I want to tell you guys a little story about safety online and my experience with online predators.
I used to model. Nothing big, though I did do a runway show once. I just kind of enjoyed doing it, and my mom would go with me (because I was a minor) to meet photographers. It was fun for me, and I still do it occasionally (but it’s been a few years).
There’s a website called Model Mayhem that’s good for connecting photographers, models, and MUAs with freelance work. You have to be 16 to sign up. I was 16 when I signed up, so I wasn’t lying there.
When you’re trying to break into modeling, it’s extremely competitive. Everyone is trying to sell you something (never go to a “modeling cruise” or some bullshit that costs money) even if you’re not serious about it being your career (I wasn’t, I knew that I would have to get into glamour modeling rather than fashion and I wouldn’t be able to do any of that work until I was at least 18+, as that type of work is more implied nude and fetish photography). So instead I found trades and got experience, because 1) I live in the midwest and 2) we didn’t have the money for me to do those big, glamorous things.
So when I got a message on Yahoo one day from someone claiming to be a photographer who found me on Model Mayhem (hereon referred to as MM) I didn’t think anything of it. This had happened before, generally wasn’t a big deal (though I did have a few people get upset claiming it wasn’t in my profile that I didn’t do nudes, even though it was).
They were very clever. They kept saying things like, “It’s a big opportunity”, “you’re very pretty and we want a pretty face”, and offering to pay me a lot of money. Like, thousands of dollars. It sounded too good to be true; I was barely experienced at all with modeling. Why did these men want to video chat with me?
Then he said, “There will sometimes be two people. Are you sure you can satisfy two men at once?”
And I caught on. I can’t believe I took that long, but you gotta understand - they talked like professionals. They used complete sentences, it wasn’t aggressive like someone on tinder or a guy who doesn’t take a hint at the bar - it was like they were conducting a business transaction. They were experienced. They’d done this before.
I said, “I don’t think i’m right for this, i’m 16.” I tried several times to tell them that I had changed my mind and was no longer interested. But they kept coming at me. They kept messaging me. They kept doing it until I literally abandoned my Yahoo account completely. It was incredibly unnerving.
That’s how I was almost duped into doing child pornography and what may have turned into sex trafficking - because I didn’t catch on at first. And who knows what they would’ve done with those videos had I agreed to it. I was being taken advantage of and exploited; I’m lucky that I noticed before it was too late.
All this is to say: sometimes an older person will present you with what looks like an opportunity. If they refuse to back off when you become uncomfortable, that’s a red flag. Pay attention to what they say and if they refuse to let an adult come with you to a proposed meeting, do not meet with them. Be very careful. Dangerous people are everywhere.
