It’s the adults.
The adults are stressful.
The kids are fine. They can be challenging too, but I understand them and don’t really “carry” the stress of having a bad day with a child home with me.
I was prepared for the children.
I was not prepared for the adults in this field. The drama. The backstabbing. The immaturity. The politics. The classism. The racism.
I expected for the adults in this field to have their heads on straight because there is so much we’re responsible for, but toxic coworkers are much more exhausting and baffling than I could have ever expected.
I’ve seen teachers act sweet towards immigrant/refugee children then complain about having to teach “illegals” in the break room. I’ve seen them actively try to get one another fired and ruin each other’s career through gossip and “tattle-telling” to admins. I’ve seen them try to defend “All Lives Matter” rhetoric in a school of 90% POC.
Of course not EVERYONE is like this, most people AREN’T, but I don’t think there’s a single school without individuals like this.
Don’t get caught up with these people. They make the whole field, the whole WORLD seem much bleaker than it really is. Their negativity is contagious and being around it more often than necessary will only lead to early burnout.
Find your people. Find the real ones, the ones you can in this field you can trust and stick with them.
