If you look at pictures of (or if you are lucky, real) goats, sheep, horses, or any artiodactyl, you have probably noticed that their pupils, unlike that of other animals, are elongated and horizontal.
Why are their eyes shaped like this? It’s to avoid predators.
The vision of artiodactyls was shaped by tens of millions of years as prey animals, to increase their ability to perceive predators soon enough to allow them to escape. This resulted in 2 main adaptations : Their eyes being positioned on the sides of their heads, allowing a larger field of vision, and horizontal pupils.
This horizontal shape has 2 main functions :
It increases their field of vision, optimizing their ability to scan their surroundings without having to turn their heads.
It allows for an increased vision accuracy at ground level and at the horizon, which is the level which most predators will come from.
This horizontal shape sacrifices their ability for depth vision but offers a near-perfect panoramic vision scanning the horizon effortlessly and permanently.
If this is correct, then what happens when these animals move their head down to graze? As one would expect, their eyes rotate in order to keep the pupil perfectly horizontal!
We should tweet Elon Musk to ask him where he is with his genetically modified catgirls
Fun Fact Thursday
All mammals have whiskers, except for cetaceans, monotreme (who are quite weird, to say the least) and humans.
If evolution is indeed true, what happened to our whiskers?
Worry not.
While you don’t have the honestly practical hairs that your cat parads with, you still have the muscles. A team of scientists, in 2007, was able to find and describe these muscle structures in humans.
These muscle fascicles, like in our mammalian cousins, sprout from the Orbicularis Oris muscle, that we use to move our lips, and connect to hair follicles in the upper lip.
That being said, it may be too soon to decide to grow your mustache, in an attempt to detect your way through your room when you wake up thirsty at night. These fascicles were only found in 1/3 of human specimens studied, and it is unclear whether they are still functional.

Right so today in class my math teacher, a human who is taller than our door and probably more awkward than it, casually mentioned how he isn’t married and how he never really felt attraction to any gender.
So a pan girl in my class puts up her hand and asks if he was Asexual.
One confused state and three queer people explanations later…
HE WAS BEYOND EXCITED TO FIND OUT THAT HE WAS VALID AND SEEN AS AN ACTAUL HUMAN TO THE LGBT COMMUNITY.
I shit you not.
My way too tall and way too smart and way too dorky and way too awkward maths teacher lived his entire life thinking that he was strange and abnormal for not feeling any attraction to anyone.
And a class of insane grade elevens changed that.
