The real turning point for Snow and Lucy Gray's relationship is when he wishes she were still caged at the Capitol so he could at least know where she was and what she was doing. That was the moment it all really clicked. This wasn't love, it was obsession, control.

The way, before Katniss volunteered as tribute, the last time Snow heard that word (katniss) were Lucy Gray's last words to him. The way the only reason he knew what her name meant was because of Lucy Gray. Do you think he thought about how Katniss was named after a plant that grew around the very same lake he last saw Lucy Gray? Do you think he realised she was named after the plants around that literal lake? And then, during the qarterquell, do you think he realised that Katniss must have learned how to swim in the very same lake that still holds the evidence of his crimes and the last shred of his humanity?

I want to know what happened to Tigris between Ballad and Mockingjay. I want to know what it was that Coriolanus did to her for her to smile wide when Katniss declared that she would murder him. This girl who loved her baby cousin more than anything, this girl who adored him and forgave him for killing Bobbin because he had to. Did she find out about Sejanus? Lucy Gray? When did her view of him switch? Katniss assumes she hates him because he took her out of the games as a stylist. Maybe she hates him because she saw what he was like when she was a stylist. Tigris was such a sweet girl and I think her making over tributes (making people over being her love language) would open her eyes to just how horrific the games are. And just how horrific her cousin is for not stopping them when he has the power to.

what if the 'you love me, real or not real" question at the end was the end of a gradual progression of more and more intimate questions.

like, when katniss first joins in on the real or not real game, she talks about how excruciating it is for her (mj, 232). and how they keep the conversation on very surface level topics. like the color of her dresses on the victory tour (mj, 232). or the name of their math teacher (mj, 232).

but maybe, as everlark grows back together, they start asking more and more intimate questions. the kind that can only be said in a whisper.

like katniss whispering from the warmth of peeta's arm, 'you think i am pretty, real or not real.' and peeta reaching through his memories to find the perfect response, ' you are the only beautiful thing that could possibly be a weakness for me'

or peeta having to look down at the dinner table as he questions if, 'you liked kissing me, real or not real'. and katniss, gently lifting his chin up, looks him in the eyes and confirms 'very much so' before kissing him until he smiles again.

and questions like that slowly build up until, in peace of their love, katniss finally confirms her love for peeta. and how it could have only been him.

k so that poll about where Katniss and Peeta live once they're together is going around and I'm not here to tell anyone their headcanon is wrong but I keep seeing one thing in some tags that bothers me and that's the idea that Peeta's house doesn't have any ghosts, and the implication that Katniss is suffering the loss of Prim more than Peeta is suffering the loss of his family. His entire family.

I know his family didn't live with him, I know he had a bad relationship with his mom and his relationship with the rest of his family is a mystery, but that doesn't mean his house doesn't have ghosts. We don't know exactly what happened there besides the fact that he lived alone. His brothers could have come by to cheer him up, bringing cards to play poker and slap jack. He and his dad could have worked on new baking recipes in his kitchen. And look, even abusive parents aren't always terrible, and maybe his mom was trying to repair their relationship when he got back. We just don't know! And even if no one ever stepped a foot in his house the whole time, that is a whole other ghost--a feeling that he was never home, a house of his nightmares and pain and loneliness following returning from the Games.

I get that Katniss's loss was devastating and she externally reacts to it more than Peeta, who tries to hide the effect of his trauma, and I understand the logic that Peeta's house is easier or he would stuff down the pain to ease Katniss's, but he has ghosts in his house, too.

do you all ever think about how katniss was so afraid to fall in love. because she saw love as a weakness (thg, 135). and she didn't want to become like her mother (thg, 27). because she didn't want to stop living when her lover died (thg, 261).

and do you ever think about how katniss justifies her resolve to sacrifice herself for peeta saying that she needs him to live (cf, 100). because she would be broken beyond repair if he died (cf, 100).

and that she frequently explains that her life would be unliveable if he died (thg, 343; cf, 34). and how she lost the will to live when he was captured (cf, 110). and how she decided that life was no longer worth living when he came back hijacked (mj, 171).

because i do. a lot.

I just can’t get over how intimate the details Katniss recalls about Peeta are in the famous “you’re a painter” dialogue: how they speak to moments of vulnerability and mundanity, how he sleeps, how he eats, and how he dresses … she noticed and treasured it all

I would tell myself that it gets easier

But then it gets worse again

And I feel like such a liar

It's a cycle

Of feeling better

And then something small

And I'm back to where I was

Or worse

And it makes it impossible to breathe

And there's someone new to blame

And it turns out the things I thought were good

We're never good at all

And I can't look at them anymore
