Do you think John's sadistic ways could have changed if he had convinced the deputy to join the cult

I’m a little torn. Part of me wants to say no, that the only thing that could have helped him was intensive therapy and hospitalization and proper mental healthcare–but that’s in an ideal world, where he could have gotten the help he needed. But in the context of the game’s world, using that universe and those rules, I’d say… maybe.

Converting the Deputy would have been a significant personal achievement for John, not just because hey, look, Joseph, he did it! He did the thing! But also because it’d be proof that he could walk a razor thin line between indulging his darker impulses and reining himself in and succeed. He wouldn’t have to resort to the old methods of cruelty. There are other ways to emerge free besides struggling across an ocean of pain.

You would be his pride and joy, similar to how Joseph sees you in the ending where you’re in the bunker together. But more than just pride and joy, the Deputy would be John’s achievement. You’d be his salvation–you’d be his saving grace. You would be to him what Faith (the concept and the women) are to Joseph: You would be a symbol, an ikon, a figure of worship and fear.

I think John would be incredibly pleased with this, and kind of terrified. That’s an incredible amount of power over him. Sure, he could rightly take credit for converting you, but then the next question is, “Now what?” What does that mean for him, what value/purpose/worth does John have now that the Deputy is on their side? Well, there’s always sinners who need cleansing and atonement, sure, but… where does that leave you and him? Where does that leave him?

Maybe Joseph and the Deputy could use this to wear John down, to show him that his methods don’t have to be monstrously extreme in order to get results. Maybe they would use this to refocus John’s efforts less on mortification of the flesh, but in forgiveness. In listening to people, in consoling them, and in forgiving them. Maybe Joseph would encourage John and the Deputy to work together in the Cleansing, the Confessing, and the Atonement. And maybe this close association, and the Deputy acting as both proof of John’s success and a lighter counterbalance to his darker urges, would be enough to settle him down. Maybe the Deputy’s simple existence in the Project would act as a reminder of John’s greatest shame and also how not even he was beyond love and forgiveness.

And maybe that would be enough.
