It was pitch black outside. Peaceful.
At least, at the moment.
â
â⊠Sec. Hey, Second, wake up.â
Second groaned as his rest was interrupted by someone lazily shaking him awake. He was usually a deep sleeper, and he wouldâve ignored it either way, but something made it as if he had to be awake, slowly pulling away the thick blanket of sleep heâd wanted to grip so tightly to.
He puffed out a sigh as he begrudgingly blinked his eyes open. Oh well, I guess.
Upon waking, he noticed a dim light through his fuzzy vision. Squinting, he turned to focus on the one responsible.
â⊠Green?â
Said teen nodded, rubbing at his eyes tiredly; it looked like heâd woken up mere minutes ago.
Second sat up fully, blinking as he finally adjusted to the light. Green was using his phoneâs flashlight, he noted.
He threw his legs over the end of the bed. âWhat time is it?â he questioned, shaking the sleep out of his system.
Green looked down at his phone. â3:22.â
Sec blinked. âSeriously?â
âMhm.â
The older teenâs face scrunched up in confusion. It was hella early, past three in the morning. Why was he being woken up this early? Was it urgent?
The other caught on to this, the light emitting from his phone bouncing as he shifted. âI, uh, thought I heard something,â he explained, âWanted you to check with me.â
Sec processed this. What could he have heard? Their home was usually safe, so unless it was from outside, there was nothing that couldâve happened.
âAre you sure?â
âYeah. Er, I mean, I think? Iâm positive I donât exactly hear things here at home, if that makes senseâŠâ
He pondered on it for a moment, then stands up, stretching out his limbs. âAlright, Gigi, Iâll take your word.â Green perked up a little at that.
With Sec taking the lead, the two crept out of the room. Green suggested just scoping out until they either find what it was or confirm nothing was there, so thatâs the plan they agreed on.
The sudden clutter of items crashing to the ground caused them both to jump, Sec whipping his head around to find the source of the noise.
⊠Well, at least he knows for sure itâs something inside.
The two made eye contact, Green seeming more worried, and went off down the hallway.
Near the opening to the next room, Sec bumped into another person, looking down to find a drowsy Yellow. He seemed just as confused as them, having gone to find out what it was himself.
âI wasnât the only one that heard it, right?â he asked, receiving head shakes in response. He visibly sagged, âOh, goodâŠâ
Sec noticed he also looked a little tired, guessing he had been dozing off before the noise was heard.
Another crash, followed by worried murmurs.
Sec huffed and walked through, Green following close behind in order to provide light. âOh, I hope nothing important was broken,â Yellow thought aloud, sounding slightly distressed. âI liked some of the stuff in here!â
âIâm sure itâs fine - for the most part,â Sec retorted. âIt didnât sound too bad.â The other simply gave him an unimpressed look, and he suppressed the urge to snicker.
âSure, whatever you say.â Yellow had drawled in annoyance.
Back to the situation at hand, the three turned a corner, Sec signaling Green to shine the light ahead. He obliged and held his phone up.
⊠Nothing, really. There didnât seem to be anything out of order in this area.
They shifted to move again, doing so quietly. Green opened his mouth to say something, until-
Shrieking.
Green snapped his mouth shut.
They could hear shrieking.
It lasted for about three seconds, a second muffled voice trying to interfere with it, before it died down. The three shared a look.
That wasnât good.
They all rushed to where whatever place was closest, too many thoughts running through Secâs head - main living area.
Was it just Second, or did it seem to take longer than it shouldâve to get there?
Green skidded to a halt, aiming his light around frantically. He first looked at the left side of the room; nothing. Middle of the room; nothing- no, something. Someone.
âBlue?â Yellow heaved. âWhatâs going on?â
The older whipped around in surprise, before sighing, relieved. âOh, itâs just you.â At their questioning gazes, they straightened up again. âRight - I think somethingâs going on with Red. I heard some sort of crashing, came down to check, and they wonât get close to me. I think theyâre, like, sleeping? Or something?â
âOhâŠâ At this, Sec seemed to slump over slightly. Blue sent him a confused glance. âJust- we gotta get to âem.â They didnât seem satisfied with that response, but nodded anyways.
âThey ran off somewhere before I could properly get to them,â Blue informed. âCan you run in your sleep?â
âYes,â Yellow said, âIt happens more than youâd think.â The other looked mildly surprised.
Green said heâd stay back with Yellow to make sure nothing was broken, Sec and Blue agreeing. As they split up, Sec couldnât help but feel a little worried.
Thereâs a chance it couldâve just been sleepwalking, right? Maybe a little nightmare, but it never seemed any more serious than that. Is something wrong that they didnât know of? Red wouldâve told them about that, wouldnât they? He understands they donât exactly like being too babied with being the youngest, but that doesnât mean itâs worth bottling up.
Have they been bottling things up?
Oh, he hopes not. Itâd tear both of them apart from the inside out.
Itâs gone eerily quiet. He doesnât like that. Is Red awake now? He thinks theyâd come down to him and the others by then. Then why is it so quiet? Is it just overthinking?
Second really doesnât like the quiet.
Yeah, itâs like, almost four in the morning, but thereâs always a little chatter when all of them are awake. Not even Blue was talking, and he felt too nervous to start up a conversation.
Was it Redâs situation making him nervous, or was it the silence?
Maybe itâs both. The silence is almost deafening, and thatâs saying something. He spared a glance at Blue. They glanced back, giving him a wary grin.
He should stop asking so many questions.
Was he always like this when he got nervous?
⊠Oh. They canât even be answered anyways.
Downstairs, he thought. Maybe they managed to get downstairs.
A scream rang out from below, confirming his thought. Blue ran ahead immediately, Sec on their heels.
Upon running downstairs, skipping steps, almost tripping, a thud caught their attention. Blue flipped on a lamp, dull enough to provide enough light without it being blinding. They rushed forward while Sec stayed back a moment to let the gears turn in his head.
It took a second, ironic, but he was able to make out the figure now.
Red had push their self into a corner, sobs racking their body, yet their eyes remained unopened. They were slightly bent over, hitting their fist into the wall in desperation, unaware it was lifeless through whatever was flashing before their eyes. Their free hand was frantically tugging at anything on their body that they could, as if trying to find a way in.
Blue attempted to creep forward slowly, muttering words of reassurance, though it fell on deaf ears.
Green and Yellow eventually rushed in, Blue grabbing a blanket nearby. Another cry ripped its way from Redâs throat, and thatâs what snapped Sec out of his little daze. He winced.
âCâmon Red, itâs okayâŠâ Blue whispered, inching closer. Sec attempted to follow.
Eventually, Red lost their footing, Blue catching them before they fully fell to the floor. They wrapped the blanket around their body, huddling close, even with Redâs weak, futile protests.
Secâs heart clenched at the sight.
Red was usually bold and outgoing, the most extroverted, the most adventurous. They were pretty damn strong too - beating every single one of them besides Second.
So, needless to say, he felt a little pain seep into his system. Emotional. Maybe a little guilt, too.
Sure, it was known Red often gets nightmares, but they usually fight it off themselves or seek help from one of them, but it never went to this extent.
Hell, was this even a nightmare?
Second didnât know. He didnât like the fact he didnât know. He wanted, needed to know.
What was he supposed to do, leave Red here to deal with his own problems when thereâs clearly supposed to be a solution to this? Leave them sitting in the dark, figure out how to handle their trauma alone, when he knows thereâs a way to fix this? When they all know?
You had to be crazy.
Second moved to sit on the opposite side of Red, Green and Yellow settling down in front of them. Softly speaking comfort, they waited for the episode to pass.
Slowly but surely, Redâs eyes began to open, yet before anyone could even move to react, they went wide-eyed, jolting and instinctively beginning to force them away. âStop, stop! Get off! Get off me!â
The others startled, Green being the first to recover. âHey, Red, itâs us! Calm down, youâre safe! Youâre home!â he called, trying to hover his hands over their face, though to no avail. The panicked movement made it impossible to do so. He pulled back.
âI donât think they recognize itâs us,â Yellow commented, frowning. âNight terror. It happens.â Sec looked back down, troubled.
The four attempted to calm them down again in futility, Yellow getting kicked in the shoulder while Blue managed to get swiped across the face.
âGET OFF! DONâT HURT ME!â Red cried again, though their voice was becoming hoarse from previous wails. âNO!â
Green winced, quickly pulling forward to wrap his arms around them in a hug. He got pushed for a moment, then the actions slowly weakened, hands only hovering over his back. Redâs chest heaved with sobs that seemed caught in his throat, reducing them to violent shudders as he struggled to get air into his lungs.
âRedâŠ?â Sec said softly, and that was all it took for the younger to tremble and start crying all over again, this time in utter fear and guilt.
â
It took almost half an hour to calm Red down, but it worked. Their weeping had been toned down to hiccups, refusing to look anyone in the eyes.
âI-Iâm sorry, Iâm sorryâŠâ they mumbled, curling their hands into fists in the fabric of their pants. Blue and Sec rubbed their back slowly, saying they had nothing to be sorry for.
Green had started playing a soft melody from his phone, originally getting a stare from Yellow as Red cracked a smile. They appreciated that.
âI d-didnât mean to wake you,â they stuttered, âDidnât think it would get t-this bad.â
âDonât even worry about it, okay?â Yellow assured, placing a hand on their own. Red wanted to resist it, but ultimately gave in to the warmth it sent to their body. Theyâd always been one comforted by contact.
They wiped at their tear-stained face, wanting to get rid of any evidence left of the previous event. It didnât quite help, and Sec moved their hand away anyways.
âWas there a reason you avoided us?â he asked, patting their shoulder. They shrunk back a bit, considering their options.
âI-I mean- I never really wanted to intrudeâŠâ Red started, â⊠everyoneâs got their own problems, didnât wanna.. âmess it up,â I guess?â
They sounded uncertain, like they didnât know the answer either.
âNevermind that, itâs late,â Blue remarked. âIâm beat, and I know damn well you are too. Itâs, like, five in the morning.â
â4:56,â Green declared.
âSure, whatever.â
Red rubbed the back of their neck in embarrassment. âSorry, I didnât mean-â
Sec covered their mouth before they could spit another apology out.
â
The group decided to all pile into Secâs bed, agreeing on it when Red silently admitted they didnât want to sleep alone.
It was warm. Safe. Limbs tangled, arms wrapped around each other. It wasnât new, but it was nicer. It made Red feel as if they were protected in a soft space, with soft padding and soft intentions.
And if they all snuggled a little closer together that night, nobody mentioned it the next morning.
