Let me explain how powerful this image is right here...Leonardo Da Vinci's "Mona Lisa" is a world renowned, most sought after painting in The Louvre. Herald as a masterpiece by Davinci for the use of sfumato and atmospheric perspective, it was an innovation of painting style during the Italian Renaissance. The painting is behind an air tight, temperatures controlled, for it's protection, as well as custom glass, on the personalized frame with a wooden barricade to protect this work from crowds and free radicals pollutants. Not an intimate experience. The juxtaposition of a black woman tending to a black man's scalp in a completely empty lourve is an act that is very intimate and communal. In many parts of the African diaspora grooming of oneself, in particular hair, was an art in itself. Hairstyles were created to not only as a form of tribal identity, but could also reflect your position, title, rank etc. In non western cultures art is always has been utilitarian; ingrained and Incorporated in everyday life. Art was integral and integrated into everything in black culture; experienced and accessible. The Mona Lisa, not so much... The Carter's "Ape Shi*t"
