🌳Lower Slaughter, Cotswolds, England. Where’s the prettiest village you have ever visited ? ___ Many consider Lower Slaughter to be the most beautiful village in Britain. 6 Things To Do In Beautiful Dornoch, Scotland
6 Things To Do In Beautiful Dornoch, Scotland
Tumblr media
Hello, everyone–yes we are alive and well!  I can’t believe I haven’t posted since October 2017.  Ugh…I should be kicked out of the bloggers club.
Tumblr media
Well, we have been traveling ‘fools’—-which is my not so legitimate excuse for being A.W.O.L.
You can always find us on Instagram at SarjeantsOnFire where we are posting pics of our travels, with a bit of microblogging in the captions— at least 3…

Here’s 8 great reasons right here.  But I don’t think this is what you were looking for.  So continue on.
1.  Haggis, Funny Fries & Chicken Paprikash
You HAVE to sample the local food, and let’s be frank here–it’s not like you have a huge choice anyway.
I am talking real honest to goodness comfort food made with 12 sticks of butter and fried in batter.  Not the healthiest choices I know, but you have to try it.   I haven’t met a Mac ‘N’ Cheese I haven’t loved.   Fries and Mac ‘N’ Cheese seems to be one of those universal dishes you can get anywhere.
These “Funny Fries” from Prague (yep they are really called Funny Fries).  Delicious yet sinful at the same time.  I think they were drenched in cheese flavored lard–but man were they DELISH.
You can try looking for the local all natural vegan cafe in a town of less than 7,000 people—good luck with that.
2.  You Can’t Out Exercise A Bad Diet
So why bother. Of course you will do miles of walking, hiking and trekking, but you will never match the calories ingested on your trip.  Well, unless you are one of those crazy runners who gets up at dawn and jogs around a strange city?  Uh who does that? Not me.
  3.  Call It A Diet ‘Vacay’
Take a diet vacay. Who doesn’t need one of those? It reinvigorates you when you get home.
Let’s look at the big picture here–2 weeks, 5 weeks, or 6 months of not dieting while traveling is nothing in the big scheme of your 30, 40, 50, 60 years of life. It will not be the end of the world, I promise.  Just make a vow to go back to real life, like healthy food and exercise when you get back home.
  4.  Try Finding A Zumba or Spin Class In Bratislava
Or cross fit, or treadmill, or gym, or getting up at 6 am after 12 hours of sightseeing the night before. Forget about it—sleep in.
Rest is way more important on the road.  It is the great rejuvenator in my book when traveling and we take it totally for granted.  Get 8 hours of sleep instead of 5 hours, so you can take a cardio class at the crack of dawn.
5.  It’s 5 O’clock Everywhere!
One of the best cultural experiences on the road–is the local watering holes at happy hour.  You get to meet people, chat and soak in the local culture. It also gives you time to unwind, discuss your day and plan for the next. Not to mention sample the local wines, whiskies, cocktails, coffee drinks….
Did you know liquid calories do not get canceled out on holiday? Sad face.
  6.  You Brought Your Stretch Pants
Don’t laugh—you know you did! Everyone packs their comfy clothes when they travel. The kind that have a little ‘stretch’ in them for the extra ‘lbs’ on the road.   You prepared for this…don’t lie.
  7.  Scales Take Up Too Much Space In Your Luggage
Leave it at home, use the weight allowance for your souvenirs, biscuits, chips, and candies.
This scale was actually in our hotel room Budapest!!!   There was also one in Vienna and Poland.   Why ruin a perfectly good vacation with reality.
8.  It’s Not The Numbers On The Scale
It’s the not numbers on the scale that matters on a trip at all.
It’s the number of people you meet…
The number of experiences you had ……
And MOST IMPORTANT–it’s the number of times you laughed!
Now that’s the numbers you should count on vacation !!!!
The numbers on the scale is not important on a trip, the number of times you laughed is!!!! Here's 8 great reasons right here.  But I don't think this is what you were looking for.

“The Highlands really is the Scotland of your imagination. It’s an amazing concoction of culture, history, architecture and unparalleled scenery. Think big skies, mind-blowing landscapes, superb food and hospitable people – it really   doesn’t get any better if you want to escape and unwind. Unpredictable. Untameable. Unbelievable. Top that!”  Visit Scotland
Of course there are the usual ‘touristy’ things to do, and we have done all those thing and loved them.  This list comprises the slightly off beat things we have done in Scotland and loved even more.
1.  Experience Driving On The Left
I don’t know if renting a car qualifies as something to do, but if you don’t have a car in the Highlands you will not be able to get around properly.  You will drive on the left can be  frightening if you’re not used to it.  I will confess, I have never driven on the left. Mike does all the driving.  If you take the leap–I have a very detailed blog post here on “Renting A Car and Driving In Scotland”.
2.  Visit The Mystery Castle In The Middle of the Loch
Castle Stalker (photo by Sarjeants On Fire)
We drove by this castle at least 5 times before we finally figured it out.  It wasn’t in our guidebooks and we did not see any signs or names.  After some intense searching we found the name–it is called Castle Stalker .
It is privately owned and still used as a part time residence by the owners today.  Access to this little gem is by private tour only.  You book by email or phone.  It’s a very small group and there are only limited times of the year they conduct the tours.
You are ferried over by boat and given a tour by Alasdair, son of the original owner.
The castle has a fascinating history of mayhem, murder and a card game.  It is also had a role in Monty Python and The Holy Grail and probably what it is most famous for. Alasdair, was an extra in the movie and has some good stories to tell.  The castle also has a fascinating history.  You will not be disappointed.
Tumblr media
2.  Touch The Stones At The Ring Of             Brodgar
Orkney lies a few miles off the north coast of Scotland.   “Heart of Neolithic Orkney” is a group of Neolithic monuments including the Ring of Brodgar, that are considered UNESCO World Heritage Sites. We spent a day there with a tour company called, “Wild About Orkney”.  Rosemary was our guide and was fabulous.  They organize everything including the ferry.
The ferry leaves from a little town called Scrabster.  We stayed at a quaint little inn the night before appropiately called, “The Ferry Inn”.  Free breakfast is also included at the Upper Deck next door.  It’s a short walk to the ferry from the Inn.
If you want a detailed look at things to do in Orkney read my blog post “5 Magical Places To Visit In Orkney”
An upgrade to the Magnus Lounge on the ferry is included with the tour.  In the lounge you get drinks, snacks, wifi, and comfy chairs.
Tumblr media
3.  Walk Along The Cliffs To Fingal’s Cave
I was a little torn about putting this on the list because of what it takes to get there.
Tumblr media
Basically, it’s 2 ferries, a boat and a bus and 1 very long day, for 1 hour on a remote island to view a cave and take a picture.  The only company I know of is Staffa Tours. But, walking to the cave and seeing it is a once in a lifetime experience.
Tumblr media
4.  Take A Walking Tour Down The Royal Mile
You could just stroll down the Royal Mile in Edinburgh but you would miss many interesting things, including why you should rub this guy’s toe.  There are plenty of free walking tours, or we took a self guided tour by Rick Steves.  Just download it to your phone, pop in your earphones and off you go.
Tumblr media
5.  Enjoy a Latte and Chocolates At Cocoa Mountain In Dornoch
Part of the goal of this list, is to help you explore areas you might not go.  Going to Dornoch in the Highlands will take you through some cute little towns, beautiful lochs and some gorgeous country roads.
Tumblr media
We found this great coffee shop, with the best latte I have ever had in the entire Highlands!  They are known for their hot chocolate and gourmet sweets.  Dornach sits on the east coast of the north Highlands that runs from the Moray Firth up to Sutherland. The whole Sutherland area is lovely, and when we go back, it’s definitely where our home base will be.
6.  Go To Falkirk And Speak With The Kelpies
Tumblr media
These magical looking guys are in Falkirk and definitely worth a stop.  They are the largest equine sculptures in the world.  There are guided tours, a small visitor center and a nice little park are called The Helix.  We made a quick stop–but there looks to be some little boats you can cruise on and a small little food truck cafe.
7.  Walk To The Top Of The Scott Monument In Edinburgh
Tumblr media
287 steps to be exact and I felt every last step in my legs for days.  But you won’t be disappointed- you will be rewarded at the top with a view of Edinburgh to die for.  And at 3 pounds, it’s a bargain.  There are 4 levels (very small levels) where you can rest if needed.
8.  Watch The 5 Locks At Fort Augustus
Tumblr media
I know it doesn’t sound very interesting but actually it is.  It is fascinating to watch 5 locks open, close and fill up as boats have to maneuver through each one.  It’s like an hour long boat ballet.  The bonus is Fort Augustus- which lies right on Loch Lomond there you can catch tours of the Loch and Urquhart Castle.  Have lunch at some of their cute little restaurants.
9.  Ascend Queen Margaret’s Bower
Tumblr media
Queen Margaret’s Bower is located in Linlithgow Palace, better know as the birthplace of Mary Queen of Scot’s.  The beautiful ruins house an ornate fountain and elegant architecture.  But climbing to the top of the palace, although a bit tricky, should not be missed.  The view of the castle, loch and area is great.  As far as castles and palaces go, this has to be on my Top 5, and we have see lots of castles.
10.  Take A Picture Of A Highland ‘Coo’
Tumblr media
There has to be some unwritten Highland law that says you must find a Coo and take a picture.  They are awesome ‘wee beasties’ to see close up.  Although the Coos are everywhere, pulling over in the middle of a two lane highway isn’t always the best move. Lucky for us, when we were on Orkney, our tour driver spotted these guys and pulled over.
But then that  hunt is half the fun, right?
Until next time.  Keep exploring…..

5 Magical Places To Visit In Orkney
Whenever we return home from a trip without a doubt we will get asked the question, “What was your favorite part of _____________(fill in the blank)?” Orkney has made the top of my list of favorites.  The island is absolutely captivating and so steeped in archeological history it’s almost unreal. 1.  Ring of Brodgar I am not going to lie—I am an Outlander fanatic, bordering on crazy–so standing…

**Let me preface this post with–we are on a ferry to Orkney and I am stealing their very lousy wifi signal because I wanted to get this post out before everyone thinks we got kidnapped. I will do my best to upload my gorgeous pics! Anyway, when we returned home from Scotland last March, we knew it was the beginning of a relationship that would last forever. 1.  IT’S THE ‘PEOPLE’S’ BUSINESS CLASS
A long time ago on a trip to New York we went to Tiffany’s . The first floor of Tiffany’s is the gazillion dollar floor–most people I know don’t shop there.
So to get to the cheap stuff–you have to take the elevator to the top.  We get in and the operator guy says,
“Which Floor?” We just looked at him with blank stares.
“Ooooh”……….he says. “You want the People’s floor.”
Well, we laughed because it was so true.
That’s how I think of Norwegian’s Premium class.  It’s an affordable version of ‘Business Class’.  You noticed I said version.  It’s not Business class, nor will it ever be Business class, it’s Business Class’ little brother.
2.  AFTER 40 YEARS- I’VE EARNED IT
Like most retired people, I have worked hard for almost 3/4 of my life, I think I deserve a few perks.   One of them is, I refuse–yep I said refuse–to sit in a 90 degree angle for 10+ hours on a plane.  I will buy food from a market my entire trip if I have to, but I am not going to kiss my knees in a plane seat.
I just want to stretch out my legs, drink the ‘free’ wine in the priority lounge, fill my backpack with lounge snacks, and eat free food all night on the plane.
3.  IT FIT’S THE BUDGET
We booked a one way fare from CDG (Paris) to LAX (Los Angeles) for $725 each. Now that’s a bargain if you ask me for what you get.  It’s tough to find a similar comparison with other airlines because it’s not really business and it’s not really premium economy.  But on the average the other airline prices were all in the $1,000+ range on Google Flights.  Thomas Cook has a similar product to Norwegian for about $500.
But, I have not heard any thing positive about Thomas Cook yet–so I am kicking it to the curb for now.
4.  YOU GET TO TURN LEFT, INSTEAD OF RIGHT
It’s the best feeling to turn left, instead of right on the plane.   You know what I’m talking about people.  The seats where they close the curtains and you get your own bathrooms.  And flight attendants offer you fluids every 60 seconds and there is room in the aisle to go pee every 90.
5.  LOUNGE ACCESS AND SKIPPING THE LINE
The lounge access for Norwegian Premium at LAX is One World Lounge in the Tom Bradley Terminal, it’s spacious, has food, drinks, recliners and snacks.  I like it.  There are recliners in the back, with outlets, and it overlooks the airport.  You can kill time by eating, drinking and people watching below.  Mike gets our money’s worth in Scotch alone!
You also get to board first, which actually doesn’t matter much to me.  But if you have carry on, then I guess that is helpful.
6.  YOUR PRIZE PACKAGE INCLUDES!
I feel like Vanna White, when you’ve guessed the puzzle on Wheel of Fortune.  She walks across the stage turning all the letters, points at the puzzle…….and Pat Sajack says,
“And here’s what you’ve won!“……so here’s what you’ve won.
Personally, I don’t think it’s a bad deal for the price.  And for all you purists out there…I KNOW IT’S NOT BUSINESS CLASS!
Someday when I grow up and get enough Chase Sapphire Reserve Reward Points , I might get to fly Business Class, but for now, let’s just pretend I don’t know any better.
Oh and I don’t want to end without a few tips for booking a Norwegian Premium Seat:
We only book one way flights, it seems to be cheaper.  Plus, we never know where we will end up on a trip.
You have to check the site constantly, the price of those premium seats to Europe vary all the time!  I have seen them go from $600 to $1000+ for the same seat at any given time.
If you find a premium seat for a good price—BOOK IT!!!!!!!!!!  I repeat BOOK IT.  We have seen a price change in minutes.  We didn’t book it and kicked ourselves for it.  They go quick.
I have also gotten emails for a bidding system, where you book a regular seat and can bid for a premium seat.  I have never tried it–I am not taking the chance.  But, it could be worth it.
IMHO and contrary to popular belief –I think the earlier you book a premium seat on Norwegian the cheaper it is.
By the way–we have no relation whatsoever with Norwegian.  It’s just a product we use and like.
And you all know, if I like a product I will write about it and if I don’t like a product, I will also write about it.  I’m a pretty straight forward kinda gal.  Hence, this epic tale.
Alright, that’s all folks….we will be pulling up anchor and shoving off tonight (see Mr. Johnny Farrell doesn’t that give it more ‘flare’ and pizzazz?).
We will see you across the pond as they say–Next stop Edinburgh to get tattoos!
Take Care Friends……Donna
