How to Tell If That Post of Advice Is AI Bullshit
Right, I wasn't going to write more on this, but every time I block an obvious AI-driven blog, five more clutter up the tags. So this is my current (April 2024) advice on how to spot AI posts passing themselves off as useful writing advice.
No Personality - Look up a long-running writing blog, you'll notice most people try to make their posts engaging and coming from a personal perspective. We do this because we're writers and, well, we want to convey a sense of ourselves to our readers. A lot of AI posts are straight-forward - no sense of an actual person writing them, no variation in tone or text.
No Examples - No attempts to show how pieces of advice would work in a story, or cite a work where you could see it in action. An AI post might tell you to describe a person by highlighting two or three features, and that's great, but it's hard to figure out how that works without an example.
Short, Unhelpful Definitions - A lot of what I've seen amount to two or three-sentence listicles. 'When you want to write foreshadowing, include a hint of what you want foreshadowed in an earlier chapter.' Cool beans, could've figured that out myself.
SEO/AI Prompt Language Included - I've seen way too many posts start with "this post is about..." or "now we will discuss..." or "in this post we will..." in every single blog. This language is meant to catch a search engine or is ChatGPT reframing the prompt question. It's not a natural way of writing a post for the average tumblr user.
Oddly Clinical Language - Right, I'm calling out that post that tried to give advice on writing gay characters that called us "homosexuals" the entire time. That's a generative machine trying to stay within certain parameters, not an actual person who knows that's not a word you'd use unless you were trying to be insulting or dunking on your own gay ass in the funniest way possible.
Too Perfect - Most generative AI does not make mistakes (this is how many a student gets caught trying to use it to cheat). You can find ways to make it sound more natural and have it make mistakes, but that takes time and effort, and neither of those are really a factor in these posts. They also tend to have really polished graphics and use the same format every time.
Maximized Tags (That Are Pointless) - Anyone who uses more than 10 one-word tags is a cop. Okay, fine, I'm joking, but there's a minimal amount of tags that are actually useful when promoting a post. More tags are not going to get a post noticed by the algorithm, there is no algorithm. Not everyone has to use their tags to make snarky comments, but if your tags look like a spambot, I'm gonna assume you're a spambot.
No Reblogs From The Rest of Writblr - I'm always finding new Writblr folks who have been around for awhile, but every real person I've seen reblogs posts from other people. We've all got other stuff to do, I'm writing this blog to help others and so are they, the whole point of tumblr is to pass along something you think is great.
While you'll probably see some variation in the future - as people get wise to obviously generated text, they'll try to make it look less generated - but overall, there's still going to be tells to when something is fake.
I don't have any real advice for what to do about this (other than block those blogs, which is what I do). Like most AI bullshit, I suspect most of these blogs are just another grift, attempting to build large follower counts to leverage or sell something to in the future. They may progress past these tattletale features, but I'm still going to block them when I see them. I don't see any value in writing advice compiled from the work of better writers who put the effort in when I can just go find those writers myself.

“I feel very strongly that if historical romance can give women a happy ending, it can give queer people a happy ending. M/f historical romance doesn’t tie itself in knots over the likelihood of the rake having syphilis, the terrible dentistry, the lice, the prolapsed uterus after multiple pregnancies, the prospect of death in childbed, or the horrifying legal discrimination against married women. We don’t close the book on the wedding scene reflecting that the heroine can now be legally raped, has just lost all her property to her husband…and would be vanishingly unlikely to obtain a divorce. Historical romance readers aren’t stupid; we know this stuff, but we choose to believe our heroine will be one of the lucky ones. And I don’t see why we can’t extend that happy glow to other stories, too. If women’s lives don’t have to be blighted by social oppression in romance, neither do those of people of color or queer people. Moreover, human nature doesn’t change. A lot of what we read about LGBT people in history is appalling because the records we have are the legal documents, the newspaper reports, the accounts of people who were victimized. We don’t generally have the hidden stories of the people who lived under the radar…. But we know…people we’d now call gay, bi, trans have always existed and [that] as a matter of statistics plenty of them must have lived and died without ever coming to the law’s attention. Which is not to hand-wave the horrors of the past but only to say that horror isn’t the only story, and it’s not an acceptable reason to deny marginalized people their happy-ever-after.”

Do you ever re-read a story you've written and have no memory of writing it? And also it really doesn't seem like something you'd ever be interested in? And it doesn't read like something you'd written because frankly, if anyone should know how you write, it's you. But this does not, in fact, seem like your writing? So then you check again to see that you did actually write this baffling thing, and the only way forward is to go 'huh' and never think of it again. Just me?

You know what I just realized? No one ever told Neville of Sirius innocence. Yet he went to go on the rescue mission in fifth year when he thought he was in danger.
That means Neville literally just saw how worried Harry was, and just made a quick, and correct, decision that Sirius must be innocent. Neville dropped everything to try and help save someone he didn’t even know because his friends were worried about that person!
I’d declare that Neville is the kindest dude in that series if I didn’t already know that. And overall, Neville doesn’t get near as much appreciation as he should.

Fic rec:
After a nearly 10 year absence from writing H/D – Faithwood is back. I was lucky to be her beta on this monster and it's amazing. If you loved her writing before, you're going to be thrilled. If you aren't familiar with her – you're in for a treat. It's 10 chapters and she's posting one every week (or sooner if she can). Go…read…leave her love for coming back!!
Title: Beholden Author: faithwood Pairing: Draco/Harry Rating: Expicit Length: about 100k when she's done posting Genre/Content: Hurt/Comfort, Romance, 8th Year, enemies to friends to lovers, injured Harry Warnings: none Summary: Draco Malfoy might not be a killer, but it turns out he's an effective painkiller. If stopping pain was all Draco's touch did, things might not be so complicated, but either way Harry can't afford to be choosy. Beholden

Reasons to get an AO3 account as a reader
Every time I see someone who reads lots of fic on AO3 but doesn’t have an account, I have to wonder if they realize how many features AO3 has just for readers. This is not an exhaustive list, but here are a few (and I’ve saved the best for last!):
Bookmarks - You probably know these exist because you’ve seen them on fic you read. But did you know that you can:
Make private bookmarks that only you can see - they don’t show up when someone clicks that “bookmarks” link. Not even the author can see them.

Organize your bookmarks with tags.
Filter them like you would a search.
Add your own comments/descriptions, either for your own benefit or the benefit of people looking for something to read. (Just remember that unless your bookmark is private everyone including the author can see tags & comments.)
History - AO3 can track every fic you’ve ever viewed. My history is 373 pages long. However, you can delete any fic from your history with the click of a button, clear your entire history at once, or turn this off.
“Marked for Later” - Some people use bookmarks to save fics they haven’t read yet, but there’s also a separate system for that. When you’re logged in there’s a “Mark for Later” button on each fic. Then you can filter your History down to just those Marked for Later. Once you’ve read a marked fic you can then hit the “Mark as Read”  button and it will drop off this
The downside to both the History and Marked for Later is that this system currently can’t be sorted or filtered beyond that, but it can be useful nonetheless if you want to save your Bookmarks for rereading your faves.
Locked fics - Some people lock their fics to registered users for many reasons. They don’t want their fics showing up in search engines, they don’t want bots stealing them, they’re having a troll problem, etc. Without an AO3 account you won’t even see that these exist.
Comment notifications - You have an inbox on AO3, and anytime anyone replies to one of your comments you will get a notification. No more having to go back and check fics to see if authors replied to you! You can also opt to get an email every time.
Customize how you see the site - You can use site skins, hide tags or warnings on fics, skip the extra step to view adult content (if you’re 18+), even customize how your browser titles the window.
Last but very much not least:
Subscribe to fics, series, or authors - I honestly don’t understand how anyone keeps up with WIPs without this.

Get an email every time a new chapter is posted, or every time one of your favorite writers posts a new fic or chapter!
Don’t want to read a WIP as it’s being posted? Subscribe and know as soon as the last chapter goes up.

Worth getting an account just for this alone tbh.

How are you living without it???

(Hitting subscribe is also one more way to show an author you care, although authors can’t see subscriber #s on series.)
There are probably more, but those are the main ones. Yes, you have to wait a few days to get an account, but it’s worth it. If you’re worried because you don’t want people seeing you kudos certain fics (that one tentacle fic you’ll never admit to having read?) - the way login is setup it’s actually super easy to log out, leave anonymous kudos, and log back in without leaving the fic. AO3 is designed by users; they’ve got your back.
And hey, if you ever decide to take the plunge and post something, that’s one step out of your way!
(And seriously, subscribing is a game-changer.)

Rules: List the first line of your last 10 (posted) fics and see if there's a pattern! Thanks to @citrusses for the tag!
I don't have 10 Harry Potter fics above a 1k word count but let's see.
Draco Malfoy and the Unfortunate Incident With the Horny Potion (Drarry, 1,6k)
"I had it under control, Potter."
Sleeping With Ghosts (Regulus/Harry/Draco, 21k)
Harry startled awake to a wand tip pressed into the back of his neck.
The Day Bleeds Into Nightfall (Jegulus, 4,8k)
Regulus never took Muggle Studies.
Wormwood (Regulus, 13,6k)
There was a book in the Grimmauld library, its pages frayed, the gilded spine cracked and darkened by countless hands.
Human (Drarry, 27,7k)
The little screech owl finds Harry in the shed behind the cabin where he's trying to persuade a piece of wood into turning into a chair leg.
An Improbable Bout of Summer Madness (Drarry, 16,4k)
Scorpius wasted no time in turning Draco into his show pony.
The Problem With Non-Euclidean Geometry (Drarry, 1,1k)
Two straight lines in a plane that do not intersect at any point are said to be parallel.
In the Dark (Drarry, 1,3k)
Hogwarts is dark and quiet in slumber.
My pattern: I go for either short and blunt statement sentences, or pure vibes? My as yet unpublished Blackcest Fest fic definitely fits the pattern. 😬 I don't know. Is there a pattern?

Fanfic tiktok is wild... I see so many people saying shit like "I could never read anything below 60k!!", or "What story can you even tell in under 5k words?" or "A oneshot below 10k isn't even a story!" or "I always filter completed fics by 100k< only!"
And I'm like...
A) which fandoms are you reading fics for where you have this kind of offerings on the regular?
B) have you heard of short stories? If you truly think every story NEEDS to be longform to connect with people, I sincerely feel sorry for you.
C) Average novel length is between 50k to 100k. I'm sorry, but CONSISTENTLY demanding fic writers to push out fics of that length is insane. Just think about it: YOU DEMAND AUTHORS TO PUT OUT FICS THAT COMPARE TO COMMERCIAL NOVELS IN LENGTH (AND QUALITY) AS A BASELINE.
Yall are wilding.

Tumblr media
bad omen, right? by @maesterchill | Explicit George Weasley is a busy man.Busy managing a very successful joke shop, and a moderately successful social life, and a less-than-successful sobriety issue. Certainly far too busy to spare a single thought for something as everyday as his talking mirror. So, it's only when his girlfriend Angelina is helping him decide what to wear for his fortieth birthday party that evening that he finally sees it. A glimpse of his long-dead brother, silent and unspeaking. Which, as all wizards know, can't be a good omen.
Tumblr media
Soft Love by @just-a-whorecrux | Explicit Albus has the best birthday ever. 😌🧸
Tumblr media
Waters of the Womb by @annanother-thing | Explicit Two decades is too long, and Ginny is finally free from the girl in the mirror.

Garden Scene by CreepingMyrtle | Mature   Narcissa welcomes Lucius home from Azkaban. It’s a warm night, not yet dark, and, as he speaks, her heart collapses inward on itself until it is as hard and dense as a hagstone, calcified around its gaping hole. She thinks she will perhaps never cry again. “Yes, darling,” she says, and “Here, there’s something I’ve been wanting to show you.” She summons his favorite robe. She leads him to the garden.
Tumblr media
A Drowned Man by @apricitydays-lazynights | Mature Is there anything in this world more restorative than a bubble bath?

Tumblr media
Hold me like water by @uncannycerulean | Mature After the war, Draco starts frequenting bookshops all over London, not knowing what he is looking for. Until he finds Harry, who is looking for something, too.
