I just finished watching Dead Boy Detectives and loved it!!

I have a question about it, though:

There is a finnish painting called ”Lemminkäisen äiti” by artist Akseli Gallen-Kallela, which really reminded me of the washer woman painting !! :))

I was wondering if there was any chance that it was inspired by it or if it’s just my imagination :D? (Really cool either way)

(Here’s the painting, it’s about Lemminkäinen’s mother griefing the death of her son, based on Finland’s national epic Kalevala)

I personally have always loved that painting -- i first saw it in the Helsinki art museum in about 1997 and it was my second favourite painting there.

Okay! So originally, the wise son does say "has commanded us" and that changed over the centuries. But also the questions harken back to the Torah and the characters of the sons/children are reflections of the characters who asked the questions in the Torah. And a third thing to contemplate is that we are not told that these are kids, but sons of the host. The "children" of the host of our seder first night were 34 and 38 years old

Hm, I get what you're saying here and I understand how the text can be interpreted to be more favorable one way or another, but that wasn't exactly the point of my post, I guess? I was less criticizing the text itself and more using it as a jumping-off point to criticize certain approaches towards children (or indeed adults) who already feel excluded from their families/communities/etc - namely, the approach of berating them for excluding themselves rather than trying to reach out to them and understand that exclusion.

I.E. just projecting a bit, as suggested in the tags.
