The Two Halves of Me
The Two Halves of Me
*blows dust off* Been a while since I’ve cracked open the blog, eh? But I had an epiphany this morning, and I felt it was better to do the long-form post than to post this on IG or whatever. So here we go. But first, a bit of background… If you’re new to Sushland, back in 2013 I ended things with a guy I thought I was going to marry. You can read more about how it all went down in Empath. More…

#SlayYourFears Turns 5 - Fear of Fear
#SlayYourFears Turns 5 - Closing out the week with a look at the past and the future
This week, I’ve been revisiting all my old blog posts on the things that used to scare me to celebrate the fifth anniversary of Empath. It’s been especially interesting as I’ve just had a major life change – getting married last month. Taking the time to get introspective has been therapeutic for me, and I hope that it’s been helpful for you.
You can read the original blog post,“Fear of Fear”here…

#SlayYourFears Turns 5 - Fear of Rejection
#SlayYourFears Turns 5 – Fear of Rejection
This week, I’ve been revisiting all my old blog posts on the things that used to scare me to celebrate the fifth anniversary of Empath. Back then, I wrote about the things that scared me, rejection, being alone forever, having no money, and it’s been interesting to see which of those fears I’ve conquered, and which rear their head every so often. It’s been especially interesting as I’ve just had…

#SlayYourFears Turns 5 - Fear of Being Alone Forever
Getting married kind of knocks the "forever" off the "alone forever" fear.  But there are still some downsides to independence. New #SlayYourFears Turns 5 post!
It’s been so fascinating to revisit all the things that used to scare me. I’m celebrating the fifth anniversary of Empath, my anxiety dragon book that has been a quiet hit around the country. When the book first came out, my twenty-or-so fans were treated to a series of introspective blog posts about what really scared me. I updated them about three years ago, but I thought it would be fun to…

Empath Turns 5 - And Still Teaches Me Stuff
Empath Turns 5 - And Still Teaches Me Stuff.
Five years ago today, I published a little book called Empath. It was my third published novel, a quick side-trip into my psyche in the middle of writing the Razia series. The cover featured a dragon drawn by my very talented cousin Cassondra, a wee babe at the time. I sold it at conventions, but it never did very much online, but I also didn’t give it much effort. Standalones, you know? Plus it…

#SlayYourFears Turns 5 - Fear of No Money
#SlayYourFears Turns 5!
Yes, kids, I’m dusting off the ol’ blog machine to celebrate the fifth anniversary of Empath, my anxiety dragon book that has been a quiet hit around the country. When the book first came out, my twenty-or-so fans were treated to a series of introspective blog posts about what really scared me. I updated them about three years ago, but I thought it would be fun to update them again with how far…

The Nebula ballots are open for nominations, and as The City of Veils was awarded the Florida Author Project YA Book of the Year, I’m gonna shoot my shot.
Of course, the biggest highlight of the year was said book. I’m happy to send a review copy for any interested Nebula voter or member of SFWA.

How The Veil Came to Be - Writing a Book In a Month
How The Veil Came to Be – Writing a Book In a Month
With The City of Veils releasing next week, I thought it might be fun to revisit how this series came to be, and how much fun (or lack there of) I had writing it.
City of Veils – I blinked and there was Book
When I get inspired for a brand new book, it usually comes to me as a concept. For City of Veils, I was in Biloxi at a veryboring show (I didn’t even make the $100 table fee back). I read an…

Fantasy Technology - The Gadgets of The Veil
Fantasy Technology – The Gadgets of The Veil
When I pitch The City of Veils, I tell people it’s basically a YA-Fantasy-meets-Batman. To that end, I wanted to make sure that Brynna didn’t just talk about being a vigilante, girlfriend got out there and beat up some bad guys. The problem, of course, is that Bruce Wayne has money and, more importantly, electricity. For my purposes, I had to find a way to make Brynn a badass sans both!
No…

About Felix - Meet the Characters
About Felix – Meet the Characters
Howdy everybody! With The City of Veils arriving next month, I thought it might be fun to write a little bit about some of the main characters in the book. Last week, I talked about Brynna, so today, I thought I’d put the character spotlight on one, Felix Llobrega.
About the Captain
A portrait of Captain Llobrega by Diana Pinguicha!
In the free short story The Runaway Princess, we very briefly…

The Economics of Forcadel - World building in Fantasy
The Economics of Forcadel – World building in Fantasy
When I do world building in my fantasy books, I explore it from the point of view of my characters and flesh it out as I go. Around the second draft is really where I nail down what’s possible, impossible, and how things impact one another (and more importantly, how that affects my plot). For The City of Veils, my awesome YA epic fantasy about a princess vigilante, the protagonist gets a crash…

About Brynna – Meet the Characters
Howdy everybody! With The City of Veils coming out next month, I thought it might be fun to introduce some of the characters. Today, Princess Brynna-Larissa Archer Rhodes Lonsdale is on the hot seat. Keep reading to find out why this newest Sush heroine fits right in with the rest.
Brynna, the Vigilante
When we meet Brynna in City of Veils, she’s doing what she does best, saving a poor shopkeep…

Allies, Enemies, and In-Between - Political World Building in Fantasy Novels
Allies, Enemies, and In-Between – Political World Building in Fantasy Novels
Recent years not withstanding, I adore politics. The ancient art of compromise, negotiation, and while no one gets what they want always, at least there’s a solution that everyone can live with. Therefore, it’s probably no surprise that all my fantasy novels are heavy into the political world building. In my YA epic fantasy, The City of Veils, Brynna spends most of her brainpower trying to…

Things I've Learned As an Author
Things I’ve Learned As an Author
I’m coming up on my fifth year as a published author. Although it seems like yesterday I began this crazy journey, I know that I’ve grown creatively and professionally. I thought I’d take a blog post to write about all the things I’ve learned as an author. If you have anything to add, feel free to post in the comments.
Thing #1: Take All Advice with a Grain of Salt
This is an ironic first thing…

When It Just Happens: Write A Book in a Month
When It Just Happens: Write A Book in a Month
In general, I’m not a person who can just write a book in a month. It usually takes me upwards of 3 months to have a book ready for beta readers. However, last April, I experienced a magnificent unicorn-like moment: I wrote 76,000 words in 30 days.
How’d I do it? No idea. But here are some theories:
Theory #1: Hiding Your Feet
A deep-cut, 30 Rockquote here, but the idea is that Dennis hides his…
