Okay and I will add: it depends where you are.
The South? Absolutely a long tradition of enslaved/slavery-like work conditions (think especially of the chain-gangs!) and incarcerated people there will trace the labor history back to enslavement. You’re beaten if you don’t work.
In other places, it’s messier; work in northern prisons actually started out of reform, that saw the work of incarcerated people as part of projects of rehabilitation. In the current form of prisons (warehousing) we see work closer to being presented as a privilege, a way to enforce order. If you’re in the SHU/whatever they call solitary in your prison, you’re not let out to work, and you work for small wages. It’s a pittance but it is a wage, which is important because you need money for commissary because prisons literally don’t feed you enough.
I know some incarcerated people who strongly resist the “slave labor” connection because of the difference of experience based on location. You can read more about alternative perspectives in Victoria Law’s book Prisons Make Us Safer: and 20 Other Myths about Mass Incarceration

every day i wake up and remember that the anatomical symbol of love in Disco Elysium is the lungs. how we breathe love in, how we exhale it back into the world, how we can suffocate from the lack of it, how it expands inside our chests. and i want to cry a little bit.

The unfortunate thing about life is all those people who you’re told are laughably wrong are in fact right in ways that matter
Like the problem with Freud isn’t really Freud, it’s that we completely ignore what theory means, and also we still don’t care to address the problems of healing

Actually what we mean is that crime is a categorization meant to produce disposal; actions and behaviors are criminalized to allow the state to discard people (either directly through incarceration and/or state sanctioned murder (killed by cops, by the death penalty, or being left to die in prison through practices like withdrawing the possibility of parole and the refusal of compassionate releases) or indirectly by forcing individuals who are criminalized to the margins of society—think sex workers and people who use drugs.) “Crime” is distinct from “harm” and the former is the excuse for state violence, while the latter speaks to damage done interpersonally and communally (and also distinguishes how much of “crime” is about the protection of private property, rather than repairing harm done.)

Being a mom and an anarchist and trying to figure out the whole "parenting" song and dance from that perspective makes me think 8-year-olds have about got it figured out. I hate school. I hate tests. I hate bedtime.

Poll because I'm curious:
I ask for the "roots" because of this idea that in some "cultures" families are very big, and in other "cultures" they tend to be small, and I want to know to what degree this applies to cousins 😄
