Symbolism was an artistic and literary movement, most prominent in France, Russia, and Belgium. The symbolist movement began in the late 19th century; it was a response to naturalism and realism, choosing to focus on spiritual and psychological experiences rather than the dull drone of day-to-day life.

The most influential precursor to the symbolists was Charles Baudelaire, whose poetry volume Les Fleurs du mal and translations of the works of Edgar Allan Poe left a deep impression on the budding movement.

Above all, symbolism valued confusion of the senses and creating new meanings to existing objects and ideas. Symbolism believed that the purpose of art is to depict that which cannot be depicted; by using symbols to signify concepts that cannot be conveyed in simple terms, symbolists hoped to create a more accurate image of the ineffable than matter-of-fact descriptions ever could.

Notable symbolists include Paul Verlaine, Arthur Rimbaud,Jurgis Baltrušaitis, Innokenty Annensky, Maximilian Voloshin, Siamanto, and Rachilde.

Pia Sundhage had an unbelievably successful career as a member of the Swedish national football team, winning the 1984 UEFA Championship. In 2007, she became head coach of the US Women’s National Team. She coached the team to two consecutive Olympic gold medals (2008, 2012) and was awarded 2012 FIFA World Coach of the Year. She currently serves as head coach for the Swedish Women’s National Team. 

But the reason that women’s football is still unknown is because it’s not on television and not widely publicized for a wide majority of the leagues in the world.
