Will you please list all of Arjun's (and Karna's, if possible) names and their meanings? THANK YOU! :D
From what I’ve read from different versions and of course K.M Ganguli; these are the names that are used to address Arjun and Karna throughout the text. (Note: I’m not including adjectives like Mahanayak, Purushuttam or Daanveer, Maharathi, simply because they are never used as a name to address Arjun or Karna).
Arjun
Arjun ~ Generally means pure, ‘white’ or even ‘silver’ in Sanskrit. Probably why most TV shows depict him as wearing only white, and in BRC he wore a silver crown ;)
Dhananjaya ~ Bringer of fortune, winner of wealth. He received this name after returning from collecting tribute all over Aryavarta, before the Rajsuya yagya took place.
Paarth ~ Son of Pritha aka Kunti
Vijay ~Always victorious in battle.
Phalguna/Phalguni ~ Born under the Uttara Phalguna constellation.
Krishna ~ Named by his father Pandu, out of love for his son with the dusky complexion and pure nature. Due to their physical similarities, Arjun’s cousin Krishna, and Arjun himself are referred to collectively as “the two Krishnas” throughout the text.
Savyasachi ~ Ambidextrous, he can wield the Gandiva in either hand.
Jishnu ~ Unconquerable and fierce. According to KMG he is also called Jishnu for being Indra’s son.
Kirti ~ Named after the crown “resplendent as the Sun” bestowed upon Arjun by his father Indra, after defeating the celestial Nivatakavacha demons.
Vibhatsu ~ Never committing a detestable deed on the battlefield
Gudakesha ~ Having mastered sleep, he can fight well into the night, without needing to rest.
Shwethavahan ~ During battle, he always rides with white horses yoked to his chariot.
Kapi-dhwaja ~ The warrior blessed with Lord Hanuman on his chariot flag during the Kurukshetra
Karna
Karna ~ Generally means ‘ears’. According to KMG, he is called Karna after cutting off his earrings and armour.
Vasusena~ He was given this name by his adoptive parents, on account of being ‘born with wealth’,with regards to his golden earrings and armour.
Radheya ~Son of Radha, his adoptive mother.
Vaikartana ~One who belongs to the Sun. According to KMG, Vaikartana is also very similar in meaning to Karna.
Vrisha ~Literally meaning bull in Sanskrit.
