There are probably other reasons why Izumi is probably an only child, but I wonder if the reason is to act as a reset for the Fire Nation Royal family. Like Iroh & Ozai had a more one sided fuelled sibling rivalry. Then there’s Zuko & Azula’s sibling rivalry that was spurred on by their father after he exploited who was the stronger bender, and Iroh didn’t help with their sibling rivalry even more.
I wonder as an act of restarting his Nation further Zuko only wanted one child because of addressed and unaddressed toxic sibling rivalries within the family, and decided that with Izumi there would be a clean slate. The last only child within the family was Azulon which Sozin started with to push the Fire Nation ideal and instilled in continuing the Hundred Year War. I would think Zuko would do that but to push the ideals of peace and reparations with Izumi. It would be interesting to think about.

I’m just imagining her going to her Mother’s grave asking her what she’d do.
Mai has spent time in the Capital and was aware that her Dad lacked a sense of confidence needed to lead. I believe that due to them forcing her to suppress her emotions, she became more of a decisive person when it came to decision making. Another thing about Mai is that she didn’t believe in wasting her energy as much or not doing something she found uncomfortable like sludge water in the Drill. Mai is an interesting character. I know she called out Zuko once in the comics. She has clearly grown and doesn’t tolerate standing by and letting something wrong happen. I wonder if she wanted to be different from her mother.
as of right now i am writing a lil something to post tonight but i thought of something that I MUST share.
I headcanon Mai to die before Zuko, at around late 50s–early 60s due to an illness so Zuko retired after she passed and Izumi became the Fire Lord about a month later so hear this out:
Izumi's ideals and goals follow her father but her ways follow her mother's.
Mai was (though not entirely) Zukos balance. as ive said before, Zuko lead with passion and heart more than anything but his wife was what stopped him from acting before thinking, who called him out when his decisions were stupid and who he went for advice
Izumi learnt from both of them, not just Zuko, she could see how her mother stoic and cold attitude intimidated people without being afraid, she was intimidating while caring to her people
now as Mai passed, Izumi picked the habit of going to her mother's grave for advice. She goes go Zuko too, but sometimes she just needs her mom

hey can we talk about classism in hollow knight? i feel like we should talk about classism in hollow knight. specifically the city of tears (as that is my one basis for all of this)
i first noticed this when trying to get from king's station to junk pit, but there are TWO stag stations in the ENTIRETY of the city of tears (the CAPITAL!!!). and yeah, maybe there were more that got flooded, we see evidence of that in king's station. but we don't see any more evidence, meaning that even if there were more, they've been underwater for a while, probably long enough that they were flooded even in hallownest's heyday.
nevertheless, there are two stag stations (that we know of) in the city: one on the right side where all the rich bugs live, and one on the left where everyone else lives.
not to mention the fact that this means that there SHOULD be more on the left side, as there would be more bugs on that side, the station on that side is wayyy farther away from where the bugs are actually living, whereas on the right it's easily accessible. but that doesn't even matter!! because the citizens can't even USE the one on the left! why? because it's the CITY STOREROOMS. it's not FOR public transport! it's for transporting goods to and from the city! the only reason a bug is going there is for work! because it's their job!
that means there's only one stag station in the ENTIRE CITY (which, i must stress again, IS THE CAPITOL) and it's on the right half of the city, where the rich bugs can easily access it and use it as they please while everyone else has to walk all the way across the city to get to a stag station.
BUT WAIT!! THERE'S MORE!!
they might not even be able to do THAT! because remember what's between the left and right halves of the city of tears? REINFORCED GATES. that can only be opened from the RIGHT HALF of the city.
there is literally a TOWER dedicated to these gates! that has balconies to see who is trying to enter! (i can't find images online but you know where i mean) it has shelves of tablets that were probably used to track who went into these gates! it's not enough that you have to walk the length of the city to use PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION, you also have to go through a QUEUE of other bugs trying to do the same thing! and they can deny you access for whatever reason!
and you could say, "well, maybe those gates are in place for the same reason as the ones at the outside of the city! maybe those gates are just for city defence!" but why would you have defensive gates INSIDE the city? what purpose would they serve if the threat's already inside the city?
what purpose do you have for sectioning off your poorer, working/middle class citizens unless you KNOW they're being mistreated? unless you KNOW they're starting to get fed up? maybe part of the reason PK presents himself as a god for his people to worship is because they know they wouldn't be able to fight a god? because they're blinded by his light?
