On all levels except physical, those people were having SEX on that tennis court
In my sophomore year of college, the professor of my Dada and Surrealism class insisted that anything, (in this case, a truck,) could be interpreted as a phallus if you try hard enough. Using this perspective has made watching movies 1000000x times more enjoyable. Case and point: that churro scene.

CHALLENGERS (2024, dir. Luca Guadagnino) is a film that doesn't root for any of its three main characters and isn't concerned about who gets to win in the end. it's written and shot like a long tennis rally that doesn't let up; nobody is willing to drop the ball, but everybody's anticipating the moment it finally happens. it's obsessed with the back-and-forth while simultaneously desperate for a release, and good god does every character get to have theirs in the end.

the weak interpretation of Challengers is that it's a story of two men in love and unable to be together because of internalized homophobia, somehow leaving out the incendiary antiheroine whose presence dominates much of the plot and character development
the more interesting (and imo accurate) interpretation of Challengers is that we are watching two people come to terms with their mutual love and passion for someone who they've both been in denial of needing, which does NOT negate the way that they need each other and relate to each other... and that is to say, I think that Challengers deeply underlines both coming to terms with bisexuality (for Art) and coming to terms with loving two people and getting different things from them (for both Art and Tashi)
(tbh I think Patrick gets both of these things early on)
anyway Challengers has an HEA if you read it right
