The COVID-19 crisis reveals that China, America’s most powerful rival, has played a particularly harmful role in the current crisis, which began on its soil. Initially, that country’s lack of transparency prevented prompt action that might have contained the virus. Chinese officials initially punished citizens for “spreading rumors” about the disease. “They didn’t tell us the truth,” one medical team member said of the local authorities, “and from what we now know of the real situation then, they were lying to us." Now China’s propagandists are competing to create a narrative that obscures the origins of the crisis and that blames the United States for the virus. Dependence on China for crucial medical equipment throughout the pandemic has illuminated dangers in relying on China. Experts had warned of American dependence on key drug ingredients from China. The Wall Street Journal has reported that China is the only maker of key ingredients for certain classes of drugs, including established antibiotics that treat a range of bacterial infections such as pneumonia. American reliance on China for products we need in every category, is a national security concern. Americans should not depend on an authoritarian rival state for its citizens’ health—any more than the United States and other free and open societies should give Chinese companies, and by extension the Chinese Communist Party, control over communications infrastructure and sensitive personal data. Downwind foil. 3 years. It took 3 years to finally fly a foil with the wind. Physically, and by far, the most difficult thing I have ever done. Hours of dragging behind boats and jetskis to learn how to foil and hours more with the baddest mofo ever Christian Barcellos @onemauiday who taught me how to fly downwind with the wing. Great White Shark spotting with Darren Saletta from @monomoysportfishing and Wayne Davis as our spotting pilot. “Wayne is probably the best pilot in the air,” said Greg Skomal, Senior Marine Fisheries Biologist and Program Manager for the Massachusetts Shark Research Program. Wayne also flies for the Atlantic White Shark Conservancy @a_whiteshark spotting sharks for tagging. He spotted 7 sharks for us in an hour and a half and radioed down positions so we could power out to see them. They are incredible up close. They are there to feed on seals. Orcas have been spotted in these waters recently as well. The federal Marine Mammal Protection Act of 1972 outlawed seal killing. There are now an estimated 50,000 grey seals in the waters of Cape Cod. Dan Kelly from Chatham Municipal Airport took us up to spot some Great White sharks. The Shark Channel is a radio frequency set up for pilots to radio in sharks they spot while flying tours, close to swimmers at the beaches on the Cape. In the 1 hour flight we spotted 10 Great Whites some of which were only 50 yards from swimmers in the water. We radioed the sightings in using the channel and the lifeguards closed some beaches. We also spotted thousands of seals, 8 Humpback Whales, 10 Sunfish a few Finback whales and multiple massive schools of bait fish. The real story here is that since the seals became protected, the waters are thriving. As a result, the apex predator, killer whales, have been spotted in the area.
