DEJ- Sense of Justice!!
Quote: “He made me start off on the wrong foot… He didn’t have any lunch”. (Chpt. 3. Page 30)
Scout believes that people should be punished for their actions. She feels that when people do something wrong or if they were the starting cause of a situation, they should be punished for it. Scout tried to defend Walter Cunningham in school. She tried to tell her teacher about his problem and how he couldn’t take money from her. The teacher Miss Caroline said he had enough of Scout and she got in trouble. Her teacher hit her with the ruler and made her stand in the corner. This made Scout take her anger out on the kid she was defending. She saw Walter in the schoolyard and ran up to him to start fighting him. Scout thought that because it was Walter’s situation, he was responsible for what consequences she faced. She was beating him up, until her brother Jem came and made her stop. She blamed everything on Walter. Scout said Walter was the reason she got in trouble because she was defending him. Scout is showing that she believes individuals are responsible for their own actions and problems. Even when trying to defend someone, it’s still there problem. Scout shows that her sense of justice is everyone deserves to be punished for doing wrong. She also believes everyone is independent or an individual, so they have to face the consequences alone. Scout wants people to have consequences for any situations that was theirs. Scout’s sense of justice is being punished for wrongdoings.

Hi again! Today was officially the last day of going to Mrs. Dubose’s house. It was awful going there everyday for a month. She really made us go for an extra week. Let me tell you the story of why Jem had to read to Mrs. Dubose everyday. So we were walking home one day and Mrs. Dubose started her rant about us and our lives. What really set Jem off was when Mrs. Dubose said something really rude about Atticus. She said “your father’s no better than than the n’s and trash he works for!” that set Jem over the top. He went into Mrs. Dubose’s garden and ripped up all her flowers. He had to go back to Mrs. Dubose’s house and apologize. Jem’s punishment was to go to her house everyday after school for a month and read to her. I decided to go with Jem everyday. It was really not fun but I didn’t want to leave Jem alone there. But all of that is now over thank god because today was the last day. Well bye everyone. Scout!

Okay I have a story. There is this lady named Mrs. Henry Lafayette Dubose. She is really mean and rude. She lives alone except for her assistant who is a negro girl. She always says something rude to Jem and I. It’s literally impossible to go to town without passing her house. Well, unless of course we wanted to walk a mile out of our way. Since she was very old, she stayed in bed most of the time or was in a wheelchair. Jem and I really didn’t like her. No, Jem and I hated her. Mrs. Dubose always had something to say about the way we behaved. She said we would grow up to amount to nothing. We tried walking across the street, which made her scream louder for everyone else around  to hear. Jem had called our father Atticus once yesterday, and her reaction was apoplectic. She talked about our life without our mother and about the decisions our father makes. Mrs. Dubose said father let us run wild. Mrs. Dubose talks too much about our personal lives and that’s why we hate her. But not father. He says she is entitled to her own opinions and can say and do what she wants. I don’t get why father doesn’t say anything to Mrs. Dubose when she disrespects him. I really hate her. She is vicious. Just remember she is not a nice lady at all! She’s the worst. Bye, Scout.

I have something to share. I just realized something. Atticus is old. Jem and I had asked him yesterday why he was so old. He told us he got started late. I don’t know what that means but oh well. We thought that must be why he has many abilities and he is very manly. Father is much older than the kids parents at our school. When Jem asks him to play football he says he is too old for that. Other father is really basic and regular. He doesn’t do anything that would be admirable to anyone. He just works in an office and that’s all. Also, father’s nearly blind. He wears glasses and can hardly see in his left eye. He doesn’t do anything like the other kids fathers. They hunt, fish, play poker, drink or smoke. He read at home in the living room. That was all. Anyways word got around school that I wouldn’t fight anymore because Atticus won’t let me. That’s actually not true. I won’t fight publicly for Atticus but family was private grounds. The school keeps talking about my father defending a man named Tom Robinson. It’s really aggravating me. I don’t get why people care what my father does and I don’t get why he still defends this man when people say he shouldn’t. It’s all so confusing and annoying. All I know is father said don’t get mad people talk about him. Well that’s all I wanted to share. My father’s old and I just realized. Also, don’t fight, don’t get upset and father’s different. Till next time bye, Scout.

School kids are the worst!
Hello again! This kid at school Cecil Jacobs is the worst. He thinks he can talk about Atticus like that. No way! I had to fight him but Jem made me stop. He was calling my father a n- defender. He was yelling it for the whole world to hear. I did not believe that about my father. No he wasn’t, and so what if he was? My father could do whatever he wanted and no one could talk about it. Especially not Cecil Jacobs. This kid is always trying to test my patience. I always want to fight him when he says things. The only reason I don’t is because Atticus tells me not to and Jem. I just spoke to father about it and he told me he did defend those people. He said do not get upset about what someone says about him because it didn’t matter. Atticus said people tell him all the time that he shouldn’t defend them, but he still does because he wants to. He said we won’t win but he still will try. I don’t get why he wants to fight knowing he’ll end up losing. This is all confusing to me. I don’t understand why father wants to go against the town to defend these people that have nothing to do with him. Atticus thinks I’m too young to understand completely but I think I understand enough. Anyways we had a long conversation on this. Now I’m going to bed. So until next time, bye, Scout.

Hello again! Something terrible has happened! Old Mrs. Radley died. Father went over to the Radley's house and told us she died of natural causes. Jem and I thought Boo finally got to her. Father said he didn’t see Boo Radley when he went. We were hoping he did. Oh well! I guess no one will see him anytime soon, or ever again. … The day after, today it started to snow. I thought the world was gonna end. Now we are over at Miss Maudie’s house. We are using her snow to bring to our yard to create something. Jem says we will make a snowman. I hope it turns out good. I will come right back when we are done… We are done and the snowman kind of looks like Mr. Avery. Now we are going to wait for father to come home and see the snowman. I bet he’ll think it looks like someone. Now let’s see what he thinks… When father got home he said we had to change our snowman because of who it looked like. He said it wasn’t very nice. I guess that’s okay, the snowman is good enough not looking like our neighbors. Today was a very fun day but now I’m tired. I’ll go eat and go off to bed. Goodbye, Scout.

The second grade is not that bad. Jem told me I would start learning when I reached the sixth grade, like he is. Anyways, on the way home Jem and I pass by this knot- hole tree. We’ve been seeing things left in it. Yesterday we found a ball of gray twine. Jem told me not to take it because it belonged to someone. He said we would come back in two days and if no one took it, I can have it.. . we went back and it’s still there… We went today and it was still there. I was so happy that Jem took it for me. After that everything we found in the hole, we claimed as ours. We only found things during school time not in the summertime. We also found a pack of chewing gum and a pocket watch. We asked father how much it would cost for it, but he said only $10. Jem and I wanted to write a letter to whoever kept putting things in the tree-hole… here I am again and I am so mad! Someone put cement in the tree and we can’t get gifts anymore. It was Mr. Radley. I am so mad. I liked those gifts. That’s all for now. See you soon, Scout.

It’s already back to next summer. Well technically the end of the summer. Guess who’s back? Dill! But he’s leaving soon because school is going to start soon. The school year last year had went by pretty fast. My plan to be homeschooled failed but it’s okay because next year is a new grade! Anyways now as I said it’s summer. Dill is finally back and I missed him! But yesterday we were in a sticky situation. We all snuck into the back of the Radleys house gates. We had to spit on the gate so we could go over without it making noise. I was really scared that we’d get caught. Jem was only doing it to impress Dill because Dill said he was scared. I did not want to be apart of it so I kept complaining. Jem told me I could leave if I wouldn’t be quiet. I was thinking about it but I didn’t want to leave Jem and Dill. I had a really bad feeling about disturbing the Radleys home. Something scary happened. We saw a shadow coming towards us that made us run as fast as we could. I was the first to see, but didn’t realize it was a person at first. Then Dill saw and finally Jem. We ran to the fence by the schoolyard. Lucky we got away and made it back home. Well actually we didn’t go home. We went to meet up with everyone outside because something happened with the Radleys. We pretended not to know what was going on. Jem also lost his pants when we were running from the Radley house. We lied and said Dill taught us a new game - strip poker. All the adults bought it even Atticus, thankfully!! In the night time Jem went back to get his pants. I couldn’t do it, I’d be too scared. Jem told me to stay in the house, so it didn’t even matter. When he got it, Jem said they were sewn up like someone knew he was coming back. That’s creepy to me but at least no one found out what we did. Well that’s it for now. See you soon, Scout!

Its that time of the year again. School! I am so excited, I’ve been waiting for school to start all summer long. Jem took me to school on the first day instead of father. He told me Jem would love to show me my classroom. My teacher is Miss Caroline. She is different and kind of mean. She makes me go in the front of the class, pat me with the ruler and then make me stand in the corner. School is okay except for that. Anyways, this year I get out earlier than Jem. That means I have to walk home alone. When I pass the Radley home, I bolt down the block. I don’t like going pass that house but that way gets me home. My teacher said to tell my father to stop teaching me. When we both were home that night I told him. She doesn’t want me to learn that way. Miss Caroline wants me to follow only her way of teaching. Atticus told me that I could learn in secret. So don’t tell my teacher but he will still teach me some things. I don’t know if this plan will work out. I think Miss Caroline will still think I’m learning by someone, even if I wasn’t. Miss Caroline got annoyed by me before and I knew it. I want to leave school now. I know I’ve been waiting for school to start, but now I rather be home. My teacher doesn’t like me and the kids are just different. I would be home instead of at school if it weren’t for Atticus. This year is not going so good and I don’t like it. Maybe I can convince my father to let me stay home and be homeschooled like him and uncle Jack. This plan actually might work! Well bye for now, hopefully no more school.
Scout!

I’m back and guess what?! It’s summertime! Well summer already started it will soon be over in about two weeks or so. Anyways, we have a new friend and his name’s Charles Baker Harris, but we all call him Dill. He lives with his Aunt Miss Rachel Haverford. She lives right near us. Jem and I met Dill when we saw him on the porch watching us, so we went over to see who it was. From there on we’ve been playing together ever since. He is going to be coming every summer. Dill is very nosy and curious. He asks about the Radleys a lot even though we tell him no one bothers them and we best not start now. Dill’s the reason Jem and I are even becoming intrigued by the Radleys. He gave us the idea to make Boo Radley come out. We hear many stories about the Radleys from Atticus and Miss Stephanie. I never see any Radley but Mr. Radley. Jem and I see him everyday when he is on his way to work. I’ve heard Boo Radley was a bad kid and he’s been locked in that house for years. I could not stay in my house for years, I’d go mad! People said Boo Radley became associated with the Cunninghams who were bad and did whatever they wanted. They didn’t really do anything too bad but it was bad enough for the town to recognize it. All I’m saying is Dill is too curious and I don’t want to get involved with those families. He’s trying to get Jem to touch the house and bother them, but I want no part of it. I’ll just stand and watch. Dill’s not too bad though, just curious that’s all. Well he will soon be gone to go to school since summer is ending. I can’t wait until school starts, so goodbye! Scout.

Hello! It’s Scout
I’m Jean Louise Finch aka Scout. My father Atticus, my brother Jem and I have moved to this town known as Maycomb. My father practices economy more than anything. He made a income from the law. My father is related to everyone in this town of Maycomb by someway. Right now Maycomb is a tired old town. The streets after it rains are gruesome to look at. The look of the buildings are just blinding. Everything about Maycomb makes you want to leave and never return, but my father insist here we can have a good life. Everyone in this town shuffles around and moves slowly. We live on the main residential street in town, with our cook Calpurnia. She’s different from the others, she squints a lot and always tries to boss me around. She always makes me get in trouble because of how I behave, and of course my father takes her side every time. Our mother died when I was 2 and Jem was 6. I don’t really know she is but Jem likes to tell me stories about her. Right now I am 6 and summer is approaching. I can’t wait til summertime, school’s really annoying and boring. Anyways, I gotta go eat now, Calpurnia’s scolding downstairs calling us to eat. See you when summertime comes! Bye for now, Scout.
