movies we felt would be nominated at the Oscars this year, and now with the official nomination list, I can't say I'm shocked but I'm definitely disappointed.
If Maestro wins a single Oscar (save for maybe Sound), I'll be incredibly upset. Never seen a more haphazardly slapped together, desperate film before, and I think Bradley Cooper's begging for an Oscar is starting to get incredibly annoying.
Killers of Flower Moon was mid at best, but I wouldn't be upset with it winning Costuming, or with Lily Gladstone winning Best Actress (even if I personally feel Sandra H眉ller was the standout actress this year both in Anatomy of a Fall and The Zone of Interest). Shocked to see that Margot Robbie wasn't nominated for Barbie however, she was truly the standout performance in that movie and I really feel like she deserves one at this point (she was previously passed over for I, Tonya, which she truly deserved it for in my opinion).
I truly hope Anatomy of a Fall wins something (Original Screenplay seems to be the most likely), because it was such an incredible film. Past Lives, as well, because it did not go where I thought it would and it was such a breath of fresh air, as well as bringing a unique perspective to the idea of destined lovers. I'll be a little pissed about May December winning, mostly because the producers didn't ask for permission to tell the story of the real person and events their story was based on.
I'm tickled to see Nimona nominated for Animated, even though I know it won't win (not that I'm begrudging Spiderverse or Boy and the Heron for this, they're both incredible movies).
I can see Barbie getting Production Design, and I honestly wouldn't be upset with that at all. Though, knowing the Academy, it's usually the historical pieces that win these categories. If Napoleon wins, I'll be incredibly upset.
If Maestro wins Makeup and Hairstyling, I'll walk into the fucking ocean. That fake nose prosthetic was so bad and distracting and it made Cooper sound incredibly nasal-y and awful. Or maybe he was doing that on purpose to sound deeper and it just sounded like shit instead. Regardless, I think it's the worst pick for this category.
Disheartened by the lack of Metro Boomin in Best Song. The Spiderverse soundtrack was breathtaking, and Metro and the rest of the musicians worked incredibly hard on the incredible songs such as Am I Dreaming and Annihilate. Barbie getting two songs nominated...I understand I'm Just Ken was a funny song with a creative dance number, and the emotion and story of finding yourself in What Was I Made For are both really good, but it should have been one or the other.
TLDR; Oscars stay predictably boring and disappointing.
Side note, in December I was able to watch The Iron Claw; INCREDIBLE movie, I cried at least 4 times while watching it. Not a single nomination. Sorry but Zac Efron's role was far better than Bradley Cooper's shit ass Maestro. Please watch The Iron Claw.

Oh, how could I forgot:
Totally expected snub, but Metro Boomin should have been nominated for Am I Dreaming.
I know Billie Eilish is going to win 馃槥 but Am I Dreaming is leagues better. The Academy hates animated films and it sucks.
America Ferrera getting nominated for Barbie, but Margot Robbie and Greta Gerwig not is just 馃拃馃拃馃拃
Sandra H眉ller should have gotten that spot for Zone of Interest, but at least she got nominated for Anatomy of a Fall. Unfortunately, she won't win lead actress, even though she absolutely should.
For a second I forgot they go alphabetical by last name and thought Cillian got snubbed when they didn't announce him after Bradley. My heart dropped.
Bradley and everything Maestro is a tragedy of a nomination, but wholly expected. Yes, Mulligan acted circles around Bradley, but the whole thing was badly written and overacted. None of it felt like real people. Whole thing felt like watching a stage play. The movie should have been snubbed solely for the crime of making Leonard Bernstein boring, as well as the most heterosexual portrayal of a queer man ever put on film. (I have a lot of feelings about this movie in case you were wondering.)
But, most importantly, we now have three time Oscar nominee (and hopefully soon Oscar winner 馃) Robert Downey Junior. Love him so much I don't even care if he has the best performance this year. He wants a little statue of a gold man for his mantle, so I want him to have one. Lol. (But also his performance *was* really good!)
Anyway, pretty much what people expected with few surprises outside Ferrera and actually the Killers of the Flower Moon song for original song was a nice surprise. I feel like we can already say who's going to win in almost every category (sadly Best Actor is tighter than I would like 馃槥). It's kinda a shame because there were definitely some other exciting options. Sad to see All of Us Strangers get shut out, but not surprised.
(Also it's a shame that none of Rachel Zegler's songs from Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes were allowed to qualify. Ridiculous rule in my opinion.)

Sitting here sobbing after watching Past Lives. What a beautiful, heart-wrenching movie.
I wrote earlier this year that Hollywood is afraid to tell the story of two people who love one another but just aren't right for one another (for whatever reason). Well, this movie (not made by Hollywood) absolutely nailed it.
I don't even really have words for how beautiful this story was. This movie is easily in my top three for the year (behind Oppenheimer and Anatomy of a Fall).
Extremely pleased that Teo Yoo was nominated for a BAFTA. Such an amazing, beautiful, subtle performance. Blown away by how expressive both he and Greta Lee were. You felt every emotion their characters were feeling.

Not gonna lie, bummed for my boy Cillian. Saw The Holdovers a couple nights ago. It's good, but I don't think Giamatti even comes close to Cillian.
I kinda figured that Cillian would struggle come awards season though, because it was such a nuanced performance.
Anyway, super happy for RDJ. Love him. I'm not gonna jinx things, but looking good so far. 馃馃馃
