‘Modern Times’ - mixed media on watercolour paper 14 x 21 cms- small! I enjoy changing scale, subject and media - say, for example, much more than dealing with flush flooding in the kitchen this morning.... This year my artwork seems to be in a permanent state of flux. I m experimenting all the time. I have inked up the sun in this little window, like the rain out there. May be it is a door, and not a window this time? I feel I could walk through it. Everybody’s Twenty One Minutes- That is what you are looking at. It s been a very intense few days alone in the studio working day and night to let my body and brain remember how I did these last summer. The process is slow, then ridiculously fast- to make these is a labour of love- undisrupted precise mixtures of brush, shake, hours of hot iron- I hate ironing at the best times- dance a little, and stargazing while waiting for it all to dry. Then you do it all over again. And naturally rising with the first lights again to print. I get absurdly nervous before I start- like when I used to race the tracks, there is no going back. You can’t pause time- in sunlight form- so there are no breaks, no tea, nor re takes, nor space for hesitation- each piece is an irreversible time representation in movement. It s as rewarding as exhausting. This one will be developing for another 24 hours till it reaches its ‘final’ form. Cyanotypes are archival material but if they fade with sunlight, you can put them to sleep in a quiet dark hiding place, sing them a song, and they come back to their Prussian blue initial days of glory. Time is relative- we live in an abstract past present future construct- but there is an unforgiving aspect of the work that captures my imagination, and thus my heart. Rain rain rain thank you, a forced few days to write and rest. I m guessing this one is bright enough eh? Just in time for sun to keep shining in the studio now he s decided to go some other hot place on the globe. What was I thinking doing a weather collaboration when one is living in the land of Turner’s capricious clouds? The blue background was accidental but it makes it ziiiiing and siiiiing. Shall I mount it in one? No clouds in my inside studio sky. Working with natural pigments is time consuming, patience pushing to exasperating levels- it s like watching a clock tick, a kettle boil- you get it- and control freak hair pulling, they have their own ideas on their personality developing for days to the final result. Prompted by ‘Blink’, a book that wonderful @estbest01 gave me to read when I saw her last, I m back pondering about our conscious decision making skills and intuition. So here are my round toes and ‘Wicked Problems, Wicked Possibilities’- the originals for an animated giff which instagram doesn’t like much alas, based on poster art and the infinite need to solve and resolve the just solved resolution, adapt, change. Start again. You solve one problem and another arises, you solve a problem for one and in doing so, create a problem for Simeón else. Yet all these impossible complexity allows for broader understanding of shifting perspectives- not just others but also our own- and interconnectedness if you allow yourself to see it. The piece also included a closed eye, as means to reflect in that we all have a blind spot. We blink and I see and just imagine if the entire world had changed in that brief second. It can all change in that blink of an eye. The work was part of a webinar with fantastic designers and artists from the RaM research group @soad_brighton @slucym @ben_peppiatt which I was lucky to take part in last summer. It s all perpetually changing. My grandfather used to say ‘only fools don’t ever change their mind’. ‘The Waves’ - charcoal conte and acrylic paint on watercolour paper. I am looking for something only I m not sure what - this piece didn’t talk to me for ages. It just sat silent and sulking on the wall asking me to do something. But I had no idea what it wanted so I walked passed it for weeks saying ‘sorry’. It is only after finishing Virginia Woolf’s book with this title that I let it take me and move move move- the book is easily one of the best and most beautiful pieces I have read- and I mean, EVER. It is hard to let go of control but surrendering is often the only thing you can do when you don’t know what, to do. Find your way along the way kind of. One can measure the passing of the seasons by how close to you the cat will sleep at night. Reassuringly, it is warm enough that he is at a cautious non asphyxiating distance- spring is springing. My dog in the other hand will always push against you his strong and slender fast frame, with some luck, hard enough to push you off the bed. But he can’t climb the steep step ladder to my ‘room’ -I say room but it is no such thing- perched at the top of this beautiful home with no doors that shelters me in its winged eaves up above, where I fall asleep to the sound of the rain amplified by the closeness to the dripping night sky above. Tomorrow I shall clean these wings or else we will drown in dust. It s time to listen to the renewing out there and enjoy the humans we have the freedom to meet outdoors on Monday. I miss our see you tomorrow’s. And talking of wings, late tonight I sent my mum this drawing of my hands. My studio is littered with limbs. To which she replied- ‘Your hands? Your wings...’ I love my mum. She is an incredible artist.
