He hums his acknowledgement of the answer, thoughts swirling lazily for another minute or so. It isn't as bad as he thought it might be, especially if he's actually able to sleep.
"You're always welcome at my place, if yours is too far." He certainly hadn't dazedly found his way to the Turk's basement because home was too far. It was just... empty. For some reason, after a day that was just one crisis after another, his own furnished rooms didn't sound half as appealing as a basement office where he knew he'd find someone he trusted still at work despite the hour.
Maybe it was all the years he'd spent under the Turk's watchful eye. Or maybe it was something else. Either way, he felt more at ease than he ever did tossing and turning in his own bed.
"Will you sleep here tonight?"
Darkening the room is usually reserved for when a Turk is injured or hungover - but he doesn't mind working by the light of his lamp. Though it does make him tire easier. The bright lights of the office help keep him focused.
So he works a little slower than usual, being careful not to make mistakes as the quiet stillness of the dim room calls to him to rest.
He glances up when Rufus speaks but returns to his papers as he answers. "Depends. It probably averages out to once or twice per week - but it's more when things are busy and less when they're not. Sometimes... Going home feel like more effort than its worth."

Satisfaction blooms as warmth that sits low in his body at the positive sign of interest. He's not taking it as confirmation to proceed just yet, however.
"Make fun?" he questions, a purr in his voice. "Mm..." Rufus flexes his shoulders as knots from long hours at his desk and in training are unwound by skilled fingers. His hand traces down Jae's back again, appreciating the texture of his skin, the subtle bumps of vertebrae. "I may tease, but I wouldn't dare mock you. I rather like having my appendages intact."
His lips quirk up, affection and amusement alive in his gaze. His smile only grows at the serious look he's given. "I know. Don't worry so much. I know it's hard to believe, but I can listen," he reassures, letting his hand dip lower to caress the curves of Jae's ass. He's still testing the waters, though his dick has jumped ahead of the game, plump enough to feel, if not fully hard yet.
"I find that respect is a two-way street," he comments, letting his fingers brush just along Jae's crack. "As communication should be. I don't just want to hear what's too far. I want to hear what you like. Tell me all those things you wish someone would do to you..." He presses close, so their cheeks brush as he whispers in his ear, "Any pretty boy of mine only deserves the best." He grazes his teeth against Jae's ear, nibbling a moment. "Let me spoil you, Jae-hyo."
He pulls back, eyes dancing at Jae's proposition. "Of course. I do have expensive tastes..." He flicks the little bell again. "Would you like to see the ears and tail?" His questing fingers push in until their just touching Jae's anus, ready to pull back if it's poorly received.
No one ever said Jae-hyo was completely immune to flattery. Being told he was respected certainly helped the situation, the lithe fingers traveling down the length of his spine sent a pleasant shiver through his body- Pressing up closer against Rufus' chest.
He was usually taking the lead and setting the pace, deciding how fast or slow to take it, but the concept of being able to simply turn off his brain for a couple hours was extremely enticing. At being told he could be 'frustrating', he merely preened all the more, smirking faintly amidst the compliments.
"Since you've made it clear that I am not being made fun of, then how could I possibly refuse?" Yoon muses aloud, kneading his hands along the slopes of the other man's shoulders, massaging the tension away from those areas.
He did take a moment to look at the blonde in earnest, showing that if anything came across as uncomfortable, then he would clearly voice his displeasure. Rather loudly, given his personality.
"I'll definitely have more than a few ideas for your accessories, only the best quality that my funds can afford- Which is quite expensive. If you're going to look beautiful, then you might as well feel like it, right?"
Truth be told, he enjoyed indulging his partners to the point of spoiling them, but Rufus would get a taste of that later on if he agreed to the scenario that the agent had in mind. They certainly had a lot of time to discuss specifics, but at a later date.

Having Sephiroth's full gaze upon him was unnerving, but Rufus kept his face impassive as he met it head on. He was used to looking into the eyes of predators, and this one was at ease, at least. Better than he could say for many of those that he dealt with.
"Hm." He took a drink of his champagne. He would have preferred whiskey, but this was his father's function, not his. It was good champagne in any case, just not in his top five choices of intoxicant. "You're good at this game, for a Soldier." He meant it as a compliment rather than a slight. The rank and file weren't known for their diplomacy. Naturally, the Firsts were of a higher order, but it was still interesting to witness firsthand. He'd mastered the art of specifically vague statements.
"As such a prominent figure within Shinra, I fear I haven't done my duty in introducing myself sooner. Perhaps we could amend that. This is hardly a good venue for getting to know one another. Perhaps you would be interested in joining me for a chat somewhere quieter later this evening?" He glanced at Sephiroth's glass. "I have a fine selection of drinks, if that interests you."
Tumblr media
The SOLDIER could see where this was going, and what was truly expected of him. This was still a space he would prefer to tread carefully, but he would play along nonetheless. He would not put too much expectation on his contributions being worth it for the future, but he supposed it would hurt nothing to speak his mind just a little.
His drink was held relaxed at his side, body language settling more, as he turned his attention more to the Vice President, wondering just how coiled to strike the man was.
He asked what he expected. Not what he wanted. They both knew better than to expect or give THAT honesty. So he'd give something balanced in between. "I expect that my role might become, for lack of a better word, more focused, as the future brings it's changes. I would also expect a shift in goals. I imagine, from business son to heir, ideals align for the most part. I suppose I can only expect that your goals will evolve and grow with the shift of time...more than that of either of our forebears."
He would bother stating his own legacy here, not one to flaunt it, but not one to deny it when addressed. But Hojo, despite believing and sometimes seeming as if he truly looked to the future, only ever seemed (in Sephiroth's eyes) stuck in a drive, in a goal, that had been etched into him for years. And it wore him down, walking these halls.
Sephiroth knew there would be changes that would either be failures or unwelcome. He knew that Rufus was still a Shinra, and he knew he never cared for many minds in this company save for the few he kept close. But, Rufus was not a fool, and he had watched him from afar. Unlike most fools in this hall, Rufus learned. He watched, and he learned, and he adapted.
"I suppose I do expect at least a few great things out of you. Sir." he offered, a careful, challenging smirk on his thin lips, inhuman SOLDIER eyes framed by silver bangs.

"No, Simba," Rufus corrected. "The polite way is to tack on a please at the end. You don't have to mean it, but people like hearing it. You're more likely to get your way by using it with certain types of people. Eventually you may have the clout to discard it, but you should at least know manners for when you need them. Try it out." He waited for Simba's second attempt, ready to lead the cub to his promise reward.
"...Yes?" He answered slowly while arching a brow in confusion as Rufus ruffled his mane. He'd done pretty much everything right though if he had to sit or do some other silly trick to get a treat there was no chance Simba was going to perform it because he'd waited long enough. Quietly looking around the room, the lion waited for the President to make his move. Was he going to get something or not? "So...can we go now?"

"Your guess is as good as mine," he tells the tiger, watching her confusion. "I'm probably as friendly as yours," he throws an amused smirk at his double. The man is already so different from him, yet he feels a kinship with him anyway.
"Disgusting," he scoffs, looking back at Pryna. "Hojo has his uses, but he's both unhinged and an ass. I deal with him as little as possible." Perhaps that was a mistake, but he doesn't particularly want to think about the creatures he might have saved if he had, so he doesn't."
rufus can't help the way his lips twitch in amusement as pryna interacts with his doppelganger. the tiger was confused, glancing back to HER rufus and to the strange one, hoping for an answer neither could provide.
"mhm. a solid white coat wasn't what he was going for. he went on about how she had no chance of being stealthy. so i took her. her name is pryna."

"Well, we're of like mind, then. I have a few questions myself. Not that I expect you'll reveal your secrets easily." He got the feeling that Shivan liked to toy with people just as much as he did, which made this encounter risky. "Fire away," he offered with a smirk.
"Believe it or not, you wouldn't be the first," Rufus answers with wry amusement. Not all were charmed by his good looks and power. Frankly, he tended to find those individuals more interesting. This one is definitely in character, and perhaps that's why he made the invitation. He likes to peel away the layers people hide themselves behind and get to the core of their personalities. There's probably some kind of poetic irony in that. He doesn't examine it.

Rufus whirls. "Listen, asshole, and listen well. I do not appreciate you deciding what I'm feeling for me. So either you can believe me that I know myself better than you do, or you can use whatever dragon bullshit you think you have to save yourself and leave me to myself because I don't need people who don't listen to me in my service. I would rather be out here alone. Are we clear?"
Rufus shoves Lin'k hard on reflex, indignant rage blinding him so thoroughly for a moment that his fingers brush his weapon before he gets ahold of himself. He shoot straight back up to his feet. “Fuck. You.”
He paces away posture rigid, like a coiled spring ready to unwind. “Clearly you senses aren’t as keen as you think if you can’t tell the difference between panic and ire. And if you lay a hand on me again, I’ll shoot you.”
He doesn’t even look at Lin'k. Right now, he means it. The last person who made him this angry is his father, and his secretary would be a much easier target. It would be a shame, since this one was actually competent, but clearly he’s let things get too personal between them if he thinks he can get away with talking to him and manhandling him like that.

“Its better to deal with those than dehydration, rufus” lin'k retorts flatly, his tone going sharp “now sit down before I sit on you. Pacing isn’t going to help and winding yourself up won’t either”
He tilts his head a bit, listening for any familiar or useful noises.

"Ugh," Rufus complained eloquently, blinking heavy eyelids. His father just kept getting worse. Next he'd have a half sibling 20 years younger than him. He was hoping he'd seen the last of them.
"I'll take whoever you have." Under other circumstances, he might have tried to figure out who Tseng had in mind. He was too exhausted to think, though, and his headache was getting worse. He just wanted to pop some painkillers and sleep it off, but was doing his damnedest to fight the fatigue. It was probably a pointless exercise, though? What did he think we was going to do in his state without a weapon? Dying in his sleep might be undignified, but it did sound peaceful.
"Thank you," he mumbled, and stifled a yawn. "I think I'll... rest. A little. Just make sure you kill anyone who kills me," he ordered, only half lucid. "You're a good man, Tseng. Watch... watch over Reno." Even as his consciousness faded, his lingering sense of worry invaded his dreams, leaving them troubled. Reno kept bleeding out in front of him, shot by assailants he couldn't see or find. His own gun was never there when he reached for it. His father was making out with a woman who looked like she could be his sister while Reno's blood lapped at his polished shoes.
Hearing the question on what did dear old Shinra do to piss someone off Tseng had to bite his lip to keep from laughing some. After a pregnant pause he spoke calmly. “Apparently he was caught trying to bed someone’s daughter who’s closer in age to you than himself.” It was shameful but admittedly he found it amusing that the head of Shinra was resorting to women who were barely legal.
“I think I can get someone to you sooner, you may not like the option though.” Tseng admitted as he sent an email to a nearby soldier who was loyal and strong but fairly stupid. At least Roche was loyal and a charmer to the women.
“Do I trust the staff no, but considering at the moment Elena and Rod are en rout there is little I can do until they arrive.” Once he heard about the underplate prejudice that made Tseng pause and start typing up an email to send to Elena and Rod. “Consider it done sir, upon arrival Elena will have Rod deal with him. I am leaving instructions on making it very painful.”
“Sir right now we have soldier planning a sweep and we have seven suspects detained. As for leaving you alone do not worry someone is on their way up to watch you until Elena arrives.” Tseng wondered which would cave first Rufus’s sanity or that of medical staff. Roche was always a pain in the ass because he was annoying but he worked well enough.

"Good." He nods once and trails his fingers down Reno's shoulder before breaking the touch, only to offer another softer one to the small of Reno's back to escort him forward. "Company would be nice." Having Dark soothed much of his loneliness, but having a person around was simply different. Perhaps they can both distract each other a little. It seems he's been very negligent in his research of his employees.
A feeling of relief strikes Rufus as the appearance of that smile, more like the Turk he knows. He still feels mixed up and turned around, and now quite sure how to sort himself. He also feels wrong about leaving Reno like this. "Would you... like to come over?"

Rufus's hand tightens on Reno's shoulder, feeling a very inadequate companion in this moment. "You're not alone." Even Rufus, who can't believe anyone would hold affection for him knows he's not alone. He and the Turks... they're bound by something deeper than loyalty. He wishes he knew how to offer more. How to convey that he cares... maybe it's just that simple. "I care."

reno leans into the touch without a second thought. maybe he shouldn't, but he's an affectionate person by nature and he will accept any touch as well as giving it. not that he's reaching out TO touch rufus back, but the thought is there. reno closes his eyes and tilts his head back, offering a small hum. "naw, but s'all good. it still hurts, but it's not as bad as it used to be. just sucks to remember that--i'm alone."

The whiplash is too much. He can't figure out how Reno can be aromantic and asexual, yet have a former partner and child. But those things pale next to sadness painting Reno's features as he says was. Not entirely sure what he's doing, he reaches out a hand place on Reno's shoulder. He wants to ask just what incident he's referring to, but worries it would be tone deaf in this moment. Something clicks. Perhaps this is why he says life is too short to not make confessions of love. Of everything running through his head, it's only the last thing he doesn't question. He would work his way through grief, too. "I'm sorry," he offers again, hand still on Reno's shoulder. "Is there anything I can do?"
reno offers a smile, but it's weak, it's far from reno's wide 'full of life' smiles. it's... really sad. percy and sam are a bit of a sore topic, even if it's been a few years, and to reveal it to his boss -- well, yeah, of course there's not light in his eyes. "was." reno corrects, then pauses. "the news n shinra wrote it off as a freak accident. but being there, watchin' it happen n being stopped from doin anythin about it? real shitty time." he lets out a small laugh. he looks away from rufus, staring at anything but the blond. "it's not your fault. it's not exactly somethin' anyone drops on their boss. n' i didn't take time off for it so it's not like it would've been obvious."

"Oh... Wait, what?" Rufus looks at Reno with genuine shock. He isn't sure how many more surprise statements he can take in one day. "You're a father?" He can't just drop that and move on. "I didn't know. About any of that." He takes a moment, realizing just how disconnected he is from his subordinates lives and wondering if that was a mistake. "I'm sorry," he tells him, meaning it. This feels like some kind of failure on his part, though he struggles to put his finger on why. Perhaps it has something to do with the feeling Reno stirs in him when he looks at him like that.
reno laughs at rufus' response. was rufus offended that reno WASN'T attracted to him like that? "i'm asexual n' aromantic, dude. like i just... am not interested. most of the time. i had a partner n a kid, but..." he shakes his head. "also-- you have done nothing to seduce me. so maybe work on that n' i'll consider it. -- and, life is too short to not form attachments. you can't say you're living if you feel nothing, you know?" he bounces his leg, looking over at rufus. his gaze is softer. "maybe you need to learn to live a little."
